Well, you've read the notes, the title of the notes is an inversion of the title of a long ago notes, and now it is time for you to post until the inverted cows come home. They're currently doing the samba and the MOOmbo.

And the word of the day is: BATTOLOGY!

Topic of the Day: One of the best variety shows is and always will be "The Carol Burnett Show." ;D

Our GUESTS are reading long ago threads, which I've gone back to and perused, including several days in 2004, right after this board was created. And I got my first Powerbook and Mac in January 2005. I looked at the first day's posts on the new board here - very interesting. And I saw that the merry searchers were here almost every day, right around the time that a certain label folded its NY office and fired everyone. And sadly I see many posters that I used to really enjoy who simply drifted away, like Emily, Laura II, Maya (always liked her), William E. Lurie, William F. Orr, and a few who left for reasons that are personally annoying to me - Jay and Dan-In-Toronto being two of them - a shame really. And baffling disappearances like Rodzinski. Still, we have so many of our regulars still with us and that's just too too amazing.
-
I am regular.
-
Good news on several fronts from DR VIXMOM!
And DR MATTHEW finally made it to Siam.
-
I am regular.
Do we get to vote on that? ;)

DOUBLE DITTO!!!! So many great sketches, especially the "Went With the Wind" parody.
-
I am watching a DVD that DR MBARNUM sent me called OSS 117 - CAIRO NEST OF SPIES.
Now it was in a stack of discs that included a CD sent me by DR ELMORE - but I don't think he sent me the DVD....
ANYWAY - it is a very funny French spy spoof that I would highly recommend to all DR's who might care for such a thing. The leading man is Jean Dujardin and he is handsome and funny....the leading lady is Bereniece Bejo, and she is Bee-yoo-tee-full!
I guess there is a sequel that is in post production.
-
DR SINGDAW did you finally get a train home?

I am regular.
Do we get to vote on that? ;)
[ I should talk, right? :) ]
Uh....let's just go with the consensus of the quorum.
-
Well, yesterday was a day.
I went to my office early and did some work. Then I left and took the train to NYC to meet my DH for a pre-arranged tour of the Armory building at Park and 66th. It is magnificent - a very important historical collection of rooms. Lots of restoration work to be done. And the Drill Hall is one of the largest enclosed spaces in NYC!! But I almost didn't get in to Manhattan because an earlier track fire shut down all Metro North trains into and out of Manhattan for a time.
After that, I took the train directly to my Amahl final dress rehearsal in Connecticut. And all I had for dinner was half of a personal Apple/Walnut/Sour Cream pie from The Little Pie Company.
After the rehearsal, I got a ride to the Stamford [CT] train station, whereupon I discovered that due to police activity [someone had been run over by a train], there had been no trains into or out of Manhattan for the past 2.5 hours, and none were yet scheduled. [Thanks for the wishes, DR Jane!]
After a very long delay, I finally made it home - WAY past my normal bed time. And that was my day!
Today's two performances of Amahl have been moved up by several hours to try to avoid the snow storm that is predicted to start this afternoon.

Jean Dujardin as Hubert Bonisseur de La Bath AKA OSS 117 with his co-star.

AH - I was afraid it was the snow that was delaying you last night!

I guess it was not a very good day for Metro North [or its passengers] yesterday. :-\
-
AH - I was afraid it was the snow that was delaying you last night!
No, just your run-of-the-mill decapitation.
-
Dog signalling that he needs to go out - back later! :)
-
TOD:
Carol Burnett to be sure.....but I always thought of her show as a comedy show and sometimes the guests singing was a waste of time.
My favorites:
Ed Sullivan
Tennessee Ernie Ford
Giselle MacKenzie - although her show didn't last very long
Kraft Music Hall
The Hollywood Palace
-
I was never a big fan of the variety shows, but I recently "discovered" UTube and am really enjoying clips from these shows, particularly ones with Don Rickles, Jack Benny, etc.
-
Finished most of our meetings with the builder and vendors yesterday. Our building supervisor is a great guy.
Yesterday, we went to see GRAN TORINO. Really enjoyed it.
Today is the book signing.
Fingers crossed.
-
Have a great signing, DR DRUXY!!!
-
I am off to work. Oh well.

And the word of the day is: BATTOLOGY!
And The Song Of The Day Is: MY DARLING,MY DARLING
(I'm Charley's Aunt from Brazil-Where the Nuts Come From)

Have a GREAT signing, DR Druxy!!!! :)
Having your finders crossed is important, but cross some fingers, too. ;)
-
Glad to read that DR JoseSPiano arrived safely.

Have a GREAT signing, DR Druxy!!!! :)
Having your finders crossed is important, but cross some fingers, too. ;)
I do that a lot these days.

Good morning, all! Since my adopted son Josh cancelled on me this morning, I slept in and didn't get out of bed untill 9 am. Last night, before watchng PSYCH, I rearranged some of the furniture and I'm much happier with the look of the apartment. The man objective was to cut down any comfortable guest space so that, next time I'm visited by DR MBarnum, if the weather's too lousy on the fire escape and I decide to let him sleep elsewhere, he has to sleep standing up next to my filng cabinets.
I forgot about MONK at 9 and I missed most of it. That was a bummer because Steve Zahn was the guest star and I think he's a hoot. As for PSYCH, I love the series, but I thought the episode was a lesser effort.
Today, my walk and a lot of Frank Loesser. Hopefully, my friend Chris will show up later and show me how to deal with this Lacie hard drive, which is nothing like my old one!
TOD:
The Gary Moore Show
The Bell Telephone Hour

