ZONKED

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I am zonked. Yes, you heard it here, dear readers, I, BK, am zonked and here’s why. It was another night of three hours of sleep. So, as I did on the night I got four hours of sleep, I got in bed and took a nap earlier. In bed at six, slept until just before ten. I needed it but I hate napping in the evening because I get completely discombobulated or, at the very least, completely discomeugeneulated and instead of feeling twitchy and bitchy and manic, I feel groggy and foggy and logy. But glad I got the sleep. I’ve already shaved so I don’t have to do that in the morning, and now I am sitting here like so much fish, listening to the last of Gianni Schichi, the best of Il Trittico by Puccini, this performance quite good, conducted by Gabriele Santini and featuring Tito Gobbi and Victoria de los Angeles. Mr. Gobbi sounds just like Robert Weede – I wonder if he ever did The Most Happy Fella? Apparently not. Before the nap, I did manage to watch a motion picture on the Firestick thing via Amazon Prime entitled Columbiana, from the writers of Taken and very much typical of that and every other revenge and action film, except this one is really terrible. The editing is enough to cause one to have a seizure. In the normal scenes, there is an edit every second or two – not making that up and of course dramatically those edits are completely uncalled for and ridiculous. But that’s what these films do. During the fight scenes the editing accelerates and in the biggest of them I’d say there’s an edit every eighth of a second. That’s just inept and lazy filmmaking. You never see what’s actually going on, never have geography, it’s just inane. Zoe Caldwell is the star, and the bad CIA guy is like watching a high school actor – a silly performance. It wasn’t a hit, despite coming from the writers of Taken (Luc Besson and some other guy). The most interesting thing about it is it was meant to be a sequel to Leon: The Professional, with the Zoe Saldana character being the grown-up Natalie Portman. When that didn’t work out, they changed the story and came up with this thing. And then I watched the first twenty minutes of something called The Rock, which I’ve never seen. One of those Michael Bay things, but with a fun cast. I’ll finish that one up this evening.

Today, I’ll be up at eight-thirty, shower, and at around nine-fifteen I’ll mosey on over to the theater for our casting session. There are quite a few people signed up because we put it on the casting sites, but it’s been our experience that a good number of the people who sign-up and take slots don’t show up, something I will never understand. Hopefully, we’ll see some good people because we have a long way to go to a complete cast. After the casting session, we’ll go get some food and hammer out a first attempt at a schedule. Then I’ll hopefully pick up some packages and then come home and finish up the last of the liner notes and get them on their way, and then I can watch, listen, and relax.

Tomorrow is a ME day and there’ll be a fun late lunch/early dinner thing at a favorite jernt at four-thirty. The only other thing that might occur when I get back is a Zoom thing with David Wechter. Then this week is continuing to prep L.A. Now and Then – I have to update a few things in the ”Now” portion of the show – it’s amazing how fast things date. It’s only been six years since we did the show, and yet a few things are completely ancient now. There’ll be meetings and meals and whatnot, too.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up at eight-thirty, shower, have a casting session, lunch and hammer out a first attempt at a schedule, hopefully pick up packages, and then watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: Naps – yay or nay? How do you feel when you wake up from a nap? Did you have to take them in kindergarten or your first couple of grades in grammar school? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, glad I got some extra sleep on account of being zonked.
