Title: WAXING BRAZILIAN
Post by: bk on January 10, 2009, 12:25:10 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the title of the notes is an inversion of the title of a long ago notes, and now it is time for you to post until the inverted cows come home.  They're currently doing the samba and the MOOmbo.

Our GUESTS are reading long ago threads, which I've gone back to and perused, including several days in 2004, right after this board was created.  And I got my first Powerbook and Mac in January 2005.  I looked at the first day's posts on the new board here - very interesting.  And I saw that the merry searchers were here almost every day, right around the time that a certain label folded its NY office and fired everyone.   And sadly I see many posters that I used to really enjoy who simply drifted away, like Emily, Laura II, Maya (always liked her), William E. Lurie, William F. Orr, and a few who left for reasons that are personally annoying to me - Jay and Dan-In-Toronto being two of them - a shame really.  And baffling disappearances like Rodzinski.  Still, we have so many of our regulars still with us and that's just too too amazing.

I am watching a DVD that DR MBARNUM sent me called OSS 117 - CAIRO NEST OF SPIES.

Now it was in a stack of discs that included a CD sent me by DR ELMORE - but I don't think he sent me the DVD....

ANYWAY - it is a very funny French spy spoof that I would highly recommend to all DR's who might care for such a thing.  The leading man is Jean Dujardin and he is handsome and funny....the leading lady is Bereniece Bejo, and she is Bee-yoo-tee-full!

I guess there is a sequel that is in post production.

Well, yesterday was a day.

I went to my office early and did some work.  Then I left and took the train to NYC to meet my DH for a pre-arranged tour of the Armory building at Park and 66th.  It is magnificent - a very important historical collection of rooms.  Lots of restoration work to be done.  And the Drill Hall is one of the largest enclosed spaces in NYC!!  But I almost didn't get in to Manhattan because an earlier track fire shut down all Metro North trains into and out of Manhattan for a time.

After that, I took the train directly to my Amahl final dress rehearsal in Connecticut.  And all I had for dinner was half of a personal Apple/Walnut/Sour Cream pie from The Little Pie Company.

After the rehearsal, I got a ride to the Stamford [CT] train station, whereupon I discovered that due to police activity [someone had been run over by a train], there had been no trains into or out of Manhattan for the past 2.5 hours, and none were yet scheduled. [Thanks for the wishes, DR Jane!]

After a very long delay, I finally made it home - WAY past my normal bed time.  And that was my day!

Today's two performances of Amahl have been moved up by several hours to try to avoid the snow storm that is predicted to start this afternoon.

Carol Burnett to be sure.....but I always thought of her show as a comedy show and sometimes the guests singing was a waste of time.

My favorites:

Ed Sullivan
Tennessee Ernie Ford
Giselle MacKenzie - although her show didn't last very long
Kraft Music Hall
The Hollywood Palace

Good morning, all! Since my adopted son Josh cancelled on me this morning, I slept in and didn't get out of bed untill 9 am.  Last night, before watchng PSYCH, I rearranged some of the furniture and I'm much happier with the look of the apartment. The man objective was to cut down any comfortable guest space so that, next time I'm visited by DR MBarnum, if the weather's too lousy on the fire escape and I decide to let him sleep elsewhere, he has to sleep standing up next to my filng cabinets.

I forgot about MONK at 9 and I missed most of it. That was a bummer because Steve Zahn was the guest star and I think he's a hoot.  As for PSYCH, I love the series, but I thought the episode was a lesser effort.

Today, my walk and a lot of Frank Loesser. Hopefully, my friend Chris will show up later and show me how to deal with this Lacie hard drive, which is nothing like my old one!

I have made it back from Siam.  I made it to the Small House of Uncle Thomas last night before falling asleep (not because of the content, because I was tired!) and this morning picked it up at the Small House and watched to the end.  I must say it is one of the most beautiful films I have ever seen - and the story... oh the story.... yes, I shed a tear at the end.