I guess it was not a very good day for Metro North [or its passengers] yesterday. :-\
Even so, DR singdaw, I'm glad you got home and I hope the AMAHL performances go well today.
-
I have made it back from Siam. I made it to the Small House of Uncle Thomas last night before falling asleep (not because of the content, because I was tired!) and this morning picked it up at the Small House and watched to the end. I must say it is one of the most beautiful films I have ever seen - and the story... oh the story.... yes, I shed a tear at the end.
-
I'm up way too early - bounced awake at 4, and tried to go back to sleep - abandoned that effort at 5:30 and just hauled my aging caboose outa bed and started sucking caffeine. Got an early (12 noon) art therapy session today, instead of tomorrow - this one with families of the addicts, so it'll be a big group. I'm doing collage - got lotsa glue, but I've been madly cutting words and pix out of the limited yoga and travel mags I have around here. I'll pick up card stock, fallen leaves, some free advertising-type mags on the way - they can cut out pix as part of the session. If I leave here by 9:30 or so, I can hit the 99-cent store and Michael's art/craft supplies before I head up the coast to Malibu.
Tonight is a fundraising effort for the theater org I work for - the other group that uses our theater space is doing a split-the-gate night for us... It's Daddy's Dyin' Who's Got the Will, which will be somewhat amusing. Don't you love farce? I'll go be visible and show my team spirit - even if I'll certainly need a nap before an 8 pm show... sheesh... early to bed and early to rise doesn't make much of a theater-goer!

Just a litttle reminder, DR Elmore. USA does rerun MONK and PSYCH during the early morning hours after their original 9 and 10 p.m. airings. And they'll repeat them during the week at odd times, too, so if you have a DVR/Tivo, check the listings for MONK, and I'll bet you find it.

Page Two Dance!!!
-
I love Amahl and the Night Visitors - we used to put it on every year (for a whole 3 years) between Thanksgiving and Xmas. What a wonderful opera. I miss it!
-
Good morning!
A beautiful morning thus far though they're predicting rain for later in the day. Doesn't look like it now, but things can change quickly. Cold, of course, but it's January so it's supposed to be cold.
-
Singdaw, are you singing Balthazar? One time, by accident (I guess) we had cast three black singers as the 3 Kings ... "Mother, there are 3 kings... and all of them are black!"
-
BK,
DR Ron Pulliam did quote my only reference to Linda Purl during the three days I was working on MATLOCK. The next time you see her, I'd be curious to know why she left the show. Did she not like the working hours? (Hour long dramas typically have nightmarish shooting schedules of 12-16 hour days) Did she not get along with Andy? Did she not feel she was being paid enough? Was it tedious playing the same character week after week? Curious minds want to know if you don't think it would be a sore spot to mention to her.
I watched MATLOCK during the first season, and remember liking her and being surprised when she didn't show up the second year. (I stopped watching regularly after that first year.)
-
The tenor who sang Caspar for us twice is 6'4 - we put him in a huge tall hat with peacock feathers - he was about 8 feet tall by the time he got onstage. On "Oh, little boy, oh, little boy" he slowly picked up the kid and lifted him to eye-to-eye height -- very sinister. It was great fun!!!
-
Today I start work on WALKER, TEXAS RANGER, Season 6. Having reviewed the last season, I remember the episodes are filled with fights and chases which make every episode seem so similar. It's also 23 episodes, but they have shorter run times than MATLOCK of ten years earlier, so I should be able to do them more quickly.
-
Guess who got to sing the Mother??? Quartet was my favorite part of the show. Four voices building, great harmonies, Penny screaming a high A over the top... magic.
-
Matt - this is quite a duet!!!
-
I see the pay cable channels have some movie premieres on. HITMAN on HBO-HD (not interested) while THE OTHER BOLEYN GIRL on Starz! which I'll probably record (though when I'd get the chance to watch it is another matter.)
-
Matt - this is quite a duet!!!
Isn't it though! I sing bass, BTW! ;D
-
I can understand about the voices on THE DARK KNIGHT. Christian Bale's Batman voice has been processed to make it lower and raspier sounding and Heath Ledger's accent as the Joker is also very quirky and unusual. I don't remember having any trouble with anyone else's voice during the film. I will say, though, that the DVD quality reviews for THE DARK KNIGHT were rather scathing as I recall. Poor audio processing on the regular DVD may account for some of the problems you're having, though that's just a guess. The Blu-ray had terrific sound processing.
-
Saturday morning greetings! The weather is horrible here in SW Ohio today, freezing rain that they say will turn to snow later. This would be a work Saturday for me and I'm so glad not to have to deal with it anymore. I suppose eventually I'll lose track of my former work schedule - wonder how long that will take?
-
Topic of the Day: One of the best variety shows is and always will be "The Carol Burnett Show." ;D
DOUBLE DITTO!!!! So many great sketches, especially the "Went With the Wind" parody.
Triple DITTO!!! My favorite! (The "Sorry" game sketch, too.)
I also remember enjoying The Smothers Brothers, The Dean Martin Show, The Red Skelton Hour, and The Sonny and Cher Show (I always liked her character in the leopard skin jumpsuit, winged glasses and beehive hairdo).

