The library detail went well on Tuesday. It was a quiet day and I ended up using Remote Desktop to do some of my regular work since there were not a lot of patrons needing assistance.

And now, farewell. I must wash the bowl and the coffee cup.

Anthony is playing designer today. An older gentleman who lives in our building has enlisted his help to purchase and install new window shades. They are doing it in the late morning. I shall come home for lunch to an empty apartment.

Later, friends.

Morning all!

I may not post tonight because I am going to a meeting regarding out bus route that they are trying to discontinue.  Idiots.  I keep saying instead of calling themselves HART LINE (Hillsborough Area Regional Transit) they should change it the FLORIDA Area Regional Transit therefore making them FART LINE because their service stinks!

If you don't have a car in Eastern Hillsbourgh County, your stuck because we have NO mass transport.

Scary about that murder, Cilla.  Just glad you are alright.  I slept right though the big tree next door falling a couple months back.  They said it made a horrible crack noise.  I've always said that you could shoot a canon off and I wouldn't hear it if I'm sleeping.

Vibes and prayers to all who need them today.

Good morning, all! Last night I had several dreams, one of them a recurring dream about investigating with two others a "haunted" apartment with all sorts of terrifying and unsettling things going on. The one before that was something about being lost in a very elegant museum with lots of gilt and marble. My lady apartment ghost also put in an appearance last night around 4:30. Otherwise, I think I slept well.

This morning I will try to make my barber appointment at 9:30, then head down to the McGlinnventory. Following that, I'll come back here for some work and around 2:30 head to my appointment on the East Side fore an appointment concerning a colonoscopy. That's my day.

Has anybody noticed that Blu-ray releases of new titles are being priced less than their DVD counterparts?

The recent SHERLOCK HOLMES movie with Robert Downey, Jr. is $2.00 less on Blu-ray than it is on DVD.

I'm wondering if this new pricing is the studio's way to move customers out of DVD altogether and into Blu-ray.

We watched LOVE NEVER DIES last night, the sequel to PHANTOM OF THE OPERA.

We liked some of the songs, the performers were good and the staging spectacular.

What we didn't like was the fact that this was a sequel, because the book "betrayed" all of the characters that had been established in the first play.  A sequel should be a continuation of the previous story, not a rethinking of it.

Has anybody else seen this?

I believe it's better called a continuation of the story.  Character's/People can change 10 years on and take on different characterizations.  I'm not trying to defend the material, just shedding a different light.  The story is weak, but for what it is, I thought it the music was good and the staging was cool.

Greetings from Toyland. I can only wish that the fools who run the MTA needed public transportation instead of driving their wealthy asses in private cars: I needed a No 3 bus today; according to the inaccurate schedules posted at bus stops, the No 3 was due around 10:08 and another at  10:17, I waited for nearly 25 minutes before one showed up at 10:25. I am not happy about this.

Well, there's a whole cottage industry of sequels to "Pride and Prejudice" and every Austen novel out there. I, too, wish people would leave the continuations of stories to people's imaginations in most cases. That said, I love some sequels, especially in actions movies like "Road Warrior" and "Terminator."

Well we had excitement in the Box Office and Lobby at PCPH last night.

Our local Senior organization RSVP provides two ushers for each performance....they get complimentary tickets to the evening's performance - they take the tickets, tear them in half, keep one half, return the other....and also hand out programs.  Last night we had a NEW lady, Nellie.  It was her first time ushering, so I took her through the process.  HOWEVER, her friend, Dorothy, who is an experienced usher decided NOT to show up...so Nellie was on her own.

We had TWO busloads of out of towners.  One bus from the Masonic Home in Franklin, Indiana, had about 30 - and some of the people had been here before.  The other bus was from Peoria, Illinois, and had about 57 people on it - making their first visit.

WELL - the Peoria group had paid for but not picked up their tickets.....they started pouring into our small lobby....and creating quite a bottleneck.  I left the box office and asked who was in charge of handing out the tickets.....and a couple of the ladies just said:  "We don't have our tickets yet."

Well - I figured there might have been a method to the madness, so I went out to the bus.  There were a couple of people helping people out of the bus, so I approached them and asked: "Who is in charge of handing out the tickets."  And a lady replied again: "We don't have our tickets yet...."   So I said...."No, that's not what I asked.  Who would hand out the tickets."  Another lady stepped up and said;  "Me....I would."  So I handed her the tickets, thinking if they had their tickets before any more of them got into the lobby, it would be helpful.

