THE FIFTH BRAIN

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, this week has flown by, like a gazelle drinking a lime rickey. And today, of course, is The Brain From Planet X’s fifth performance, another of those four-thirty affairs, only this time it appears that we have a nice-sized house. Of course, my day would not have been complete without the usual NYMF drama – to read about it see last night’s posts. All seems to be well now – and we’ll just see how everything is when I arrive at the Acorn at three-thirty. It was actually funny last night during the height of the drama – I suggested to my general manager that she just go directly to the head of NYMF. There have been occasions where I’ve really wanted to call him and just let go, but she’s always stopped me from doing so and dealt with it herself. But last night, she said “call him” and told me to say whatever I was feeling. That’s all I needed to hear and, well, let’s just say the two messages he got were cherce and that they did whatever they needed to do. In other news, it was another hot and humid day, although not as hot and humid as yesterday. I managed to sleep until ten after nine, then got up, did a bunch of stuff on the computer, like answer a whole mess o’ e-mails and attending to other matters. I then finished packing up my second big box o’ stuff to send back to LA and I walked it over to Fed Ex and off it went. After that, I took a walk, came back home, had another round of e-mails to deal with, along with some important telephonic calls, and then it was time to meet dear readers Miss Karen, Cason, Edisaurus and her ever-lovin’ Greg at 44×10, where we were joined by BJ. What a meal. I had the fried chicken I’ve been longing to have since I got here, and it was even better than I remembered. Greg had it, too, and I think he said it was the best fried chicken he’d ever eaten. Cason and mom split a salad of some sort and 44×10’s delicious and huge mac and cheese. We had a splendidly splendid time and afterwards we walked Cason and Miss Karen home, then I walked with Edisaurus and Greg to 51st and Ninth, where I took my leave. That’s when I got the call about the NYMF drama, and I spent the next ninety minutes dealing with that. I then answered yet more e-mails and now here I am, writing Ye Olde Notes.

My cast gifts arrived today, too, so I’ll be inscribing them to our various and sundried cast members and crew and such. I had a nice e-mail from our very own Tony Walton, we got another pretty good review (not crazy about all the writing, but wonderful for the cast and production – have no idea which show they saw – they did think it was very funny, though and I was mostly pleased with it), so that’s three not very good reviews, one rave, and one mostly positive. If we get one more positive then we’ll be even.

I must tell you, this whole NYMF experience has left me drained, oh, yes, it has left me drained and it is not an experience I ever need to repeat, unless someone just asked me to direct a show, which I’d be happy to do.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because it’s Friday and we have a show to do and I have a beauty sleep to get.

Today, as noted, we have a four-thirty performance with a nice-sized house, so I’m looking forward to it and to seeing some folks I know. After the show, I’m going to attempt to hie myself to see Noel’s opening night, but it will be dicey and wholly depends on how our show goes and if we have technical difficulties – I’m hoping we won’t, but if there are any I’m going to have to stay and deal with it. I’m also hoping that there will be a get-together after Edisaurus and Greg and Cason and Miss Karen see The Last Starfighter – I’ve suggested we meet at the Brooklyn Diner.

Tomorrow, I have the day off, and I’ll be seeing The Last Starfighter’s matinee, which I’m really looking forward to. I know vixmom and the vixter will be there, too, so maybe we’ll go do something fun afterwards.

I think we should do something fun in these here notes, frankly. My goodness, these here notes are just dry as desert weed, aren’t they? Is there such a thing as desert weed? Is there such a thing as dessert weed? I know that some of you will answer the latter in the affirmative. Speaking of dessert, I didn’t eat any last night. Wasn’t that good of me?

Today I also have to ship a small box back to LA, which I’ll try to do right after I get up in the morning. I cannot wait to be back in my own bed, I cannot wait to shower in my own home again with decent water pressure, I cannot wait to be back in my own backyard. I have, of course, enjoyed much of this six-weeks in New York, and I’ve had several intensely good dining adventures, and most of all I’ve seen so many people I haven’t seen in way too long. Liz Callaway and I were talking about it – shockingly, I hadn’t seen her since just before the whole record label debacle of late 2001. I’ve met wonderful people, gotten to work with some terrific actors, and all that has been swellegant. It’s only the endless junk having to deal with endless problems, endless budget bumps (the latest of which I saw yesterday, and that, too, sent me through the roof – most of it having to do with our ex-costume designer and almost having to start over from scratch) – it just never stopped and it’s just been and continues to be a difficult situation.

But enough – we’ve got a show to do and by gum and by golly and buy bonds we’re going to do it! And, of course, we wish all the best to the twin opening nights of The Last Starfighter and Such Good Friends. I’m hoping for a good fifth show for us, so send all your excellent vibes and xylophones to all of us.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, get up, ship, inscribe cast gifts, go to the Acorn for the late-afternoon matinee of The Brain From Planet X, attempt to see dear reader Noel’s show, and then hopefully meet up with everyone afterwards. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Friday – what is currently in your CD player and your DVD/video player? I’ll start – CD, nothing. DVD, the new DVD of Funny Face, perhaps for Saturday viewing at some point. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, as we prepare for The Fifth Brain.