I remember thinking the same things. It was really annoying, in a way, that each season seemed to feature a new "junior Matlock female associate" role over the years. IIRC, even Shawn Weatherly, a former Miss Universe from South Carolina, gave it a go (oof!).
I'd be amazed if Griffin had issues with any of them. I don't recall more than a handful of episodes in which that character had anything challenging to do, though, so it may have simply been a matter of the ladies finding something more substantial being offered to them.
-
Applause for DR George:
It takes cojones, IMO, to boldly state one is ending a Friday by watching "Regis and Kelly". And in the last post of the day, too!!!
:D
-
Time Warner Cable came through and, after we called again late last night to see if they had any appointment cancellations before next Tuesday or wednesday, actually found an appointment for this (Saturday) morning. So I must now go and catch up on posts since late Thursday night.
-
I agree with bk about having trouble hearing a lot of the dialogue in Dark Knight -- but considering DR Matt H's comments, I didn't see it at a theater -- just on DVD here at home, so maybe it is in the audio processing
SPOILER OPINION ALERT for bk since I don't want to taint his viewing pleasure of Dark Knight:
(I know I'm in the minority compared to the critics and general public, but I didn't like the movie. I felt there was no chemistry between Maggie/Christian and Maggie/Aaron and it hurt what was supposed to be at the core of a lot of the males' actions and motivations. But that's just me saying ....)
-
People - including my parents - say "well, what did you do before the internet and e-mail?" But we live in an age where people expect you to check your e-mail from time to time and to be able to act on that e-mail, so unless someone lives in a vacuum, the internet has changed expectations of others, so it's not just a matter of making believe you're living in the pre-internet time for several days.
-
I only dimly remember seeing them on our home screen when I was a youngen, but now I'm a huge fan of THE BELL TELEPHONE HOUR and THE KRAFT MUSIC HALL through the commercially released dvds and private collectors tapes I've seen. There's just something about the way these shows look and sound that appeals to me.
-
Famous (?) line from the play MONEY TALKS, memorably spoken by Helen Gallagher: "Nature abhors a vacuum, and so does my cleaning lady."
-
Luckily, we scrambled and figured out how to get our main email accounts sent directly to my Blackberry. An extremely appealing feature.
-
JRand, glad you enjoyed the French spy spoof. I thought it was great to. I am sure BK will be proud of us!
-
I'll ask Linda why she left, next I see her. Or maybe I'll e-mail her.
-
DR Miss Karen, I also did not care for THE DARK KNIGHT--in fact, I detest it! I hated it for its sheer violence and brutality--I felt like I was physically attacked and senselessly beaten up by the time it was over, not to mention left feeling demoralized and defeated.
Feh--give me Adam West over this Batman any day!
-
I'll write more about it, but yes, The Dark Knight DVD is awful, quality-wise, and I'm sure this was done on purpose. There's no excuse for a film released in 2008 to have this sort of transfer, and the sound is indeed very peculiar. In fact, when the swirling smoke and the Batman logo came up at the beginning, there was almost NO sound at all and I thought there was something wrong, so I went to the audio page to make sure there wasn't some weird setup thing - there wasn't.
-
Listening to Marcos Valle makes me scintillating, not soporific.

I found the BD pretty remarkable, aside from some really bad edge enhancement and line shimmer in the opening skyline vista. It's a purposely very dark film, so contrast is a little spotty, but sharpness and detail on the BD version was great, as was the sound design. Just my 7 1/2 cents. :)

Last night we finally watched YOUNG @ HEART. It is such an amazing & moving documentary. Most moving & beautiful was the performance of FIX YOU by Fred Knittle. To watch Click Here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kg5QBi5tnZU)

DR Jeanne, we have moved many times & I can’t recall having to be present to cancel a service. It might be that the buyers need to have a starting date so the gas isn’t shut off. Did the gas company offer an explanation, such as requiring you to sign off on the meter reading?
-
Is there some sound or music on the Batman logo at the top of the film, or does it play practically silent?
-
As I recall, it played silent.
I'm not a fan of the movie either.
-
Is there some sound or music on the Batman logo at the top of the film, or does it play practically silent?
I'll need to get it out and see, I can't recall. I do remember the film had virtually no bossa nova music in it, however.
-
I guess I'll do the long jog - I'll try to get out of here between nine-thirty and ten. Then it's writing.
-
Hey, it did it again today! Is there a time limit for posting here at HHW? I logged on, had been posting and then all of the sudden I'm listed as a guest again, even though my name is still showing on the list of viewers line. So I logged back in again and now I'm Miss Karen again, and not "Hey Guest" ... What's the deal, Lucille? Or BK? Or any DR?
-
I just emailed JR and one of the Farmers that it looks like Hearst is closing the Seattle P-I, the paper that spent decades trashing Frances Farmer, both during her life and then for years afterward. The author who wrote the spurious fictional biography may soon be out of a job. Hooray.

Seriously, you may have a "cookie" problem. I know I do. :)

Der Brucer and I should be getting the replacement BD of Dark Knight soon. He's very happy with the Amazon replacement/return deal.
Instead, we've been watching the BD of Get Smart. I take it Dark Knight isn't as frothy?
-
Re: The Smothers Brothers. I have told the story of opening for them many years ago, so you may all feel relieved to know I won't repeat that. However, many years ago I had an NEA grant to write a musical and the opening number had an interior line (not even the "soprano" part of the piano voicing) in the piano accompaniment that sounded vaguely familiar to me. I realized months later that it was tonally the same (not rhythmically) as Mason Williams' charming theme to The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour.

Yes, I do! To quote Cookie Monster: "Yum, yum, eat 'em, up!" Actually, it's a sugar problem -- cookies, cake, pie, candy ...
... so it's my computer, heh? And not DR RonnieP trying to curtail my gratuitous posting? I was so sure it was some right-wing plot ....

I've got to make like DR Matt H and go clean a bathroom, a den .... and a kitchen, a bedroom -- well, the entire house needs the once over, and with no Evil Eye knocking at my door, Adios!
-
You shouldn't be "timed" when posting - there's something off but I don't think it's anything to do with the board. Have you checked the "always keep me logged in" box (or whatever it's called?

I adjusted some of the stuff I'd written yesterday, and in a few minutes shall do the long jog. It looks beautiful out, but I just hope it's not too chilly and that the sun has warmed things up a bit.

