Title: THERE IS A CURIOUS PARADOX
Post by: bk on December 19, 2008, 12:05:42 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you were curious and the notes were a paradox, and now it is time for you to post until the curious cows come paradoxically home.

Intriguing premise.  Thank goodness HOWCO and the WOOLNER BROS. never got around to that idea.  The Woman Eater is a tree that a scientist found in the Amazon Jungle. He also found a native bongo player that kept it active with his music.

How he got it into England and into his laboratory without anyone asking any questions is not revealed in the film.

Until to somebody occurred

But none to beat this paradox!
A paradox, a paradox
A most ingenious paradox!

Oh the weather outside is frightful.....

we had 10.5 inches of snow last night. (On top of the at least 5 inches that was already on the ground) The town is closed...well, the tv said, don't go outside so we have declared a snow day.  I have several clients to call and tell them we need to reschedule, but we planned for that so I have their numbers here.  I do have one who has a pretrial at 3:00 and I don't have his number so I'll try to get out by then.

Good morning, all! It's a very wet day in Southwestern Ohio. A computer guy is coming over today to examine Jo's computer. I'm on Randy's for the nonce but still not caught up on the past two days.

Last night, I had a summit meeting with the estate attorney and my two brothers about their buying out my share of the property. I would be selling my third for a lesser amount I might get if I were to hold onto it, but I have several reasons for wanting to get out of the situation:
  1. I never want to see the Macbeths again or to deal with either of them
  2. I think I'd do better by letting the money accrue interest in an account
  3.  Who knows if I'll live long enough to see the sale?

M was charmless as ever and he's no longer disguising his dislike for me, so it's nice to have things out in the open. Randy and Jo have been fantastic all week and I love beign with them.

More later. I have no Media Report this week except fro the car's CD player:
  Mother Goose
  Babes in Toyland
  Have A Heart
  John Rutter Christmas arrangements

DR Druxy, both of my grandmothers collected antique glass as does my mother.  She's taught me a lot about it.  I am also very familiar with sad feelings when a family piece is accidentially broken, including times when I was the culprit and not the cat.   There are many pieces that can't be replaced or repaired but with a lamp, you can often find a replacement for the shade.  It will still be a family lamp, it's just had an extreme makeover!

I hope your wife finds her shade on the sites I sent. If not, there are lots of sites out there.  I've gotten dishes from discontinued sets through Replacements.com, but I think they just do dishes.  Good luck!

It's me and 1 guest, whom I'll nickname "my shadow."

Me and my shadow
Strolling down the avenue
Me and my shadow
Not a soul to tell our troubles too

And when it's twelve o'clock
We climb the stair
We never knock
For nobody's there

Just me and my shadow
All alone and feeling blue

The gingerbread house went well. It took 2 hours to finish.

We let my niece put on all the candy. She was sneaky because she ate some instead of putting them on the house.

The house itself was not that hard to build. But they show it beautifully done on the package and yet they do not give you the tools to make that way.  Especially the icing. There was no way to do it the way they did since they only gave the icing bags.

But it looks really cute!

OK.  It sounds like an awful lot of work to me - heck, it was an awful lot of work just to re-type it! - but here it is, the recipe for Amy's Bread Monkey Cake:
Title: Re: THERE IS A CURIOUS PARADOX
Post by: singdaw on December 19, 2008, 07:41:21 AM
Amy’s Bread Monkey Cake

Yield: one 9-inch double-layer cake
Equipment: two 9 x 2-inch round cake pans

This is the Amy’s Bread version of a Hummingbird Cake.  We called it a Monkey Cake because we “monkeyed around” with the ingredients proportions and because monkeys love bananas.  We know it sounds crazy, but that really is how we came up with the name.  This very moist, very dense cake is rich with the fruity sweetness of bananas and pineapple.  Toasty chunks of pecan add a nice counterpoint to the soft texture of this cake.  Topped with Cream Cheese Icing, it’s one of Amy’s personal favorites.

