Title: NOT ENOUGH HOURS IN THE DAY
Post by: bk on July 13, 2011, 12:17:47 AM
Well, you've read the notes, there were not enough notes in the day, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - apparently there are not enough hours in the day for them to get home, but we're hoping that will change soon.

ASK BK

I mentioned this other day and I don't remember if you answered it.

Is it to late to get a table at the Hollywood Show? It may be a way to get people to sign up for kickstarter. You can "pre-sell" the blu-ray and put that towards the kickstarter account or just get people to pledge.

Wednesday morning greetings!  The synod is in full swing today and I'm outta here for the day.  Off to the Mall of Georgia to have lunch with my college roommate Gail and to meet one of my Vera Bradley friends for coffee later.  Haven't seen Gail, or even communicated much, for 9 years - we have a lot of catching up to do!

Good morning, all! I slept well and I decided to sleep late. Yesterday I was waiting for Office Depot at Toyland and today I await an Office Depot delivery here: storage boxes for shipping to Ohio, and ink for the printer. I also need to make some inquiring telephone calls to my health insurance about Medicare, which I do not understand (oy!), and initiate this madness. I've also got to call my friend who was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease; I'm hoping that he hasn't left yet for Ohio Light Opera.

As for today's work, I've got the Overture and Finale Ultimo printed out and ready to go. All that remains is to wait for whatever new fresh hell turns up.

DR DantheMan, tell Snooki and The Situation hello for me.  And watch out for sand in unwanted crevices.

I'm comfortable on the radio and doing stuff by e-mail or phone - I haven't done much TV recently, but always enjoy doing the Skip E. Lowe show and ultimately had fun doing the ABC News thing.

I hate having such a small place. I cannot locate theOverture and finale Ultimo and I know I brought them back frm Toyland yesterday!

Now that Netflix is changing their policies, I thought i'd better catch up on any unreleased movies they show only on their site, so I just watched BITTER HARVEST withy Janet Munro and John Stride, who was the Romeo to Judi Dench's career-making Juliet at the Old Vic. Bleak and bitter, indeed. Almost the same story as OF HUMAN BONDAGE and that of my cousin, Judy the Whore. The lady was indeed a tramp.

She was kind of a female Laurence Harvey from ROOM AT THE TOP.....

Manhattan's latest child disappearance was tragically solved today:
http://www.hinterlandgazette.com/2011/07/levi-aron-arrested-for-murder-of-9-yo.html

I may have some information wrong here, but it's my understandng that he had begged his parents to prove he was grown up and to walk home from school/camp, and I gather he got lost before this creep came across his path. What I really wonder is why any parent would let a 9 year-old child walk home alone without being certain he could do it. It's so sad.

Today's outre easy listening report department:  I found an old Felix Slatkin LP on eBay for a few pennies, and it arrived yesterday.  Oy, what bizarre arrangements.  Limelight is done as a rock and roll piece, Spellbound is done a la Summer Place with triplets, etc.  And of course I love every minute of it.  :)

DR Cilla, I wonder which one of us is more the norm (me who gains weight in the winter or you in the summer). I honestly thought that many more people exercised in the summer. But I could maybe see more people going to the gym in the winter.

And now...

We have a brief rehearsal at 3:00, but I want to get a head start into DC since there's apparently even more roadwork going on today.

*Apparently, the traffic situation got even worse last night on the Beltway after a set of power lines were pulled down by one of the work trucks. They were able to get things back up and running after a few hours, but things came to a standstill for a while in both directions. Of course, the power lines have just been "bandaged" right now, and they're going to have make time for a true fix. Ugh.

DR George we don't do streaming with NetFlix.  We dropped from the new fee for "4 out at-a-time (no streaming) for $21.99 a month" to 3 DVD's out at-a-time.  I don't know what the new fee is since Keith changed it.

Craig said he didn't see an email from them.  He dropped DVD's & has only done streaming since living here.  He misses the DVD option & was sorry to learn of the price increase.

Back from screening and lunch meeting.  I'd say that the second half of Nudie Musical looks pretty immaculate with only the occasional white specks of negative dirt (it would take another twenty hours to clean all of that up and it really isn't worth it - it's so minor.  They did an amazing job of removing the cue marks and all the light scratches (not that there were that many) - but the most amazing thing is that they cleaned up the end credits, which were riddled with big fat ugly gold and green emulsion scratches up and down both sides of the image.  Those are now completely gone and I do mean not a trace.