Good Afternoon!
I'm up, I'm up... Again!

Not too chilly.
BK, according to the National Weather Service, the high today in Studio City will be something like 77 degrees. Tomorrow, the high will be in the 80s.
Do you have any inkling what the weather is like for the rest of us? Yesterday, we barely hit 40 here in Rehoboth! And compared to others on the board, what der B and I are living with is downright balmy!
Not too chilly. ::) Sheesh.
-
So...
When I was walking through the Park the other day (hmm, that almost sounds like a song), I heard someone running up behind me, then stop...
"Hey, why don't we run over here today? Is that OK?"
I turned around and noticed that the man was talking to his border collie...
"Would that be OK with you?"
Then he leaned down and gave his dog a treat...
-And off they ran to the Sheep Meadow.
:)

Well, it's supposed to be in the mid-50s here in Richmond today, while in NYC they're gearing up for a snow storm and temps in the mid-20s. It's amazing what a difference 300 miles can make.
-
And I do feel a bit "sad" that I'll be missing the snow in NYC today, but I'm still not sure how I feel about missing the No Pants! Subway 2k9 Ride (http://improveverywhere.com/2008/12/29/no-pants-2k9-details-for-nyc/). ;D

The Dark Knight replacement disc has arrived, and der B is checking it out as I type.
Yep, it is working fine. Looks great. Sounds great. I'll decide about the storyline later, when I get a chance to watch it myself.
After all, songs by ABBA don't work in every soundtrack.
-
DR singdaw - Glad to hear that you finally made it home last night. I had heard about the Metro-North issues yesterday, and I'm sorry to hear that you were one of the "beneficiaries". ???
I hope your Amahl performances go swimmingly today.

;D

It's practically silent.
-
And count me as another non-fan of "The Dark Knight". It was just too dark visually, too dark stylistically, and about 15-20 too long for me. I'm not usually one to complain about too much violence in a movie, but I felt like those set pieces were in place long before the script, story and dialogue had even been considered.

:D
A few minutes ago as I was reading this, I had to explain to Steve just why I was truly LOL-ing.
:D
*Which reminds me of when the understudy Richie would go on in A Chorus Line...
"My name is Richie Walters.
I'm from Herculaneum, Missouri.
I was born on a full moon on June 13, 1948.
...
-And then everyone offstage and in the pit would mouth, "And I'm white." ;D
-
And then there was the whole Connie MacKenzie alternative/option...
-
WOW! Who knew that the book/script to A Chorus Line was available on Google Book Search?!?!?
-
Next!...
-
Have I mentioned how strange it was to have anticipated being without the internet (and thus HHW) for five days?
-
I'm just recovering from HHW withdrawal now
-
As for the Topic of the Day...
"The Carol Burnett Show"
"The Muppet Show"
"The Sonny & Cher Show"
"Pink Lady & Jeff" ;)
"Barbara Mandrell and the Mandrell Sisters"
"The Starland Vocal Band Show" - I think this only ran and was scheduled for one episode, but since it starred local DC celebs - and featured their hit, "Afternoon Delight", well, it was a must see. Heck, I still remember it. -And, WOW, I just IMDB'd it, and noticed that David Letterman was one of the writers.
"The Donny and Marie (Show)"
-
Have I mentioned how strange it was to have anticipated being without the internet (and thus HHW) for five days?
Heck, I started breaking into a sweat yesterday when I realized that the WiFi was not working on the bus yesterday. No, internet for six+ plus hours!?!?!
Thankfully, I remembered I could still access the interwebs via the 3G network. Whew! -But had the WiFi been working on the bus, I could have surfed the web a bit longer during the trip without running down my battery as fast. That 3G net connection sure is a battery-eater-upper.
-
And what the sadly-short-lived variety show from the late 80's, possibly early 90's... I want to say it was hosted by John Candy. It was one of the first attempts to bring back a old-fashioned variety show to primetime TV. Wasn't it called something simply like "The Big Show"?
-
DR FJL - So, has Mr. Time-Warner man come and gone? Are you fully internet-connected again at home?
-
WOW! Who knew that the book/script to A Chorus Line was available on Google Book Search?!?!?
I did. Me. Yoo-Hoo!
It was a cinch to find it at Amazon.com, too.
That, and a lot of other shows, too!

It was a cinch to find it at Amazon.com, too.
That, and a lot of other shows, too!
I knew the script was finally published a few years ago, I just didn't realize that works still under copyright were available on GBS. -I guess I've spent too much time looking for public domain titles there.
*I'm wondering if the pending (re-)revival of Guys & Dolls will finally produce an official published version of the script/libretto available as a stand alone entity instead of being included in now out-of-print (I think) anthology.

Would Batman participate in a no-pants subway ride?
Well, as long as he has a backpack and follows the procedures listed on the page...
-
Jose - Yes, and this repairman was even OK with the dogs wandering around while he worked!

Here at auditions for The King and I - slow going.... more later....

Oh... Wow, I seem to be going down ACL Memory Lane today...
When I first did the show with Baayork Lee, it was very interesting - well, fascinating(!) - that when it came time for staging rehearsals, she would bring her original(!!!!) script into rehearsals with her, and we would all sit down on the stage and start comparing the different versions of the script: her original (with annotations!), the rental material from Tams-Witmark (still hate those sides?!?!?), and the published version. That whole process really helped the members of the cast truly personalize their portrayals of the characters. Any differences between the versions were strictly limited to some very small "tweaks" - usually just an "a" for a "the" or vice versa, but it would give them the freedom to make these "real people" truly real for themselves.

Just wondering if Jose's upcoming post #36500 counts as a milestone

Welcome back! ;)
-And I'm sure Al Gore would welcome you back too!

