Well, you've read the notes, the notes were aligned, and now it is time for you to post until the aligned cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: COULROPHOBIA!
-
First post after BK!
-
Second post after MR BK.....and first post after DR TCB.
-
I have had such an adventure.....nothing like DR JOHNG's adventure in Greece, DR VIXMOM's trip to the Macy's LaZBoy Stores, or even DR JEANNE's trip to buy enchiladas.....but an adventure none the less.
I took my computer to the shop last Wednesday, when it stopped recognizing the DVD/CD drive. The man I talked to didn't seem to have any idea what it might be. But before I left (oh I had to go back home to get the power cord....they have always used one they had there....but this new part time man didn't seem to know that), we turned it on, and the disk drive was showing....
No call on Thursday. On Friday he called and said they were trying a couple of things and did I ever use Microsoft Works, they were going to have to delete it....I said no....
Saturday morning he called again....he was not sure what to do but that I would hear from someone. On Saturday afternoon a lady called and said they were doing some things, and that I would hear on Monday. The work would be $85.
TODAY, the first guy called back and started in on this and that....he said he was planning on doing a reset. I asked him if that would delete all my programs....he said no....I said hmmmmm.....okay.....then I heard a voice in the background and then he said...."oh, yes it will...."
WELL, friends at HHW. I must tell you, I am not a very nice person when I am angry. It takes a LOT to make me angry - but once I am there is no going back.
That was it for me - I told him what I thought of him and his company and his computer prowess....that I wanted my computer fixed and ready today - and I did NOT want to have to reload all my programs......there was clicking and clacking and I was put on speaker phone (which was probably unnecessary, they could probably hear me from my house).
Then I was put on hold....the OWNER of the company came on and said he was sorry....I had been misinformed, but I could come and pick up my computer if I wanted to. I said I would, immediately.....
I tried to stay calm while I was there....and said I depended on THEM because they were supposed to know how to do things.... If the drive was bad, the computer was less than a year old which means HP should fix it. Of course that fix would probably mean a WIPE of all my programs.
I put $85 down on the table....he said, let's make it $50....but I paid him the quoted price....they did do SOME work, although they never FIXED the problem.
Why is it so hard?
SOOOOOOOOOOOO.....now I have my computer back, but I do not have a DVD/CD/RW drive. I think I will buy an external one.
-
And that's the way it is.
-
In other news. The man on the board who promised to help me with the website, since our other guy decided he wanted money, downloaded a trial version of the program we use to edit it.....we have been using Contribute 3.0 which is very old.
He used Contribute 6.5. He was able to do some things that needed to be done. However.....now it will NOT respond to 3.0 since a newer version has been used. And I downloaded the trial.....but I can't do anything because it says the site is being edited by the administrator....the former idiot.....
So there you are.....I supposed I could contact Idiot and ask him to make me an administrator rather than a publisher.....but my guess is that he needs 6.5 to do that.....so I don't know if we are ahead of the game....or still behind the eight ball.
-
The End.
-
Jrand, I am very sorry to hear about your computer nightmare, but I am very glad to have you visit us in the early morning hours.

Yikes! What a couple of ordeals to deal with!

Well, Tom, I need to say good night, so, "Good night, Tom."
;)

Good night, George.

I have been trying to be sick all day.

Yikes, all sorts of computer vibes and sundry vibes to Jrand!

I have been trying to be sick all day.
I think i missed soemthing.

TOD: excluding of course some of the great pies made by relatives and friends...
the sour cream apple pie from Little Pie Company
on a budget level when a quick pie fix was needed: I really liked the Hostess apple pies that had the frosting, but they seem to be a thing of the past, at least in my local stores
-
Paris When It Sizzles arrived in Indiana yesterday.
-
Good morning, all.

Miracle vibes for BK.

Computer vibes for JRand.
-
Did someone say pie? My lips are smacking.
I think a well-made cherry pie is perfection that cannot be improved upon. This time of year, when fresh cherries are scarce, I made a cherry-cranberry pie with frozen Bing cherries and fresh cranberries.
-
On Crete, they have no idea what American-style pie is. Everything they called pie was actually what we would call cake. Somehow that irritated Carol to no end. It only bothered me once and that was because the apple pie (think crumb cake) was only average.
Walnut pie was very good, but it, too, was like a crumb cake. It made me want something like a pecan pie only with more walnuts and less corn syrup.
-
Good morning, all! Have I missed anything?
-
And whatever my posting problem was earlier, seems to have been fixed by the changeover to a new day.
That is a relief.
-
Welcome home, Larry!

