THE QUIET TREES

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I am sitting here like so much tired fish because someone rang my doorbell at eight in the morning – tree people here to trim the trees off the power lines.  I knew they were coming but not that they would be knocking on my door. They had their big machines out there. I moved my car to the street so access would be easy.  I went back to bed and eventually got another couple hours of sleep, and I don’t believe these people did any tree trimming or I certainly would have heard it – I did not. And when I got up around ten-thirty they were gone.  I don’t get it.  So, I’ve been overtired all the livelong day and night.

I had a nice lunch at Tony’s Bella Vista, where I had some fettucine in a cream sauce with peas, prosciutto, and Parmesan – it was great, but heavy, even though it wasn’t a huge portion.  I also had a little salad with their excellent Eyetalian dressing.  After that, I picked up some packages, then came home.  I changed my mind about the July Kritzerland show, so I’m now choosing songs for the new idea and then I can cast it.  I got a new chart to proof, which I did – made a couple of note corrections and he’ll now orchestrate that today.  Mostly I was tired and didn’t feel like doing anything that involved work. So, instead I sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I watched a bit of the new The Big Country Blu-ray, which fixes a problem with the previous Blu-ray, where the image was slightly stretched.  It looks very good and I really like the movie – in fact, there aren’t many William Wyler movies I don’t like.  I’ll finish that tonight.

Then I continued listening to all this music I’ve been uploading into iTunes, all instrumentals, jazz and easy listening stuff. I also have several classical CDs to upload, but not until I’ve listened to all these.  I listened to Jacques Loussier’s Play Bach 1 & 2 – great albums both and well worth having if you’re a fan of Bach and jazz.  I listened to the Mantovani cover version of Oliver and Stop the World – I Want to Get Off, both great in great sound.  I tried to listen to two Johnny Harris albums – the first I had to stop and delete – brick-walled mastering and a very unpleasant listening experience.  The other was better but not by much.  I listened to Cal Tjader’s great cover version of West Side Story, which I really love.  Also his great suite from Porgy and Bess is tops – I had that album when I was fourteen on red vinyl yet.

I was too tired to jog, so I continued with the music – several Quincy Jones albums from the 1960s on Mercury.  I love the Quincy of that era – great arrangements, great band, good stereo sound.  I played Golden Boy, which has three songs from that show, plus three Quincy originals – very enjoyable.  Then his Henry Mancini album, which is great, Quincy Plays for Pussycats, also fun, and finally Quincy Plays Hip Hits.  If you can find these, I recommend all of them – they’re Japanese imports in those little mini-LP sleeves.  I found all those mini-LP things – I forgot how many I have – well over 100 – must go back and catch up with some of them, and some of them are still unplayed.

Today, my lunch is canceled, so I’m not sure what I’ll be eating, but I have to figure out the Kritzerland songs, I’ll jog, I’ll hopefully pick up packages, and I may just eat here rather than go out.  I’ll watch stuff in the evening, and I’m hoping to have the new track to proof.  After I get that, there are only three left, two of which are VERY short pieces.

Not sure what’s happening tomorrow or on the weekend, but I suppose I’ll find out at some point.  Then the following week we’ll be preparing for our little private reading.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must for example, figure out songs, jog, hopefully pick up packages, hopefully proof a new track, eat, and then watch stuff. Today’s topic of discussion: What are your favorite songs from Disney films – old, new, animated, live-action. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, wondering why the tree trimmers either didn’t do anything or were so quiet that I didn’t hear them.