Here at auditions for The King and I - slow going.... more later....
Ah... The King & I... My other "dream show" - the other one being Flower Drum Song, of course.
I lost count of the number of community theater productions that I saw while growing up. -All those cousins - real and just friends of the family - to support. ;)
-
Back from the long jog - the weather is indeed glorious - however, I must respond to the old goat (and I mean that in the nicest possible way) :) Up until two days ago, the morning weather has been in the 40s, so yes, it's been a little chilly to run.
-
And now I shall do some writing.
-
Hmm... The pressure, the pressure...
Post 36,500

And after chatting with a friend for the past hour or so, I believe it's time for Steve and I to head out for a late lunch.

If anyone here is interested in the BD of Caligula, let me know. I'll trade/sell it cheap. The film is hideous, but the commentaries by Mirren and McDowell are a hoot and some of the bonus material is interesting.

Have I mentioned how strange it was to have anticipated being without the internet (and thus HHW) for five days?
Welcome back, DR FJL!

The libretto was published in England as a stand-alone text in a "making of" book about the National Theatre of Great Britain production of the early 1980s. Its only other publication was in the Doubleday/Anchor anthology of Great American Plays edited by Eric Bentley. Vol 4, I recall.

I agree with
TOD:
THE CAROL BURNETTE SHOW
ROWAN & MARTIN'S LAUGH-IN
THE DEAN MARTIN SHOW (Sort of)
THE ANDY WILLIAMS SHOW (the one with the bear)
THE SONNY & CHER SHOW
THE SMOTHERS BROTHERS COMEDY HOUR
THE MUPPET SHOW
SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE (first 2 or seasons)
I will add
The Julie Andrews Hour
&
From Canada
Julie (with my friend Julie Amato) I was on it a few times
I didn't care for THE JULIE ANDREWS HOUR when it originally aired because I thought it was rather dry. But years later, seeing a few episodes here and there, I appreciate the musicality of it more.

Carol Burnette
The Entertainers (Dom Deloise and Caterina Valente)
The Muppet Show

I cannot find a single pic of Julie Andrews dancing!

Jose - Yes, and this repairman was even OK with the dogs wandering around while he worked!
I'm surprised you are surprised the repairman was ok with the dogs. I hope the exception are repairmen who aren't ok with the dogs.
Welcome back!

Things are looking up in the princess department, and we may have one or two to read for the King. We also have a few for Anna. Tomorrow is the kids, things may begin to look up.

And what the sadly-short-lived variety show from the late 80's, possibly early 90's... I want to say it was hosted by John Candy. It was one of the first attempts to bring back a old-fashioned variety show to primetime TV. Wasn't it called something simply like "The Big Show"?
I think there was a Lorne Michaels SNL/SCTV hybrid that was part live and part taped on Friday nights called THE BIG SHOW. This had to be about '83 or '84--it was the January that I first got my VCR and I recorded it every week. It was kind of hit or miss (and mostly miss.)
The funniest bit I recall was a cartoon bloopers show that was hosted by Walter Conkrite

And I do feel a bit "sad" that I'll be missing the snow in NYC today, but I'm still not sure how I feel about missing the No Pants! Subway 2k9 Ride (http://improveverywhere.com/2008/12/29/no-pants-2k9-details-for-nyc/). ;D
And speaking of that, what is this thing about Steve Guttenberg jogging without pants in Central Park? Is it some in-joke that I don't know about?

Before the revamped version of the board we used to get messages as soon as we logged on if we had a new pm. I miss that. I forget to check!

Hello. My name is Fred, and I am a HHWaholic.

I wonder what DR Jose found amusing in his story about the man discussing the walk route with his dog.

We watched "Burn after Reading" last night. We found it delightful.

I also miss the "Who's On Line" feature of the board.

Hello the Vixter came home with a big History project that has kept her on the computer - but since she and Vixdad just went to her basketball game I am jumping on to say "Howdy"
Vixdad has spent the whole day so far taking out the old cabinent and rebuidling and rehanging a new one....
I have not yet mentioned to him that the cable remote stopped working (again)....

While I was deconstructing Christmasvillagetown, I put on the TV for some background noise and happened across WHATEVER, MARTHA on FLN. The show is hee-larious. I don't know if Alexis Stewart and her friend are really as snotty as that, but they are damn funny as they dis on Martha's doings.
Why isn't this show on during daytime TV?

I loved the Perry Como show when I was a kid.
-
Thanks for all the welcome back's.
It almost even feels like I was only gone 36 hours.
-
Well there were a variety of Comediens on Laugh In!
-
Of course I just make an assumption of TOTD from other people's responses!
-
The Smothers Brothers also had a short-lived variety show on NBC during the 70's I remember liking. They also came back to CBS about ten years ago, but the show was scheduled so semi-regularly that it was hard to find.
And then there were the bombs of MARY (Mary Tyler Moore's variety try) and the Rowan and Martin-less LAUGH-IN revival (which featured pre-Mork Robert Williams.)
-
They wrote about LAUGH-IN in Variety, if I recall correctly.
-
Christmasvillagetown is being destructed?!!!! Where will the citizens go?!
To the main public library in the nearest big city!

The Delo & Daly show was also popular here in OZ. I'm not sure though if they (Jonathon & Ken)worked together on TV in the USA.
-
Christmasvillagetown is being destructed?!!!! Where will the citizens go?!
Out into the world, spreading the joy and goodness of the Christmas spirit throughout the year into the hearts and souls of people worldwide.
(or packed into cardboard boxes and stuffed into the attic. It depends on whether you are old enough to know...)

There were poems and songs on Laugh In!