Computer, website, and coping vibes for DR Jrand!
-
Hi DR elmore. You missed DR Vixmom's very funny chair story last night.
-
Good morning, all.
-
A laurel, and hearty welcome back to DR Elmore.
-
And a cautious welcome back to DR Jrand66 ... lest he be subject to going *poof* again at any moment.
-
A laurel, and hearty welcome back to DR Elmore.

I am not sleeping well. The threats to Medicare and Social Security leave me very frightened. Like many Americans I am dependent on them, and this GOP decision they should be privatized for their "friends" to run them alarm me. I don't trust the government but I distrust private organizations run by friends of people I detest even more.
-
If I had millions in the bank, it wouldn't concern me, but I can't even sell the property in Ohio at a decent price. Unless something drastic happens, I honestly hope I die soon.
Now, aren't you happy to see me?

TOD:
My favorite pie has always been a chocolate black bottom pie that one of my parents' friends would make every year at Thanksgiving. I wish I had gotten the recipe from her back then, but I was only 10. I've looked for it online and I found something comparable and I've made it a couple times, but I never felt it was quite the same.
Mark and I also love cherry pie and we'll eat apple if cherry is not available.
Mark's favorite is pineapple pie which is hard to find, but very easy to make especially if you buy a store-bought crust.
-
Tuesday morning greetings! The good news is that I was able to reserve a fresh turkey from our favorite meat market that we can pick up Saturday after 1pm for our Sunday Thanksgiving feast. The bad news is that The Grand Finale is so booked for Thanksgiving Day that their earliest available reservation is 7:30pm.
-
Welcome back, DR Elmore!
-
Thanks, everyone.
I nominate DR VIXMOM's chair story for the HHW Story of the Year.
-
I bought an external DVD/CD Writer/Reader that seems to be working fine. Time will tell.
-
MR BK needs a miracle? Vibes coming right up.
-
Good Morning
-
Sorry I missed yesterday :-( I'm trying really hard to check in every day
-
Welcome back, Larry. You've been missed. You are always in my prayers
-
DR elmore also need a miracle, VIBES THE PROPERTY SELLS!!!
-
Good morning.

In 1980, Peter Clem, a friend with whom I'd done summer theatre in 1970, asked me to be arranger and MD for a trio of singers. the group became "Just Good Friends," and we performed in every NYC cabaret, several WBAI radio programs, and for and every New York City Gay Men's Chorus benefit until the group split up in 1983. When I needed a place to stay between July and November 12, 1979, Peter had given me his spare room. I had to move out when his lighting designer boyfriend Alan moved back in on Nov. 14, 1979. Yesterday, Nov. 14, Peter and Alan were married after 37 years.
They just stopped by to drop off a large bundle of "Just Good Friends" music, since they are moving out of the area next month. In this photo of "Just Good Friends" from a 1981 magazine, Peter has the beard. He still does, only it's very gray now. I, of course haven't changed, at all, give or take 60 lbs.
-
Thanks for sharing that, Larry!
-
Good morning.
Good morning.

Hello, everyone.
-
DR elmore, gosh that is a nice story, and photo :)
-
Good to see DR Elmore back with us.
Occasional breaks are quite understandable, IMHO.
-
I shall attempt to drive to the car repair shop shortly.
-
DR John, Keith booked our flight to Austin this morning. We will see you in San Antonio :) :) :)

I think I will buy an external one.
Sounds like a very sensible plan to me.

Good morning, all! Have I missed anything?
Welcome back, Larry! :D

Miracle vibes to both BK and Larry.
I do hope that BK aligns the planets. Yesterday's posts indicate that they are clearly out of whack.

I'm off.
TTFN.

I'm up, I'm up - maybe six hours of sleep - I wanted to finish more of the script and I ended up thinking about it and making notes.

Looking for a collector's item?
My wife just picked up the only ccopy at the market.

Thank you to DRs Vixmom and Jeanne for last night's wishes for Richard!

Back from an omelet, and English muffin, and a few onion rings (maybe five) - lunched with Richard Sherman and writer/director Larry Cohen, he of God Told Me To, It's Alive, Q The Winged Serpent, and many others. And yes, it involves a project and I'm pretty sure we're going to do it at LACC next year, and should we, we will have a world premiere of a new Sherman Brothers musical.
-
Listening to the wonderful Earl Wild/Jascha Horenstein recordings for the four Rachmaninov piano concertos. Amazing playing, amazing orchestra playing. Has any other composer of a piano concerto put so many classic tunes in one concerto than Rachmaninov in his second concerto? It is its own greatest hits.
-
Also, even though I said I wouldn't, I went to the hall closet and found all my Mahler CDs - thankfully they were easy to get to. I listened to bits from each, but there was only one that I felt compelled to upload because comparing the others with this new Bernstein mastering, I didn't like any nearly as well. The much lauded and first choice for the third symphony, Horenstein on a Unicorn CD a) didn't sound great, and b) wasn't as emotional as the Bernstein - same with the Horenstein first. Klemperer was too harsh for me. And the others were okay. But the one I uploaded, interestingly, was the Barbirolli performance of the sixth - the only one in the Bernstein set that's a slight disappointment in both the first movement and the andante. The Barbirolli is very different in interpretation, with a much slower first movement, but the sound is great and I really like his take on the music, but the andante in his performance is everything I want from that music and you can hear them cow bells so clearly and it's so emotional. That will be my go-to sixth now, and Barbirolli's fifth is supposed to also be one for the ages - I have it here in its first CD incarnation, but subsequently it was remastered from the first generation tapes so I'll have that tomorrow.

Back from the car repair shop. The front tire--Monday's flat--has a puncture and cannot be repaired. The rear tire, currently functioning, does indeed still have a leak--another puncture--and also must be replaced. So, two new tires are needed. They don't have them in stock (no surprise), but I can return tomorrow or Thursday to have them installed. I'm driving on the mini spare and the leaky tire, which I hope gets me through the next day or two. I don't have far to go, but I do have a couple things on my calendar which I don't wish to reschedule.
The most disturbing part of this is that both mechanics I spoke to feel that this was vandalism. Two side punctures, both on the driver's side, at the same time. THAT really irks me.
-
Bruce, have you aligned the planets yet?

I think a well-made cherry pie is perfection that cannot be improved upon. This time of year, when fresh cherries are scarce, I made a cherry-cranberry pie with frozen Bing cherries and fresh cranberries.
I agree with your assessment of the cherry pie. I've never had cranberries in a pie, though, so I can't comment on that. Otherwise, I love cream pies...banana and coconut are my most favorites, but I wouldn't turn down a chocolate cream pie. As for fruit pies, in addition to the aforementioned cherry, I love blueberry pie. I'm fairly partial to peach or apple. I'll put pumpkin on my list, too. And there's always pecan pie, also one of my most favorite.

Cheesecake counts too, doesn't it? It's pie-ish. ;)

And speaking of pies, check out these 22 Intricate Pie Lattices That Will Give You Baking Goals (http://www.countryliving.com/food-drinks/g3673/pie-lattice-ideas/)! ;D

Those range from beautiful to fun. Especially fun is the rain, rain go away one. I think the hearts might be the easiest to make. All you need is a cookie cutter.
-
Good evening!
-
Thanks for the laughs, DR vixmom! Sorry you had to go through all that, but it was hilarious!
-
Got the Herrmann and Dutoit Planets so aligning will begin as soon as I finish listening to these gorgeous Rachmaninov concertos and the Rhapsody on a theme of Paganini.
-
Then I have a set of the Sibelius symphonies I found in the closet - Lorin Maazel conduction - I think these are supposed to be excellent performances. I have a few of the symphonies already in iTunes with Ormandy but would like them all since I share a birthday with Sibelius.
-
OMG DR Vixmom that story about the chair was so funny! Couldn't you just have phoned the store? I can't believe you drove there twice. Oy!
-
Welcome back DR Elmore!

Listening to the Dutoit Planets, certainly one of the most universally praised CDs ever. Well, it's mastered at such a low volume that you literally can't hear the soft bits at all and the loud bits sound like they're five blocks away. Now, that said, when I crank up the volume almost to capacity then you can hear everything okay and it sounds fine and the performance is certainly fine. But then those loud bits arrive and they're too loud so you're constantly adjusting the volume. Not for me. Audiophiles, who are somewhat loony and opinionated, LOVE this kind of dynamic range - but if I want to hear music from the last row of the balcony, which is what this sounds like at my normal playing level, then I'll go down the street and listen from there. I just don't ever understand this stuff. I suppose I could put headphones on, but that's not the way I think we're supposed to listen to music. So, it may well be a great performance but it's really hard to tell, and for me it certainly does not best the Steinberg.
-
Well, I hate to do it (no, I really do!), but I'm leaving work and going home to work on my lines before rehearsal tonight. We're supposed to be off-book, and I'm sorta close, but not completely, but at least we can call for lines for another week and a half...and it's only the first night off-book for me, so it'll be what it'll be.
Be back later!

