I went to Borders last night with a coupon to get 40% off three CDs!  I bought Dave Koz's "At the Movies - Double Feature (http://www.borders.com/online/store/TitleDetail?sku=5099951739225)" (it includes a DVD), Barry Manilow's "The Greatest Songs of the Seventies (http://www.borders.com/online/store/TitleDetail?sku=886971422221)" (with also includes the dual-disc CD/DVD) and for something completely different, someone I’ve never heard of, Moya Brennan's "An Irish Christmas (http://www.borders.com/online/store/TitleDetail?sku=094636678429)."  I'm listening to that right now and it's quite good.

PRESS-TELEGRAM (http://www.presstelegram.com/lifestyle/ci_10907794)

Quote
Silk Stockings: Reimagining a Cold War musical
...
Ross approached the Cole Porter estate about working on the play.

"I said, can I take a crack at it? At least it could be done in regional theaters and on the road, wherever. I think I have a way to make it fun and work again. Yes, it would be great if it becomes a hit, but I never make predictions," he said.

The press materials say this production is both "imagined by" and directed by Ross.

"It feels like a brand-new show that you've never heard before," he said, "because nobody's heard it.

"It's not daunting to put the whole thing together in two weeks, it's just an intense period, because there's no template. In 'Fiddler on the Roof,' you know you're going to do the bottle dance and you know you're going to sing 'L'Chayim.' Here, it's like, 'How far should we take that production number? How long should that scene be?' "

Ross said the production is essentially a premiere, because the book has been rewritten at least 80 percent and the whole structure has changed.

"But I tried to keep it as close to the spirit in which it was written without getting too campy," he said. "I think that camp thing is over. We passed that part. I think we're really interested in the reality of the love story.
"And the dancing is amazing," he said. "The original musical - even the Fred Astaire movie - had very few production numbers. So we changed that. The whole show, I hope, dances."

Well, I guess BK said it all.

Post by: Danise on November 11, 2008, 01:53:55 AM
Hi all,

I’m sorry that I just posted and ran.  At the time, I was just so tired and I couldn’t talk about the day.  It was just too much.

I wanted to do something special for my folks since this may be the last time I will make it up this way for a very long time.  I wanted to buy one of those dog statues—you may have seen the kind that I’m talking about.  The black lab with a bone in his mouth?

Anyway, I couldn’t find one.  I didn’t think about the stores putting those kind of things away.  They are everywhere down in Florida.  They’re just kinda heavy and I thought it would put me over the weight limit with my bag.  The airlines charge a fee if you go over 50 lbs.

I went to a couple of stores and finely went to a Home Depot.  I was told if they didn’t have them, no one would at this time of year.  Well, they didn’t but after looking around I noticed a bird feeder pole and they the last of their wind chimes on sale.  I thought that would make a fine gift so that’s what I got along with some flower bulbs.  Purple for Mom and white for Dad.

Then I passed a Goodwill store and decided to go in to see what they had.  I found a very nice angel statue, one of the Virgin Mary that must have been a plant holder at some point and another little statue of the Virgin Mary so I bought them all.

I then went to a local grocery store and bought 2 dozen roses and a gallon of water.

When I got to the cemetery, I had a fright because they had a crew out down the way from where I needed to be.  I thought they would stop me from what I wanted to do with Bear.  As luck would have it, they were only there for a few minutes and then they drove away.  I was afraid they might come back so I had to dig the hole for Bear in a hurry.

It was much harder then I thought it would be.  Not just emotionally but physically.  The ground was full of rocks and hard clay.  I didn’t get to bury him as deep as I would have liked.  I put his last chew and his favorite toy from when he was a puppy with him.  There wasn’t room for his saucer (frizzbee) so I put that on Dads side (not buried) with one of the rocks.  I don’t think it will bother anyone.

I know this will be hard to believe but I’m not making it up—the sky was overcast yesterday but I swear that when I first put the shovel to the dirt to bury Bear, the sun came out.  Not for very long but I was so amazed.  It was one of “those” special moments like a sign from above.  I think Someone was smiling down on me and approving what I was doing.  It was one of those things you hug to your heart and never forget.

I took one of the little stones I dug up, used a key to write Bear’s name on it and laid it on top of where he is.  No one would notice it unless they really look and it won’t last long.  One good rain and the writing will be gone. Then I took some leaves (there was plenty of them around) and covered where I dug.  I hope they stay there long enough to give the ground time to look normal again.