I'm up way too early - bounced awake at 4, and tried to go back to sleep - abandoned that effort at 5:30 and just hauled my aging caboose outa bed and started sucking caffeine. Got an early (12 noon) art therapy session today, instead of tomorrow - this one with families of the addicts, so it'll be a big group. I'm doing collage - got lotsa glue, but I've been madly cutting words and pix out of the limited yoga and travel mags I have around here. I'll pick up card stock, fallen leaves, some free advertising-type mags on the way - they can cut out pix as part of the session. If I leave here by 9:30 or so, I can hit the 99-cent store and Michael's art/craft supplies before I head up the coast to Malibu.

Tonight is a fundraising effort for the theater org I work for - the other group that uses our theater space is doing a split-the-gate night for us... It's Daddy's Dyin' Who's Got the Will, which will be somewhat amusing. Don't you love farce? I'll go be visible and show my team spirit - even if I'll certainly need a nap before an 8 pm show... sheesh... early to bed and early to rise doesn't make much of a theater-goer!

Just a litttle reminder, DR Elmore. USA does rerun MONK and PSYCH during the early morning hours after their original 9 and 10 p.m. airings. And they'll repeat them during the week at odd times, too, so if you have a DVR/Tivo, check the listings for MONK, and I'll bet you find it.

BK,

DR Ron Pulliam did quote my only reference to Linda Purl during the three days I was working on MATLOCK. The next time you see her, I'd be curious to know why she left the show. Did she not like the working hours? (Hour long dramas typically have nightmarish shooting schedules of 12-16 hour days) Did she not get along with Andy? Did she not feel she was being paid enough? Was it tedious playing the same character week after week? Curious minds want to know if you don't think it would be a sore spot to mention to her.

I watched MATLOCK during the first season, and remember liking her and being surprised when she didn't show up the second year. (I stopped watching regularly after that first year.)

The tenor who sang Caspar for us twice is 6'4 - we put him in a huge tall hat with peacock feathers - he was about 8 feet tall by the time he got onstage. On "Oh, little boy, oh, little boy" he slowly picked up the kid and lifted him to eye-to-eye height -- very sinister. It was great fun!!!

Today I start work on WALKER, TEXAS RANGER, Season 6. Having reviewed the last season, I remember the episodes are filled with fights and chases which make every episode seem so similar. It's also 23 episodes, but they have shorter run times than MATLOCK of ten years earlier, so I should be able to do them more quickly.

I can understand about the voices on THE DARK KNIGHT. Christian Bale's Batman voice has been processed to make it lower and raspier sounding and Heath Ledger's accent as the Joker is also very quirky and unusual. I don't remember having any trouble with anyone else's voice during the film. I will say, though, that the DVD quality reviews for THE DARK KNIGHT were rather scathing as I recall. Poor audio processing on the regular DVD may account for some of the problems you're having, though that's just a guess. The Blu-ray had terrific sound processing.

I remember thinking the same things.  It was really annoying, in a way, that each season seemed to feature a  new "junior Matlock female associate" role over the years.  IIRC, even Shawn Weatherly, a former Miss Universe from South Carolina, gave it a go (oof!).

I'd be amazed if Griffin had issues with any of them.  I don't recall more than a handful of episodes in which that character had  anything challenging to do, though, so it may have simply been a matter of the ladies finding something more substantial being offered to them.

I agree with bk about having trouble hearing a lot of the dialogue in Dark Knight -- but considering DR Matt H's comments, I didn't see it at a theater -- just on DVD here at home, so maybe it is in the audio processing

SPOILER OPINION ALERT for bk since I don't want to taint his viewing pleasure of Dark Knight:

(I know I'm in the minority compared to the critics and general public, but I didn't like the movie.  I felt there was no chemistry between Maggie/Christian and Maggie/Aaron and it hurt what was supposed to be at the core of a lot of the males' actions and motivations.  But that's just me saying ....)

People - including my parents - say "well, what did you do before the internet and e-mail?"  But we live in an age where people expect you to check your e-mail from time to time and to be able to act on that e-mail, so unless someone lives in a vacuum, the internet has changed expectations of others, so it's not just a matter of making believe you're living in the pre-internet time for several days.