INGREDIENTS:

2 ¾ cups unbleached all-purpose flour
2 tsp. Kosher salt
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 ¾ cups sugar
1 ¼ cups canola oil
3 large eggs
1 ½ tsps. vanilla extract
2 cups bananas: ripe, mashed, with chunks remaining
1 cup crushed pineapple, with juice
1 cup pecans, toasted & coarsely chopped

1 recipe Cream Cheese Icing [ see recipe ]

[1]  Preheat oven to 350 F.  Grease the cake pans.  Line the bottoms with rounds of baking parchment then dust them lightly with flour.  Shake out the excess.  Or use Baker’s Joy baking spray that contains both oil and flour, so you don’t have to flour the pan.  With Baker’s Joy, put the parchment liner in AFTER you spray the pan.

[2]  In the bowl of an electric mixer with a paddle attachment, combine the flour, salt, baking soda, and cinnamon and stir briefly on medium-low speed, to distribute the ingredients.  In a separate bowl, whisk together the sugar, oil, eggs, and vanilla until they are well combined.  Add the liquid ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix on medium-low speed, just until all the flour has been moistened.  This should take less than 20 seconds.

[3]  Add the bananas and pineapple and stir briefly, 20 seconds, on low speed to distribute them evenly.  Then add the pecans and mix again on low speed until just combined, scraping the sides and bottom of the bowl as needed.  Do not overmix this batter or your cake will be tough.

[4]  Divide the batter equally between the two prepared cake pans.  Weighing the batter into the pans is the most accurate way to do this.  This ensures that both layers will be uniform in size and will finish baking at the same time.  You’ll have approximately 945.0 g/33.3 oz. of batter per pan.  The pans should be about half full.  Place the pans on the center rack in the preheated oven.  Bake them for 35 to 38 minutes, or until the cake is almost ready to pull away from the sides of the pan and a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out with a few moist crumbs.  The cakes should be uniformly dark golden brown.  Rotate the layers carefully from front to back after 20 minutes for even baking.

[5]  Cool the pans on a rack for 10 minutes, then invert them onto a wire rack that has been sprayed with cooking spray and lift off the pans.  To prevent cracking, carefully right each layer so the top side is up and the parchment-lined bottom is down.  Cool them completely on the rack.  Before frosting, be sure to remove the parchment from the bottom of each layer.  While the cake layers are cooling, prepare the Cream Cheese Icing.  Keep the icing refrigerated until you are ready to use it.

TO ASSEMBLE THE CAKE:

[6]  Place one layer, top side down, on a flat serving plate.  Cut several 4-inch wide strips of parchment or waxed paper to slide under the edge of the layer to keep the plate clean.  Using a thin metal spatula, spread the top of this cake round with a ½ inch thick layer of frosting, leaving a ¼ inch unfrosted border around the edge.  Place the second layer, top side up, on the first, aligning the layers evenly.  Spread a generous layer of frosting around the sides of the cake, rotating the plate as you work so you’re not reaching around the cake to frost the other side.  Try not to let any loose crumbs get caught in the frosting.  Let the frosting extend about ¼ inch above the top of the cake.

[7]  Starting in the center of the cake, cover the top with a generous layer of frosting, taking it all the way to the edge and merging it with the frosting on the sides.  Try to use a forward-moving circular motion, not a back-and-forth motion, to avoid lifting the top skin of the cake.  Rotate the plate as necessary.  Use the spatula or a spoon to make decorative swirls.  Slide the pieces of paper out from under the edge of the cake and discard them.  Store the cake in an airtight container in the refrigerator, but allow it to sit at room temperature for about an hour before serving.

*Notes:

Be sure to use ripe bananas for maximum flavor and moisture, and leave them a little chunky when you mash them.

Use crushed pineapple packed in juice, not syrup, and include the juice along with the pineapple when weighing or measuring it.

This cake can be mixed easily by hand if you don’t have an electric mixer.

Amy’s Bread Cream Cheese Icing

Yield: enough to top a 12 x 17-inch sheet cake, or fill and finish one 9-inch two-layer cake

This Cream Cheese Icing is in a class by itself.  The reason it’s so special is because it’s made with poured fondant instead of confectioner’s sugar.  The fondant gives this icing a smooth, fluffy, very spreadable texture, a silky feel in the mouth, excellent flavor [because the cooked sugar doesn’t mask the flavor of the cream cheese and butter the way that confectioner’s sugar does], and  more stability at room temperature.  It’s the most delicious and foolproof cream cheese icing recipe we’ve ever made.  Our customers love it, and so do we.