Then I assembled the bird feeder pole with the hook and hung the wind chimes.  I put a dozen of the roses in the vase and planed all of the bulbs.   I sat the statues I  bought on the name plate.  Then I went down to Joe’s grave, put the roses in the vase, planted some bulbs and placed the small statue near the head stone for him.  I think the small statue looked really well because I’m never sure how things would be viewed by the family.  I don’t know if they would want or allow something from me.  I don't think it was overly flashy but showed my respect and love for my half brother.

Then I spent most of the day just sitting beside my parent’s graves, listening to wind chimes and thinking about them.  I know that wasn’t the smartest thing to do considering how cold it was.  I saw on the news that it never got warmer then 32 degrees but I couldn’t help myself.  I just didn’t want to leave.  I feel like I'm coming down with something already but I still would have stayed.

Before I knew it, it was after four and too late to try to meet with DR td.  By the time I made it back to the hotel, I was just tired and cold and very emotionally drained.  I didn’t want to go out again so I just ate that hotel restaurant then went to my room.

I did have one last surprise.  When I looked out of my hotel room window, I saw a deer in the wood behind.  I had hoped to see one.  The one on the side of road that I saw yesterday broke my heart.  It was a female and I know where there is one, there must be others but I didn’t see them.

I pulled a chair next to the window and watched that one deer for quite a while.  It was a nice way to end a emotionally charged day.

I guess you’re all wondering how I feel now that I’ve kept my promise to Mom and I wish there was an easy answer.  Walking away from those graves yesterday was about the hardest thing I’ve ever done.  I feel deep sorrow, loss, lonelyness, happiness that I did I promised, pride that did this despite how worried I was about doing it.   Yes, I feel peace but also I feel empty and drained.  Certainly this was a growing experience for me—I did this whole thing on my own with no help from anyone.  I got myself here, did what I needed to do and will see myself home.  I see that as both a good thing and a bad.  I wish…

Right now I’m in a whirlpool of emotions and it will take time to sort them all out.  I just want to go home and sleep in my own bed with Sheena beside me.

Thank you all for your thoughts, vibes and prayers.

Oh, and would you believe that I missed seeing snow—YET AGAIN?!   I was told by several of the people I spoke to in the shops that it snowed last night about the time I was online-- but it was gone by morning.  If I had only looked out the window—ahh well.  Maybe it’s a good thing to have some goals left to look forward to.

I’m heading back to bed (after I look out the window).

G’night all.

Hey, JR, you use AVG for anti-virus, don't you? A friend is looking for a free anti-virus program and asked for some recommendations. The one I use is a bit too complex for her (she's somewhat technically challenged). She doesn't go on-line much and doesn't want to pay for something like Norton or MacAfee plus renewing it every year and then buying a new one when they decide they need to toss the old program, etc., etc., etc.

So, how does AVG work for you? Are you happy with it? Does it slow down your system? Is it fairly easy to use and understand?

Still drawing up a list for my DeepDiscount order.  I'm trying to decide about the new Flintstone Complete Series set.  My one gripe about it is the cute but unwieldy storage box it comes in.  Maybe I should just price out all the individual sets and see what that would total out to.

Nope--just checked--the individual set are about $34 each on DeepDiscount (only $20 on Amazon) with the entire series set costing just $90.  I'll put that purchase off for now...

Good morning, all! My two tasks today are my church job and THE MOST HAPPY FELLA, such a coincidence!

When I first heard the OBC, around 1963 or so, I disliked the show. I had always loved "Standing on the Corner" from its days as a pop hit, and "Happy To Make your Acquaintance," but a lot of the score left me completely cold; I kept thinking, why isn't it as good as GUYS AND DOLLS or WHERE'S CHARLEY? I wasn't helped in that the first production of the show I ever saw was a Cincinnati Opera production around 1977 with Louis Quilico, who was quite good, and a soprano who seemed to be telling everyone "am I not pretty and talented?" with everything she did.  I think I finally fell in love with the show around 1992, with the Goodspeed revival, which was so wonderfuly staged by Gerry Guitierrez, although I missed the great orchestrations, and suddenly six years later, just before Christmas, I was in London recording a complete edition of the show with Louis Quilico, and Frank Loesser's daughter and widow, after spending the previous four months preparing the cut materials, and cleaning up the orchestra scores. I'd spent half of 1997 working with Jo Loesser on GREENWILLOW, the first half of 1998 on WHERE'S CHARLEY? and a Symphony space Wall-To-Wall Frank Loesser event, and spending a week in London with her and Emily was one of the best Christmas gifts I've ever had.