DR Miss Karen, I also did not care for THE DARK KNIGHT--in fact, I detest it!  I hated it for its sheer violence and brutality--I felt like I was physically attacked and senselessly beaten up by the time it was over, not to mention left feeling demoralized and defeated.

Feh--give me Adam West over this Batman any day!

I'll write more about it, but yes, The Dark Knight DVD is awful, quality-wise, and I'm sure this was done on purpose.   There's no excuse for a film released in 2008 to have this sort of transfer, and the sound is indeed very peculiar.  In fact, when the swirling smoke and the Batman logo came up at the beginning, there was almost NO sound at all and I thought there was something wrong, so I went to the audio page to make sure there wasn't some weird setup thing - there wasn't.

I found the BD pretty remarkable, aside from some really bad edge enhancement and line shimmer in the opening skyline vista.  It's a purposely very dark film, so contrast is a little spotty, but sharpness and detail on the BD version was great, as was the sound design.  Just my 7 1/2 cents.  :)

I just emailed JR and one of the Farmers that it looks like Hearst is closing the Seattle P-I, the paper that spent decades trashing Frances Farmer, both during her life and then for years afterward.  The author who wrote the spurious fictional biography may soon be out of a job.  Hooray.

Der Brucer and I should be getting the replacement BD of Dark Knight soon.  He's very happy with the Amazon replacement/return deal.

Instead, we've been watching the BD of Get Smart.  I take it Dark Knight isn't as frothy?

Re:  The Smothers Brothers. I have told the story of opening for them many years ago, so you may all feel relieved to know I won't repeat that.  However, many years ago I had an NEA grant to write a musical and the opening number had an interior line (not even the "soprano" part of the piano voicing) in the piano accompaniment that sounded vaguely familiar to me.  I realized months later that it was tonally the same (not rhythmically) as Mason Williams' charming theme to The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour.

Not too chilly.

BK, according to the National Weather Service, the high today in Studio City will be something like 77 degrees.  Tomorrow, the high will be in the 80s.

Do you have any inkling what the weather is like for the rest of us?  Yesterday, we barely hit 40 here in Rehoboth!  And compared to others on the board, what der B and I are living with is downright balmy!

Not too chilly.   ::)  Sheesh.

So...

When I was walking through the Park the other day (hmm, that almost sounds like a song), I heard someone running up behind me, then stop...

"Hey, why don't we run over here today?  Is that OK?"

I turned around and noticed that the man was talking to his border collie...

"Would that be OK with you?"

Then he leaned down and gave his dog a treat...

-And off they ran to the Sheep Meadow.

And count me as another non-fan of "The Dark Knight".  It was just too dark visually, too dark stylistically, and about 15-20 too long for me.  I'm not usually one to complain about too much violence in a movie, but I felt like those set pieces were in place long before the script, story and dialogue had even been considered.

Heck, I started breaking into a sweat yesterday when I realized that the WiFi was not working on the bus yesterday.  No, internet for six+ plus hours!?!?!

Thankfully, I remembered I could still access the interwebs via the 3G network.  Whew!  -But had the WiFi been working on the bus, I could have surfed the web a bit longer during the trip without running down my battery as fast.  That 3G net connection sure is a battery-eater-upper.

Oh... Wow, I seem to be going down ACL Memory Lane today...

When I first did the show with Baayork Lee, it was very interesting - well, fascinating(!) - that when it came time for staging rehearsals, she would bring her original(!!!!) script into rehearsals with her, and we would all sit down on the stage and start comparing the different versions of the script: her original (with annotations!), the rental material from Tams-Witmark (still hate those sides?!?!?), and the published version.  That whole process really helped the members of the cast truly personalize their portrayals of the characters.  Any differences between the versions were strictly limited to some very small "tweaks" - usually just an "a" for a "the" or vice versa, but it would give them the freedom to make these "real people" truly real for themselves.

