BK, I didn't bother to see LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN, because I am a huge fan of the graphic novel, the premise of which takes several iconic fictional figures from late 19th-early 20th century adventure/fantasy fiction and brings them altogether...figures from the books of Rider Haggard, Sax Rohmer, Conan Doyle, etc. many of which I have collected and read since I was a boy. When I heard about changes that were going on I knew the movie would be no good. But the graphic novel is clever and a great lot of fun.
TOD: This one's easy. The Discworld novels of Terry Pratchett. Essentially comic fantasy, they transcend the genre and are some of the funniest, fall out of bed laughing, smartest satires ever written. They can also be moving and poignant as well. During the Bush era, I used to evoke a quote from Mr. Pratchett's novel THUD: "You can't call yourselves the good guys and do bad things."