My memory is that the New York cast overdubs happened in early 1999, after John Yap had finished mixing the sessions from London, and I remember several days in the studios getting the cast to react to things in the dance music, talking to friends who were in and out to record (my goddaughter Charlotte and her mother both have small roles, as do I), and spending a lot of time chatting with Emily, Jo, and Karen Ziemba, whom I adore.  I remember a playthrough later in the year at MTI for the entire cast and how moved I was by it.

As to the "aren't I talented and pretty" soprano I didn't like much as Rosabella? Her name is Nancy Shade, a wonderful singer and actress who became a friend during GREENWILLOW, where she played a wonderful mother to Gideon Briggs and her brood, and she plays Tony's manipulative sister Marie on the recording of MOST HAPPY FELLA.  I think she's a fantastically fierce and committed performer, and I blame the director of that Cincinatti performance for everything.

So, now I'm editing a complete new edition of THE MOST HAPPY FELLA, and enjoying every minute of it. I think my affection for the show owes a lot as well to Mr BK, since it was his idea to pair me up with Liz Callaway to do a recording of Loesser songs. Liz' original choice for MD did not work out, I'm happy to report, and we were blessed with Alex Rybeck, who works a lot now with both Callaway sisters. The Loesser album was the beginning of my long association with BK and I hope that lasts the rest of my life as well.

So, let's talk about Loesser songs:
Baby, It's Cold Outside
Two sleepy People
Rumble Rumble Rumble
Spring Will Be A Little Late This Year
No Two People
They're Either Too Young or Too Old
Anywhere I Wander
Sing A Tropical Song (Patti, Maxine, and Laverne Andrews know just how to sing thisI

RE: Frank Loesser.

Really can't think of any songs of his I DON'T like. They're so precisely constructed. "Cinderella, Darling" is probably my least favorite, but really, it's not bad.

I think his score for HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN is the most underrated film musical score ever.

WALL-E on Blu-ray came in the mail this morning, so this is what I'll be working on today. DR Danise - Thank you for your sharing your day - and your emotions - with us.  You have nothing to feel bad about, absolutely nothing.  I hope that once you're back down in Florida, that you'll not only be able to get a full day's rest, but, as DR td mentioned, I hope you do something fun for yourself.

...I think my affection for the show owes a lot as well to Mr BK, since it was his idea to pair me up with Liz Callaway to do a recording of Loesser songs....

I remember how thrilling it was to receive a copy of that CD in the mail from DR Elmore.  One of my favorites is "What're You Doing New Year's Eve?"

It's amazing, isn't it, these Loesser song choices.  He was one of the all-time greats - the Loesser/Callaway idea was mine, and what a pairing it turned out to be - every song on that album is a gem, and the fact that it was my first album for Varese, my first multi-track session, my first mix - it came out incredibly well.  As to Liz herself, I think it's one of the greatest debut albums ever.

I've only heard the Yap recording twice - I just didn't cotton to it.  I like parts of the London cast recording (issued only as a highlights album), but the OBC cannot and will not ever be replaced, even though one wishes they could have done a couple of retakes, orchestra-wise.

While I was still waking up this morning, I thought I heard some familiar music coming from the radio - well, on WQXR.  Well, as the proverbial fog lifted, I realized I was hearing part of Charles Ives's "Concord Sonata".  And it turned out it was being played live by a pal of mine, Jeremy Denk (http://jeremydenk.net).  -Who happens to be making his Carnegie Hall/Zankel Hall solo recital debut tonight.  -And, yes, I will be in the audience for it too.

He'll be playing the Ives tonight, and pairing it with Beethoven's "Hammerklavier" sonata.  He's been on tour with this program over the past few weeks, and his Zankel Hall debut tonight is his "closing night".  Should be a wonderful evening in many respects.

Out of curiosity, esteemed BK, what kind of pit does the Alex Theater (http://www.alextheatre.org/) have these days?  Back when I worked there, in my first serious post-college job when it was a terribly run-down movie theater, there was no pit that I remember (unless they had something underneath the stage, which I don't remember being there), and the stage itself isn't remarkably deep.  So, where would they put an orchestra, other than on the stage, and if they did that, where would they put the actors?

The Alex was designed to be a movie theater - anything involving the stage was an afterthought (although theater designers at least kept the thought in mind back in those days).

