WHAT CAN I SAY ABOUT YESTERDAY?

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, what can I say about yesterday that hasn’t already been said? Actually, I don’t know what the HELL has been said about yesterday. I am in the dark as to what’s been said about yesterday. I am not in the know about what was said yesterday, although that could also be written as I am knot in the no about what was said about yesterday, that is if you were both a contrarian and illiterate, and who isn’t? Speaking of who isn’t, I am sitting here like so much fish, listening to the Jimmy Smith album Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf from 1964 on Verve. Verve was one of the greatest jazz labels ever, perhaps THE jazz label of the 1960s especially. Their roster of artists was amazing, but they were also extremely adventurous in allowing those artists to BE artists and go out on limbs, hence we got albums like Bill Evans’ Conversations with Myself and Bill Evans with Symphony Orchestra, we got Wes Montgomery with any number of great arrangers, Jimmy Smith with Lalo Schifrin and, on the Virginia Woolf album with Oliver Smith and Claus Ogerman. Add to that, Cal Tjader, Kai Winding, Ella Fitzgerald, Count Basie, Oscar Peterson, Gil Evans, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Astrud Gilberto, Gary McFarland, Lalo Schifrin, Willie Bobo, Don Sebesky, and so many others, and that doesn’t include any of the 1950s greats who recorded for Verve. I had so many Verve albums, many of which I simply took a chance on because their covers were so intriguing. Anyway, haven’t heard this Jimmy Smith album in ages and it’s just great. But back to yesterday, the day that I have little to say about due to its being so brief. I initially got two hours of sleep, arising at five or thereabouts. Went back to bed for an hour but could not fall asleep. So, I just watched some irritating YouTube videos. Then I watched two hours of that truly irritating travesty with Fani Willis BS with a judge who is allowing the defense way too much leeway with personal questions that are based on lies and innuendo. The lawyer for the defense is disgusting – uppity, full of herself, haranguing, obnoxious – believe me, I’ve seen some of the worst of the worst and this woman is right up there. This shouldn’t even be going on – as Ms. Willis said rather forcefully, she’s not on trial here. Whether one likes or doesn’t like her, this is just another example of a justice system run amok. I finally had to shut it off because I could not listen to that woman’s voice one second more. I went back to bed at ten or thereabouts and slept until about two, so maybe five or six hours of sleep that seemed like two.

Once up, I had a lot of e-mails to answer, and I needed to eat something quickly, so one of those smash burger jernts that are now everywhere was having a 25% off thing on DoorDash, so I ordered one burger, no fries or onion rings. It arrived about twenty minutes later and it was like every other smash burger I’ve had – very good for a smash burger. They do get tiresome after a bit. After a bit, one does desire an actual burger that looks like a burger, if you get my meaning. Then I did a bit of organizing that needed doing. The day was basically done by that point. I did a few things that needed doing, too, and then I made a little spaghetti for a snack – only about four ounces. That was good. No dessert. Then I watched an hour-long interview with Truman Capote and David Susskind. The latter was thoroughly obnoxious, and the former is simply one of the weirdest people ever. He’d just had a face lift and he looked even weirder than usual. We also shipped out the Follies orders for the past year and a half. Hopefully, that will be a pleasant surprise for those receiving it.

Today, I’ll be up when I’m up and have to deal with a little merde, then I’m writing liner notes and the project with David Wechter. I’ll eat something light – might go get some hot dogs or make tuna sandwiches – we’ll see what I’m in the mood for. Then I can watch, listen, and relax.

The weekend is anyone’s guess, but hopefully I can relax a bit and smell the roses. Wouldn’t THAT be a nice change of pace. Next week will be very busy.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up when I’m up, deal with merde, write, eat, then watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Friday – what is currently in your CD player and your DVD/Blu and Ray/streaming player? I’ll start – who knows? Your turn. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happy to have finally said something about yesterday that wasn’t already said.
