USING THE WORD RUTABAGA

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, this month is flying by, like a gazelle eating a rutabaga whilst reading the memoir of Ruta Lee. I, myself, have never eaten a rutabaga and we’ll just stop right there. Otherwise, it was yet another day of writing and occasionally watching irritating YouTube videos. I know this gets boring to read about but that’s the way it’s been. We CAN talk about desperately needing a modern major miracle before everything goes to hell in a Winnebago. Yes, we CAN talk about that. I CAN tell you that I had a very good patty melt and fries for my main meal, at the Coral Café, a late lunch with Marshall Harvey. Prior to that, I stopped by the Group Rep Theater to see a bit of act two of a show that’s playing there – today was the closing – only a five or six performance run. It’s a play written and performed by deaf actors and voiced by live actors sitting off to the side. I was actually there not to see the play at all, but to check out the lighting and projections, both of which were of high quality. We’re going to think about hiring the lighting guy for the musical I’ll be directing. I watched about twenty minutes of it.

What else happened yesterday? I got nine hours of sleep. That happened yesterday. I futzed and finessed and wrote about four pages before having to leave. I didn’t get back until almost five-thirty. Then I spent almost forty minutes trying to find something in the garage, so I didn’t get back to writing until almost seven. I was in the middle of a new sequence, so I just jumped right back in and wrote eight more pages.

Then I took what we wags call a break and that is when I sat on my couch like so much fish and watched irritating YouTube videos that were irritating and on YouTube. I did fall asleep for about thirty minutes. Then I went back to writing and wrote four more pages, for a total of sixteen. Only a couple more pages and this manuscript will be over 400 pages. Novella my ASS. Looking ahead, if I can keep the final two chapters to about fifteen pages each, then I think I can bring this book in at about 460 manuscript pages, which would make a book length of about 350, I suspect, depending on the layout. We shall see. But I’m definitely entering the home stretch.

Today, I’ll be up by ten-thirty at the latest, I’ll futz and finesse and try to write a new page or two, then I’ll shave and shower and have a lunch meeting that could result in an interesting project. After that, I’ll come right home and get back to writing, but before doing that, I’ll send Muse Margaret around 100 new pages. Then I’ll try to write ten to fourteen pages. The watch, listen, and relax thing is a moot point until I’ve finished the book.

Tomorrow and the rest of the week is all writing, a couple of meetings and meals, and I’m hoping that I’ll finish the book by the end of the week or weekend.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up by ten-thirty at the latest, futz and finesse and try to write a new page or two, shave and shower, have a noon o’clock lunch meeting, come home, send Muse Margaret the latest batch of pages, and then try to write ten to fourteen new pages. Today’s topic of discussion: What kinds of things to you enjoy watching on the Tube of You. What are your favorite things you’ve found there? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happy to have used the word rutabaga and the name Ruta Lee in the same sentence, always a cause for celebration.