This isn't to say that, in it's current usage as a total venue for film, stage, and concerts, the sound quality shouldn't be given the utmost care (which clearly last night's performance lacked).  But the question remains: where do you put the danged orchestra?

I fell in love with THE MOST HAPPY FELLA via the marvelous three lp set from Columbia; I used to take it out of the library quite often.
I was lucky to see an outstanding production of it during the 1970s at Pittsburgh's Civic Light Opera.  It starred the magnificent Leigh Beery and THE GUIDING LIGHT's Don Stewart (also an original cast member of Broadway's CAMELOT).  I liked it so much that I saw that production three times in the course of the week it was playing.

And here is Mr. Eckern's apology - and a perfect example of why the duplicitous campaign for the yes vote squeaked through.  I do believe this will get thrown out of court because if they don't the constitution is meaningless.

Where is it?

Oh, yeah.

"I understand that my choice of supporting Proposition 8 has been the cause of many hurt feelings maybe even betrayal. It was not my intent. I honestly had no idea that this would be the reaction. I chose to act upon my belief that the traditional definition of marriage should be preserved. I support each individual to have rights and access and I understood that in California domestic partnerships come with the same rights that come with marriage."

As has been revealed to Mr. Eckern and others who at first supported Prop 8, the rights afforded people by domestic partnerships and civil unions are not equal to those of married couples. This is in sheer contradiction to the advertisements used by the "Yes on 8" campaign. It was made clear to Mr. Eckern that the anger and betrayal felt by the community was not over his vote, but by his contribution towards an organization trying to win, by not being truthful about the facts.

Mr. Eckern went on to say: "I definitely do not support any message or treatment of others that is hateful or instills fear. This is a highly emotional issue. I have now had many conversations with friends and colleagues and I now have a better idea of what the discrimination issues are, how deeply felt these issues are and I am deeply saddened that my acting upon my religious convictions has been devastating to those I love and admire...I am deeply sorry for any harm or injury I have caused."

In addition to his apology, Mr. Eckern has made a contribution of $1000 towards the fight for equal rights for all.

DR SWW, I like the Judy Collins cover of "Marieke," because of the lines concerning the towers, but, Shuman's translation captures the true essence of the song.
Elly Stone and Gay Marshall both have quite haunting renditions of the song available on BREL cast albums.

DR Ann - perhaps we here at HHW can call you "Ann Marieke," (an almost THAT GIRL reference).

Last week, a co-worker of mine got extremely angry with me.

She was crowing about Obama's victory, and I pointed out that the passage of Prop. 8 in California (and of Prop. 2 in Florida) kinda tarnished that victory.

I further pointed out that, what with Obama taking 65% of the vote in California, and with Prop. 8 taking 52% of the vote, that gave an overlap of a minimum of 13% of the vote, with people voting for Obama and for Prop. 8 at the same time.  (The same overlap applies to Floriday, by coincidence.)

Coworker was outraged.  "You can't believe any of those numbers, numbers lie!"

Uh, right.  This just proves to me that there is a lot of work left to be done, on both sides of the aisle.

"And, what does it matter to you, anyways?  You live in Delaware now."

My condolances to all the friends der B and I left in California.  I guess none of you matter any more.  Sorry about that.

(This exchange has been eating at me for a week now.  Bleh.)

Hats Off!

Along the street there comes

A blare of bugles, a ruffle of drums,

A flash of color beneath the sky:

Hats off!

The colors before us fly....

But more than the flag is passing by....

Days of plenty and years of peace;

March of a strong land's swift increase;

Equal justice, right, and law,

Stately honor and reverend awe;

Sign of a nation, great and strong

To ward her people from foreign wrong:

Pride and glory and honor,-all

Live in the colors to stand or fall.

Hats off!

Along the street there comes

A blare of bugles, a ruffle of drums;

And loyal hearts are beating high:

Hats off!

THE FLAG IS PASSING BY!

Apology (http://www.broadwayworld.com/article/Artistic_Director_of_California_Music_Theatre_Apologizes_for_Yes_On_Prop8_Contributions_20010101)

Sounds to me more of an "I'm sorry you feel that way about what I've done" than an actual apology.

Hi Folks,

I'm at the airport, waiting for the plane to take me to Atlanta.   I don't know why they can have a non stop TO Pittsbugh but not one back.  The flight at the gate before mine was a non stop to Orlando.  Is Tampa really that much further (as the crow flys, so to speak?)?

