GOBBLE-GOBBLE

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, it is almost time to say “gobble-gobble” for tomorrow it will be Thanksgiving. Yes, tomorrow we shall say “gobble-gobble” but today we may only pre-gobble – we may not officially gobble. Yesterday I did no gobbling whatsoever. I did do a few errands, did some work around the home environment, picked up an early copy of the new Warners Buster Keaton set, and then supped at Schwab’s with our very own Grant Geissman. We then went to Amoeba where I purchased a CD that came out yesterday. And therein lies a tale: Monday, I happened to be in a used DVD and record store. I never do this, but I went through the jazz LP section, and found a couple of interesting-looking albums that I purchased inexpensively (including a jazz version of West Side Story I’d never seen – played by Bobby Darin’s musical director and produced by Darin on ATCO). But, the most interesting LP I saw was a jazz version of Guys and Dolls on the Coral label, played by Eddie Costa on vibes. The most interesting thing about it, however, was that on piano was my favorite jazz pianist, Bill Evans. The LP, unlike the ones I was buying, was marked at forty bucks. I thought about it, but the condition of the LP was pretty ratty and just wasn’t worth the dough. I figured I’d search it on eBay or see if I could find it cheaper (and in better condition) at another used record store. So, this morning I searched it on eBay and guess what – it came out on CD yesterday. Isn’t that funny? Sometimes the strangest things happen, don’t they? To which I can only say a hearty pre-gobble. That is the CD I purchased at Amoeba. I’ll let you know how it is in my Friday report. Isn’t that exciting? Isn’t that just too too?

Last night, I watched a motion picture on DVD that I’d never seen – Miss Lauren Bacall in The Fan. What a bad motion picture it was/is, and yet it is such fun in the way that truly wretched movies can occasionally be. La Bacall was actually very good, as was James Garner. My favorite parts were the rehearsals and performance of the “songs” in the musical Bacall was doing. If there are stupider songs please point me to them. These are divoonly stupid – written by Marvin Hamlisch and Tim Rice, not a marriage made in heaven. And the choreography by Arlene Philips outdid her usual awful work. It’s like Bob Fosse and MTV on bad acid. The director was a first-timer – one wonders how he got the assignment. Certainly it did nothing for his career, and he has only directed a handful of television since. But, it was nice to see a turkey, given the holiday we’re about to celebrate. And I give it one pre-gobble out of four.

What am I, Ebert and Roeper all of a sudden? Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below, whilst we pre-gobble to our heart’s content.

How many of you are pre-gobbling right this very minute? I, of course, am weary of the pre-gobbling and wish to “gobble-gobble” right now. But I will not jump the gun, gobble-gobble-wise.

Today I shall really eat lightly – I will force myself to be a good boy, food-wise, so that I can stuff myself silly on Thanksgiving. After that meal, I will be on a crash diet until my trip to New York, New York, so that I can be buff and toned with abs and buns of steel.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must cruise about in my motor car, I must mail some things, I must buy CDRs and envelopes, I must watch a DVD or three and I must do a spot of writing. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Ask BK Day, the day in which you dear readers get to ask me or any dear reader any question you like and we get to answer them in high fashion (stretch pants and a paisley shirt, with red flats). So, let’s have loads of lovely questions, and loads of lovely answers, along with loads of lovely postings, as we all merrily pre-gobble away.
