THE EYE OF THE BEHOLDER

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I had my eye doctor appointment, and it wasn’t at all what I expected, which just goes to show you, one should never have expectations. I gave myself an hour and fifteen minutes to get there, even though it’s a twenty-minute drive, which is what it’s been the last few times. I was hoping it would be the same, but alas it was horrible. Approaching Mulholland, cars were backed up for almost a mile. It took twenty annoying minutes to finally pass Mulholland and even then, it was slow going over halfway down the hill. Why? Doing street work that they’ve seemingly been doing for the past year. Ridic. Once past that, it was fine. Drive time for the twenty-minute drive? One hour. I was taken in not too long after I arrived. First, a young gal did some color and vision tests. My left eye did great on the vision – the surprise was that my right eye didn’t do all that poorly. Then the doctor came in. He’d seen my CAT scans and confirmed my issue is not neural, so that was good. No sign of stroke, so I guess I didn’t have a minor one many months ago, so that was good news, too. Then he did his own tests with various prisms, compared the numbers with my last visit and gave me the astonishing news that in his opinion the weak muscle was healing itself because the number were better in every case except where I looked way up. Straight ahead, I’m pretty much seeing a single image. I asked him if we could schedule the surgery or whatever needed to be done and he said no – he wants me back in three months because he thinks the muscle will continue to strengthen on its own. So, I’ll be back in three months, and I hope he’s right, because I’m very nervous about any surgery that involves my eyes. I’ll continue to do what I’ve been doing – really working that eye and forcing it to align, which is what I do when watching a movie or TV. Part of me really wants this cleared up right now – it’s been almost a year now – but if that happens naturally over the next three months, I’d be jiggy with that. Interesting, no? I only got about four hours of sleep because that’s how I am when I have these morning appointments. My next appointment is an hour later, and that will make a difference, because when I was coming home an hour later the traffic going toward Mulholland was much better.

Right now, I’m listening to more Ormandy – the Dvorak violin concerto was first, then the Romance for violin and orchestra, and then a superb recording of the great Sibelius violin concerto – with Isaac Stern on violin for all those selections. And, of course, all in great stereo sound. Continuing yesterday, I stopped at Western bagel and got four bagels – three onion, one sesame, and some of their excellent cream cheese. I came home and had two count them two tuna sandwiches on the onion bagels – very good, but perhaps I used too many onions, because my tummy isn’t so happy right now.

Then I sat on my couch like so much fish, turned on the TV via the Firestick and began looking for a movie to watch. I scrolled down to the first list and instantly fell asleep. I woke up, I feel asleep, I woke up, I fell asleep and that went on for two HOURS, and each short sleep was accompanied by some completely wacko dream. Weird way to spend the waning hours of the afternoon. Then I finally watched a movie called Blank. Terrible low-budget affair – basically one setting for most of its run time and just two characters for most of its run time, which, sans end credits, is ninety minutes. That’s pretty short but not when the ninety seems like three hours. Whereas there are some three-hour movies I love that seem like ninety minutes because they’re written and directed well. Then I had the other two bagels with cream cheese for the evening food. And now, I just began the Ormandy Beethoven symphony cycle. I have tried three or four cycles – all fine but just no my cuppa, as you know. We’ll see if Mr. Ormandy changes my mind at all.

Today, I’ll be up when I’m up, I’ll do whatever needs doing, I’ll definitely go to the mail place to see what’s what, I’ll either have a nice salad from Stanley’s for food, or perhaps a turkey sandwich from the Beverly Glen Deli – it was quite good last week, and I could also have some matzo ball soup. We shall see. Otherwise, it will be a ME day and I’ll watch, listen, and relax.

Tomorrow is more of the same and there may be a food meeting tomorrow or Thursday night, then Friday we resume performances. I’ll go in early to tighten up one number and to make certain the light that was out is working – I’m told it is. Not sure if I’ll see the Saturday show, but Sunday we have another talkback and I’ll be there for that.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up when I’m up, do whatever needs doing, go to the mail place, have a salad or sandwich for food, have a ME day and watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: What do you think of my doctor visit and prognosis? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happy that there’s some improvement in the eye.
