THE RETURN OF THE LEADING LADY

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, we had us another fun rehearsal and the easiest one for me because our choreographer was there to do Dancing with Alice, so I just had the pleasure of watching her work. This was her big number to do, and she did a great job. She also finesses stuff I do. We work really well together. So, that’s a huge thing out of the way. There were two other scenes to stage – the lead-in to the Dancing with Alice number, and then an earlier scene lead-in to Holmes and Watson. Our leading lady was back with us and that was great. New energy in the room. There were a few people left from the scenes who stayed to watch them do Holmes and Watson – and I must say, they remembered everything really well. Ever since I woke up the computer when I got back home, it’s been behaving very poorly – slow, spinning wheel when trying to do anything, really irritating. And it’s not nearly time for its ubiquitous freeze, either. Anyway, rehearsal was good, we did run the opening number a few times and I blocked our leading lady into the overture bits, and I restaged the middle bit so that it might actually work. Prior to all that, I got a whopping ten hours of sleep with some of the weirdest most disturbing dreams ever. Once up, I answered a plethora of e-mails, had some telephonic conversations, had a Subway Eyetalian sub for food, did some prep work for the rehearsal, showered, and then I moseyed on over to the theater. After rehearsal, I came right home and had a beef stick and some chips for a snack whilst dealing with this ancient pelican of a computer. And here we are. Oh, I also got the shocking news that Paul Ford, who worked regularly with Mr. Stephen Sondheim and Mandy Patinkin passed away yesterday. Just sitting on his couch with a sandwich he was apparently about to eat.

Today, I’ll be up when I’m up, I’ll do whatever needs doing, I’ll eat something light but fun, then we have a two o’clock production meeting via Zoom – that should probably take thirty to forty minutes, then I’ll shave and shower and then we have our rehearsal. The choreographer will be back with us to do the first part of Dancing with Alice, the duet that leads into the full production number. Then we’ll warm up with the Overture/Opening Number so that Cheryl can see it and clean it up if she needs to. Then we’ll attack the ten-page scene that follows Dancing with Alice. It’s complicated because it also includes a short reprise of Drat! The Cat! My hope is that I can get it all done in two hours. IF I do, then I can put our leading lady into the act one theft of the Japanese Idol ballet. After that, I’ll come home and relax.

Tomorrow is CAT scan day and I’m just trying to be relaxed about it, but I don’t like totally unknown territory, so we’ll just have to see HOW relaxed I am. After it’s done, I’ll go somewhere fun for food, as I don’t want to deal with traffic at rush hour. I haven’t been to Musso and Frank in years, so maybe that, maybe Genghis Cohen, maybe Du-Par’s or something in Farmer’s Market. We shall see. Saturday, we deep dive into act two. Some of act two is done already and if we can get most of the smaller stuff out of the way, that will just leave a big courtroom scene and the finale. I’m really hoping we can be finished blocking completely by next Thursday. That would put us right on schedule. Sunday can be a ME day, and maybe even Monday can be a ME day, then we’re back and heading toward the blocking finish line. Once all the blocking is done, then I’ll do my usual clean-up and adjustments to the numbers I staged, and Cheryl will do the same.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up when I’m up, do whatever needs doing, eat something light, have a production meeting via Zoom, shave and shower, have a rehearsal, then come home and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: What are your favorite submarine type sandwiches and which jernts do you like best? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happy we’ve had the return of the leading lady.
