THE THINGS

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I am sitting here like so much fish, listening to music having just finished eleven pages of writing (four more to go after I post these here notes), and now listening to one of the great jazz albums, Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue album, a total classic in every way. This is an SACD hybrid release, so at this moment I’m listening to the CD layer but will listen to the SACD on the big boy system today. One of the reasons the album is a classic is because it’s not only Miles at his most brilliant, it’s the other cream of the crop players and what they bring to the partay – they include Bill Evans (can’t do better than that), John Coltrane (can’t do better than that), Cannonball Adderley (can’t do better than that), as well as Paul Chambers, James Cobb, and Wynton Kelly, all at the top of their considerable games. There are only five tracks, but what tracks they are. One of them is considered to be one of the greatest jazz tracks ever recorded and it is – Blue in Green. A treat to hear it sounding this wonderful and crisp and clear and I’m sure the SACD layer will be even better. Prior to that, I tried watching some “thriller” on the Amazon Prime via Firestick thing, but it wasn’t very good, and I fell asleep for thirty minutes and then turned it off. Had a few allergy issues yesterday, too, so took a Claritin-D, which definitely helped a bit. And now it is time to write these here notes because that’s what must be done.

Yesterday was a weird day. I got up at noon after a bit more than six hours of sleep but fell back asleep for another hour. Of course, that threw the day out of whack, but I did my out of whack best. Before I could begin futzing and finessing, Jason Graae called, and we had a laugh-filled conversation for over an hour. That was a tonic, I must say. That only left me about ninety minutes before a Zoom thing with David Wechter, so I dove right into futzing and finessing. The first six of the sixteen pages I’d written were pretty simple, futzing and finessing-wise, but the rest required a lot of revising, adding, subtracting and smoothing out. I only got about ten pages of the sixteen done before the Zoom thing. And after the Zoom thing I had to run right to the early dinner thing with Robert Yacko.

We met at Art’s Deli. There was only one other diner there besides us. I had my usual tri-salad thing and Robert had a cheese omelet thing, which he really liked. My tri-salad thing was excellent, but I got really full and took some of it home to eat later. We had fun yakking.

I then went to the mail place and picked up some packages, then came right home. I went right back to futzing and finessing and finished that, then wrote about five new pages. I took a break and tried to watch that thriller thing, and then I ate the rest of the tri-salad thing, after which it was back to the book thing, and I wrote another six pages and I’m now into a fun section that will be a little easier to write than the last few sequences. Then I started the Miles Davis thing and here I am, thinged out. Or perhaps you should just call me The Thing.

Today, I’ll be up when I’m up, I’ll do whatever needs doing, I’ll futz and finesse, I’ll write new pages, I’ll eat, I’ll hopefully pick up some packages, I’ll write more pages, I’ll take a break and watch something, then write more pages, and then listen and relax.

Tomorrow was supposed to be a she of the Evil Eye day but that’s not happening as she has a dental appointment. She’ll come the following Saturday, which is kind of annoying actually, as that’s our stumble-through day and I’d really rather not have to be up that early. Alas, that’s the way the cookie crumbles. I may see if she can come Friday instead. So, I’ll do the laundry thing so I can have clean sheets and towels and stuff, but mostly I’ll write and I’ll also send however many pages are done to Muse Margaret in PDF format. Sunday, I have a visitor coming at eleven-thirty and that will probably take an hour or so, the back to writing. Then next week is pretty much a writing week straight through.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up when I’m up, do whatever needs doing, futz and finesse, write new pages, eat, hopefully pick up packages, write more pages, take a break and watch something, write more pages, and then listen and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Friday – what is currently in your CD player and your DVD/Blu and Ray player? I’ll start – CD, Robert Casadesus playing the complete piano music of Ravel, a two-CD set of Columbia mono recordings. Blu-ray, The Beguiled, which I haven’t seen in over twenty years. Your turn. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happy to have had all the things I could have handled yesterday.