4our!

The Herrmann is so wacky it's kind of entertaining in a non-entertaining way. Distortion, weird miking (close but not in a good way) and balances that at times are almost funny. And this recording was REALLY popular in the day. His Mars is a full 2:10 slower than the Steinberg. Funny, I typed Steinberg and it corrected to Sternberg. I wonder if I type Sternberg if will change it to Steinberg? Nope.
-
Page four? Really?
-
Screener arrived - something called Sully with Tom Hanks, directed by Clint Eastwood. Will watch in a few minutes.
-
I hope you like it as much as we did.
-
I normally love Herrmann's classical recordings but this is just so wacky it's wackily wacky in a wackily wacky wacky way.
-
I especially love the piccolos sitting amongst the violins. Unique.

Elmore, it was great to see you back here.
I listened to your song on Carols for a Cure today. Best song on that disc.
Is it just me or were there too many children singing this year? I haven't listened to the other disc yet.

Yes, it is.

Are you just doing "Let's Not Talk" or are you using any of "Let's Talk About Love"? I love the lyrics for both versions.

Great news about the show.
I remember seeing It's Alive back in college at a film class. I should saw, I sort remember seeing it. I had broken my glasses but went to the movie anyway. And like most memories -- or at least mine -- it's all a blur.

The second Brokenwood mystery is right up my alley: a wine judge is found floating in a vat of pinot noir. Wonderful.
-
Herrmann's PLANETS was a Phase 4 recording, so expect anything weird and gimmicky to happen at any time.
That, plus, I do think he was a little hit and miss when it came to interpretations of some standard repertoire.

Thank you all for the kind words about my chair story

Page four? Really?
-
Finished watching Sully, about which more later, and listening to the final movement of The Planets as conceived by Mr. Herrmann. And yet there are people on Amazon who LOVE this recording. It's the BEST. I think it's because Herrmann in Phase 4 mode tries to make it sound like one of his movie scores. It doesn't of course, but I think that's what people are responding to - but oh that distortion in the first movement - how could they not have heard it and redone it?
-
Still have Previn to go and maybe one or two others.
-
Here's something interesting - Steinberg, who observes Holst's own metronome markings for the first movement, which is much quicker than most of the ponderous first movements runs 6:37. Stokowski's runs exactly the same 6:37 so Steinberg isn't alone. I'll tell you add a little natural reverb to the Stokowski and voila. Other first movements that I've now heard run: 7:18 (Boult), 8:42 (Herrmann), 7:12 (Dutoit).
-
Listening to Steinberg again and it's just great.

In honor of BK's classical music binge, I was going to use the word movements, but unfortunately that is the way it is heading.

No rehearsal for me tonight. We can't afford to have me give this bug to the cast.

NO! Try Sambucol instead. About $10 at a health food store or drug store.
Too sick to go to the store, maybe tomorrow.

Isn't Sambucol also the name of an Italian liqueur?

How was rehearsal, George?
It went. ::)
;)

We got through most of act two four times. We couldn't run the entire act because a couple of people couldn't be there tonight, but my scene is early in the act, so we got through my scene.
-
Anybody in the show that I know (besides you)?
-
You did act two FOUR times?
-
I am starting to think that my "bug" might actually be my stone, as in kidney stone.
-
You did act two FOUR times?
Well, not all of act two. The scenes that we got through only took about 20 minutes, so it was fairly short.
-
I had most of my lines memorized...when I ran my lines by myself...but in the rehearsal, it all went out of my head. I hate it when that happens, but it pretty much always happens the first night I'm off book.
-
I think it does it to every actor the first night off book.
-
I think it does it to every actor the first night off book.
Yup.
-
Anybody in the show that I know (besides you)?
I don't know. Heather Christopher who played Joyce in TAO's The Brain From Planet X is in it. Otherwise, I think the rest of the actors are local to Olympia.