INGREDIENTS:

5/8 cup unsalted butter, directly from the refrigerator
¾ cup poured fondant [ see recipe ], at room temperature
3 1/2 eight-oz. packages of cream cheese, directly from the refrigerator

[1]  Cut the butter into 1-inch chunks and put them in the mixing bowl of a stand mixer with the paddle attachment.  Mix on medium speed until the butter is malleable and spreads on the sides of the bowl, 2 to 3 minutes.  Add the fondant all at once, in three or four lumps, and continue mixing on medium to medium-high speed until the mixture is completely smooth, 2 to 3 more minutes, scraping the sides and bottom of the bowl as needed.  There should be no visible lumps of fondant remaining.

[2]  Cut each package of cream cheese into four chunks.  Add them gradually in three additions and continue mixing at medium speed until the icing is completely smooth and has a thick, fluffy texture similar to that of thick whipped cream, 5 to 6 minutes, scraping the sides and bottom of the bowl as needed.  There should be no lumps of cream cheese visible.

[3]  The frosting can be used immediately or stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator until you’re ready to use it.  If it seems too stiff to spread, let it soften slightly at room temperature and stir it again to create a texture that will spread easily on the cake.

*Notes:

An electric stand mixer with a paddle attachment is required to make this icing.  The cold, heavy ingredients and the lengthy mixing time do not lend themselves readily to mixers that use standard beater attachments.

The butter and cream cheese in this recipe should be used cold directly from the refrigerator.  Only the poured fondant should be at room temperature.

Cakes finished with this icing should be kept refrigerated until 30 minutes to an hour before serving time.  Be sure to cover the cake once the icing has set, or the icing will develop an off-flavor form absorbing the aromas of other foods in the refrigerator.

The finished cake can sit out for 2 to 3 hours if the room isn’t extremely warm, but leftovers should be stored in the refrigerator.

Amy’s Bread Food Processor Poured Fondant

Yield: about 650 g/32.9 oz.

At the bakery, we used poured fondant as one of the key ingredients in our Sweet Pink Buttercream Frosting and our Cream Cheese Icing.  This one unique ingredient is responsible for elevating these two fairly common frostings to a higher level of quality.

Poured fondant is concentrated cooked sugar syrup that has been cooled and kneaded vigorously so the sugar re-crystalizes, creating a heavy, doughy consistency.  Stored in an airtight container, it can be kept in the refrigerator for up to 6 months.  When melted to a more liquid state and/or thinned slightly with citrus juice or syrup, it can be used to glaze petits fours, cookies, and cakes.  At the bakery, we use it to make the glaze for our Lime Cornmeal Cookies.

Making fondant from scratch using traditional techniques requires a lot of time and labor and is hardly worth the effort, especially if you use it only infrequently and in small amounts.  Even at the bakery it’s much easier and more efficient for us to purchase large plastic tubs of ready-made fondant from our wholesale supplier.  If you want to purchase fondant, you will have to go to a store that specializes in cake decorating supplies, or call a friendly local bakery and ask if you can buy a small amount from them.  Be sure to ask for “poured” fondant, not “rolled” fondant.

If you have a food processor and an accurately calibrated digital kitchen thermometer, making your own fondant can be a simple, fairly painless process.  The recipe here first appeared in Helen Fletcher’s book The New Pastry Cook, which is now out of print.  Helen, whose bakery Truffes, in St. Louis, Missouri, sells amazingly beautiful pastries, has generously given us permission to use her recipe here.

INGREDIENTS:

2 ½ cups sugar
½ cup water
¼ cup light corn syrup

[1]  In a medium-size heavy saucepan, bring the sugar, water, and corn syrup to a boil, stirring constantly.  As soon as it boils, stop stirring.  Cook the syrup to a temperature of 238 F [soft ball stage].  Immediately pour the hot syrup into a food processor fitted with a steel blade.  Wash the thermometer well and put back into the syrup.  Let the syrup cool undisturbed to 140 F, about 25 to 30 minutes.

[2]  Remove the thermometer and turn the food processor on to process the syrup continuously until it converts from a glassy syrup to an opaque paste, 2 to 3 minutes.  Pour it into a heatproof container, cover it loosely, and let it cool.  When it has cooled completely, seal the container and store the fondant at room temperature for 24 hours before using it.  It can be stored like this for up to 6 days, and in the refrigerator for up to 6 months.

