DR singdaw - Thanks for making the trek into Manhattan today to join DRs FJL, elmore and myself for a few hours today.  It was great seeing you again, and I'm glad you finally got to make the acquaintance of Fred and Larry.  Now, we just have to, hopefully, get you back at the end of June to meet some more of the gang.

I take it that this is NOT the recent West Coast production with Jason Graae and the dashing Mr. Gilfrey?

Bingo! That was THE MERRY WIDOW.

Things that have happened lately:

Two of the precious children came to fisticuffs and one of them spat on me while I was trying to hold him down.

Dominick got a nosebleed the day of the preschool graduation. He was very proud of it.

I invented a new recipe. Leftover Phyllis Surprise. Which of course can only be made once a year.

I am writing things on the bathroom wall before the tile guy comes to cover it up. My masterpiece will be there forever and always.

My mother is brushing Joshie. He is loving it.

Just to clarify, I was not holding him down so the other kid could hit him. I was trying to keep him in Time Out.

From

der Brucer

There are lots of these for sale at the Virgin Megastore in Times Square.  I think they're priced at $12.99, but I have a feeling they'll be marked down a few bucks in the near future.  -They're right by the register where all the other marked down merchandise is.

Besides Mr. T., there is also a Pope one, Elvis and a few other characters I can't remember right now.

DR singdaw - You almost ended up with one of those too. ;)

Back from dinner and got the news about Charles.  He was a very sweet man, and always very nice to me.  I used him on A Broadway Christmas, and it was his idea to sing the girl's part of Baby, It's Cold Outside and it was a hoot with Karen Morrow singing the boy's part.

I used to run into him at Musso and Frank quite often, and last time I went to his house (about four years ago) I met his lover, who, as it turned out, designed the set for my play, The Good One.

He wasn't doing too well these last few years - wherever he's gone to, I know he'll be making them laugh.

Preschool graduation sounds totally absurd to this ex-teacher. Grade School graduation is much the same.

I've been watching TV for almost 10 hours!  The Indy 500 festivities began at noon, they raced for 113 laps, had a 2+hour rain delay (during which I read, puttered, and napped), and on the restart Mr. Ashley Judd (Dario Franchitti) was in the lead when rain ended the race for good.  So he's the winner.

I fixed a snack supper for DH Richard and DS Rob and myself and we watched the National Memorial Day Concert from Washington, DC.  It was very moving and emotional.

Sorry to hear about Mr. Reilly.

I have a question; kind of a Ask Free For All Day Question Day:

Are there currently three versions of CABARET's libretto and score available for production?  I was only aware of the original 60's version and the 1998 revival.  Last night, I saw a production that included "Maybe This Time" and "The Money Song" (actually both of "Money Songs"), but that also include "Why Should I Wake Up?" and "Meeskite," both of which I thought had been cut from the revival.  I was confused which version I was seeing.

As DR MattH mentioned, the only two legal versions are the original and the 1998 revival.  However, many people do incorporate some of the movie songs (which were in the Sam Mendes/Rob Marshall version) legally or not so legally.

The production I did last fall at Arena Stage was basically the 1988 version.  However, we did cut "Meeskite"  - although it would have been "fun" to hear Walter Charles sing it - but "Mein Herr", "Maybe This Time" and "Money" were interpolated.  -Although, having "Don't Tell Mama" and "Mein Herr" back to back was a bit redundant to me.  -"Don't Tell Mama" was replaced by "Mein Herr" as Sally's first number in the movie.

We secured permission for the additional songs through Mr. Kander himself.  And since he was busy with getting Curtains open in L.A., we actually did not get the official word until our last week in the rehearsal hall.

The "funny" thing is is if you license the 1988 version, the rental packet is basically the original version with an appendix including "Money", "Don't Go", and "I Don't Care Much".  So...

Does anyone still do "The Telephone Song"?

And I don't think I've ever seen a production of Cabaret that's included "Don't Go"?

What say you?

I joined Jose and singdaw for a train trip up to 72nd Street, we sat in the park where I had a fruit beverage and fruit-type snack from Levains, eating light because Skip and I are having a big dinner around 7.  That's my story and I'm sticking with it.

Yes, grapes do fall in the Fruit Group.  ;)

"The Telephone Song" was in last night's production (more confusion), but "I Don't Care Much" was not included.

This reminds me of a conversation that I overheard at work.

"Hey, Gina, how was the shower?"

"It was refreshing."

"Did you play any games?"

"We did the Diaper Game."

And as DR singdaw and I were walking up Broadway on the way to meet DR elmroe...

Girlfriend: Oh, look! Zabar's!

Boyfriend: Do you want to go in?

Girlfriend: Sure, why not.

Boyfriend: What kind of store is it?

Girlfriend: It's a grocery store.

Boyfriend: Like Albertson's?

Girlfriend:  Yeah.  Just Jewish.

I also thought last night's version (the 1998?) had a weaker ending than the original version; that included the reprise of "Velkommen."  I found last night's version very confusing and rather lifeless.

Ah, there have been two revivals:
