TOD:

I have luckily managed to meet quite a number of celebrities over the last 15 years.

Laurie Mitchell (ATTACK OF THE PUPPET PEOPLE, QUEEN OF OUTER SPACE, RUNAWAY GIRL) is likely one of my top favorites. I had no idea that when I telephoned her several years back that we would become such dear chums. She is funny and delightful and so much fun to gossip with! I adore her and consider her one of my greatest friends. Can't wait to see her in another week!

Kenny Miller (ATTACK OF THE PUPPET PEOPLE, I WAS A TEENAGE WEREWOLF, SENIOR PROM). Another truly wonderful person who is very dear to me...we will even be roomies next weekend in Burbank as he will be staying with my at the Marriott.

Scotty Morrow (THE COSMIC MAN, PEYTON PLACE) has also become a very good buddy.

Other favorite celeb meetings were Tom Wopat, Edith Fellows, Kathleen Hughes, Rex Reason, Rhodes Reason, Peter Lupus, of gosh there have been so many that I was very excited about meeting, and truly enjoyed getting to know.

And of course, as mentioned by Vixmom, lots of fantastic HHW celebs, also! All of whom are very important and dear to me!

Just finished watching the 1961 Bollywood movie SON OF INDIA.

I had always read that this film was terrible, the reviews certainly were not kind, but I rather enjoyed it, despite the fact that the DVD copy I was watching was missing a lot of footage...scenes would suddenly end or start mid-scene. It was beautifully filmed in color and cinemascope, which is quite unusual for an Indian film of that era, especially one with no "big" stars in it.

The kid in the film, played by Sajid Khan, did grow up to be a pretty big star when he was cast in the US tv series MAYA with Jay North. Quite a good little actor.

Tomorrow I have a visit from someone from Comcast cable. I bought a new DVD/VHS recorder and have had no luck in figuring out how to hook it up to my DVR box so that I can record things onto DVD.

I hooked it up as my old DVD/VHS machine was hooked up and as the instruction booklet suggested, but nada.

There are 50 million cables and it all drives me crazy, so I finally called Comcast. The told me that different machines might need to be hooked up differently. Hopefully the technician will be able to figure it out. I also hope the technician is the same cable guy that I am friendly with, because that would be nice. He works on Sundays.

DR MBarnum - When I tried to do the same thing with my Time-Warner Cable/DVR box a few years ago, I discovered that my box did not have "live" auxiliary Video and Audio Outs. If you can look up your specific model online, you might be able to track down a solution - or answer - on your own.

I was a little tired late this morning  and took a nap and I woke from a very strange dream.

It was a "Little House On the Prairie" type setting. The main character was twentyish bitter Liberian. The dream was populate with people I've never seen before except my dream had a "Very Special Guest Star" Buffy St. Marie. She played a character who comes to town as the (unnamed) state first Native American politician. She meets the Liberian and it turns out that she is White Buffalo Calf Woman.*

White Buffalo Calf Woma takes the Liberian on a spiritual journey and she is able to find peace and love within herself. She wakes up and is alone in the library thinking it might be a dream. The woman in her Politician guise comes to say goodbye  to the Liberian and she has a cathartic moment and cries. (Emmy type crying)

Liberian alone goes back to her counter and knocks over some books. One book falls to floor and it is a book about White Buffalo Calf Woman with a picture very special guest star Buffy St Marie on the cover. Something startles her and she wakes up in modern times in a library picking up the same book off the floor.

Did she dream it or did she embark on a spiritual journey. (Roll end credits)

* For those that may not know who White Buffalo Calf Woman is; she is a sacred woman of supernatural origin, is treated as a prophet or a messiah and is central to the Lakota religion. (So I guess the dream had to take place in one of the Dakotas or Minnesota
I thought only Elmore was entitled to such dreams.

TOD: I have been blessed to have interviewed a number of celebrities over the years. Cloris Leachman stands out as the funniest and possibly the filthiest. But I think the three that meant the most to me were Lena Horne, Harold Nicholas of the Nicholas Brothers and Bobby Short.

I did not know you had done such things, DR John! Where these food involved interviews?
I covered theater and a lot of the arts in college and for about a decade or so afterward. I Interviewed Cloris Leachman when she was doing her Grandma Moses show. I met Lena Horne on tour with her one-woman show. Harold Nicholas played the role of the grandfather in "The Tap Dance Kid" national tour with Dule Hill of "The West Wing" as the boy. And Bobby Short did a couple of shows in Albany when I was living up in Catskill.

A few other faves to interview over the years were Lily Tomlin, Rosemary Clooney, Charles Strouse, Lillian Gish and Pat Carroll, plus a string of writers such as Terry McMillan, Michael Connelly, and James W. Hall (and a ton of mystery writers like him that live in Florida).

Hit the barbecue trail today. It seems every few feed I'd find another great barbecue joint. Brisket, sausage, ribs, chicken, you name it.

I love work like that.

Good Evening!

Good matinee.

Now some web-surfing.

Then a bite to eat.

And maybe even a cat nap before tonight's show.

Cowboys & Turbans

As for the Topic of the Day...

The one celebrity I've met who still makes me nervous each time I re-meet him: Stephen Sondheim
-And I still remember the one rehearsal of Sweeney Todd at The Kennedy Center I had to play with him sitting five feet from me. "Excited and scared!!!!!!!!!!!" However, my "fears" were eased when I asked him about a particular chord in "The Letter". There was a discrepancy between the manuscript score and the published score. I asked him which one was correct. His answer: "I don't know." :)

The one surprise celebrity - well, celebrities - meeting: Mel Brooks and Carl Reiner at What If?

I've also been very fortunate to play for various celebrities at auditions.

Paul Newman didn't make your list? or Stephen Schwartz?

Oh... Well...

Paul Newman merely visited us once or twice in the green room at Westport, mainly to drop off more cookies and salad dressing. ;) -However, his wife was there a bit more.

-And I guess I should have included Eartha Kitt then too.

As for Mr. Schwartz, well... I have worked with his son, Scott... ('nuff said). And the one time I had the opportunity to spend some quality time with "pére" Schwartz, I was practically deathly sick, so I wasn't able to hang out with him.

T.O.D.

I have been very fortunate in meeting a great many famous people in my lifetime....

Bruce Kimmel, Ray Bolger, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Ed McMahon, Mark Linn-Baker, Loni Anderson, Peter Nero, Sandy Duncan, Cathy Rigby, Brent Barrett, Buzz Aldrin, Eileen Brennan, Susan Sarandon, Linda Evans and a lot of others who I am too tired to remember on a Saturday afternoon.

However, my favorites were Colleen Dewhurst and Shirley Jones; probably because I got kissed my both of them.

Back from day one of the Ray Courts show.  The first and only downside to our room is that Clint Walker had a very long line for two or three hours, and it completely blocked our tables (Druxy, Bridget, and I) from anyone entering the room.  Once his line cleared (he talks to everyone and is very slow in signing and people had multiple items) then we actually got some folks.  Bridget did very well.  I sold some books and a couple of Blu and Rays and a surprising number of photographs.  I do think I would have done even more had I been closer to Cindy.  Their area was hugely crowded for the first three hours - so much so that I probably would have had claustrophobia.  I said hey to Cindy, waved at Penny, said hi to Henry Winkler, and actually talked to Eddie Mekka for quite a while.  Also saw my old pal Leslie Eastabrook - she was in my musical Start At The Top.  Seka, the former porn star, said hi to me.  That was exciting.  Diane Baker smiled, Millie Perkins waved, James Darren came by and shook hands, Barry Bostwick nodded, and Paul Carafotes, who was across the way, and I had some funny looks and exchanges and discussed our Joe Brooks connection (he was in Joe's Headin' To Broadway movie with Rex Smith, and Joe was an investor in Nudie Musical).  I must now go eat.  Most of the celebs are doing the limo to the movie theater thing tonight, including Cindy and Penny, but that's just not for me.  I'll have a nice dinner, maybe do the treadmill if I can get up the energy, and then just relax.

It's some sort of unnatural cherry-strawberry combination. But it tastes great. In its pinkness.

Oh, and I forgot:

King Donovan (nice) Imogen Coca (b***h) and Edward Everett Horton (delightful).

I met King and Imogen after a dinner theater production. She was all taken with the vocal score for "On the Twentieth Century" that I had brought with me for her to autograph. She had never seen the photos from the production that were in the book (which featured Judy Kaye and not Ms. Kahn). While she was looking, her full-size poodles were running through the dining area licking things that the evening crowd would be eating from. I found it all hilarious and daffy.