I started to walk away when a tall man stopped me.  He had on a badge that said Convention...something...and the name Leroy.  "What is your name?" he asked.  "I said 'Jack'", and put out my hand which he took.  "No....your whole name...."  And then he grabbed my name tag to read it.  "I don't like the tone you took with her.....you are very rude.  I know people and I will make sure they KNOW ABOUT YOU."  I took my hand back like I was snake bit and walked away.  It's a good thing for Leroy that  I had the restraining spirit on me.

ANYWAY....I went back to the lobby where the lady was having difficulty handing out tickets, so I asked her if she wanted me to help and she said YES.....  So I took several of them and asked the Peoria group to raise their hands if they needed tickets, and got them ALL passed out - and the people into the theatre in about six minutes....   OF course new usher Nellie was beside herself trying to keep up.....but she was a trouper.

I never saw Leroy again......but I had gone to the Box Office and got the ticket for the WORST seat in the house for him....if he came in the get one.....

Found out from President Michael....that he was with the organization that had asked for COMP tickets.....and a few other things...

ANYWAY....it has been my experience that people who "know people" never say they "know people".....I "know people" but I never say it....

END OF STORY....so far.  I can't wait to read the letter someone sends or forwards to us.

Oh except that the bus driver and the lady in charge both said to me: " We've been with these people all day....NEVER AGAIN...."

For better or worse, I haven't had any interest in LOVE NEVER DIES.

That's two of us. I've never understood making the monstrous horror of the murderous Phantom into a tragic hero, either. Sure wasn't Gaston Leroux's intention. And, just like sequels to GONE WITH THE WIND, A DOLL'S HOUSE, frankly, my dear, who gives a damn?

Not to mention a remake of GONE WITH THE WIND.

Ahhh, working with the public!

My favorite entry in the book was a picture of woman, a national president of the PTA IIRC, standing next to a street light, whose support she had her hand on.  The caption said, "Mrs. So and So, one of only two women to hold a similar post in the country."

It says in the story that there was only 1 eligible nominee for Best Actress in a Musical that year so they decided not to give the award and "The nominating committee Monday declined to give nominations in the leading actor in a musical and choreography categories because they did not consider any of the performances or choreography outstanding or excellent."

Years ago there was a laugh out loud series of corrections in the Oregonian that went on for DAYS about the grave of Chief Joseph.  They kept correcting various items, probably 8-10 times over a week or two, until the last correction finally stated that the original article had been in error and Chief Joseph wasn't the actual body buried in the grave.  I wish I would have saved them--Betsy and were holding our sides from laughing so hard.

As I look at the shows that year, most of them did not have a "leading actress" although Mary Beth Piel was nominated as best featured actress in a revival of The King and I (why featured, perhaps she was the one eligible and since they cancelled it that year they must have moved her to featured). Most of the musicals were ensemble pieces or shows with featured roles (Quilters, Big River, Grind).

I liked elements of "Grind" and "Big River" both. Leilani Jones was one of the things I liked and was glad she got a Tony for her efforts.

Choreography on "Grind" was OK, but Larry Fuller (with Bob Fosse supposedly coming in to restage Ben Vereen's numbers) could have done better.

But not to make a big deal of it, but these days, there is no way they would have  just voted no nominations for choreography if the field were

BIG RIVER,
GRIND,
LEADER OF THE PACK.

Far far far (that's three fars) lesser choreography has been nominated over the years since then.

And far lesser performances have been nominated as well.

In 1985 the Tonys were still (even thought they were on national television) a smaller show. They were still done in the Broadway theatres (this is before the move to Radio City) and I don't know if the Road Producers were the big influence that they are now. They could get away with things that wouldn't fly now.

I don't remember about that specifically but the 1995 Tonys had Sunset Blvd up against just one one other nominee, Smokey Joe's Cafe and there were only two nominees for Best Actress in a Musical, Ms. Close and Ms. Luker in Hal Prince's production of Show Boat.

No wonder there were in effect no reasonable qualified 1985 eligible nominees for best Lead Actor and Actress with examples like

Anna in THE KING AND I and

Jim and Huck in BIG RIVER

relegated to Featured Acting categories as a mindset.

You might be thinking of the ruckus raised when Contact won for Best Musical at the 2000 Tonys. Many people did not consider that a "Broadway Musical" and were upset that it won. The other nominees that year were James Joyce's The Dead, Swing and Michael John LaChiusa's Wild Party.

Billing does (or did) have something to do with it. The Tony committee meets during the year to discuss those kinds of issues.

