SIX TINY FISH STICKS STUCK IN SOME UPSIDE DOWN NOTES

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I am feeling quite upside down at the moment, perhaps because I am listening to the soundtrack from The Poseidon Adventure by Mr. John Williams, his first but not last score for a disaster movie. It’s quite a good score, but very different from his other disaster movie scores. I feel these here notes should be upside down, don’t you? In other breaking bombshell news, I am making six tiny fish sticks, which is also the title of my next novel. I am making them on the stove in a frying pan and then when they are done, I shall eat said fish sticks whilst writing these here upside-down notes. Earlier in the evening, I went to our brush-up rehearsal, gave some notes before and after the first act, and left after the first number in act two because I didn’t really need to be there. I came right home, stopping for person or food. There was a police car next to me for the first two miles, just begging for me to do something wrong. I did not oblige. It was still a bit rainy on the way home, but not as rainy as it was earlier, when it was coming down pretty good in the Oaks of Sherman. And prior to that, I did finish watching The Eiger Sanction, which is exactly as I remembered it. Great mountain stuff, lame plot, twist you can see coming five miles away and which makes no sense and provides a weak finish. The photography is beautiful, and the transfer is very nice. And the score by Mr. Williams is lovely. Fish sticks are done and I’m waiting for them to cool off so I don’t burn my tongue or the roof of my mouth. The Trader Joe’s tartar sauce is not very good, but I had some ranch dressing from Popeye’s left over and that’s kind of perfect. Earlier, I got eight hours of sleep, got up, had a series of irritating texts, answered e-mails, decided to Zoom today rather than yesterday, did some organizing, went to In ‘N’ Out at one-thirty for food, but the drive-up line was almost two long blocks long and as I drove by I could see that inside was jammed, every table taken and long lines to place orders, so I got away from there pronto and went to Gelson’s. They had my onion rolls, so I got those and a can of tuna and an onion, came home and made two yummilicious tuna sandwiches. Then I listened to some music, watched some irritating YouTube videos, finished the movie after dozing off for about twenty minutes, then I moseyed on over to the theater, stayed for half the brush-up, came home, made six tiny fish sticks, four of which I’ve already finished, and here we are.

What is fascinating about The Poseidon Adventure score is how dissonant it is a lot of the time. It does have a main theme and of course it has the song “There’s Got to Be a Morning After,” but given where disaster scores went after this film, the dissonance is interesting and it works fine in the film, obviously. It isn’t that easy writing upside down notes, if you must know and you must. Hard to believe that November is half over. Now I’m thinking about making six more tiny fish sticks.

Today, I’ll be up when I’m up, I’ll have an early lunch, I think, pray for several modern major miracles or it will be time to put the oversized Jew head in the oven, which I’ll preheat to 450, I’ll Zoom then get back to work on the project with David Wechter, and then at some point I can watch, listen, and relax.

Tomorrow will be more of the same, as will Friday, Saturday she of the Evil Eye comes and Sunday will be a ME day. Then it’s Thanksgiving week.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up when I’m up, have an early lunch, pray for several modern major miracles, Zoom, then watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: What frozen foods did you eat when you were but a wee bairn – TV dinners, other stuff – and which were your favorites and which made you want to vomit on the ground? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happy to have eaten six tiny fish sticks whilst writing upside down notes.
