IN THE ZONE

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I am, as they say, in the zone. Yes, you heard it here, dear readers, I, BK, am, as they say, in the zone. The reason I am in the zone is because last night I decided to take the bull by the horns and go to this spa kind of jernt across from Jerry’s Deli, where they have a one-hour foot rub for thirty dollars. First of all, do you know how hard it is to find a bull with some horns in the early evening in the City of Studio. Really hard. But I found the bull, I took it by the horns, and then next thing I know I was stretched out with my shoes and socks off and my feet in a wooden bucket of warm water. My nice Asian foot rub person began not on my feet but on my face, with a little facial massage, then a little scalp massage, then a little neck massage, then a little massage on the arms. Then she got to Ye Olde Feete and spent about forty minutes on them – it was a little bit o’ heaven, I have to say. I haven’t had a foot rub in months. She rubbed my two feet very well and I was, as they say, in the zone. After she’d had her way with the feet, she had me roll over on my stomach and she then did ten minutes on the back and legs, which was oh so very pleasant and a perfect capper to a relaxing visit. So, it’s not only a foot rub, it’s a foot rub and a mini-massage. As General MacArthur once said, “I shall return.”

Prior to being, as they say, in the zone, I’d had a very busy day where I thought I’d be having a very relaxing day. I did get nine hours of sleep, then got up, answered e-mails and continued writing the contextual commentary for the Kritzerland show. That took a little over three hours, but I finished it. I then wrote the blurb for our next release and got that all prepped. Then I finally went and had an omelet and two bagels, after which I picked up no mail and no packages. Then I came back home, listened to the first of the two scores on our new release and got those three audio samples to the web guy. We’re still waiting on the second score, which will hopefully arrive by noon today. I then listened to the raw tracks for an upcoming release and made some editing decisions on those. I then listened to the raw tracks for another upcoming release – the main score on that CD is very short, but what has been found is very interesting – the score was recorded two different ways – one with a very small group of musicians, and one with a slightly larger group – so, we’ll be able to give the listener both versions. I believe this release will make some people very happy. It will probably come along in late July or early August, as will the other one. After all that, I finally sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I watched the final two Wallander films, based on the Henning Mankell books, One Step Behind and The Pyramid. One Step Behind was very grim but very good, save for the fussy, artsy direction by the same fussy, artsy director as The Man Who Smiled. Thankfully, the final film had a different and better director who just told the story without calling attention to himself or his art. We got an interesting bit of backstory on Wallander and the event that really shaped him as a person and a policeman – it was a very compelling story with a satisfying conclusion. Interestingly, the novel of The Pyramid is dedicated to Rolf Lassgard, the actor who played Wallander in all the movies based on the books. I still give Krister Henriksson the edge, probably because he was my first Wallander, but Lassgard is great.

The massage came between the films. I love that the foot rub place is two minutes from the home environment and they’re open seven days a week from ten to ten.

Well, why don’t we all take our collective bulls by their collective horns and click on the Unseemly Button below so that I can finish these here notes and get a good night’s beauty sleep.

Today, I shall hopefully have a most relaxing day – I do have a few little things to do, but mostly I’m relaxing. Then at four-thirty I’m going to some salon thing where Adryan Russ and her sometimes collaborator, Joel Evans, are presenting a salon of their songs.

Tomorrow, I’ll be up at six to announce our new CD release, then I’ll probably go back to bed. Then we have our first Kritzerland rehearsal. The rest of the week will be consumed with meetings, meals, rehearsals (Kritzerland and the East Coast Singer), two East Coast Singer shows at the Gardenia, our stumble-through, sound check and show.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, have a most relaxing day, do a few things, eat, and attend a salon. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s free-for-all day, the day in which you dear readers get to make with the topics and we all get to post about them. So, let’s have loads of lovely topics and loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happily, as they say, in the zone.