My late friend, Michael, was the first actor I did the show SLEUTH with, back in 1975.  That year the Committee wanted to honor both of us, but didn't want get in the habit of having ties in the voting (the winners' statues were expensive back then).  So they gave me the Best Actor Award and gave Michael Best Supporting Actor.  Until the day he died, alll you had to do was mention that decision to him, and he would blow-up all over again.

I thought it would be funny for Bono to try to explain the name above / name below the title situation to the cast of SPIDER-MAN, but of course it became moot when no one in SPIDER-MAN was nominated.

tune of IN THE NAME OF LOVE

(probably only makes sense if you know the U2 song)

Leading roles are the names above
Featured are below
Unless producers can justify
Upsetting the status quo

It’s the names above
The leads are the names above
Yeah the names above
That’s all, yeah, the names above

Above the title is contractual
No more than words on a page
Bears no resemblance to actual
Time spent up there on the stage

It’s the names above
The leads are the names above
Yeah the names above
That’s all, yeah, the names above

(It would have been hilarious)

For better or worse, I haven't had any interest in LOVE NEVER DIES.

That's two of us. I've never understood making the monstrous horror of the murderous Phantom into a tragic hero, either. Sure wasn't Gaston Leroux's intention. And, just like sequels to GONE WITH THE WIND, A DOLL'S HOUSE, frankly, my dear, who gives a damn?

"Hello, I'm Dimitri Weissman.  And since there have been a number of lawsuits temporarily delaying this theater from being torn down, welcome to our second annual reunion..."

Songs from FOLLIES II

I'm REALLY still here

Guess i couldn't leave you

Yet another morning

Lord, lord, lord, that woman's still me

You're gonna love the day after tomorrow

Broadway old lady
Not to mention:

One More Tongue

Ahhh, Des Moines

Listen to the Hail on the Roof

In Buddy's Sighs

The Highway You Didn't Take

Fred, I think that you need to talk to Sondheim and get this show written!! :D

But the title would need to change to Follies a Deux.

The story of one of my previous boss' life, SLOTH, should be coming out shortly.

It's all about billing. Name above the title or below. As a matter of fact, you don't have to sing.

Yeah, it's about billing. As FJL mentioned earlier, William Daniels was listed below the title for "1776," so he was nominated as a featured actor, an honor he declined.

It used to be fairly inflexible, but the nominating committee now decides those things for most shows.

Doug Henning didn't sing, but he was nominated for "The Magic Show."

Flight was fine, traffic not too bad coming into the city, and I'm in my hotel, once again upgraded to a premium room although not quite as premium as the last premium room.  This one's very large, too, but the other one had two bathrooms and was even larger.  But I'm VERY happy here.  Now I'll go out and buy some toiletries.  It took me forever to get on the hotel's network - I kept entering the password exactly as it appears on the little card they give you - all CAPS.  I finally called down only to be told it was all lower case.  I suggested they might want to therefore put it in lowercase on the card.

The producers can petition the committee to change an actor's eligibility.  Joel Grey was billed over the title for Chicago but Amos is definitely a featured role.  If I remember correctly (IIRC, in Internet lingo), he didn't get the featured actor nomination because the producers forgot to ask the nominating committee to consider him for the featured actor Tony. :-\

DR JRand61, what a horror story! When DR Ginny was in LOOK HOMEWARD, ANGEL, we had a nursing home audience for the dress rehearsal. About 10:45, just before the Big Final Scene, they started dragging the old folks back to the bus. One old man fell, so during the Big Final Scene, we all had to listen to cries of "Help Me! Pineapple Sausage
(to the tune of Annette Funicello’s “Pineapple Princess”)

Pineapple sausage, I bought some pineapple sausage today
As I went about my shopping with my list down Costco way
Pineapple sausage, I love you, you’re the sweetest thing I’ve seen
I’ll eat you up for dinner and you’ll end up in my spleen.

I saw a girl down the Costco aisle
With a frying pan and a great big smile
I got in line just to see what’s up
She handed me a sample in a cup

Pineapple sausage, I bought some pineapple sausage today
As I went about my shopping with my list down Costco way
Pineapple sausage, I love you, you’re the sweetest thing I’ve seen
I’ll eat you up for dinner and you’ll end up in my spleen.

I took the cup and I walked away
The sweet smell of the sausage I began to crave
I grasped the toothpick and I picked it up
I took a bite and then began to sup

Pineapple sausage, I bought some pineapple sausage today
As I went about my shopping with my list down Costco way
Pineapple sausage, I love you, you’re the sweetest thing I’ve seen
I’ll eat you up for dinner and you’ll end up in my spleen.