Moya was the lead singer of Clannad, and is Enya's sister (or cousin--can't remember which).  Enya has a new Christmas CD out, too.

We had one of those amendments about one man/one woman type thing.  I voted No but it still passed.  Now all the elderly that couldn't marry so they could both get their SS checks are going to be in trouble.  They were talking about that when I left home.  Really smart.  Cut your nose off to spite your face.

I'm playing the OBC of The Most Happy Fella.  It carries the specious and unacceptable credit "Remixed by Thomas Z. Shepard, Producer."  How exactly do you "remix" a mono recording?  And who does this guy think he is screwing with other people's work?  And I must say the remastering for CD (done in 1991) sounds like it has a blanket over it and some good mastering engineer could have done wonders with it.  That said, what a cast album, what orchestrations, what performances.  I'm even enjoying Jo Sullivan on this hearing - she sometimes grates on me.

The Green Fields of France
by Eric Bogle (written 1975)

Well, how ya doing, Private William McBride?
Do you mind if I sit here, down by your graveside?
And I'll rest for a while in the warm summer sun,
I've been walking all day, Lord, and I'm nearly done.
I see by your gravestone, you were only nineteen,
When you joined the glorious fallen in 1916.
Well I hope you died quick and I hoped you died clean.
Or Willie McBride, was it slow and obscene?

Did they beat the drum slowly?
Did they sound the fife lowly?
Did the rifles fire o'er ye as they lowered ye down?
Did the bugle sing Last Post and chorus?
Did the pipes play the Fleurs o' the Forest?

And did you leave a wife or a sweetheart behind?
In some faithful heart is your memory enshrined?
And though you died back in 1916,
To that loyal heart, are you always 19?
Or are you a stranger, without even a name,
Forever enshrined behind some glass pane,
In an old photograph, torn, 'n' tattered and stained,
And fading to yellow in a brown leather frame?

Well the sun's shining now on these Green Fields of France.
The warm wind blows gently and the red poppies dance.
The trenches have vanished long under the plough.
No gas and no barbed wire, no guns firing now.
But here in this graveyard it's still No Man's Land,
The countless white crosses in mute witness stand.
To man's blind indifference to his fellow man,
And a whole generation who were butchered and damned.

And I can't help but wonder now Willie McBride,
Do all those who lie here, know why they died?
Did you really believe them when they told you the cause?
Did you really believe that this war would end wars?
The suffering, the sorrow, the glory, the shame,
The killing, the dying, it was all done in vain.
For Willie McBride it all happened again,
And again and again and again and again…

Aren't we fortunate that Columbia recorded almost the entirety of THE MOST HAPPY FELLA! Imagine if they had only done a record like STREET SCENE (or Capitol's FOLLIES) with so much of the score missing?

Don't forget DREAMGIRLS. :-\

I try to!

Hello, Fellow Dear Readers. I have been errant and truant. That is all.

DR Laura!  I was hoping you would get online.  When the mail arrived yesterday, it contained the most lovely and thoughtful package to my little Toby from you and yours.  I cannot thank you enough for such a sweet care package.  After a weekend filled with trials, it was a wonderful way to begin a new week.  Please also thank Sandra for me.  I have no doubt that the dinosaur will be come a treasured possession when he reaches the right age, and he already seems to enjoy holding his monkey.

So...

It appears that our current subletter snores from time to time...

And it appears that sometimes the snoring can be quit loud and voluminous....

And it appears that sometimes the snoring happens to be the same "frequency" as the vibrate ringer on my iPhone...

I had SUCH a crush on Don Stewart when I was in college. I watched THE GUIDING LIGHT just for him!

Then I watched WALL-E. I had not seen it in theaters. It never came to my local theater a few blocks from my house, and I didn't drive across town to see it.

Brilliant, imaginative movie. No one really does this kind of original, unusual CGI animated films like Pixar. KUNG FU PANDA which I watched Saturday night was fun, beautifully animated, but the story was rather prosaic.

WALL-E's story was unlike anything I've ever seen before, the animation was terrific, and that sense of timing with visual jokes just sublime.

We had one of those amendments about one man/one woman type thing.  I voted No but it still passed.  Now all the elderly that couldn't marry so they could both get their SS checks are going to be in trouble.  They were talking about that when I left home.  Really smart.  Cut your nose off to spite your face.

They said it was already illegal for same sex marrage in Florida anyway so I don't know why it was even on the ballot.

It was on the ballot because the zealots wanted to deprive gay families of any semblance or recognition.

