THE TOWERING INFERNO

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, as you may know, our fair city has been an inferno since Tuesday. They have finally contained a bit of the worst fire, but new fires keep popping up, some of which are thought to be arson. I suppose there are enough sickos out there who do this sort of thing, and I hope if they’re caught and convicted, that they’ll be sentenced to the full extent of the law. Many people have lost their homes and belongings. It is tragic. The firefighters keep at it, and they all deserve medals for their courage and persistence. So, let’s send our strongest most excellent vibes and xylophones for this madness to end. And now, back to our regularly scheduled notes.

I don’t know what’s with this week, but I have been confused about what day it is every day. It keeps feeling like the weekend. I thought yesterday was today, I thought Wednesday was Saturday – I mean, what gives? I was sure today was Saturday. Anyway, as it turns out, yesterday was Thursday, not Friday. On Thursday, I had mostly a writing day with many interruptions. I got eight hours of sleep, arising at eleven-thirty. At noon o’clock, I began futzing and finessing – nothing major this time – just typos, missing words, smoothing out, and just a handful of deletions and additions. Once that was out of the way, I wrote two new pages, had some interruptions, made Wacky Noodles for food, ate said food, wrote three more new pages, had more interruptions, had some telephonic conversations, wrote a few more pages, then had to take a viewing break.

I ended up watching an early 90s TV movie entitled In the Deep Woods, starring Roseanna Arquette and Anthony Perkins – his final appearance – he passed away a month before the movie aired on NBC. It was quite horrible, I thought, nonsensical, really, with the leading lady changing her mind every four seconds as to who the serial killer might be. Lots of loose ends that remain loose, and Mr. Perkins, sad to say, is not very good in it and I say that as an ardent fan. After that, I watched twenty minutes of Dario Argento’s third film, Four Flies on Gray Velvet, the last movie he made before he went hyper violent. So far, it’s not as good as The Bird with the Crystal Plumage or Cat o’ Nine Tails. Part of the reason for that is the leading man – Michael Brandon – who is just completely irritating in the movie. He sure worked a lot back then, though, but I never cared for him, I’m afraid. I’ll finish it today at some point. Then it was back to writing until it was time to write these here notes. So far, ten pages and the hope is five more after I post these here notes.

Today, I’ll try to be up by eleven, I’ll futz and finesse, I’ll write new pages, I’ll try to remember that it’s Friday. Wait a darn minute – it WAS Friday. I think I may need a lobotomy. So, today IS Saturday. This is insanity at its finest. Pay no attention to that man behind the keyboard. Where was I? I’ll try to remember that it’s Saturday, I’ll go to the mail place and I may stop at Macy’s to return something, I’ll eat something amusing, write more new pages, and then at some point watch, listen, and relax.

Tomorrow, I’ll just write most of the day and evening. Monday, I have to go to the eye surgeon even though I haven’t had the open MRI – don’t know why, really, and it’s a drive I’d much prefer not making, but now I must and it’s a 10:45 appointment, so there will be some traffic. But I’m not leaving over two HOURS ahead as I did last time. After the appointment, I’ll come right home to write, and that will consume the rest of the day. The rest of the week will be more of the same, and I think we’re trying to have our next casting session on Thursday evening.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, try to be up by eleven, futz and finesse, write new pages, go to the mail place, maybe do a return at Macy’s, eat, write more new pages, and then watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: What are your favorite songs that Dean Martin sang? I’ll start – I loved his version of Volare and a song called Return to Me, That’s Amore, Memories are Made of This, and Let it Snow, Let it Snow. Your turn. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, hoping and praying our towering inferno goes away soon.
