Well, dear readers, I must write these here notes in a hurry because the time has gotten away from me just as I’ve gotten away from the time, not necessarily in that order. I watched two motion pictures last night, so that was relaxing and I needed to relax. The first motion picture is one I’ve seen several times and one I really like, The Boy Who Could Fly and I liked seeing it again very much, although it’s one misstep is so huge that I get irked every time I see the movie – The Dead Zone has a similar misstep that hurts an otherwise great film and it would be so easy to correct it in both instances. We have a movie called The Boy Who Could Fly – great. The entire movie plays with us about whether that’s actually true, and the film builds that all along the way. Then the lead girl has an accident and we don’t know how she survived it. Good. But in the hospital, we then get a dream sequence and in that dream the boy tells her he can fly and off they go, flying. And when we finally find out whether the boy can really fly, we’ve already seen it and it totally robs the real moment of all its magic and power. All you’d have to do is remove the dream sequence and everything works much better. Similarly, in The Dead Zone we’re presented with a charismatic political candidate, Greg Stillman, played by Martin Sheen. And then we get a scene where he and his henchman strong-arm a newspaper man in a vicious way. Nope. It gives away the game as to who, person-wise, Stillman really is. It should be a shock moment when he shakes hands with Christopher Walken and Walken sees a vision of the future and Stillman’s real self. The strong-arm scene robs us of that shock moment. Again, it’s one simple lift and everything works better. I’m always surprised that no one feels as I do about those sequences, but every time I see them it feels completely wrong to me. But overall, The Boy Who Could Fly is very sweet, and all the actors are terrific, including Bonnie Bedelia as the mom, Fred Savage as her young son, Jay Underwood as the boy who could fly, Fred Gwynne as his alcoholic uncle, Colleen Dewhurst as a sympathetic teacher, Louise Fletcher as a psychiatrist in the hospital, and especially Lucy Deakins as Bedelia’s daughter – she’s the heart and soul of the film and she’s wonderful. I cannot fathom why she didn’t have a huge career. Well, actually, let’s find out why, shall we?
Well, she did five movies, four of which I’ve never seen. She did a little TV, too, but her final acting job seems to have been in 2002. She’s now a lawyer and a partner in a Colorado law firm, married with three children. So, that answers that question. After that, it was more work on the project with David Wechter. We’re almost done now and that will be IT on this thing until something happens with it, which we are praying will be the case.
Yesterday was okay, save for the fact I only got four hours of sleep. So, a longer day than usual. I did stuff from seven-thirty in the morning until around eleven, when I went and picked up a package and got another Fatburger and fries to bring home. I ate it and it was good, but I think I need a burger break – too many recently. That was it for food except for a couple of tablespoons of peanut butter and some salt water taffy. I read the play I had to read, I did some book stuff, I did some project stuff and then I finally did my viewing stuff.
Today, I’ll try to be up by eleven at the latest and do whatever needs doing, I may or may not have a Zoom with David Wechter, then I have a late lunch meeting at three that will probably last an hour, then I’ll come right home, do stuff, and then watch, listen, and relax. And, of course, pray for some major miracles.
Tomorrow, I’m not sure what will be going on, same for Sunday and I guess Monday is a holiday, so that’s nice.
Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up by eleven at the latest, do whatever needs doing, maybe have a Zoom thing, have a lunch meeting, do stuff, and then watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Friday – what is currently in your CD player and your DVD/Blu and Ray player? I’ll start – CD, nothing. Blu-ray, nothing. Your turn. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, hoping I don’t have another sleepless in Sherman Oaks night.