All the fuss about CA's Proposition 8 is ironic. Even after Proposition 8, gay families in CA have more rights and privileges (and responsibilities) than do gay folks anywhere except MA.

Gay folks in FL are being stripped of their hard-earned status and other states are not even addressing the possibility of domestic partner ships.

We still do not have a Federal Employment Non-Discrimination Act. Many states (like Delaware) still sanction overt gay discrimination.

Prop 8 is a done deal in CA. The next step is in process - a petition to the CA Supreme Court to throw out the Proposition because it is a "revision" not an "amendment" to the Constitution (revisions can not be enacted by voter initiative). If that fails, then it's back to square one and a campaign to put another initiative on the ballot to repeal Proposition 8. (At this point, the gay activist community does not want to risk an appeal to the US Supreme Court). In Arkansas voters have approved a measure banning unmarried couples who are living together being adoptive or foster parents. So, no more gay couples providing foster home for unwanted AIDs babies.

The CA after-the-fact posturing on Prop 8 may feel good, but it accomplishes little - that rage needs to be converted to diligent and persistent outreach to the minority communities that tipped the scales against the initiative and to the churches that want to impose their morality on everybody.

Saltzman felt that boycotting the theater and potentially harming productions and employment was not such a good thing.

He has a point there, one I suspect was considered when the original call to boycott was sent out.

In some ways I think it a shame this information didn't come out before the election.  If the apology is honest this might have been one more opportunity to educate.

Jack, aren't there any local places aound there to do theater during the winter?

Yes for people who not lazy.  I was asked to audition for a show....but it's THE WAYFARERS and it's a strong Irish accent, and a tough play....especially since I don't like the director much.  I am THINKING ABOUT IT.

I usually just work at one particular theatre....Indy is pretty cliquish theatre wise...if you are based or identified with one theatre....you usually can't work at another....but it's all unspoken of course.

I will of course keep HHW informed.

Not me, DR TCB!

'm back from 14th Street and a lovely Italian dinner, some tasty salmon with spinach and potatoes. I saw a bunch of friends I hadn't seen in about 14 months and caught up on all the gossip. On the way back there was a subway artist - the first I've ever seen in my 30 years of Manhattan living - who sketched me and my friend Wayne. The sketches are quite good.

elmore, I am glad you had a nice dinner.  Did the artist sketch the two of you clothed, or naked?

I sent my sister-in-law Jo today an email that I would not be back to Ohio for Thanksgiving, but that I was seriously thinking about flying back for Christmas, maybe from Dec 15 to Dec 28 or so, depending on their plans. She wrote back to say they had no plans to go anywhere, I was withering away to nothing, needed some good downhome cooking, and to come whenever I want. So, I think Christmas is booked.

VIBES BIG TIME!

Yes - so far - yesterday I was invited(by someone who had no knowlege of what 's been going on) to a women's prayer meeting to be held at church tonight

I wasn;lt planning on going but since it was held 4 hours after i was given the news, I decided I would, and I am so glad I did -  it was exactly what I needed

- the ENT is really very pro-active - he called and gave me the news  then HE called the oncologist and made an appointment for me and had them call me to advise me of the time and location

He tells me this is the Dr he would send a member of his familyy to..

I was working at the time I got the news  and my co-workers and boss are being very supportive -

Also, because of the holiday, Vixdad was home when I got home and we wer able to talk right away

thank you for the prayers and vibes I treasure them -- I am worried mostly about the Vixter --

Hi all.  I just got home about 20 minutes ago.  I like the idea of Super Shuttle but sometimes it's pain.  Because I live so far out of Tampa, I could fly back to Atlanta in the time it takes to get me home.

I don't like to drive home from a trip when I'm already tired.  They are doing major construction out by the airport and I don't want to deal with that either.

I will get Sheena tomorrow.

Good morning, all! My two tasks today are my church job and THE MOST HAPPY FELLA, such a coincidence!

I remember several days in the studios getting the cast to react to things in the dance music, talking to friends who were in and out to record (my goddaughter Charlotte and her mother both have small roles, as do I)

For the record Mr. Moore played the role of the bus driver, Charlotte Vaughn Raines played the little girl, her mother Donna D. Vaughn played Agnes Jones.

Also on the recording in smaller roles Kristin Chenoweth as the Country Girl, HHW's own Sean McDermott played the City Boy and also other HHW's rep players like George Lee Andrews, George Dvorsky, Guy Stroman.

