Well, dear readers, I am sitting here like so much late fish – well, not late like in dead fish but late as in like late fish, notes-wise. In other words, it’s late, and I don’t care who knows it. I didn’t get home until ten-forty due to not leaving the theater until ten-fifteen, and then making a pit stop at Gelson’s and getting a small Caesar, no chicken. I came home and ate it and just had to unwind and now I’m all unwound and an unwound BK is all over the place, as you can probably tell from these here notes. I’ve now heard from two people who feature in Kritzer World who’ve read the book and I’m thankful that both really seemed to enjoy it. One has a rather prominent role, but the book is, of course, fiction. And last night we, of course, had a rehearsal. We picked up where we left off, three scenes into act one and we got up to the point where we’d already done the detail work a few days ago. I put some new bits in, stuff that just came to me as I watched, and we drilled a few things and where I know the dialogue has to move quickly, I snapped for the pace I wanted then had them match that and when they did it was really fun. The best thing I did was in You and I – I just really wanted a laugh at the start of the song and there really isn’t one until the end of the second verse, so I added some business for the one young character in the show and that bit made everything about the song work. So, that was good. Anyway, I’d hoped to run some other stuff, but these cleanup sessions really run long, but I know they’re extremely helpful for the cast. But for the first time doing the majority of the act I began to see the shape of it and two of the production numbers started to look really good. Small steps, but at least they’re steps.
Yesterday began with an irritating text from the sender of irritating texts, which I ignored. I only got six hours of sleep and I really needed the eight. I had some telephonic conversations, answered e-mails, did a few things on the computer, and had a yummilicious lean pastrami with coleslaw and Russian dressing from Daughter’s Deli, with a 50% off coupon and a little credit left over from an item that was left out of an order. I didn’t get much relaxing done, but the afternoon didn’t last long enough and then I had to shave and shower and mosey on over to the theater. And here we are. Late as in late, not the other kind.
Today, I’ll be up by eleven at the latest, I’ll do whatever needs doing, then I’ll get myself presentable and present myself at the bank to make a deposit, then I’ll mosey on over to the mail place and I’m hoping that the hardcover of Kritzer World will have arrived by then and if it has I should have just enough time to call and place the book order and then it should just be a couple of weeks until they arrive, although I’m always hopeful it will be faster. Then I’ll go grab something to eat, then go to the theater and dry tech our show. I always enjoy seeing the lighting and writing of cues. The cast will arrive at six-thirty and we’ll run one musical number from act one, just so everyone remembers the bits I put in a few days ago when we ran it. Then we’re going to the top of the show and running act one with no stopping. If someone needs a line they shout line, get it and say it – no going back, always moving forward. All the scene changes have been set and all that will help me know what ballpark we’re in, run time-wise, and how the show will flow and if we need any longer scene change scoring and all that kind of thing. I’m also hoping we can squeeze in the second act, which is much shorter than the first. Then I’ll come home and relax.
Tomorrow, she of the Evil Eye comes, but that’s fine because I have to be at the theater for the sitzprobe from ten to twelve. Then there’ll be a food break for about ninety minutes, then we’ll slog through a cue to cue. Then another break and at six we’ll begin a straight-ahead run-through with lights – no stopping, not even for lighting mistakes. We’ll just take notes. Sunday, I’m hoping to get in two run-throughs, one of which will add sound and costumes. Some folks have asked if they could come to the theater on their day off and do a line-through and I’m all for that. I don’t need to be there, but I know it would be beneficial to those who need it. Tuesday is our final dress, and then we preview on Wednesday and Thursday, and open on Friday.
Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up by eleven at the latest, do whatever needs doing, do banking, hopefully pick up the hardcover and place the order, eat, do a dry tech, and then do a run-through. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Friday – what is currently in your CD player and your DVD/Blu and Ray/streaming player? I’ll start – nothing. Your turn. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happy to finally be seeing the shape of things, show-wise.