Loved loved loved The Hudson Brothers, and also The Bill Cosby Show which featured Lola Falana

All of our Christmas decorations are packed away, except for the angel collection. That can wait until Monday.

I have yet to put away Christmas decorations! (I just store the tree in a cupboard each year - as is! No it's not a real tree).
I wonder if they have snow in Portland OR?

Any suggestions out there for songs that will be nominated for Oscars?
Wall-E 's song by Peter Gabriel would be first on my list. The song from the James Bond film is not worthy IMHO.

I guess "Thank You For The Music" is a possibility from MAMMA MIA.

The same year that SNL premiered, ABC was touting Howard Cossel as the next Ed Sullivan with his own LIVE ON SATURDAY NIGHT (or words to that effect) variety hour. The only good thing to come of that is a surviving clip of Gwen Verdon and Chita Rivera doing a medley from CHICAGO (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=md2FBmv6VDI).

Let's see - I did the long jog. I then wrote the rest of the chapter (four pages) and then printed out all fifty-seven pages I've done thus far, which I'll go have Xeroxed later this afternoon. Then I did some errands, shipped some packages, and then I began putting in the Nudie changes and got through all of act one. I'll start act two later today, or maybe in the morning. And I still have to finish the long script, too, which I'll definitely do before the end of the evening.
-
OMG, that must be some lonnnng script. Wasn't that being read even before I lost my internet connection?

Greetings, gang. It's currently snowing in Chelsea. If the rain they predict comes later in the evening it (the snow) may not be around tomorrow.
I'm listening to Showtime on BBC Radio Wales while the tuna casserole (AKA Tuna Glop) cooks away. It's a good night for warm food. Perhaps we will have a salad with said casserole. We have miniature mince pies or Christmas pudding for dessert. Both came from our friends in Nottingham. We also have a jar of hard sauce. We have plenty to watch (DVD or VHS)after dinner.
It looks like the revival of West Side Story is getting excellent reviews. I'll be heading into Midtown at some point to get my ticket (in the balcony). I also have to get a ticket for Guys and Dolls (and Blithe Spirit). I've been lazy during vacation and now that I have a full week of work back under my belt I must get more motivated. Economy be damned. I will sit in the nosebleed seats as I've always done.

Dieting may impede your body’s ability to fight off the flu. Researchers at Michigan State found that the old wives’ tale of “feed a cold and starve a fever” is just that—an old wives’ tale. A study found that dieting robs the body of its ability to produce vital killer cells need to fight infections, including flu.

Der Brucer and I should be getting the replacement BD of Dark Knight soon. He's very happy with the Amazon replacement/return deal.
Indeed! I was expecting a pain in the rear getting a replacment for an opened disk.
Monday Evening (late) - logged on to Amazon.
Clicked on Return.Clicked on "Ordered by me"
List of most recent orders poperd up wiyj "Return An Item" buttons for each order.
Selected the order.
Selected the particular disc in the order.
Slected - defective disk
Filled-in brief comments block.
Selected exchange
Selected "give to mail man option"
Printed out customized mail label.
Amazon Message siad they'd be in touch.
Tues morning - Got Email saying they would replace the disc ASAP - asked me if that was OK. (Gave me 30 days to return the defective disk)
Wed morning - Got Email saying disk was shipped.
Saturday morning - disk arrived. (And works fine)
Hardest part was repackaging the old disk to return (I didn't have a one-disk box available, so I padded out a 2-disker.)
Can't can't much better than that!

I tallied up the points and it really wasn't that bad.

I remember working matinees at the Bruin Theater. I always enjoyed working the children matinees. This one was a bit strange, the children tended to cheer the villains.
Often during the matinees several of the cute little girls would visit with me. I was also a sucker for some of those cute kids without enough money & would add a nickel or dime here and there from my own pocket.

Good Evening!
Steve and I are back from some "sight-seeing" as it were. We ventured out to the "fashionable" Far West End of Richmond to take a look at all the new stores and offices and housing developments out there... :-\ I liked it better when most of those roads were two-lane, country roads - and that was not that long ago.
*And after hearing about the "Gorgeous!" new Whole Foods Market that just opened, well, I was kind of disappointed in it. It's a nice place to shop, but I think the WFM people sorely underestimated just how many people would end up shopping there and how many different "food stations" should have been set up in-store. In this case, bigger would have been better.
-
DR Cillaliz, with an XBox you get to be able to play LEFT FOR DEAD (my nephew raves about it.)

And now we're heading out for dinner. -Just had to drop off some of the groceries and wine and beer we bought while we were out earlier.

Time to cook. My M-I-L is in the hospital and so I'm making dinner so my DH will have something waiting when he gets home. I didn't go to the hospital today because there were already 4 all day visitors: the "kids" and my F-I-L. We're not exactly sure what's wrong, erratic blood pressure and probably a lot of things adding up to her not feeling well.
We planted lettuce in the fall and I decided that now is the time to enjoy it!
-
Exactly when did Las Vegas become a legit travel destination? Back when I was a travel agent (Chris Columbus couldn't figure out which cruise ship to take, so he took all three), Las Vegas and / or Reno were practically throw away package trips to sell. They were so cheap, that we didn't make any money off of them. Now, round trip air and four nights in a lower class hotel is over $600.00.

DR Edi, VIBES FOR YOUR DMIL!
-
DR TCB I believe the prices for Vegas changed when it became a family location. Now if you are a big gambler you can get your room compt at nice hotel. ;)

I finished the long script. Whew! So unwieldy. I shall now be on my way to Xerox book pages for muse Margaret, and then I shall go directly to their home environment, after which I shall return.

I wish we had a camera, the moon is absolutely gorgeous!