*Notes:

Plan on making this recipe at least 2 days before you want to use it.  It can be stored at room temperature for 5 to 6 days before it has to be refrigerated.

Correct temperatures are very important in this process, so be sure you calibrate your thermometer, or at least know how far off the mark it is, so you can judge when the proper temperature has been reached.  In a pan of boiling water, the thermometer should register 212 F.

Once the sugar has come to a boil, stop stirring it to prevent premature re-crystalization.
Be sure to wash the thermometer thoroughly each time you take it out of the boiling syrup and before you reinsert it into the syrup, to avoid premature re-crystalization of the sugar.

If the fondant has been stored in the refrigerator, let it come to room temperature before using it to make frosting.

It helps to handle the fondant with slightly moistened hands.

Good luck!

My wife says "Thank you" and that she "will keep her chin up".

She says will also kick the cat when she sees her. [No, she won't.]

During my all-night de-cluttering fest, I pulled out some "old friends" that I haven't listened to in a while:

Bach - Cello Suites - Mstislav Rostropovich, cello.

Les Misèrables - Original Broadway Cast... Since I could not find my Original London Cast.

DVDs for the weekend?

I still haven't watched THE DUCHESSS or TRAITOR.

Also, when I was at Costco yesterday, I picked up a 5-movie WHV box set for $16.99: Frank Sinatra, The Golden Years.

It's got a "dog" in it (i.e. MARRIAGE ON THE ROCKS), but also SOME CAME RUNNING, THE TENDER TRAP and THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN ARM.

I remember seeing NONE BUT THE BRAVE when it came out, but I don't really recall much about it, except...

Kevin Thomas of  the Los Angeles Times gave Tommy Sands (Sinatra's son-in-law at the time) such a bad review that Sands went down to the paper and punched him out.

Oh... And catching up from yesterday's Topic O' the Day...

G&T, Gin & Tonic - preferably Tanqueray.  Although, I'm starting to grow very fond of Hendrick's - the extra "notes" of cucumber, coriander, citrus and rose petals are truly, well, intoxicating.

And I still do love my sweet and sour drinks: Whiskey Sours, Amaretto Sours, etc.

And almost anything with an umbrella in it.

You won't lose any of it.  All you really lose is access to AOL's "free online support".  If you need AOL support after you switch plans, then you pay for that on a per-need basis.  All functionality stays the same.  You are only changing your billing, not the program.

*Are you still on the $24.95/month?  I hope you're at least on the $14.95 or $9.95 plans.

Who understands why Spring is born
Out of Winter's laboring pain?
Or why we all must die a bit
Before we grow again.
I do not know the answer.
I merely know it's true.
I hurt them for that reason
And myself a little bit, too.

Has Cillaliz been out making snow angels yet?

Cillaliz was out trying to dig out.  I had a very hard time locating my solar lights that line the walk. I couldn't find one of them.  i wanted to dig them out to be sure I didn't break them by stepping on them.   The road graders just came by....that means I need to go dig out a 3 foot tall snow drift that now is sealing my driveway shut.

I also dug out the ground feeder for the bird family that lives in the bushes at the front of my house.  They were chirping at me the whole time I was shoveling the walk, lol.

I'll go get the driveway open and  get some photos in a while.

I called into the court so now I don't need to be there at all today.

The girls across the street were playing in the snow when I was out earlier and I could hear the kids down the block squealing with delight as they slid down the hill.  At least it's not that cold today  it's in the 20s so it isn't bad to be outside.   I do love this weather and boy do the activity points add up with clearing the snow.

I do have a little snow blower so most of the work is pretty easy, there are places I can't use it, though and that's a pain.  better go do some more digging..

Hozay! Congrats to you, as well, for photo credit! and much joy for your being able to stay home and have them fax you the money!!! Best kind o' job.

