THE FLYING SPOONS

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, we have survived our second long day of tech, which began with a cue-to-cue that took about two hours.  Then we had an hour break, and then we began our run-through.  Everyone is tired, but it still had some wonderful things and some good energy.  I think the day off will be all sorts of help.  I gave some notes, and we did some clean up and that was that.

After rehearsal, I went directly to Ruth’s Chris to join Sami and her mom for Sami’s birthday dinner.  Our original plan was to go to Genghis Cohen, but rather amazingly it was closed for maintenance.  We all had a splendidly splendid time stuffing our faces with steak, salad, lobster mac-and-cheese, broccoli au gratin, potatoes lyonnaise, and their yummilicious bread and butter.  We also laughed throughout most of the meal and certainly after it.  I’ve been working with Sami since she was twelve – it’s hard to believe she’s fifteen.  I gave her a copy of the new song I wrote for the show we’re working on – she hasn’t heard the music but she loves the words, and believe me there are a LOT of them.  We did have entertainment at our table.  The Flying Spoons made a rare appearance.  I’m sure the other nearby diners thought we were out of our cotton-pickin’ minds. Here is a highlight of the act.

And here is the death-defying finish of the act, which is breathtaking.

The Flying Spoons are available for parties and other events.  They brought Sami some kind of chocolate molten lava cake thing.  It was a wonderfully wonderful evening and just what I needed.  After that, I came home, answered e-mails and am currently waiting for the helper to get here after her damn eight-day boat trip cruise thing.  I also got proofer three’s fixes, most of which were technical and most of which I did.  Just three little things to run by Muse Margaret.

Today, I hopefully will arise after a good night’s beauty sleep.  Once up, I have tons of stuff to do – we’re shipping out CDs, doing a Costco run, and making ready for the big night – The Robby Awards at the El Portal Theater.  We have about two hundred people coming, so that will be fun.  I’ll arrive at four o’clock to supervise the sound set up, where the piano is going, and how to arrange the stage.  At four-thirty sound check begins and goes to about six or six-thirty.  I’m not sure if the show begins at seven or seven-thirty.  I’m sure it will be a grandly entertaining evening.

Tomorrow, it’s back to work on Inside Out.  Sound will be there in the morning to get things wired, and then at noon-thirty we begin a dress cue-to-cue, as this show is extremely difficult in terms of quick changes – so we just want to iron out all those problems before we begin our dress rehearsal, which will also be our first time with the real musicians.  I’m sure it will be a bit daunting but we WILL get through it.  We should be through around five or so, maybe six.  Wednesday, some of us will be there during the day ironing out problems and making sure we’re absolutely ready for our final dress rehearsal at seven or so.  I’m sure there’ll be some clean up after.  I’ve decided to only give group notes at the end of the dress rehearsals – I’ll e-mail the personal notes to each of the cast members.  Thursday we have our first preview and performance with an audience.  We may get there early if there are things to work on and the same holds true for the Friday preview.  Then we open on Saturday night.  I do think it’s pretty hilarious that we seemed to be the first to announce when we were opening, and since that time about fifty other shows decided to also open on this weekend.  Sunday we have our first matinee, and one of our understudies will be on for that, so I’ll be there to make sure all goes according to Hoyle.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, prepare for the Robby Awards, ship CDs, and then attend the Robby Awards.  Today’s topic of discussion: The circus – when was your first time at the circus?  Did you like it?  Hate it?  And what of the big super-circuses – which have you seen and which was the most extraordinary?  Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, hoping that The Flying Spoons make an appearance at the Robby Awards.
