2. Hugh Jackman should do nothing but musicals and Wolverine. He is a sparkling song and dance man of the first order! Don't know ANY other male stars of the moment who have his showmanship and charisma.

4. Christina Applegate sounded flat in some of the singing, and her dance steps seemed to be about one step for every two steps that Gwen Verdon or Shirley MacLaine did in their Charitys. (I didn't see Debbie Allen, but I suspect she did like Verdon and MacLaine since Fosse choreographed her, too).

Jackman is so damned charming he almost makes me forgive him for the inept and moronic VAN HELSING.

Who choreographed this production of CHARITY?  The only reason to revive it is for Fosse; when will these revisalists ever learn:  sometimes it's not the title, it's the creators.

More thoughts:

Edward Albee's acceptance speech was genuinely moving and quite well done.

LA CAGE had VERY inventive choreography, and I was astounded that every one of those Cagelles did FULL splits rather than half splits. Even when I was young, I wouldn't do a full split, and I was amazed at the limber limbs of Les Cagelles (all men in this edition of the show).

But the number goes on TOOOOOOO LLLOOOOOOOOONNNNGGGGG! They cut 30 pages of music out of that number in our version. It just goes on forever. Of course, we don't have a trapeze for Zaza or any of the other amazing circus acts that go on during that number, but I do think numbers that run on like it does ad infinitum are butt numbing for an audience.

I second the vote for the statue ass.

One more thought or two:

CBS did not show the Tonys in high definition, a major disappointment (but truly, I didn't think they would).

Bleeping the word "ass" was a STUPID thing to do. My jaw honestly dropped when I realized that had bleeped Butz for that word (and it was obvious was he was saying). Good lord, I felt like we had regressed 20 years, back to when the lyrics were bleeped during "The Aggie Song" in WHOREHOUSE.

Why was Hugh Jackman put on that runway thing where he's got people in front and in back of him?  Inept.  And why waste time with the dance medley?  Mario Cantone gives me a headache.  The number from Dirty Rotten Scoundrels was cute - but not that well staged.  And that fershluganah lighting - I'm hoping it was just the Tonys and that the lighting is not that way in the show.  Broadway doesn't need concert lighting.  I also thought the Great Big Stuff chroreography was quite ordinary.

I'm going to have to WUSSBURGER, as I've my first day at work tomorrow, and before that der B wants me to go with him to the vet's, to find if Honey has a microchip ID.

Honey, BTW, is getting along well with the other dogs.  Her report card gets a "plays well with others" notation.  And earlier, while I was picking up videotape at WalMart, der B took her out and she got along famously with everyone she met in the parking lot.  She should be easy to place, if her original owners don't want her.

That's an overall problem with Broadway shows nowadays--excessive excess.  Great big sets, hundreds of dancers on stage at the same time doing numbers that go on and on and on (especially in revivals where they manages to stretch out or augment the original material.)  Whatever happened to "Less is more?"

I started taping the Tonys in 1980, but a dear friend (you know who you are) sent me a copy of the 1979 awards, and I found Liza's "City Lights" from THE ACT (that's 1978, I think) on a tape of performance excerpts I made when I first got my VCR.

Yes, it's been a long day (A HOW TO SUCCEED reference) for me, too, so I'm off to bed.

West Coasters, enjoy the rest of the Tonys. I'll read your reactions tomorrow morning.

How large is everyone's Tony Award on tape collection?  I go every broadcast since '83, with a few from the 70s purchased on eBay.
Since 1986, I'm only missing one year, and that was the year of RENT.

Buntrock and Dilly - met in Martin Guerre.  Why do these actors marry after meeting in shows.  I never understand it, really.

Six minutes to West Coast Tony Awards.

Yes, they did.  However, both were seeing other people at the time.  It wasn't until a few years later when they met again, and fell in love.  They're wonderful people, and a great couple.  -And I'm sooo happy for Erin.