But there were a few things in the first fifteen minutes of the transfer that I thought could be better, clean-up wise, and they probably just prioritized what they could do in the time allotted.  Some of that had to do with the white negative specks, but mainly had to do where reel one and one A are joined together (at the ten-minute mark).  Whoever cut the original camera negative did a very poor splice there and the image has always had a little hiccup, plus the ten seconds before and after the join were still scratchy - so I approved doing two more hours and they'll take care of that section and told me they can absolutely get rid of the hiccup in the picture - that will be a wonderful thing.  Of course, it's just more money, so we really have to get this Kickstarter thing happening because as of Monday I'll be writing a rather frightening check to the lab.  Meantime, I told them I can come back tomorrow to just see that fifteen minutes and then it's approved.  Also, the sound had a teeny bit of distortion but I'm going to assume that was the room we were in because we didn't hear any of that doing the audio layback.  It wasn't bad, but it shouldn't really be there at all, so I asked my gal to have the guy who did the layback check on it, especially during the main titles and opening scene.
Title: Re: NOT ENOUGH HOURS IN THE DAY
Post by: bk on July 13, 2011, 02:21:17 PM
I was astonished again how nice the transfer looks and sounds.  No, it's never going to look like a big-budget film, and yes, it's fairly grainy at times - we could go in and de-grain and sharpen, but then it loses its film look.  And this transfer is so much more detailed than the DVD and it's certainly as sharp as what was on the internegative.  So, I don't really want to tamper with it - but I discussed it with the clean-up guys and they thought it looked like film and that's what we want.

If you pardon the pun I am not sure this musical will be to everyone's taste.

Charles Isherwood mentions it differently, but there is a song about the c-word which liberally uses the word.. There is an encore and a reprise and the music is used for the curtain call. (This is from a podcast review that Peter Filichia did)

Also on that July 3rd pod cast Peter Filichia talks about all the over the top things that occur in the show that the review fails to mention. Stand-in for male genitalia, dog feces, ejaculate on a woman's face

I may be coming an old fuddy duddy but these are things I would like to know about before I decide to see a show.

But from what I also read  that show is packing them in and the audience loves.

George, I don't know if you are interested, but the 5th Avenue is having a "One Day Only" Sale on CINDERELLA, which I believe is their holiday production.  If you have the code, you can purchase tickets for $29.00 a piece, but only till midnight tonight.

The seats are probably up in the Second Balcony, but it is better paying $29.00 instead of $60.00 for the second balcony.

I did get the pork butt - 15 pounds worth.  Have decided to make it in my electric roaster oven.  I have one pan I can use, but there are two big hunks of meat, so I think I'll use the roaster.   I'm thinking of doing one with my brother's recipe - no rub just onion, salt and pepper and a couple other spices with some chicken broth - and the other with a rub.   I'm sure some of the flavors will meld, but it will be interesting to taste the difference in the meat.

I bought 4 different kinds of sauce for people to choose their own.   I got several kinds of beer, 3 kinds of pop, water, cabbage from the farmers market to make cole slaw, I also touched up the deck, pulled weeds in the lower patio, cleaned up the yard so it can be mowed tomorrow and did a few other things.  What I didn't do was clean, lol.    I did make a list of everything I need to do before the party.  That will help me get it all done.

I didn't even know this was happening!  Out of the loop....I guess.

Brent Barrett is Hannibal Lecter

http://theater.nytimes.com/2011/07/12/theater/reviews/silence-the-musical-at-theater-80-review.html?ref=theater

Um, I think I'd be skipping this show.

Me too

Tonight I'm invited to go out for dinner for another friend's birthday.  The hostess can't make it to my house Saturday night so she included me in the small dinner party.  I'm looking forward to it....OH YIKES!! I need to start getting ready or I won't be able to go in time to buy a birthday card on the way....laters.....

My question for ASK BK day:

What is your favorite type of interview:  radio/internet, newspaper magazine, or television?

