A RESTFUL DAY OF REST

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I am sitting here like so much fish, listening to Mr. Ormandy’s rendition of Johann Sebastian Bach’s St. John Passion, a very, very long work which takes up two CDs and runs about two hours and fifteen minutes. But what music-making, what sound, what singers – no, it’s not a “period” recording and ask me if I give a flying Wallenda. The music sounds wonderful with the amazing Philadelphia Orchestra. After this CD, there’s only about twelve left. What a set this is. I did manage to watch a documentary last evening, entitled My Name is Alfred Hitchcock. The opening titles inform us that it is written and narrated by Mr. Hitchcock, so one assumes that they used AI for the voice and his own words. Well, no, they lied. Out and out lied. At the end, they reveal it was an actor doing the voice and that it was written by the film’s director. Of course, it’s painfully obvious from frame one to the end. This thing has a 93% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Well, I give it a 1% rotten rating. I found the entire thing ludicrous and pretentious and the only thing I liked about it were the clips, which, of course, has made me want to watch all the movies again and when the happy day arrives when I have a 4K TV I will do just that. Highly not recommended by the likes of me. Otherwise, yesterday just sort of happened. I ended up staying in after calling the mail place – only two envelopes there, so I’ll get those today. I got eight and a half hours of good sleep, got up, answered quite a few e-mails, then ordered a small pizza from a local jernt that has gotten nothing but raves on Yelp and elsewhere. This is a jernt I have driven past heaven knows how many times – it’s literally four minutes away. I got pepperoni, sausage, and mushrooms. Sadly, it was disappointing for the reason most pizza is disappointing in LA – too much cheese, too little tomato sauce. It’s that simple. I ate it all, but I don’t need to try it again, despite the fact that it was reasonably priced AND had a DoorDash discount. Later in the afternoon, I had a small thing of ice cream and that was good. As per usual, I sat on my couch like so much fish and turned on YouTube and immediately dozed off for about an hour. Go know. Did you know that if Sheldon Harnick had written English words to St. John Passion it would be by Bach and Harnick? We don’t allow groaning here at haineshisway.com. That was really about it – one telephonic call was the only other diversion.

Today, I’ll be up when I’m up, I’ll go pick up the two envelopes from the mail place, I’ll do a quick Gelson’s run, I’ll come home, order food, definitely try to complete booking the two upcoming Kritzerland shows, and then I’ll just watch, listen, and relax.

The rest of the week is more of the same, then we resume performances on Friday night. It’s imperative we do really well the final two weekends, so I’ll do my big push, oh, yes, I’ll do my big push.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up when I’m up, pick up two envelopes, do a quick Gelson’s run, come home, order food, definitely try to complete booking the upcoming Kritzerland shows, then watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: As long as we spoke of Mr. Hitchcock, what are your favorite Hitchcock movies and performances? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happy to have had a restful day of rest.