The libretto was published in England as a stand-alone text in a "making of" book about the National Theatre of Great Britain production of the early 1980s. Its only other publication was in the Doubleday/Anchor anthology of Great American Plays edited by Eric Bentley. Vol 4, I recall.

I think there was a Lorne Michaels SNL/SCTV hybrid that was part live and part taped on Friday nights called THE BIG SHOW.  This had to be about '83 or '84--it was the January that I first got my VCR and I recorded it every week.  It was kind of hit or miss (and mostly miss.)

The funniest bit I recall was a cartoon bloopers show that was hosted by Walter Conkrite

The Smothers Brothers also had a short-lived variety show on NBC during the 70's I remember liking.  They also came back to CBS about ten years ago, but the show was scheduled so semi-regularly that it was hard to find.

And then there were the bombs of MARY (Mary Tyler Moore's variety try) and the Rowan and Martin-less LAUGH-IN revival (which featured pre-Mork Robert Williams.)

The Delo & Daly show was also popular here in OZ.   I'm not sure though if they (Jonathon & Ken)worked together on TV in the USA.

Out into the world, spreading the joy and goodness of the Christmas spirit throughout the year into the hearts and souls of people worldwide.

Wall-E 's song by Peter Gabriel would be first on my list.  The song from the James Bond film is not worthy IMHO.

The same year that SNL premiered, ABC was touting Howard Cossel as the next Ed Sullivan with his own LIVE ON SATURDAY NIGHT (or words to that effect) variety hour.  The only good thing to come of that is a surviving clip of Gwen Verdon and Chita Rivera doing a medley from CHICAGO (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=md2FBmv6VDI).

And speaking of that, what is this thing about Steve Guttenberg jogging without pants in Central Park?  Is it some in-joke that I don't know about?

I think he was looking for our DR Jose and the Reservoir and got lost. Another possibility: a desperate bid to be noticed.

Let's see - I did the long jog.  I then wrote the rest of the chapter (four pages) and then printed out all fifty-seven pages I've done thus far, which I'll go have Xeroxed later this afternoon.  Then I did some errands, shipped some packages, and then I began putting in the Nudie changes and got through all of act one.  I'll start act two later today, or maybe in the morning.  And I still have to finish the long script, too, which I'll definitely do before the end of the evening.

Greetings, gang. It's currently snowing in Chelsea. If the rain they predict comes later in the evening it (the snow) may not be around tomorrow.

I'm listening to Showtime on BBC Radio Wales while the tuna casserole (AKA Tuna Glop) cooks away. It's a good night for warm food. Perhaps we will have a salad with said casserole. We have miniature mince pies or Christmas pudding for dessert. Both came from our friends in Nottingham. We also have a jar of hard sauce. We have plenty to watch (DVD or VHS)after dinner.

It looks like the revival of West Side Story is getting excellent reviews. I'll be heading into Midtown at some point to get my ticket (in the balcony). I also have to get a ticket for Guys and Dolls (and Blithe Spirit). I've been lazy during vacation and now that I have a full week of work back under my belt I must get more motivated. Economy be damned. I will sit in the nosebleed seats as I've always done.

Der Brucer and I should be getting the replacement BD of Dark Knight soon.  He's very happy with the Amazon replacement/return deal.

Indeed! I was expecting a pain in the rear getting a replacment for an opened disk.

Monday  Evening (late) - logged on to Amazon.
Clicked on Return.Clicked on "Ordered by me"
List of most recent orders poperd up wiyj "Return An Item" buttons for each order.
Selected the order.
Selected the particular disc in the order.
Slected - defective disk
Filled-in brief comments block.
Selected exchange
Selected "give to mail man option"
Printed out customized mail label.
Amazon Message siad they'd be in touch.

Tues morning - Got Email saying they would replace the disc ASAP - asked me if that was OK. (Gave me 30 days to return the defective disk)

Wed morning - Got Email saying disk was shipped.

Saturday morning - disk arrived. (And works fine)

Hardest part was repackaging the old disk to return (I didn't have a one-disk box available, so I padded out a 2-disker.)

Can't can't much better than that!

Can we put Amazon in charge of our governmant?