I'm comfortable on the radio and doing stuff by e-mail or phone - I haven't done much TV recently, but always enjoy doing the Skip E. Lowe show and ultimately had fun doing the ABC News thing.

Tragic!

I just did two short updates on Kickstarter, posting two videos I shot with the iPhone - unfortunately, because I was watching in low-light, the iPhone's contrast gets wonky, so the Lesbian, Butch, Dyke number gets REALLY colorful - it looks great when you're in person watching it - here's a link to the first clip then just go to update five.

Truly heartbreaking & the parents will be haunted by there decision forever.  I can only say as a parent I got lucky sometimes regarding my decisions.

LOL, DR TCB!  I got pasta Spaghetti Junction twice with no problems.  It helped to know which lane to be in - my cousins coached me yesterday.  Had a delightful lunch with Gail who was my roommate our junior year at Michigan and then had coffee with a Facebook Vera Bradley friend.  I got back to church in time for communion and dinner and now I'm about to call my (and DR Elmore's) longtime friend Becki.  She may come over for a drink this evening.

On the news tonight, it was explained that the parents had walked the boy through the route, but they must have not heavily pushed his remembering any landmarks. He should only have walked a couple of blocks and turned right once, then it was straight to where his mother was waiting for him. He didn't make the right turn, kept walking straight, and got horribly lost. The person he asked for help was the killer.

I would have made him walk the route and followed behind him to prove he knew where he was going before I trusted he could do it. The community, which is heavily Hassidic Jewish, is a very safe neighborhood, so the residents are completely stunned by this.

I just read about the safe neighborhood making it more understandable his parents let him walk alone.  I probably would have done what DR elmore suggested or begun with letting him just walk to the street where he needed to turn.

So very sad.

DR Jane, yes, I'm sure my friends will help me clean up.  Since it's pot luck they pretty much have to if they want their dishs back :)  They would anyway.  If I asked, they would help me set up too, but I want to do it myself.  I've been to all their homes and it's time to pay them back.  This isn't stressful for me, just a lot to do.  I've known the people coming for 5-10 years.  I'm not worried about trying to impress them, just want the house to look good, since almost all of them have never been here, and I want everyone to have fun.  The only thing that is putting a wrench in the plans is the forecast for 111 heat index that day.

Tonight was interesting.  One of my friends who can't make it Saturday invited me to join her, another friend who has a birthday this week, her boyfriend and the friend I was discussing before and it was her treat. She was looking forward to the 5 of us dining together.   The other "friend" who wanted to bring three people to my house, showed up after being at a wine tasting with 3 other people with her.  It was very ackward for a few minutes, then we all moved to a big table and the evening ended up ok.   Then what really floored me is I bought a card for Mark - the other birthday.  He thought it was funny so he sent it around for people to look at.  One of the people the "friend" brought, signed it and passed it on!   She was about the 4th person to get it and no one else signed it.  She probably thought it was a group card, but I thought the whole thing was pretty rude.  Of course that's the person coming to my house as the "friend"s guest on Saturday.   I asked if she got my email. she said "Well you are letting me bring ONE guest"  I said "Yes, I am".

The friend who organized the evening asked at one point how you handle a situation like this gracefully.  She said that the other "friend" totally disrupted her evening plans but she was going to be gracious about it because it wasn't the fault of the people she brought. "Friend"  told them it was a big party, which it was never intended to be

When I got home I put a rub on both of the pork butts.   Tee hee, I just had to type that. Anyway, they are in the fridge.  I wraped them tightly then read I should have wrapped them loosely, but oh well, they'll be all right.   Tomorrow I'll get up early and get them started in the roaster oven.  It won't heat the house up as much as the big oven does.    I wish I had a table for it.  I'm going to just set it on the stove when I go to work, but then I can't use the stove all day....hmmmm...may have to rethink this.

She'll be OK.  By the time the evening was over tonight, I think she actually got it that she shouldn't have done that.  Not that it will stop her in the future, but she apologized - she also said we looked at them like they were aliens when they came in, lol.   We did all have a good time tonight after the initial ackward moment trying to figure out how we were going to deal with it.   I'm glad I  said something about my party, but  I think I was more put off at the audacity of bringing a group to a small dinner gathering than I would have been to my party which is larger and was described in the invitations as casual.
