LACKING A DAISICAL

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I spent a rather lackadaisical day being lackadaisical, which is what I enjoy doing on a lackadaisical day. Have you ever lacked a daisical? It’s no fun. One simply must have their daisical and rejoice in having it. Which, of course, reminds me of the story of The Randy Vicar and the Lackadaisical Daisical. You know, if anyone has a clew as to what the HELL I’m talking about, please keep it to yourself. Do not share that information with the public at large or even the public at small or medium. We’re off to a rousing start, are we not? I am sitting here like so much fish, listening to Dimitri Mitropoulos play Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis. I just love his music choices, I must say and have said. I mean, in one fell swoop we got Walton, Puccini, Mascagni, Menotti, Massenet, and Rachmaninov. And in a mere moment, we’ll get the Mahler first. Prior to that, I watched a motion picture that just hit (or dropped, as the kiddies say) on the Flix of Net, entitled The Good Nurse, starring the good Jessica Chastain and the good Eddie Redmayne. Based on a true crime story, the writers don’t invent a huge amount, which is refreshing – although they really shouldn’t invent anything. The two leads are fine and it’s directed without any of today’s “now” idiocy, and that’s refreshing. The one complete fail, of course, is the score, by something named Biosphere. It’s exactly what you’d think it would be coming from something named Biosphere – ambient droning with occasional notes – it does absolutely nothing to help the film, which could use a little help in that regard. But I found it interesting and enjoyed it for what it was.

I have to say, that as raw and untamed as Mitropoulos’ Mahler 1 is, I still find it fantastic. One does wish that Sony’s mastering guys would add a little realistic reverb to theses early completely dry recordings. It would make a world of difference, really.

Prior to all that, I was up for two hours or so in the night, but ultimately got seven hours of sleep, maybe even a bit more. Once up, I got good news that our very errant and truant three releases will finally be here on Wednesday, and we’ll get them shipped out as quickly as we possibly can. For food, I had California Chicken Café – one breast and a small thing of chicken pasta salad. I had some sweets here and that’s basically the only other food I had. I had several telephonic conversations, the most important of which was trying to get the logo for the new web series – we have a font picked but I’m waffling about it. I do like it and it looks fun with the photo it’s going with, but we’ll play with it some more. I also found a few other fonts I thought were interesting and I’ve passed those along to see what Doug thinks. I do trust him on these things – he has a great design eye.

I had a Zoom with David Wechter, we talked through what I wasn’t happy with, and now I’ll take a pass at that stuff and try to smooth it out and make it of a piece with the rest of the writing. It really is only about two and a half pages of stuff. Then I watched the movie, did some work on the computer, prepped for today’s recording and shoot, and then it was time to write these here lackadaisical notes.

Today, I’ll be up by nine-thirty, I’ll shower and get ready, then Cindy and Karen get here at eleven and we’ll mosey on over to the home studio of Tom Griep, where we’ll record Cindy’s song. Because she’s used to working with just a piano track, I think we’ll record to that, then lay the vocal over the orchestrated track and shoot to that one with her lip syncing. I’m hoping that all goes easily and smoothly. We shoot downtown in some building, then we’ll have a quick bite, then come back here. We’re hoping we can then take the hour or so to shoot her phone calls. That would wrap her and I think she’d like that and we’d have everything done so Marshall can begin cutting next week. After we finish, I may have a proper meal properly.

Tomorrow, we have a play-through of the Elmer Bernstein concert, then Robert Yacko arrives to sing through his songs. He and I will then go have a nice meal somewhere. Sunday is a ME day and is also Halloween. As with last year, I’m not really in a mood to hand out candies, so I’ll keep the front porch light off and just relax. Then next week is finishing choosing songs for the Kritzerland show and getting everyone their music, shipping out the errant and truant CDs as well as the remainder of the Indiegogo stuff. I’m still not sure how we’ll ship the posters and art – have to be VERY careful with all that. There’ll be a few meetings and meals and one last rehearsal for the Bernstein concert, which I probably won’t attend, and then we do the thing on Sunday the sixth.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up by nine-thirty, shower and get ready, record Cindy’s song, shoot Cindy’s song, eat, hopefully shoot Cindy’s phone call scenes, and then have a proper meal. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Friday – what is currently in your CD player and your DVD/Blu and Ray player? I’ll start – CD, I have things I need to upload to a thumb drive then to the big boy computer. Blu-ray, I have a bunch sitting on the couch and I’ll choose one and watch. Your turn. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, as I bring these notes lackadaisical notes to a lackadaisical conclusion.