I remember working matinees at the Bruin Theater.  I always enjoyed working the children matinees.  This one was a bit strange, the children tended to cheer the villains.

Often during the matinees several of the cute little girls would visit with me.  I was also a sucker for some of those cute kids without enough money & would add a nickel or dime here and there from my own pocket.

Good Evening!

Steve and I are back from some "sight-seeing" as it were.  We ventured out to the "fashionable" Far West End of Richmond to take a look at all the new stores and offices and housing developments out there...  :-\   I liked it better when most of those roads were two-lane, country roads - and that was not that long ago.

*And after hearing about the "Gorgeous!" new Whole Foods Market that just opened, well, I was kind of disappointed in it.  It's a nice place to shop, but I think the WFM people sorely underestimated just how many people would end up shopping there and how many different "food stations" should have been set up in-store. In this case, bigger would have been better.

I got a latte at the one near our house. Apparently they don't get many orders for espresso drinks, because the whole operation took about 20 minutes. I guess there is something to be said for Starbucks...

The book signing went very well.

One person I met has been a "fan" for years because of my 1-woman Carole Lombard play.  She's going to push to get it staged in an Austin theater.

Thank you, everybody, for the good vibes.

Vibes you make it to the Austin theater!

I'm not a gamer and really don't have an interest in that. I decided I would most likely just use it to watch movies, so I decided to buy the cheaper netflix viewer.  Apparently Amazon is going to be doing rentals soon that you can download to the player too.

Time to cook. My M-I-L is in the hospital and so I'm making dinner so my DH will have something waiting when he gets home. I didn't go to the hospital today because there were already 4 all day visitors: the "kids" and my F-I-L. We're not exactly sure what's wrong, erratic blood pressure and probably a lot of things adding up to her not feeling well.

We planted lettuce in the fall and I decided that now is the time to enjoy it!

Good evening all.  I'm finally sitting down for a bit after a very productive day.  Lots of laundry, kitchen cleaning, and the like.  Also, I finally managed to get started on my 2009 exercise program.  My local YMCA has an indoor track, so I power-walked 3 miles on it wearing Toby in the wrap.  Not a long walk, but with a 13+ pound baby strapped to me, it helped burn some calories.  This is my first step in getting back to my pre-baby workout routine.

And, because I haven't posted a Toby pic yet this year...here are two.

First, a tummy-time pic I took this afternoon.

Friends asked us to meet them in Vegas sometime in April.  As tempting as it is I doubt we will go.

DR TCB did you see this site for deals (http://www.tripres.com/destinations/displayHotels.aspx?cityID=181&dest=Las+Vegas&displayInline=true&gclid=CIn37fXAhZgCFRxNagodd0_IDQ) on hotels in Vegas?

Yes, there are some great bargains in January and February, but because of the play, I can't go until March.

There were 37 pantsless riders in Atlanta, according to the AJC, who dubbed them "the brotherhood of the travelling pantsless".

At the St Vincent DePaul thrift store I came across a load of Arabic pop music CDs and a couple of Bollywood CDs...what great luck! I bought all 38 of them!

I am no set for music for weeks to come.

There goes L.A. in April.

Lets me off the hook, too!

There is a current commercial for Dodge Ram Trucks that is totally annoying.  Of course, since I watch a lot of football I see the commercial about ten times a day.  In this commercial, these two "cowboys are checking out the truck, and the one says, "That is Pretty Fricken Kewl!"

Every time I hear it I want to scream.

Go Cardinals.  I was living in Phoenix when they moved there. I met several of them during my "sitting in and singing with a couple different bands" days.  I remember one of them, I think his name was Tootie Robbins maybe?  Anyway, all he ever talked about was after he retired he was going to go back to St Louis and open a barbeque place.  I wonder if he ever did it

Every once in a while my DH hollers from the bedroom. That's how I know something good is happening in the game. :)

Cillaliz, when they moved here, my DS (then about 5 years old) and I went to a tv taping of a show with Mike Chamberlin about the Cardinals, and I remember that the players were so very very  kind to my little boy. One of them gave him a pair of gloves that he wore in a game.

