But, I discovered, quite accidentally, that there's a MAGGIE MOO's within a mile from my office building!

"Five Course Love," with book, music and lyrics by Gregg Coffin, opens a month-long run in a production by International City Theatre at the Center Theater of the Long Beach Performing Arts Center. Directed by carin desai, "Five Course Love" takes a look at the humorous complexities of love in five scenes, using three actors, Perry Lambert, Jennifer Shelton and Christopher Carothers, a band and a score of more than generous proportions.

"There are more than 250 pages of music in the show," desai said in a recent pre-rehearsal conversation in the Center Theater lobby that included the three performers. "And the show is only an hour and 25 minutes long. It moves so fast, and it is almost all music."

"Five Course Love" continues the ICT tradition, carried on by desai over the years, in bringing smaller musicals to the Southland, and she has found more than a few that deserved a bigger adueince than they got in New York. "In the musical thater today, there are lots of musicals that can't make it to Broadway because it s so expensive and dominated by corporate culture," desai said. "But there are many great shows that are being written and produced on a smaller scale, and this is one."

I know of the show, and I almost saw it back in 2005 down at Minetta Lane. The amazing Heather Ayers was in it, as was John Bolton and Jeff Gurner. Alas, the show itself, was not that amazing - at least from what I heard from friends at the time. And I've actually read through the piece before too. There are some catchy tunes, but just "some". $:-\$

However, I'm guessing the author has made some revisions and improvements since the NY production. I wish it well.