The sad part of this is that Richard Muenz who had this beautiful voice no longer sings. I am not exactly sure of the reason, but musical theater lost a great singer

Back from another long and winding day.  I had a bunch of errands to do, and then a friend and I went to Dino's, which I've been yearning to do since sampling their pepperoni pizza a few weeks ago.  We split a medium pizza (eight slices - but very small slices, rather like a CPK pizza) - we each had four and boy were they great - maybe the best pizza in LA right now.  I then went to the Apple Store and bought a car charger for the phone - very inexpensive and a good thing to have.  Then, and I know this will make Jose very happy, I bought a new pair of running shoes - very nice ones, and they put special insoles in them for me.  Then I delivered a big box o' CDs to a local dealer, then I finally came home.

People here will, I'm quite certain, remember at least one of us trying to spread the Wall-E word around these here parts - and no one was having any of it.  No matter how brilliant I said it was, no matter how hard I tried to get people to go see it, nothing.  Now, with the DVD, everyone is finding out just how right I was - Wall-E is, I believe, the lowest grossing Pixar film, or close to it, and I have no clew as to why, since it's a work of art and, for me, the best Pixar ever.

Once more for the record of the record: March 27-31, April 1-3 and June 18 1999 in NYC at the Clinton Recording Studios

The London sessions were December15-19 1997 & March 3-4 1998 at Abby Road Studios

About a year and have it took to record the show.

BTW--not a peep out of that guy -- at least not that I know of since he didn't sit anywhere near me.

He may have been trying to get thr attention of the crew hoping for an upgrade to "make him more comfortable"

I must admit to being somewhat devious when flying with the Vixter when she was under 2 and it was free - the way it worked was if you had an empty seat next to you  you coul dput the car seat there, if not you held the baby on your lap for the flight - well if the plane was not full and the seat next to me was taken I would just say (very sweetly and innocently)

"Gosh I hope she doesn't spend THIS portion of the trip crying and being sick"

and suddenly the person would have a quiet word in tht ear of the flight attendant and the next thing I would know there would be a vacant seat next to me!

Good Evening!

I'm back from Carnegie Hall's Zankel Hall, and I have to say I was totally WOW'd by Jeremy Denk's performance.  Just even thinking about programming two titans of the Pianist's Repertoire on one recital is daunting enough, but then to actually do it, play it and be able to communicate with the audience so clearly - while showing a true understanding and love of the material - is a major accomplishment.  At first, I thought putting the Ives' "Concord Sonata" before Beethoven's "Hammerklavier" was reverse programming, but it totally worked.

The Ives quotes Beethoven freely and obviously, sometimes with humor, sometimes with irony, other times in honor, so I figured it would go on the second half of the program.  However, by placing the Beethoven second, you were able to see just how revolutionary - and downright weird! - Beethoven was during his time - and still is now.  -And then, as an encore, Jeremy played the slow movement of the Ives again - which didn't seem so "new" this time after hearing the Beethoven.

Needless to say, his pianism and virtuosity was and is beyond reproach, and it was all - to use an oft-used phrase - in the service of the Music, the Composers.  Yes, I was impressed with the speed of the runs, the clarity of the trills, the accuracy of the leaps, but throughout it all, it just all made sense.  And, for anyone who's attempted to listen, read or play through either piece, that really is saying something.

*And I believe DR singdaw enjoyed the recital as well. :)

Yes, a couple of people went and I know it was loved.  But I also remember a whole slew of other hainsies/kimlets who had every sort of excuse under the sun about not going - in other words, there was something about this film that wasn't "must see."  Since it's a brilliant work of art, I have no idea what that something was.

Do we have to go through all of this again?!?!?!

The DRs who normally go out to the theaters to see movies, saw "WALL-E" when it came out.  And, now, those who usually end up watching movies on DVD will do so now.

*And if only five or six DRs actually saw "Wall-E" during it's original theatrical release, then that's still a good percentage of regular DRs who saw the film. ;)

The movie also had a very weird release schedule when it came out too.  It stayed for weeks in some markets, while some places only had it for one or two weeks.

I spent a large part of the evening on those bonus features for WALL-E. "The Pixar Story" wasn't just an hour long; it was 90 minutes long which cut into a large portion of my evening. Anyway, I finally got through everything. In just a couple of weeks, I'll bet there will be an equally large number of bonus features of the next NARNIA film on Blu-ray.

