February 29, 2024:

DOUBLE TROUBLE

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, the other night a weird thing happened. In other news, it’s the final day of February. How can that be? February flew by, like a gazelle doing the six-minute mile in forty-eight minutes. And tomorrow we’ll be marching into March, and it is my fervent hope and prayer that March will be a month filled with health, wealth, happiness, creativity, and all things bright and beautiful. Oh, and one other thing – the other night a weird thing happened. I’m finding the weird thing that happened a little alarming. No, it has nothing to do with farming and it’s not exactly charming, nor disarming. The weird thing includes two for the price of one, double the pleasure, double the fun, double down, and double trouble. You see, the other night I began to see double. Out of the blue. It was quite weird. I didn’t notice it with my reading glasses on although I have noticed that my right eye is now slightly out of focus with the reading glasses. But I sure noticed it when I tried to watch something on TV. I will say that it seems to come and go. But today, while driving to Gelson’s it was very irritating and slightly disorienting. I researched it just now, and it sounds like I may have the beginnings of a cataract in one eyeball. It happens to the elderly, but who the HELL said I’m elderly? Damn them, damn them all to HELL. Anyway, to coin a phrase, I’ll keep my eye on it to see how it goes and if it gets worse, then I’ll have to see what the surgery will be. As I said, it comes and goes, rather like my sanity and vanity, not necessarily in that order. Who decided February would be a short month? Clearly, someone short. It makes no sense and it’s irritating to have a short month. Anyway, I am sitting here like so much fish not doing much of anything. In fact, I didn’t do much of anything yesterday. I slept nine and a half hours and got up at two-thirty. That was quite late in the day. I answered lots of e-mails, and then went to Gelson’s and got roast beef, ham, and turkey – four ounces of each – along with some rye bread and a couple of things I needed. I really wanted wry bread, you know, bread with a humorous attitude, but they were out. I came home and made one roast beef sandwich and one turkey sandwich on rye, which I ate wryly. Just some lettuce, thousand island dressing and a slice of cheese. They were fine. After that, I had a nice telephonic conversation with a nice fellow who wanted my opinion on something. I gave it to him. He took it. Then I watched some irritating YouTube videos on the computer, and the first fifteen minutes of the Kennedy Center production of A Little Night Music, which, I hate to say it, isn’t much to my liking. I may watch a bit more since it’s nice to hear the orchestra. Around eight, I had a ham sandwich. Total calories are probably just over 1000 and I had no sweets or anything else. That is going to be my goal until I start losing some damn weight. At ten, I had to go back to Gelson’s for beverages – they’re still on sale so I saved around eight bucks. Then I moseyed on over to CVS and got more Pepcid with a 40% off coupon. I’d put it on my CVS card but as sometimes happens at this store (too often) it didn’t show up when they looked for it. But I’d learned my lesson from the previous time it happened and had the e-mail with the coupon on the phone. I showed it to him, it was good until midnight, it showed that I’d put it on the card, and it had the number of the coupon. He put that in, and it wouldn’t take it, but he did the right thing and gave me the 40% off. They really should fix the problem. And here we are.

Today, I’ll be up when I’m up, I’ll do whatever needs doing, I’ll have a telephonic conversation with David Wechter, I’ll write, I’ll call the mail place to see if the important envelopes are there and if they are I’ll go get them. I think I’ll have a salad for food – that’s the easiest way to stay at 1000 calories – and then I’ll watch, listen, and relax.

Tomorrow and the weekend – I’m hoping the two other blurbs arrive so we can get the back cover of the book done, and we’ll make the book available for pre-order. Then next week is lots of writing.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do whatever needs doing, have a phone conversation, write, call the mail place and go if what I need is there, eat, and then watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: Has anyone had cataract surgery and if so what kind – standard or laser? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, hoping I’m not having TOO much double trouble.
