A FRIDAY KIND OF FRIDAY

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, it’s Friday, in fact, it’s a Friday kind of Friday. This week has flown by, like a gazelle in heat. We had a very fun rehearsal for Melody’s club act, which we’re doing again at the end of April. Of course, it was rough and we have some work to do, but they put in the new songs (save for two) so I could hear them in context. The first was something she’d sung and liked at some songwriter’s event. I think her father knew halfway through that it wasn’t working like they thought it would. And, bless her heart, Melody knew it, too, even though she really likes the song. I handled it gently and positively, saying that we could still work on the song and try it elsewhere, but that because it was a song that was show specific and role specific that it just didn’t work where it came in the structure of our show – the song that was there originally fulfills a very specific purpose, both emotionally and vocally and they saw that right away. The other new song worked perfectly as a replacement for a song she’s really too old to sing now. And I figured out a place for the third song, not a replacement but an addition – they weren’t sure it was going to work at all, but putting it where we’ll put it again fulfills a very specific function – it will follow the replacement song, because you can’t go from the replacement song to what was in the act before, you have to bridge with something else and the new song (a put-together we did in the Toonful Kritzerland show) will, I think, work really well as that bridge. After hearing the third replacement song, which happens at the very end of the act, I knew we have to find a good way into it (it will work fine) and find a good way out of it to end the act on a high note. And that leaves one song left – we want to add Tchaikowsky (And Other Russians) and probably an encore would work best, but we also have her other encore, which we don’t want to cut – so, we’ll play with the end and see what we come up with.

Prior to that, I’d had an okay night’s beauty sleep, after which I got up and answered e-mails, printed out a few orders, and began writing liner notes, but did not get far before I had to be on my way to get a haircut from Teddy. He cut the hair very short and it feels good to not have all that wild hair around me ears. Then I came back to the San Fernando Valley, picked up one package, got a six-inch Subway club to tide me over to dinner (only 320 calories) – I had flatbread for the first time and absolutely hated it. Then I came home, answered more e-mails, had a few telephonic calls, got good news about an upcoming Kritzerland project and then left for rehearsal.

After rehearsal, we all went to the Coral CafĂ© – disappointed they didn’t have the sweet potato pie for dessert, so I split some coconut cream pie, which I didn’t care for. I had a Caesar chicken wrap (very good), sweet potato fries (excellent), and we all had a very good time. I came home and wrote a little more of the liner notes, but couldn’t concentrate. I think I’ll just finish them in New York – easy to do, actually. Well, somehow, magically, my wireless Time Capsule router lost the connection to the Time Warner modem – I called, thinking it was the usual maintenance or outage, but it was indeed the router – we unplugged, and then it found the modem and all is well. Whew!

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I must get a good night’s beauty sleep.

Today, I shall hopefully arise after a good night’s beauty sleep. I’ll do some more writing, and then pack. Then I’ll hopefully pick up some packages and an important envelope, I’ll do some banking, then come home and relax. I’m going to try and get to sleep at ten, as I must be up at 4:45 in the morning to be on my way to the city that never sleeps, aka New York, New York.

Tomorrow, I shall be up very early and then I shall be on my way to the city that never sleeps, aka New York, New York. I may or may not see a show, and then I’ll sup at Joe Allen with whoever decides to show up. Sunday, we’re having a little brunch get-together, then I have a rehearsal with the East Coast singer. We also rehearse Monday morning, and then her show is that evening, and I shall be on my way home the next morning. I figure it’s never too soon to send excellent vibes and xylophones for a safe, secure, and on-time flight, as well as good weather coming and going.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, write, pack, hopefully pick up packages and an important envelope, bank, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Friday – what is currently in your CD player and your DVD/video player? I’ll start – CD, various Kritzerland things. Blu and Ray, nothing until my return. Your turn. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, after which I shall arise to greet a Saturday kind of Saturday.