I closed my eyes and I took a bite
It then was clear to me that my thoughts were right
I turned around and what did I see?
A package of those sausages for me!!

LOL!

It's a great story, but I wonder how true it is.   Liza Minnelli has told on Judy for embellishing the truth on her trips to Jack Paar's show.  Especially noted was Judy's tale about Bolger/Haley/Lahr squeezing her out and making her dance down the yellow brick road behind them.  She claimed Victor Fleming yelled at them: "You three dirty hams! Let that little girl in there!"  Liza plus half-siblings Lorna and Joey Luft all agreed it was a tale and not true.

DR JRand and I will be in NYC next year, for sure. JRand is getting his social security and footing the  bill, I believe he said...or I might be wrong.

Is there a big HHW shindig in New York next year?

If it means you will come to New York, yes.

The library detail went well on Tuesday. It was a quiet day and I ended up using Remote Desktop to do some of my regular work since there were not a lot of patrons needing assistance.

I'm glad it went well.

Trust me, once I am out of this chair, I will be there.  Well, New York is such a walking town, I will have to get my stamina built up first.

DR CILLA LIZ - whew!  Shocking!!  Thanks for the link to the story with the details!

DR JMK - stitch me one of them samplers, please.
CillaLiz, that was a horrific story. I  think I'd prefer to sleep through it.

So would I.  I was happy enough to sleep through the house burning down next door (in Michigan).  We weren't happy that the, then, youngish boys did not wake us.

Forgive my ignorance, but what purpose is there for the i-pad?   I mean, it isn't a phone and it isn't a laptop, is it?

Keith loves his iPad and so do I.  He connects to the internet, reads books & articles, takes photos with it, emails and I don't know what else.

Heeeeelp Meeee!"  Makes you believe in euthanasia.

They should not have been walking the people out while the lights were still turned down.  Someone didn't plan the outing very well.

RE: LOVE NEVER DIES

Reading the storyline and what happens at the end sequal contradicts what happens at the begiinging of the original  musical. I saw leave enough alone.

DR Mike, that's a good point.  I hadn't thought about it that way.

I procrastinated on my first, and was happy and relieved to pass with flying colors.  That kind of thing hasn't run in my family, but it doesn't really matter.  Cheap insurance.  Back again in two years.

Well, this is pretty darned cool...Follies Tony Nominee Jayne Houdyshell Records Solo Version of "Broadway Baby," Now Available (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/167073-Follies-Tony-Nominee-Jayne-Houdyshell-Records-Solo-Version-of-Broadway-Baby-Now-Available)!

Quote
Jayne Houdyshell, who received a 2012 Tony nomination for her performance as Hattie in the recent Broadway revival of Follies, has recorded a solo version of her show-stopping "Broadway Baby."

According to a posting on the website of PS Classics, the label that released the cast recording of the award-winning revival, "The Metropolitan Museum of Art recently asked if they could include 'Broadway Baby' on a compilation CD they were doing, of songs from musicals set in New York City. We of course said yes, but we also felt the track might be more appropriate on a compilation disc as a Hattie solo, without Solange and the Whitmans mysteriously returning at the end. So the wonderful Jayne Houdyshell went back into the studio last month and recorded a new ending, and as a gift to our customers, we thought we'd make the solo track available here."

Not that I know of. I know Priscilla is coming to town at some point but unless you all want to come to New York in 2013 to celebrate my 60th birthday, there is nothing planned that I know of.

At some point is about right.. still no idea when that will be

I picked up my Mom at 12:30 and we went to a favorite deli/meat market for lunch and some shopping.  We swung back by her apartment and I put her purchases in her refrigerator.  Then went to the post office for me to buy stamps and to our house to put my deli purchases in our refrigerator.  It was still a bit too early to go to her doctor's appointment, so we took a little drive around town.  She was pleased with the time her new doctor took with her and will go to our local hospital next week for some follow-up tests.  She bought me a tank of gas and I took her home.

Hi folks,

It's late and I must to bed but wanted to let you know that the meeting didn't go to good.  I lost my temper and gave the FART err HART rep a good piece of my mind.  I guess I should have told him that I know people.  :)

I am planning on writing the local reporter who helped me with the house and her photographer.  It wouldn't hurt to get some media coverage.

Back from a very interesting and intriguing dinner meeting.  The food at Angus McIndoe is great - I had a cajun seafood pot pie - really yummilicious and not too much food, and a teeny-tiny side of mac and cheese that was great.  For dessert a little bread pudding.  It will be interesting and intriguing to see what comes of this meeting.

The bacon was very crispy, by the way, or it could have been really disgusting