Yesterday was a truly lovely birthday - I'm having days of wonderful. Harvested so many lovely birthday wishes from the HHW denizens. Fielded many telephone calls from family and old friends. Received many excellent email greeting. Headed up to Ventura to see my old pals from Juilliard. There was a festive dinner for me - grilled salmon, green beans with pecans, garlic, parsley, etc., smoked fresh mozzarella, a crisp and delicious Villonier, a bouquet of pastel peach roses and a funny card. Then up to Santa Barbara for a truly inexplicable Peter Pan (the prototype for the Comden Green one that everyone loves) - kazillion dollar sets and costumes, flying by Foy, top shelf musicians --- and the bargain basement cast, director, choreographer, arranger, conductor. Oy, vey. We left, whistling the sets. Thence back to Ventura for a triple chocolate mousse cake and herb tea!!! Chuck and I got back to the pad after midnight, and fell quickly into slumber.

Today, one more piece of paper to sign to be completely out from under that condo!! And this evening, my reading!!! Tomorrow, a lovely family partay in honor of my 60th.

(One other wonderful bit of serendipity yesterday - I stopped by Rikki's place on the way north to pick up some candy she needs delivered - and found a birthday card waiting for me from my pal SingSong!! Thanks, SingSong!!!)

This ol' gal feels cherished, I tell ya - cherished!!!

Oh, actually, if you haven't backed up your Filing Cabinet, then uninstalling/reinstalling will do do you no good - since you'll lose your saved mail.

*But if you click on "Help" and look up "Filing Cabinet"...

Otherwise..

-Go to your Applications folder.
-Locate the AOL icon/application.
-Drag it to your Recycle Bin.  -Voila! You've just uninstalled AOL!
-Go to AOL.com (on the web, via Safari).
-Download AOL 10.3 or the AOL Mac Desktop.
-Install. -Just use all the defaults since I'm pretty sure that you did not customize any of your previous installations.

*Just stop worrying about "clicking on something".  There's usually not too many options to click on. Read everything first. That always makes things easier.

If the firms have not attained viability, what ever would suggest they would have the funds to repay the loans?

I went out to shake snow of of trees & began shoveled the steps.  With my wrists I should not be shoveling, but poor Keith is working so hard.  Last night he estimated it would take two hours to do the driveway & a large section of the road.  Now I'm thinking he will be three to four hours.

I'm going to put some wrist supports on and see if I can manage some more shoveling.

Imagine what might happen if THE WOMAN EATER met THE 50 FOOT WOMAN??   :D

I remember the Woolner Brothers.

I pitched them a project back in the 1960s.

They were a step above Ed Wood.

In fact, I interviewed Bernard Woolner for my Basil Rathbone book.  Basil's final film was that beloved non-Oscar-winning Woolner classic, HILLBILLYS IN A HAUNTED HOUSE.

MBarnum or other Bollywood fans - ever see or hear of a film called Om Shanti Om?  Just read a review of it and it sounds rather good.

I saw it at the theater and loved it. It does a great spoof of the 1970s Bollywood films, plus there are a ton of guest appearences of Bollywood actors/actresses old and current.

It is a film that will make more sense if you are someone who has seen a lot of Bollywood movies, new and old, as this film makes many references. But even if you don't get the inside jokes, I think it would still be enjoyable.

"Filing Cabinet" is embedded into AOL, so if you delete your current copy of AOL, you will delete your Filing Cabinet.  -If you pull it back up via Time Machine, you will be restoring your possibly corrupted file of AOL.  However, AOL does let you back-up your Filing Cabinet as a separate file, so that you can save your e-mails "outside" of AOL.  Just remember, that AOL has it's own encryption methods, and Filing Cabinet files can ONLY be opened via AOL.  They are not viewable on their own.

So, Jose - when I read and respond to mail via aol.com - it's not going into my filing cabinet.  It goes to "old mail" but when I checked my filing cabinet neither the original e-mail is there nor my response under "sent mail."  I went to settings but don't see anything for that, and I also pulled down the "action" menu and clicked on move to saved mail, but it's still not showing up in my filing cabinet.

Friday afternoon greetings!  I'm more than halfway through my last day here.  The information-waitressing is going fine and my successor is picking up that routine quite quickly.

I wonder when DR Elmore would like to come over to sit by our Christmas tree and eat Shaddock's pizza?

Soon! Did you get your phone message?

Jo's computer is up and running, I'm tipsy from the wine at lunch, I've seen my dear niece-by-marriage Corby, and planning my evening. All's good!

OUCH!

OUCH!

OUCH!!!!