Good evening all. I'm finally sitting down for a bit after a very productive day. Lots of laundry, kitchen cleaning, and the like. Also, I finally managed to get started on my 2009 exercise program. My local YMCA has an indoor track, so I power-walked 3 miles on it wearing Toby in the wrap. Not a long walk, but with a 13+ pound baby strapped to me, it helped burn some calories. This is my first step in getting back to my pre-baby workout routine.
And, because I haven't posted a Toby pic yet this year...here are two.
First, a tummy-time pic I took this afternoon.
and his "official" 4 month picture, for the month-by-month series I am doing

Thank you, TCB!

Have you checked Allegiant Air? From Medford we can fly each way for $29-$79 depending on the day.

Sorry.

Toby gets cuter every day. He is just darling. I love the month by month, side by side photos.
DR Ann, a 3 mile power walk with a baby, I think you are off to a great start!

Re riding the subway without pants.
Ewwww.

Awww, Toby is adorable. Thanks for posting the photo, Ann. And keep them coming.

I wish we had a camera, the moon is absolutely gorgeous!
I thought I emailed Keith and told him to get you a camera for Christmas.

I need to get back into my exercise program again. this past week was so busy and with the burn being an open sore most of the week, I didn't want to go to use the machines at curves and pick up who knows what kind of germs. It's healing nicely, well if an ugly old scab and dry red skin is nice....time to get busy again

I thought I emailed Keith and told him to get you a camera for Christmas.
You did & he did get me one for my birthday. We used it to take photos of the wedding & Christmas celebrations. Then he gave it to Craig & said he would get us a better camera. I'm still waiting-lol. The reason we were without a camera until my birthday was Bryan needed a better camera for his trip through the Rockies. We are too good to our children ;)
-

I bet the local paper will have some pretty photos. I will look for them. Really cool would have been the view through the telescope. The moon rising over the mountains with the trees framing it would have been lovely. I'm sorry to tease you & then not have a camera. I called all two of our neighbors & they couldn't help.
-
I'm watching a commercial for the Slap Chop and the guy just said "You are going to love my nuts" LOL
-
DR FJL - so great to have you back.

Wise move to not take any chances.

DR PennyO - hilarious Amahl stories. I have at one time or another over the years sung each of the three King roles. We once had 3 white kings, so they changed the line, at my expense, to:
"The kings are three - and one of them is FAT!" :)
-
(The "Sorry" game sketch, too.)
I was so obssessed with this that I tape recorded the audio from the television, typed up a transcript, and forced my friends to act out the whole thing in front of our class for the talent show.
How gay is that? ;)
-
DR JoseSPiano - I think that there were at least three episodes of The Starland Vocal Band show, because I remember watching them. :)
-
***GET WELL VIBES***
for DR Edi's Mother-In-Law!!!!

The opera performances went fine, and I got home safely in the light snow. And now I'm pooped and ready for bed!

Interesting...South Sioux City, NE High School is doing CURTAINS in March. I can't imagine that. A part of me wants to see it a part of me is terrified of what it would be like to see a 17 year old Carmen Bernstein talking to her 15 year old daughter Bambi
-
At the St Vincent DePaul thrift store I came across a load of Arabic pop music CDs and a couple of Bollywood CDs...what great luck! I bought all 38 of them!
I am no set for music for weeks to come.

I am glad I'm not home all the time. I have found many of the products being sold on the infomercials and commercials quite enticing. Good grief. I considered buying 2 rugs from SNBC, some mend it stuff and 3 or 4 other things. I did find those double door draft blockers at Staples today and gave in....I think it may actually work!

I just saw the twin draft guard commercial. They had it at Staples for 9.99

Today we saw the tour of "The Lion King." Again. It was part of the season ticket package a couple of years ago, then, too.

I had a nice 6 mile walk before the rain arrived. It was probably my only chance to do that this week since it's going to be cold and rainy most of the week.
-
I see from my newspaper online that people here rode the new light-rail pantsless, too.
I am glad we drove to the theater.
-
Our new light rail has had two accidents in the first ten days of operation.

Thanks for all the MIL vibes. My DH is home and we had a lovely dinner, with extra roasted potatoes with rosemary and red and green peppers left over for breakfast. Yummmmmmers.

DR TCB I believe the prices for Vegas changed when it became a family location. Now if you are a big gambler you can get your room compt at nice hotel. ;)

Dang! They DID! And I missed it! And I walked right by the train station, too.

"On Saturday January 12th, 2008 nearly 2,000 people took off their pants on subways in 10 cities around the world. In New York’s 7th Annual No Pants! Subway Ride we had around 900 participants, spread out over three subway lines. Enjoy the videos first and then go behind the scenes with our mission report and photos."
What must the world think of us now. ::)

If you get tired of carpets, look up. There are great ceilings, too.

Hooray, my Lacie hard drive is working and I now have backed up my computer, thanks to my friend Chris. I took him to Artie's to thank him for his assistance. We then went to Barnes and Noble where I bought the complete Sherlock Holmes; my annotated edition is too clunkyand heavy for comfortable reading. The store was having a "buy 2 B&N titles, get one free" offer so Chris got a free copy of "Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass out of the deal.

Yes, there are some great bargains in January and February, but because of the play, I can't go until March.

There were 37 pantsless riders in Atlanta, according to the AJC, who dubbed them "the brotherhood of the travelling pantsless".

There is a current commercial for Dodge Ram Trucks that is totally annoying. Of course, since I watch a lot of football I see the commercial about ten times a day. In this commercial, these two "cowboys are checking out the truck, and the one says, "That is Pretty Fricken Kewl!"
Every time I hear it I want to scream.
-
G'night!

