STAGING THE COMPLICATED BUT FUN OVERTURE AND OPENING NUMBER

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, we had us another really fun rehearsal – exhausting, but fun. I got the huge Overture/opening number done just in the nick of time. Complicated and long, but I think it came out really well and I’ll be finessing and adding little things to it, but the structure is sound and there are some really cute things in it. I think the vignettes in the overture will now work and the whole thing has a nice kinetic flow with some Keystone Kops stuff to set up something that comes later. The cast is really fun to work with and I think they had a good time. We now just have to drill it and drill it and drill it because if it’s not sharp it doesn’t work. So, that’s one big load off. We did lose one of our ladies of the ensemble because her one-day conflict turned out to be five days just as we’re going into run-throughs, so I wasn’t about to do that. I must say, I’m not used to this much exercise – it’s been over a year since 70, Girls, 70 and I’m out of shape. My energy never flags during rehearsal but afterwards is a whole other story. I’m on my feet, showing steps and busy patterns – but it’s really good for me to be doing it. After we finished, I will admit to stopping at my nearby In ‘N’ Out for cheeseburger and animal fries and boy were they good. I do apologize for the lateness of the notes, but I had to relax just a bit. I am ready for bed, that much I can tell you and have told you. Otherwise, yesterday was a day. I went over the proofing fixes, made some adjustments and then sent it in. I had several telephonic conversations throughout the day. Oh, I got eight hours of good sleep with more weird dreams. Once up, I answered a plethora of e-mails and texts, finally got the referral for the cat scan so I’ll make the appointment now – don’t know how soon it will be but hopefully soon. I had Maria’s Kitchen for lunch – not her actual kitchen but my penne in pink sauce with one meatball, asserting itself like a bombastic bobbysoxer. I was once a bombastic something or other that started with a B, but that’s another story. I shaved and showered, and then I finally moseyed on over to the theater for our rehearsal. And here we are.

Today, I’ll be up when I’m up, I’ll do whatever needs doing, I’ll prep the big number I have to stage tonight, I’ll eat something light, then we’ll spend the first thirty minutes of the rehearsal reviewing last night’s work and we’ll run it five or six times. I’ll also have time to work it on Saturday and we’ll also show it to the choreographer in case she wants to zhuzh it up. I’ll probably get a snack on the way home. And, of course, we must pray for a modern major miracle, oh, yes, we must pray for a modern major miracle.

Tomorrow is more of the same and then another rehearsal that’s mostly scene stuff – I don’t think the ensemble is called for Thursday. Friday is my day and also Valentine’s Day, and then Saturday is our four-hour day, and our choreographer will be working on a big number. There are still several biggies to do, including one “ballet” that I’m doing completely differently than the way it was done – for a whole slew of reasons. Then Sunday is a ME day and Monday I’m prepping next week’s rehearsals.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up when I’m up, do whatever needs doing, prep the big number we’re staging tonight, eat something light, rehearse, get a snack, and pray for a modern major miracle. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Ask BK Day, the day in which you get to ask me or any dear reader any old question you like and we get to give any old answer we like. So, let’s have loads of lovely questions and loads of lovely answers and loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happy to have staged the huge opening of the show.