You mean:

Quote
When Ms. Channing, as the alcoholic society matron Vera Simpson, sings the show’s most famous song, “Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered,” it might as well be titled “Benumbed, Bummed Out and Bored Silly.”

won't make it to the scapbook?

DR Ron Pulliam is correct. The weather in the Carolinas is very spring-like. There was a nice breeze blowing at lunch, but there wasn't a degree of coldness about it. By far the nicest day we've had in two months.

As for this AOL business, I contracted my DSL service from a button in AOL who set me up from day one of DSL with a free AOL mail account. That way I could keep my e-mail address and not go through the hassle of changing to the DSL provider's address. I can also access the internet through AOL if I choose, but IE is faster with fewer windows open, so I prefer it.

OK, time for me to attempt a venture out.  I'm a bit concerned as the girl from next door who was stuck in her driveway now has her car across the street from my driveway making it very difficult for me to get out.  And another neighbor was blowing snow into the street when I came up stairs.  Hopefully he then blew it into the woods so we can all drive around the corner

There were two bonus featurettes: one on The Tower of London and one of Henry's descendants. Both were WAY too short to be very effective.

There were also cast biographies for all the principals (I was VERY impressed with the numerous degrees and musicianship of David Alpay who played Mark Smeaton.) And there was a steo=through photo gallery.

DR MBarnum - Since you store your mail online, you could also just use AOL.com for your e-mail needs.

Well, AOL stores it on-line for me.

AOL is now totally an internet-based service.  The AOL program simply aids in logging you into their site, their servers which is where your mail is sent, received and stored.  You are accessing the same servers whether you log in via AOL (the program) or via AOL.com.  -The interfaces are just different.

You will NOT lose any ONLINE-stored mail by switching to using AOL.com to access your mail.   In fact, if you go to AOL.com, click on the Mail icon, log in, you should see a folder for "Saved Mail" in the left hand column once your "mailbox" comes up.

*And, remember, glitches do happen, so it's always best to archive any important emails on/to your hard drive.  I've heard horror stories of people losing their online content due to some cyber-accident and/or an accidental clicking of the wrong button on their mailbox's page.

I have lost about 5 lbs in the past 10 days but I had intentionally gained about 10 before all this started and that left me about 20 lbs above what I consider "Ideal weight" and proabably 25 to what others would consider my "ideal" so I still have some room to play with before I get too thin....

Five people at the above us are trapped so they have someone working on the road :)  Good for us.  Maybe now it will be fine tomorrow.

We have Craig & Ioana home & all was looking up.  Now Bryan has missed his flight & is in a long line to get another one.  We don't know if he will be here in time tomorrow.

Guess I'll explain all my whining & nervousness. Tomorrow at noon, in a very small casual ceremony, Craig & Ioana are getting married.  If the county clerk can't make it up our road (rather Keith can't go down to get her & bring her back) we will have the ceremony in Lithia Park & meet her there.  It will be very sad if it is just the four of us and Bryan can't make it.

Jane, Congratulations to Craig & Ioana!!

Well, here's one way to spend the snow days...

The Harry Potter Movie Marathon Experience (http://www.clearviewcinemas.com/ziegfeld/ziegfeld-hpmarathon.html)

That's actually sort of tempting since it's taking place at the Ziegfeld.  However, I can't tell if you can buy tickets to all five movies at once as a package, and whether or not you can actually stay in the theater in your seats for the whole day.

DR Ginny - is this day at all bittersweet for you?  Or are you just ready to GET ON WITH IT?    :)

Ginny's packing up
Ginny's moving out...

Yes, I was surprisingly calm today.  I am so comfortable with my decision to retire at this time, especially after a couple of conversations with coworkers today.  Apparently, high-seniority people are getting not-so-subtle inquiries about whether or not they've acquired all the retirement service credit to which they're entitled.  The Library stands to save about $10/hour, thanks to my leaving and being replaced with a younger, non-MLS.  Don't get me wrong, she's a great choice and will do a fine job, but far less expensive than I.

We also discussed quite frankly the new assistant manager in our department, who wrote on my retirement card, "You will be missed - and resented."  No people skills, that one.

What an interesting day.  I spent quite some time setting up the Mail program on the MacBook - now all my AOL mail from my various addresses goes into the Mail program, where it is very simple to access, respond, AND save without ever having to log on to AOL.  The only downside is one cannot port over the AOL address book, although I gather there is third party software that enables you to do that.  So far Mail is working very well and I'm very happy I finally did it - thanks to Jose.