That's ok, People will just think I'm cheering on the Cardinals for no apparent reason

One of the things I remember most about the Cardinals that year was how nice they were.  They were really gentlemen and I really enjoyed meeting them and talking to them.  The other thing I remember is that I went to a game that was in the middle of the afternoon in either late August or early September at Sun Devil Stadium before it was remodeled, and it was soo hot they were spraying the crowd with water and people where having to go to first aid cooling stations

TCB, I like to stay at the Gold Coast. It's a mile off the Strip (they have a shuttle that takes you over there) and is more reasonably priced -- at least on weekdays.

So really, why is Imperial Palace so cheap?  I mean, it has a great location, the casino is nice - why under $40 a night even in March?

Back from a lovelier than lovely supper with the Jones's.  I gave Margaret the first 58 pages of the new novel, which she'll read tomorrow.  We had a Thanksgiving dinner tonight - turkey, stuffing, cranberry, and peas, with homemade chocolate cake (very light, sans frosting) for dessert.  They showed me some Brit TV show called Little England (I think) - very amusing.  Here is an actual photograph of The Jones's - muse Margaret is on the left.

Well, maybe someone can explain why Photobucket is not copying the link.  It says it's copying the image code, but when I press Apple V it nothing shows up.  Why?  I've also tried highlighting and doing Apple C and Apple V - still not working.  Why?

Good Evening!

Just watching "Saturday Night Live"... A true mixed-bag of an episode.  Neil Patrick Harris has done a nice job so far as the Host for the evening, but I was hoping for a "Dr. Horrible" sketch.  Ah, well.  -And I just have to say that Taylor Swift... well... She must be one lucky girl with great management and PR.  I just don't get her/it?!?!

OH!  But I did love the one special cameo appearance early on!!!!!

bk - Something happened with one of the last Safari and/or Javascript upgrades, and the auto-copying of the Photobucket links doesn't seem to work anymore.  However, the Apple+C, Apple+V commands should still work.  Just make sure you're not accidentally double-clicking the hyperlink, thus deselecting it.  Once you click in the box (once) it automatically selects the link.  If you click again...

And I believe the name of the program in question is: "Little Britain".  -Which now has a U.S. counterpart "Little Britain: USA" - thankfully, produced by and starring the original U.K. team.

Just tried it again - highlighted the image code link, pushed Apple C, tried to copy here - nada.  I guess I'll have to put these in iPhoto, resize, then put them back on my desktop, but what a pain in the ass.

Hey, it did it again today! Is there a time limit for posting here at HHW? I logged on, had been posting and then all of the sudden I'm listed as a guest again, even though my name is still showing on the list of viewers line. So I logged back in again and now I'm Miss Karen again, and not "Hey Guest" ... What's the deal, Lucille? Or BK? Or any DR?

You shouldn't be "timed" when posting - there's something off but I don't think it's anything to do with the board.  Have you checked the "always keep me logged in" box (or whatever it's called?

Karen, at the bottom of the home page (http://www.haineshisway.com/smf) (when you're logged out), there are two ways to log in.  One has the option to specify the number of "Minutes to stay logged in: and a check box that says, as BK said, "Always stay logged in:

But below that, there are some boxes labeled, "Login with username, password and session length" and a drop-down box to specify the session length as 1 Hour, 1 Day, 1 Week, 1 Month or Forever.  That's where I always sign in and I choose "Forever."  Then, I never sign out...I just close my browser when I'm done.  I have my own computer at home and at work, so I don't need to worry about anyone else signing in as me. ;) When I come back to HHW, I don't have to log back in again. :)

~~~Vibes for DR Edisaurus' M-I-L!!~~~
I also miss the "Who's On Line" feature of the board.
There is a link...if you go to the home page and at the bottom under Users Online, it says something like "3 Guests, 2 Users" and "Users active in past 15 minutes:".  If you click on the "3 Guests, 2 Users," it'll show you who's online and where they are in HHW.  It's just not on every page, anymore.
