Well, dear readers, this month is flying by, like a gazelle doing a one-gazelle show as Gazelle MacKenzie. We don’t allow groaning here at haineshisway.com, for those who remember Gazelle MacKenzie as fondly as I do. I met her once at one of those signing shows and she was utterly delighted when I told her I had the 45 of Hard to Get and I used to mime singing it at my Monday evening shows back when I was nine. She was the sweetest person. But why am I talking about Gazelle MacKenzie or even Giselle MacKenzie when there are tales to be told, tales as old as time or at least as old as me. First, we have the tale of the dentist visit during which nothing I thought would be happening happened. I thought I was there to get my permanent crown but that turned out to be incorrect. I was really there to have the prep for the crown done – the prepping of the bit of tooth it will be glued to, which required another ton of Novocain, drilling to smooth out the bit of tooth, then taking an impression and making me a new temporary crown, which I must say doesn’t fit as well as the last one. Anyway, that was ninety minutes of torture and unlike the warning I’d gotten when he had to the work on the abscess pocket last week – the warning how painful it would be after the Novocain wore off, when in fact there was no pain at all – this time I got no warning, but I got a LOT of pain. I had to take Tylenol and Amoxicillin and finally it got better halfway into the evening hours. That was the first tale. The second tale happened a couple of hours later when I took my motor car to the body shop. Very nice people there and they said they’d do their best to get it done as quickly as possible, but that it might take a month IF the parts have to be ordered from Europe, especially during the holiday season. We’ll keep positive thoughts that they’ll find them here. So far, they haven’t asked for a deductible for the repairs, so that’s good. I did have to pay for part of the dentist work, though, which I wasn’t expecting, so if I don’t get some modern major miracles soon there will be modern major HELL toupee. I hadn’t done an Uber in ages and boy are they more expensive than ever. That was my morning and afternoon, after having gotten seven hours of sleep. Once home, I waited an hour, then ordered the chopped Eyetalian salad from CPK and that came forty minutes later and was good, although for the first time ever, I used too much dressing. I finished watching episode one of Maigret with Bruno Cremer and it was very good, although my memory is the series gets even better in its second season.
I watched little bits of things, including about thirty minutes of the new movie, Maria, about Maria Callas in her later years, starring Miss Angelina Jolie, one of my least favorite actors. The publicity notes brag how she studied for eleven months to sing opera and apparently, she does sing in the last third of the film, like someone her age can learn to be a professional opera singer. For the other parts of the film, she lip syncs to Callas. Thus far it’s a slog, and Ms. Jolie jus isn’t my cuppa. Maybe I’ll finish it at some point. Then I watched the first hour of a 2015 French film from France, which I’m really enjoying, entitled Back in Crime, a stupid title – the original French title translates as The Other Life of Richard Kemp. It’s kind of a time travel thing and it’s done very well. I have forty-five minutes to go, and I’ll definitely finish it before bed. That’s about it and here we are.
Today, I’ll be up when I’m up, I’ll do whatever needs doing, obviously I’m not going anywhere, but I have tons of organizing to do here, and I’m making more plot and research notes for the new book. I’ll either make Wacky Noodles or a couple of tuna sandwiches, depending on my moody mood. Of course, I’ll pray for a few modern major miracles, and then at some point I’ll watch, listen, and relax.
Tomorrow and the weekend will be more of the same and then I’m through doing stuff until the New Year, other than having a nice two weeks off.
Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up when I’m up, do whatever needs doing, organize, make more research notes, eat, pray for some modern major miracles, and then watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: What are your favorite time travel books and movies? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, as the tales as old as time have been told.
