Can someone tell me whatever happened to Radio Shack?

Am I misremembering....or wasn't there a time when Radio Shack was the place to go to get things "inexpensively" that were way overpriced elsewhere....especially comparing Radio Shack brand to "brand names"?

At any rate, I've come to terms with having to wait...up to 8 days, for my HDMI cable to arrive (although I hope only GOOD things will happen).

The thing is, I'm getting my HD DVD player TODAY (I think).  And I won't be able to fully integrate it into my system without the HDMI cable.

So...I went out on a power walk this morning....1.5 miles to City Center Plaza where there is a Radio Shack.

And what do I find?  The in-house prices range from $49.99 to $119.95...."What brand would you prefer?", I was asked.

"The one I ordered online for $5.61", I replied.  "I'll be patient and wait for it!"

Radio Shack....feh!

Well, the only times I ever go to Radio Shack are to plug-adapters for my headphones, or a splitter for my phone.  However, even some of those items have been "prettied" up, and they're charging more for them.

As for cables - HMDIs, RCAs, 1/4-inchers, etc...  The pricing of those items has always bewildered me.  I remember when they used to be somewhat reasonably/understandably priced, but I think once the whole "high tech audio and video" market started to boom, then so did the prices for those cables.  A friend of mine, used to make his own, and he used to make some for me too.  I still have a couple of 20-foot 1/4-inch audio cables that he made - my cost (which was his cost) was only $1.75 per cable.  The same cable at an audio supply store: $24.95 - and that was for the "cheap brand".

But there are still a few cheaper-priced items at Radio Shack.  Alas, they're usually not ones that you want nor need.

*I've found that Target has audio and video accessories at decent prices.  (Most of them are from GE.)

Dakota - are you watching out for the weather? There is a tornedo warning block over your area.

So... There's a small, round piece of meat heading her way? Oh, wait, that's a tournedo.  I think you may have meant a tornado.

Well, the lease has yet to be signed but things are looking better.  As to DR MBarnum's invasion, I mean visit, I need drugs, heavy meds, not sleep.

Is the stage version the same as the movie version... I did not mind some of the music but I did not care for some of it. Olivia was not that bad but I did not care for the male singer and his name escapes me at the moment.

My favorite song from the movie version is "Have to believe in Magic"

The stage version is basically inspired by the movie, for lack of a better word.  It's sort of its own entity.  If you check Playbill.com - and other theatre sites - there have been plenty of interviews and features with the director and creative team.

I love this!  I've added it to my work e-mail signature. ;D

Gene Kelly was good in the movie. He is not too bad of a clarinetist.  I did like the track where they had the 1940s flashback.

Well, the guy who played clarinet on the soundtrack was not a bad clarinetist.  Alas, Gene Kelly was a good faker, not a great one, but a good one.  -At least when it came to pretending to play the clarinet.

PS There are now two teasers (that I have seen) now running for the new Closer season - one I like very much, one I dislike very much! Were they both done by the same person/team?

Can you describe them? There should be more than two running...

UPS leaves everything in my neighborhood without a signature, UNLESS the shipper has specified that the package MUST be signed for.  Very convenient!  :)

Same here in my 'hood in NYC.  -That's if s/he gets buzzed in the front door.  However, I believe the main motivation for leaving the packages has more to do with not wanting to put the package back on the track, and having to attempt to re-deliver it the next day than being "convenient for the customer".

*However, our regular UPS guy, happens to know me by first initial and last name since my room is on the ground floor, and I'm usually the one who's home to sign for packages.

DR FJL - the DC segment of this trip is business for me (Saturday and Sunday are full conference days - oy).  Much of the socializing will be visits with librarian friends from Illinois, Iowa, and California who I only get to see at these national conferences.  One of our evenings, we'll be having dinner with our friends Doug & Jon, who live in NYC, but will be at the conference with Jon's work.  They'll be on vacation by the time DH Richard and I get to New York.

Thanks for the tip about the Signature production, though.  I'll keep it in my notes, in case a window opens up.  We're staying in Arlington (Crystal City), but I have no idea how close we'll be to that theatre.

If you're in Crystal City, you're just one exit away from Signature via I-95.  Alas, Signature is not subway accessible, so a cab would be your most convenient way to get there.

I've eaten my meal of three cookies - satisfies me until after the show and gives me a sugar rush.  After the performance, the author is having a little party for us at Mel's Diner.

Call me Sleezy Farkledoodle!

Quote
A. Follow the instructions to find your new name.

B. Once you have your new name, put it in the
subject box and forward it to friends and family and co-workers.

Don't forget to forward it back to the person who sent it to you, so they
know you participated.

And don't go all adult - a senior manager is now known far and wide as Dorky
Gizzardsniffer!

The following is excerpted from a children's book, Captain Underpants And
the Perilous Plot Professor Poopypants, by Dave Pilkey , in which the evil
Professor forces everyone to assume new names...

So:-

1. Use the third letter of your first name to determine your New first name:
a = snickle
b = doombah
c = goober
d = cheesey
e = crusty
f = greasy
g = dumbo
h = farcus
i = dorky
j = doofus
k = funky
l = boobie
m = sleezy
n = sloopy
o = fluffy
p = stinky
q = slimy
r = dorfus
s = snooty
t = tootsie
u = dipsy
v = sneezy
w = liver
x = skippy
y = dinky
z = zippy

2. Use the second letter of your last name to determine the first half of
your new last name:
a = dippin
b = feather
c = batty
d = burger
e = chicken
f = barffy
g = lizard
h = waffle
i = farkle
j = monkey
k = flippin
l = fricken
m = bubble
n = rhino
o = potty
p = hamster
q = buckle
r = gizzard
s = lickin
t = snickle
u = chuckle
v = pickle
w = hubble
x =
dingle
y = gorilla
z = girdle

3. Use the third letter of your last name to determine the second half of
your new last name:
a = butt
b = boob
c = face
d = nose
e = hump
f = breath
g = pants
h = shorts
i = lips
j = honker
k = head
l = tush
m = chunks
n = dunkin
o = brains
p = biscuits
q = toes
r = doodle
s = fanny
t = sniffer
u = sprinkles
v = frack
w = squirt
x = humperdinck
y = hiney
z = juice

Thus, for example, George W. Bush 's new name is: Fluffy Chucklefanny.

Now when you SEND THIS ON...use your new nam e as the subject.

And remember that children laugh an average of 146 times a day; adults laugh
an average of 4 times a day. Put more laughter in your
day!!

I am staying home from work today because I didn't feel very good yesterday...I think that is called a delayed reaction!  :D

And just how many Bollywood movies have you received in the mail recently?  I bet there's some correlation there.

Can you describe them? There should be more than two running...

The one I really like is reasonably paced and has a snippet where Brenda answers a comment about ruining a wedding with a smart quip.

The other is a quick cut and paste job that moves so fast it's hard to focus on any particular image - I'll try and pay more attention.
