MELLOW YELLOW

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I am listening to mellow music and therefore I am in a mellow mood whilst writing these here notes. Hence, these here notes will be mellow (wollem, spelled backwards). Of course, when one is mellow one just writes words without giving them much thought, because giving them much thought would then cause the mellow to turn to Jell-O and perhaps even turn yellow. And, of course, if my mellow were to turn yellow they could call me mellow yellow. I am in the zone, as it were and furthermore, the zone is in me. Therefore, the zone and I are one. It occurs to me that I don’t have a clew as to what the HELL I’m going on about. Well, there now, you see – I’m slightly less mellow now. Oh, and how many of you immediately sang “They call me mellow yellow” when you read it? Speaking of mellow yellow, yesterday was a Tuesday that seemed like a Monday. For example, I got up quite early, too early, but I couldn’t sleep because I was not feeling mellow or yellow. So, I did some work on the computer, then did some rewrites on the finale of the musical I’m mentoring, sent them off, and then went back to bed. Whilst lying curled up in a little ball, I had a Brainstorm about a different way to open Nudie Musical – I made some notes on my bedside pad, and then promptly fell asleep. My Bedside Pad – that’s the title of my next novel. Or, if I decide to write a novel about hospital patients, I’ll change the title to My Bedside Pan. I woke up two hours later. I looked at my notes and liked the idea of it, so I sat down at the piano and figured out the first part of it. One of my big concerns with the stage version of Nudie all along has been the five-and-a-half page scene the opens the show – basically the same scene as the film, just tighter and more economical. That sets the plot in motion and then on page six we finally have the first song, the title song. But, there aren’t many musicals that open with a longish scene before the first number. There are SOME, but not a lot. But I could never think of anything to do so instead was starting off with a little musical prelude over some projections of movie posters and Variety headlines. But I didn’t love that idea – the idea that I finally thought of this morning inserts a little minute-and-a-half musical number before the first scene – basically doing what the projections of the posters and Variety headlines were doing, but in song – just giving us a little history of the world we’re about to enter and how said world is in a slump. I got the first part of it pretty good, and now I’m just working on the second part and how it will segue directly into the scene. I’ve very excited to have thought of it and I think it will really help. After that, my friend Marlana came over – she’s taking part in both readings. I taught her some new music and put some things down on tape for her. Around that time, the electricians arrived. My Handy Man arrived soon thereafter and it became apparent he was fed up with the electricians and he sent them away. He then spent then next six hours doing a lot of rewiring, putting two new breakers in the house electrical box, and finally all is well in electrical land and we shouldn’t really have any further problems. During that time, I did a few errands, picked up a couple of packages, wrote a lot of e-mails, and worked on the new Nudie opening. I was finally so hungry I ran and got some Popeye’s. After that, I sat on my couch like so much fish.

I didn’t really have the energy to watch a motion picture on DVD, and I realized that because the electricity was off in the den for the last three days, I missed some things I was TIVOing. One thing that did get TIVOd looks intriguing – a film from the early 1970s entitled Raw Meat. I’ll try to watch it soon.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because frankly I’m still feeling mellow yellow and have no need to remain in this section.

Today, I shall be doing Nudie work for most of the day – rewrites, figuring out some new intros and outros, and casting the rest of the roles as best I can. Miss Beth Malone may or may not come by to learn some music – if not today, then tomorrow. And then, if all goes according to plan, I’ll go to Mr. Grant Geissman’s home environment between six and seven, and we’ll enter all my galley corrections, do the few font and style things and then I’ll print out one final copy to proof one more time.

I think I have things this weekend, but I cannot remember what they might be. I’m feeling a little disorganized and I’ll be addressing said disorganization today and tomorrow. I’ll also continue proofing the Brain piano/vocal scores elmore sent. That’s a task but it must be done. And I’ll be taking my final look at the Brain script to make sure it’s completely correct.

Oh, I see we should all put on our pointy party hats and our colored tights and pantaloons, I see we should all break out the cheese slices and the ham chunks, I see we should all dance the Hora and the Swim, because today is the birthday of our very own song-of-the-day man, Arnold M. Brockman. So, let’s give a big haineshisway.com birthday cheer to our very own song-of-the-day man, Arnold M. Brockman. On the count of three: One, two, three – A BIG HAINESHISWAY.COM BIRTHDAY CHEER TO OUR VERY OWN SONG-OF-THE-DAY MAN, ARNOLD M. BROCKMAN!!!

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do Nudie work, and then enter galley fixes, and I must also find something interesting for my meal. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Ask BK Day, the day in which you get to ask me or any dear reader any old question you like and we get to give any old answer we like. So, let’s have loads of lovely questions and loads of lovely answers and loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I continue to feel both mellow and yellow, not necessarily in that order.