Go Cardinals. I was living in Phoenix when they moved there. I met several of them during my "sitting in and singing with a couple different bands" days. I remember one of them, I think his name was Tootie Robbins maybe? Anyway, all he ever talked about was after he retired he was going to go back to St Louis and open a barbeque place. I wonder if he ever did it
-
Sorry, Cillaliz. I deleted my post after TCB signed off. I figured he didn't see it and no one else would care.
-
Every once in a while my DH hollers from the bedroom. That's how I know something good is happening in the game. :)
-
Cillaliz, when they moved here, my DS (then about 5 years old) and I went to a tv taping of a show with Mike Chamberlin about the Cardinals, and I remember that the players were so very very kind to my little boy. One of them gave him a pair of gloves that he wore in a game.
-

That's ok, People will just think I'm cheering on the Cardinals for no apparent reason

One of the things I remember most about the Cardinals that year was how nice they were. They were really gentlemen and I really enjoyed meeting them and talking to them. The other thing I remember is that I went to a game that was in the middle of the afternoon in either late August or early September at Sun Devil Stadium before it was remodeled, and it was soo hot they were spraying the crowd with water and people where having to go to first aid cooling stations

TCB - Some nice room deals at Bally's in March if you can go Sun through Thurs. We loved Bally's, it was so convenient.
http://www.ballyslasvegas.com/AvailabilityCalendar.do?propCode=BLV&showHotDeal=Y
Likewise the Imperial Palace, from $35 to $39 even in March. we haven't staye dthere, but my Mom really enjoyed the casino there.

OH, OH, OH......they just won!!! Woo Hoo!! Go Cards!
-
I am stunned.
I opened the front door and hollered "Whoo hoo!"
-
TCB, I like to stay at the Gold Coast. It's a mile off the Strip (they have a shuttle that takes you over there) and is more reasonably priced -- at least on weekdays.
-
So really, why is Imperial Palace so cheap? I mean, it has a great location, the casino is nice - why under $40 a night even in March?
-
It's old.

Back from a lovelier than lovely supper with the Jones's. I gave Margaret the first 58 pages of the new novel, which she'll read tomorrow. We had a Thanksgiving dinner tonight - turkey, stuffing, cranberry, and peas, with homemade chocolate cake (very light, sans frosting) for dessert. They showed me some Brit TV show called Little England (I think) - very amusing. Here is an actual photograph of The Jones's - muse Margaret is on the left.
Well, maybe someone can explain why Photobucket is not copying the link. It says it's copying the image code, but when I press Apple V it nothing shows up. Why? I've also tried highlighting and doing Apple C and Apple V - still not working. Why?
-
Good Evening!
Just watching "Saturday Night Live"... A true mixed-bag of an episode. Neil Patrick Harris has done a nice job so far as the Host for the evening, but I was hoping for a "Dr. Horrible" sketch. Ah, well. -And I just have to say that Taylor Swift... well... She must be one lucky girl with great management and PR. I just don't get her/it?!?!
OH! But I did love the one special cameo appearance early on!!!!!
-
bk - Something happened with one of the last Safari and/or Javascript upgrades, and the auto-copying of the Photobucket links doesn't seem to work anymore. However, the Apple+C, Apple+V commands should still work. Just make sure you're not accidentally double-clicking the hyperlink, thus deselecting it. Once you click in the box (once) it automatically selects the link. If you click again...
-
And I believe the name of the program in question is: "Little Britain". -Which now has a U.S. counterpart "Little Britain: USA" - thankfully, produced by and starring the original U.K. team.
-
I've tried it every way you can try it and it won't copy. Weird.
-
Just tried it again - highlighted the image code link, pushed Apple C, tried to copy here - nada. I guess I'll have to put these in iPhoto, resize, then put them back on my desktop, but what a pain in the ass.
-
And...
Goodnight.

And, once again...
Goodnight.

Back from the latest concert in the series I organized, this one with incredible vocalist Linda Hornbuckle and Grammy nominated Janice Scroggins. They brought the house down.

TOD:
THE MUPPET SHOW
I LOVE "The Muppet Show"!
-
The Manhattan Transfer also had a 4-episode summer variety show in the 1970s. I never saw it on TV, but I have seen clips on YouTube. :)
-
Would Batman participate in a no-pants subway ride?
One can only hope. ;)
-
Okay...wishful thinking.
;D
-
Glad it worked for Jose, but it certainly isn't working for me. I wonder if Jose changed a setting once the Safari update happened?
-
Listening to the next Kritzerland release - I love it.

Or BK? Or any DR?
You shouldn't be "timed" when posting - there's something off but I don't think it's anything to do with the board. Have you checked the "always keep me logged in" box (or whatever it's called?
Karen, at the bottom of the home page (http://www.haineshisway.com/smf) (when you're logged out), there are two ways to log in. One has the option to specify the number of "Minutes to stay logged in: and a check box that says, as BK said, "Always stay logged in:
But below that, there are some boxes labeled, "Login with username, password and session length" and a drop-down box to specify the session length as 1 Hour, 1 Day, 1 Week, 1 Month or Forever. That's where I always sign in and I choose "Forever." Then, I never sign out...I just close my browser when I'm done. I have my own computer at home and at work, so I don't need to worry about anyone else signing in as me. ;) When I come back to HHW, I don't have to log back in again. :)
-
Time to cook.

AARRGGHH!! I wanted to watch this and forgot to set my DVR. :P
-
I also miss the "Who's On Line" feature of the board.
There is a link...if you go to the home page and at the bottom under Users Online, it says something like "3 Guests, 2 Users" and "Users active in past 15 minutes:". If you click on the "3 Guests, 2 Users," it'll show you who's online and where they are in HHW. It's just not on every page, anymore.
