THE RIGHT HEAD PLACE

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I am sitting here like so much fish, listening to Mr. Benjamin Britten’s very ethereal and haunting violin concerto, in honor of just having watched In a Dark Place, starring Leelee Sobieski, or, as she likes to be called now, Mrs. Kimmel (no relation). Now what in tarnation does having watched the moody In a Dark Place starring Leelee Sobieski have to do with the price of petunias OR Benjamin Britten. Well, I’ll tell you. In a Dark Place was a modern adaptation of Mr. Henry James’ classic The Turn of the Screw and Mr. Britten happened to have written an opera based on the same Henry James classic. I’d listen to that, but for some reason I don’t have it in my Music app. Anyway, the violin concerto is wonderful, the movie less so. Of course, I’m not sure most people would even know it’s a modern adaptation of The Turn of the Screw unless they actually watched the end credits. It’s reasonably well directed, but it makes blatant everything that was ambiguous – taken on its own, it’s okay and I really liked Mrs. Kimmel in her acting days. Anyway, it was short, moody in its way, but with the usual pointless music score. We do get some nudity, a Lesbian kiss, and then it’s over. I can’t really recommend it but it’s free on Amazon Prime. Otherwise, it was a pretty short day due to getting to bed very late and getting up very late, namely five in the morning and two in the afternoon – so nine hours of good sleep. Once up, I had a lot of e-mails to answer, one irritating text to not respond to, and food to order. I hadn’t ordered from Stanley’s in ages, so I got a Cobb salad. It arrived twenty minutes later, and I ate it all up – very good. That was it for food. I did a few things on the computer, did one quick errand, and the day was done. Then I watched the movie and after it I watched a few irritating videos on YouTube. And here we are.

Today, I’ll be up when I’m up, and I’m doing nothing but getting myself in the right head place for tomorrow’s physical. I don’t know why I need to do that, but I need to do that. So, a ME day, although I’m certain that there’ll be some telephonic calls, I’m certain I’ll put gas in the motor car, I’m certain I’ll check in with the mail place, I’m certain I’ll go there if there’s anything there, I’m certain I’ll eat something light but amusing, and I’m equally certain that at some point I’ll watch, listen, and relax.

Tomorrow, she of the Evil Eye comes, which I wish was NOT happening, but I’ll go have a very light breakfast somewhere, do a couple of errands and whatnot, then come home around eleven-thirty. I’ll shave and shower, get dressed and I’ll be on my way to the doctor’s office between two and two-fifteen, because you can never predict traffic, even at that off hour. If I get there really early, I’ll just park and take a walk. The appointment is at four and it says it will take about forty-five minutes. I’m sure they’ll take blood, then poke and prod me, weigh me, tell me I should lose the fifty pounds I gained during the pandemic, and hopefully, that will be that. From there, I’ll probably either mosey on over to Du-Par’s for something, perhaps even pancakes, or perhaps Genghis Cohen for some yummilicious orange chicken – we shall see. Then I’ll come home. The rest of the week is some meetings and meals, still trying to set a set and lighting designer for Drat! The Cat!, have Thanksgiving dinner out – deciding on the place today, probably – then I have a lot of stuff to do as we head into December, which is a bit of a crazy month – eye surgeon appointment on the second, then our Kritzerland rehearsal week, with rehearsals on Tuesday, Friday, and out stumble-through on Saturday, then an early arrival at the Arboretum on Sunday to make sure everything is set up properly, although I’ll be shown photos as it’s being set up on Saturday, then we do sound check, and then the show. After, there’ll be a little thing nearby hosted by Adrienne Stiefel for her birthday and mine, I’ll only be there for a brief time, and then I’ll have a proper birthday dinner with a few people somewhere fun.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up when I’m up, have a ME day, have a ME day, get my head in a good place for tomorrow, have some telephonic calls, put gas in the motor car, check with the mail place, eat, and then watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: What are favorite ghost stories – books, plays, and movies. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, as I get in the right head place for tomorrow’s physical.
