PASSING OVER PASSOVER

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I think it’s Passover. If so, I wish all our Jewish dear readers a happy pesach. I shall not be attending a seder because no one invites me to such things anymore, and I’m jiggy with that. I’m trying to remember the last Seder I attended – I think it was a couple of years ago with Jenna Lea Rosen’s family. Heaven forbid what little family I have left should actually invite their cousin to a Seder – the last time I attended the cousin’s Seder, which I’d been going to since I was a boy, was probably close to twenty years ago. I shall not be eating chopped livers or gefilte fishes, although I like both. I shall not be eating herring in sour cream, even though I used to like that – now the thought of eating herring makes me want to vomit on the ground. I shall not be eating my grandmother’s garlic chicken – no one will, as she’s been dead for forty years or more. I shall not be eating brisket or matzo or tsimis or bitter herbs, but in honor of being a Jew I do proclaim I shan’t eat bacon, ham or pork chops. The only thing I would eat if someone offered me some is noodle kugel. But if I have that craving, Gelson’s deli counter has it right now – have no idea if it’s good or bad, though.

Yesterday was rather a Sunday. I woke up at seven-thirty after only four hours of sleep, then fell back asleep at eight-thirty and slept until 11:45, so around seven hours of sleep. Once up, I answered e-mails, had a telephonic call, did some work on the computer, began writing an idea for a What If, just in case I want one in the May Kritzerland, and just sort of sat here like so much fish. I made two tortillas with scrambled eggs and a bit of shredded cheese – they were fine and very low-cal. I had some of my beloved cherry chip low-cal low-fat ice cream, listened to music, and never left the home environment. At some point I sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I watched a superb documentary, one that kind of led the way for most documentaries of its type that followed – Errol Morris’ The Thin Blue Line. I always think I’ve never seen it but ten minutes in and I know I saw it at some point, although I did a search in the notes and found no reference to seeing it in all our sixteen years, so it must have been prior to that. In any case, I got very caught up in it and it’s just so compelling and interesting and, of course, it led to a wrongly convicted person being freed from death row and prison. I believe it was one of the first documentaries to ever use recreations of an event and it does so very well. Most of the time I don’t like that, but it just works here. I know this was just released on a Criterion Blu and Ray, but I watched it on the Flix of Net. After that, I was still a bit hungry, so I fried two more eggs and ate them – that was only a 140 calorie snack, so it was fine. Then I took a shower and listened to music – a Samuel Barber kind of evening, still breaking in the new speakers.

Today, I’ll hopefully pick up the errant and truant check and get it into the bank where it belongs. If it shouldn’t arrive, then I’ll have to contact the dealer and tell him I’m not willing to wait anymore and to please wire the funds as he should have done in the first place. But, I’m hoping it just arrives so I don’t have to go through that. I’ll eat something light but amusing, and if I haven’t heard from the person I’m waiting to hear from, then I have to move on to another singer, maybe two, and we haven’t heard from either of our guest star asks. I will never understand people who can’t open an e-mail and just reply in a timely fashion. Otherwise, I have several things that need doing and I shall damn well do them. Then it will be time for the Seder I won’t be attending.

Tomorrow is more of the same, and then Wednesday through Saturday we’re casting the musical – very long days, with callbacks on Saturday. By Sunday I will really be ready for some relaxing. I’m going to have to have the helper pick ups stuff from the mail place each day and bring it to me.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, hopefully pick up the check, bank, eat, cast, choose songs, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: What is your favorite deli food, like real Jewish deli food, and what are your favorite delis? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, after which, I suppose, I shall pass over Passover.
