July 3, 2005:

I, BOHEMIAN

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, what a lovely holiday weekend it is. I am doing nothing other than what I wish to do, I am relaxing, I am walking around in short pants, t-shirt, and bare feet, I am, in short, living rather Bohemian on this holiday weekend. I, Bohemian – that’s the title of my next novel. I have nary a care on my mind and, conversely, I have nary a mind on my care. I am at one with my environment and at two with my surroundings. Yesterday, for example, I started the day by going to Teddy, who proceeded to lighten my hair. Once the hair was lightened, I felt lighter. I floated back to my car, came home to a nice, clean home environment, and made myself some sautéed chicken with mushrooms and onions, for, as you all know, I am on a serious diet right now. The only other thing I ate was fresh fruitstuffs – a little watermelon, and some cantaloupe and honeydew balls. One simply can’t have enough cantaloupe and honeydew balls, can one? I, Bohemian. After that, I walked around quoting Kerouac and Ferlinghetti. After that, I did a couple of errands, and continued re-proofing the new galley. That, of course, is an entirely annoying process, because I am finding things that I didn’t find the first time I proofed. It just never ends, basically, and at some point you just have to say you’re done and understand that no one can catch everything. Other than that, I just relaxed and smelled the roses and the Diet Coke. Isn’t that exciting? Isn’t that just too too? I could get used to this Bohemian lifestyle.

Yesterday and last night I watched the new DVD of Moonlighting – The First Two Seasons. I haven’t seen the show since these episodes first aired. I remember enjoying them quite a bit, and I’m happy to report that most of them hold up quite well, at least the ones I’ve seen thus far. The two-hour pilot is a complete delight, and there is nothing better than watching a well-directed show, with literate and amusing delight, spoken by two star-quality actors who have great chemistry. I also like the fact that there is only one other regular, Miss Alyce Beasley. I’m afraid this show puts to shame most of what is on TV today. It looks great, but it’s simple. No fancy “with it” camerawork or “style.” Miss Shepherd is the real article – funny, charming, and a terrific comedienne, and Mr. Willis, prior to his becoming a “serious” actor, is delightful and droll, and completely winning. The quality of the transfer is great and there are commentary tracks for those who care, and also a two-part documentary about the making of the show, which, as usual, is mostly an amateurishly done bore.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below, for I must continue to be Bohemian and cool, man, cool.

For the first time in ages, I am invited to a July 4th barbecue – down the street at the home of neighbors Bob Gitt and Anthony Slide. I have decided to attend, so I should be eating lovely barbecued foodstuffs tomorrow. I love barbecued foodstuffs because most of it is diet-friendly. I’ll just have to lay off the barbecued beans (should there be any).

But, today I shall be wearing the short pants, the t-shirt, and the bare feet, for today I am living the Bohemian lifestyle. I, Bohemian. Today I shall be eating fat-free hot dogs on low-cal hot dog buns, and I shall be eating more fresh fruit. I feel that soon I will be svelte and lithe and lean, with abs and buns of steel.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must write a bit, I must proof a bit, I must eat a bit, I must watch a DVD or three, I must drive about in my motor car spouting Ginsberg, and I must relax my weary bones. Today’s topic of discussion: What are your all-time favorite songs sung by Barbra Streisand, Peggy Lee, and Ella Fitzgerald? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst we all sit around like so much fish, living the Bohemian lifestyle. We, Bohemian.
