YESTERDAZE

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I knew there would be a couple of days when I’d walk around in a daze and first of those daze days was yesterdaze. I was up early to finesse, print, Xerox, and deliver pages to muse Margaret – all 223 of them. That will probably take her a couple of days to read, so I’ll be anxiously awaiting her call and hope that she likes the pages. I also had the Xerox place print out a double-sided copy of the whole manuscript, which I had them spiral-bind. Then I came home and immediately went into my daze.

Then the piano tuner arrived and tuned the piano. At first he tried to tune the sofa until I reminded him he was a piano tuner first and foremost as well as foremost and first. He tuned for an hour, and then I went and picked up no packages from the mail place. I came back home and began to write more pages, until I realized that I was finished with the book, at which point I tried to tune the sofa.

I then answered e-mails that had piled up. Then I printed out some sheet music and made CDRs for the singers, who’ll all be coming today to pick them up. Then the New York singer arrived as did Lanny Meyers. We went off to have an early dinner and to discuss the song selection. We went to the Daily Grill – I had their side dish of mac and cheese and their small chopped salad. We went over lists, made some choices, then came back home.

She then sang through some stuff I didn’t know and after a while we finally had a list of seventeen songs, out of which we’ll probably do fifteen for the act, since there are a couple of longer medleys.

Then we worked on one of the medleys – they’d put it together in a rough form, but I didn’t love it, so we reworked all of it, added one song, and now it seems much better.

Then I worked on the arrangement of her second number. They were basically just doing it as written and I thought we should make it a little fresher so I had Lanny try the 4/4 song as a jazz waltz and that worked really well and felt right. I’m sure this particular song has been done at some point in waltz time.

After that, the singer and Lanny left and I immediately tried to tune the dining room table whilst standing there in a daze. I probably should have just sat on my couch like so much fish but I was in a daze and it didn’t occur to me. In fact, I can’t remember exactly what I did do. It’s lost in a haze of a maze of the daze.

I wasn’t going to read any of the book for a few days, but for fun I read the introduction and first chapter (the first fifty pages) and I was very happy with them. I caught some typos, saw some things that weren’t worded very well, saw a paragraph I could delete, and saw one little section where my point was obscured by bad writing. I fixed all of them – not on the computer, but just scribbled the fixes in the manuscript. When I’m all done, I’ll run the changes that aren’t miniscule by muse Margaret just to make sure she agrees, although I’m sure she will, and then I’ll enter all my little fixes, at which point the manuscript can then go to my two proofers.

I also talked to Grant Geissman, who designs these books, and he’s ready to work on it whenever the proofing is done. I think this one will be really fun for him, since his name appears in it many times. I have so many wonderful photos from those days, we may go to two photo sections. We shall see.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I must get some beauty sleep, which will hopefully get me out of the daze I’m in.

Today, I shall arise when I arise. Then throughout the day singers will pick up their CDRs and music. At some point I shall eat a quick luncheon and hopefully pick up packages, and then the New York singer and Lanny will arrive and we’ll work for four hours. Then I shall absolutely sit on my couch like so much fish and watch a motion picture on Blu and Ray, most likely Godzilla.

Tomorrow is another rehearsal, Thursday is another rehearsal, Friday is our first Kritzerland rehearsal and then I am having two ME days. I need them, I want them, and I shall have them.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, give singers music, eat, hopefully pick up packages, rehearse, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: What is the one thing you’ve never done that you would love to do? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland where I shall undoubtedly dream of yesterdaze.
