THE WENDING OF SUNDAY INTO MERRY MONDAY

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, as Sunday wends its merry way to Monday, I am sitting here like so much fish, listening to Vladimir Cosma’s beautiful score to a French motion picture I really loved back when it came out, Salut L’artiste, which was directed by Yves Robert and starring a brilliant cast including Marcello Mastroianni and Jean Rochefort. Cosma is a fantastic maker of melody, and, of course, it doesn’t hurt to have Toots Thielmans on harmonica. It’s out on Blu-ray and I may pick it up at some point, unless I can find it streaming, which I doubt. I had the LP of this back in 1973 and played it to death. If you don’t know Cosma, just give a listen to his scores to My Father’s Glory and My Mother’s Castle – stunning and on the Tube of You and both films were directed by the same Yves Robert. Otherwise, it was another evening of trying to find any movie that piqued my interest other than something I’ve seen a gazillion times. Amazing how hard that is. So, I just dozed on and off and that was pretty much the evening. Earlier, I got eight hours of sleep, got up, and realized the matinee wasn’t at two, it was at four. So, I ordered a chopped Eyetalian salad from CPK and that got here in short order and was very good. It really is mostly lettuce with just a bits of salami and turkey, but I do enjoy it. I shaved and showered and then I headed over to the theater to see a play about Leni Riefenstahl meeting Walt Disney, in which two actors play multiple characters. I didn’t think too much of the play itself – just not my thing, although perhaps a different approach would have held my interest more. The audience seemed to enjoy it. The actors were fine, and the set was nice as was the lighting. Obviously, someone put money into the production – a co-production. Anyway, it was ninety minutes. After the show, I stopped at Gelson’s and got a really small half rack of ribs, plus the makings for faux chicken stroganoff for today’s food. I came home and ate the ribs, which were tiny but good, a perfect little snack. Then I did some writing, just a page and a half, although I may do another page before going to bed, and here we are.

Today, I’ll be up when I’m up, I’ll do whatever needs doing, I’ll make a stab at the show order, I’ll start to compile the commentary since we’re doing a lot of songs we’ve done before it shouldn’t be too daunting, I’ll make the faux chicken stroganoff, I’ll call the mail place and see if anything is there, which I doubt, I’ll do a little writing, although I think I’ve done as much as I want in advance of really starting on January 1, and then at some point I’ll watch, listen, and relax.

The rest of the week is more of the same, with some meetings and meals, some going and doing and doing and going, setting up some auditions for Drat! The Cat! in December, with final casting and callbacks happening after the first of the year, talking to set designers and hopefully snagging one, and then hopefully a quiet weekend.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up when I’m up, do whatever needs doing, make a show order, compile commentary, eat, check with the mail place, do a bit of writing, and then watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: If you’ve seen any motion pictures recently that you think I and others might enjoy – not new stuff – pass the suggestions along, including documentaries. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, as the wending of Sunday into Monday continues unabated.