You're welcome, bk.

As for a third party program, well... There are a couple of them out there.  Just Google "AOL address book export".  However, none of them are foolproof, and many of them require you to compose a mail message by filling the "To:" field with your address book, then saving that as a text file, then saving that as a spreadsheet/limited form...

Eh...

A semi-easier way is just to save an e-mail address into your Address Book whenever you receive an email.  Although, bk, if you used "Constant Contact" you should already have a mailing list that you can save as a address book directory file.

Hmm... A text field - with the commas - should work.  Mac's Address Book can import three different types of address book files. Did you try all three?

I skimmed through today's AS THE WORLD TURNS. No Luke but he and Noah were in next week's previews looking very compatible.

Next, I watched a couple of the bonus feature documentaries on the REAR WINDOW second disc. OK, but it's good I already knew my Hitchcock since one of them gives away many of the secrets in his films.

Then I chose my HD-DVD viewing for the evening: LUCKY NUMBER SLEVIN. What a clever, involving little puzzler this was. Really enjoyed it. I also watched the alternate ending (which is more downbeat), and I have to say that I preferred it to the theatrical version.

Next, I put in a movie I've been meaning to revisit for months but hadn't gotten around to doing it: THE SUM OF ALL FEARS. I only got a little less than halfway in when sleep just began to overtake me, so I had to take a little nap.

Frustration grew in Christmasvillagetown tonight as the train service to the Nativity scene is still down, impacting travel on this busy holiday weekend.  Adding to their annoyances, many Christmasvillagetown residents tried using their Matchbox and Hot Wheel cars and trucks to make the trip to the Nativity Scene, only to discover that their vehicles do not have engines and cannot move on their own power.  Residents have been assured that rail service will resume as soon as a light bulb can be obtained from Lloyd's Train and Hobby Shop.

Does anyone have the Netflix player to instantly play movies?   I don't think the DVR that comes with my cable has the ability to connect to the internet.  I think they disabled it, so, I'm considering buying the Roku Netflix player.  Any thoughts?

DR Cillaliz, I'm pretty sure that I've heard from Tivo that users will soon be able to order from Netflix through their Tivo units.

From the little I've read, the quality is not quite up to DVD level of quality (a little better than VHS but not up to DVD). So, if picture quality is important to you, this may not be the way to go.

My problem is that I don't think that will work with our cable DVR.  hmmm  I'm going to check into this.

Well, If you get an HD Tivo, and have your cable service install the cable cards into it, you can use it as your cable box.  I'm planning on doing this in the coming months.

Early day today with astonishing business, even earlier day tomorrow (but, fortunately only four hours), so it's nigh onto bedtime for me.  (I've gotta tell you, Miss Dixie Bell does not appreciate these earlier wake up mornings at all).

I was just looking at that.  I think I'll call my cable company and ask some questions about it

It's a little known fact that Bette Davis' line in THE CABIN IN THE COTTON was originally:  "I'd like to kiss you, but my mercury levels are too high."

Thanks you DRs Cilla, Danise, Singdaw,Jose, George, Laura, Vixmom, Jennifer, Ginny, JRand, TCB, td, FJL, & Dan(theMan).  If I missed anyone I’m sorry.  If DR Penny stops by please let her know the knews-thanks.

Jose-LOL

Dan(theMan)-LOL, boy times have changed.  We gave up on “guest” rooms years ago.

Bryan is on route to Portland, next flight out is cutting it very close.  We shall see what happens.  If need be we found we can delay this for a day but by then the snow may be back.  You would think a wedding with only 5 people would be stress free! ;D

After we picked them up from the hotel we went to the courthouse to get the license.  The woman who will officiate was in & they met her-such a nice, nice woman.  She is not charging for & is doing it as a favor from one mother to another.

Thanks Cilla.  If the plane is not late we just might make it, even if it means getting married in the park to save time.  We picked out a spot just in case.  Of course it can't rain for that one ;)

Well, I have to think about the TIVO.  It would be a lot cheaper to just get the Netflix box for now and if I later decide to go with TIVO, I can always use the Netflix box on a different TV...but not sure.