Kudos for Disney doing ALL of the bonus features on the Blu-ray in 1080p. When you're watching the film in HD, it's SUCH a letdown when the bonus stuff goes back to lower resolution.

I think part of the problem with Pixar's recent grosses is just that for awhile, they were the only CGI animation game in town. Now, every studio has a CGI animation division, and Pixar must share the wealth with the other guys. One consolation is that WALL-E did outgross KUNG FU PANDA in the US even though PANDA is much less sophisticated and more kid friendly. (PANDA has far outgrossed WALL-E internationally, however.)

Since I spent so much time on WALL-E's bonus disc, I only had time for two TV programs tonight.

I began with NCIS, a good episode with a charming new rookie who I hope the producers will bring back occasionally. And it appears that Gibbs now suspects who the mole actually was. Can't wait for him to arrest her.

Oh, and there were SEE-lebrity sighting tonight too!

While we were at dinner, it turned out that Ted Turner was dining a couple of feet from us.  -And since we were eating at "Ted's Montana Grill" - which is his restaurant chain, well...  Although, it was kind of funny that he was sitting in a booth underneath the sign for the restrooms. ;)  *And they were out of the Bison Chopped Steak Special tonight too... "Does Mr. Turner know you're out of bison?"  ;)

And sitting a few rows down from us at the recital was one of Jeremy Denk's frequent collaborators, the violinist, Joshua Bell.  -Who's always so much taller when I see him in person.

And I ended my evening with FRINGE. Another intriguing sci-fi "monster anomoly" of the week, but I'm growing less enchanted with the show with each airing. The addled doctor is still good for a few chuckles each week, I must admit.

I always loved the song, "Never Will I Marry."  Judy Garland did a version on her TV show and on the album at the Paladium.  They picked up the tempo a bit so it wasn't quite so much of a dirge, and it ended up sounding more defiant and a little more poignant too.

Yeah, I like versions that add a bit of a hard edge to song - it actually works very well.  Linda Ronstadt does a great cover on her "Hummin' To Myself" album.

Moya was the lead singer of Clannad, and is Enya's sister (or cousin--can't remember which).  Enya has a new Christmas CD out, too.

I really like Clannad and Enya..  Goodnews indeed taht they have a new albumout

She has also done some solo work in Ireland

I've always been partial to Barbra Streisand's "Never Will I Marry."
Tony Perkins made a valiant attempt to sing it decades later on a PBS, or Entertainment Channel, special which was later re-titled "That' Singing" for the home video market.

The thought is in the right place... HOwever ina cold climate a breed like that could have issues. Washington can get cold in the winter but not as cold as here or parts of Canada

*And if only five or six DRs actually saw "Wall-E" during it's original theatrical release, then that's still a good percentage of regular DRs who saw the film. ;)

This is, of course, not quite accurate and a simple perusal of the posts from back then will tell the tale more eloquently than I can or you can.  It wasn't just people on this site (although the majority here did NOT see it back then), it was people everywhere.

As I write in, I think, Kritzerland, one of my favorite Loesser tunes is A Tune For Humming as done by George Shearing on one of his solo piano albums - brilliant.  Tony Walton ended up interpolating the song into his production of Where's Charley - it has nothing to do with Where's Charley and I didn't care for its inclusion, frankly.

Finished with viewing for the evening.  Watched a great little oater I'd never seen.  Tomorrow morning will be a little crazy - must get up early and get the long jog done (in the new running shoes), and then I'm seeing Teddy to get my do done.  So I'll be nice and coiffed for my NY sojourn.  And we've just added Kerry Butler to our merry troupe of Bacharach performers.

Listening to a fantastic Willie Bobo CD, an import, one of those Japanese mini LP things - picked it up for a song - great songs, great playing by Mr. Bobo, and a full orchestra to boot and a handful of nice vocals, too.

We had a limited date with the film. I am looking forwrd to seeing it.. We get five screens for harry potter or someother films and the more interesting ones both artistically and creative ones get a really short run.

The movie also had a very weird release schedule when it came out too.  It stayed for weeks in some markets, while some places only had it for one or two weeks.

WE had it less than a week here...

Well... Next time, take ads out in "Variety" and "The Hollywood Reporter", and run a commercial on all four networks during primetime.  "I'm Bruce Kimmel, and I say, "See This Movie!""

Listening to Bobby Darin singing all the songs from Dr. Dolittle - I had the Sammy Davis, Jr. cover of this, and the Newley cover, but never this one.  It's quite nice, with good arrangements and orchestrations.
