THE MAN WITH THE PORCELAIN CROWN

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, this week is flying by, like a gazelle with a porcelain crown. Speaking of a porcelain crown, I now have a brand spanking new porcelain crown thanks to Dr. Chew. It wasn’t too much of an ordeal – he wanted to give me some Novocain, but I didn’t want it, so we did without, which was fine as there was no pain whatsoever involved. He removed the temporary crown and then fitted the new porcelain crown, which took several tries as he filed it down a bit for a perfect fit. The whole thing took about forty-five minutes and I can now chew on both sides of Ye Olde Mouthe. I’ll be back a week from Thursday to begin the work on the second porcelain crown – that day will include the Novocain shot, the filing down of the tooth and the temporary crown. Then the day after I return from New York, I get the permanent porcelain crown and then I’ll be done with all this dentist stuff, hopefully for a good long time, save for teeth cleaning.

That was how the day began. After that, I was so excited about chewing on both sides of Ye Olde Mouthe, that I went directly to the Studio CafĂ© and had their yummilicious Yucatan Quesadilla – chorizo, eggs, onions, salsa, and guacamole – extremely yummilicious, although, amusingly, I still tended to chew on the opposite side of my mouth. I’m sure I’ll get used to chewing on the other side again, and once I get the temporary crown next week, I’ll then have no choice but to only chew on the other side.

After that, I picked up a couple of packages (the dealer in the UK whose package has never arrived, e-mailed me and said he’d tracked it and would have some information for me when it was delivered) – this leads me to believe there may be a couple of scenarios at play – the package wasn’t sent when he said it was. The package was incorrectly addressed and came back to him and has since been re-shipped. Or it’s been sitting somewhere undelivered and has been found. I told him it really has nothing to do with me anymore as I’ve already had my refund. I said that if it shows up I will then authorize ABE books to deduct the payment again.

I then came home and wrote the first draft of my liner notes for an upcoming release. That took a while, and then I proofed it, rewrote, futzed, and then sent it off to the designer. I also saw the designer’s proposed cover for said release and I liked it very much and approved it. By the time I finished all that, the day was done and done was the day, not necessarily in that order. I then sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I watched another Van Veeteren movie, this one even better than the first. Having now read the synopsis of the book this particular film was based on, it’s apparent that the screenwriters are taking many liberties in the adaptation, but it was still a really good yarn and wonderfully acted. Again, several Wallander and Dragon Tattoo actors were in the show. I then watched a motion picture on one of those DVD-R movie on demand things, entitled The House on Garibaldi Street, a TV movie from the 1970s about the capture of Adolph Eichmann in Brazil. It’s based on a true story, but the dialogue is frequently stilted and bad, but all the scenes featuring Topol as one of the people who found Eichmann, and Eichmann going on and on about how he was only doing what he was told, those scenes are very compelling thanks to some pretty terrific acting from Topol and the fellow who played Eichmann. The film was directed without much flair by Peter Collinson – it looks cheap and just like a TV movie. Still, a good story so I enjoyed it.

After that, I did some more work on the computer and that was that. Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I really need a good night’s beauty sleep.

Today, I have some errands and whatnot to do, some banking to do, some jogging to do, some eating to do, hopefully some packages to pick up, and then a long work session with Juliana Hansen, basically just listening to her sing through songs. That should take about two hours. Then I’m sure I’ll watch something.

Tomorrow, and the rest of the week it’s more of the above, figuring out the show order, writing another set of liner notes, prepping what is now going to be an announcement of two new CD releases. Hopefully doing it that way will actually increase orders, because sometimes people buy both and save on the shipping. I have lots of errands and whatnots, a few meetings, a birthday lunch to attend, maybe doing the Skip E. Lowe show, and other stuff.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, jog, do errands and whatnot, eat, do some banking, hopefully pick up some packages and have a work session. Today’s topic of discussion: What is your favorite period in history to read about? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland with my brand spanking new porcelain crown.
