Well, you've read the notes, the notes had no rest, and now it is time for you to post until the Sunday cows come home.

And the word of the day is: AMELIORATE!

The very first time that I ever heard this word was in A Little Night Music:

Ordinary daughters ameliorate their lot,
Use their charms and choose their futures,
Breed their children, heed their mothers.
Ordinary daughters, which mine, I fear, is not,
Tend each asset, spend it wisely
While it still endures--
Mine tours!

Today will be a busy day for me.  I'm working backstage at the Washington Center for the Performing Arts (http://www.washingtoncenter.org/) for the tour of Moving Out (http://www.broadwaymusicalhome.com/shows/movinout.htm).  I'll be helping the wardrobe people.  Tour shows are more often scheduled during the week (and I have to use vacation time from my regular job to work on them), so it's nice to have one on the weekend when I don't work. :) Here's the poster:

Soon I'll have to head outside to find out what the storm has wrought overnight.  And determine if I shall be heading to church by car or by train.

She is most assuredly in the lefthand space in the photo I see.

True, she's to the right of the gent beside her...but he's on the right side of the photo.

Since photo identification is done Left to Right, BK identified her position correctly.

DR Ron Pulliam - hope you're not up at this hour because you're feeling miserable.

Misery loves company....

But no...I'm up at this hour because I've been sleeping and sleeping.  And I'm getting "ready" to sleep  some more.

I think the better question, DR singdaw, is why YOU'RE up at his hour.

Yes, I hate it when your sleep "cycle" gets all tossed and turned about.  But I'm sure your body will let you know what it needs.

Like, for instance, chocolate cake.     :)

Good morning...briefly...

DR Jose, I thought the same thing when Taylor Swift started singing. I mean, she looked good, but other than that...

I also thought it was funny when she stopped strumming her glittery guitar and you didn't hear it drop out. Perhaps it was because of the other 3(!) guitarists backing her up!

I loved Neil Patrick Harris playing the DOOGIE HOUSER theme. I'm afraid I dozed through some of it and just missed Liza. I saw the back of her as she exited and thought that it looked like her. Then I was awake at the end when he thanked her and realized that I had indeed missed her.

I saw NPH in CABARET years ago and thought he was great! (Debbie Gibson, however...)

There's not a lot more to do in Austin this trip.

We've got an appointment at Direct Buy today in the early afternoon to see what they have to offer, then unless wife Sandy wants to set up a couple more appointments with vendors on Monday, we're pretty much finished.

At this point, nothing is scheduled for Monday except a brief trip to the post office.

Our plane home leaves around 8:30 Tuesday morning, so we'll be back in Los Angeles for lunch.

Times look good for quality small-cast shows, at least outside of NYC and L.A.

(Just a very strong feeling, no concrete evidence to support that, but after seeing a roundtable discussion on NY1 about the need to cut costs and production values without sacrificing theatricality and quality, it does seem so with regionals right now.)

Well, they do have that priest crossover with "Home sweet home" counterpoint and the rowing music leading into "Happy Tune." Remind them there are no small parts.

I'm telling you, folks. When you get used to seeing a bunch of friends every day, and then they're no longer there, it's very upsetting. DSL just had a major burp, I guess, and the connection was so slow that pages would time out before they could load. I could access my AOL e-mail, and thanks to those I wrote who lent a sympathetic ear to my plight.

And just to let you know about my priorities, the first place I came to when my full DSL signal was restored was not my place of business but my place of friendship: HHW.

As is often the case with movies, I'll be in the minority here to say that I liked THE DARK KNIGHT very much, more the second time through. Like BATMAN BEGINS, I felt on first viewing that the pieces of the film seemed a bit disconnected from one another, but watching it a second time, I could better appreciate the construction of the film and its impact. I found THE DARK KNIGHT psychologically powerful, burrowing into my consciousness with a razor-like precision that was troubling. To be honest, there was really too much of the Joker for me and not enough Batman, but again, I understood the reasoning behind it, just not what I personally wanted.

The BD is pretty sensational. For those who don't know, the scenes filmed in IMAX have a different aspect ratio on the BD (the DVD retains the 2.40 ratio consistently) from the rest of the film, and they're so involving that they pull you into the movie, the sharpness so spectacular in those scenes that they make your teeth hurt.

Well, I remember that during the Broadway run, some of the dressers were on "sweat" patrol.  They stood in the wings with towels ready to wipe people down - especially arms and necks - due to all the partnering work they had to do.  No slippage!

Hello, everyone.

Speaking of no rest on Sunday, well, that's me, too. Matt keeps telling me it's the 11th hour; I insist it's not quite, but the truth is that there's still a lot to do to get ready for the movers.

Jane, the gas company gave no explanation--the rep I spoke to was quite useless (yes, TCB, it is USELESS this time!)--so I checked the website. I keep thinking I'm the owner of this house--I forget I'm just a renter now. That may make a difference. Perhaps the buyers, ie the NEW owners, call they'll get different treatment. After all, if you're leaving the state on Monday, just HOW are you supposed to be there all day on Tuesday to let them in??? One must keep one's sense of humor, after all.

DR Jeanne - You're leaving the state on Monday?  As in tomorrow?!?!?

*Do you happen to know if the new owners will be using the same utility companies? -Although, I suspect they have no choice in the matter.  I'm pretty sure that if they call and request new service, then it's "simply" a matter of changing the billing.  It sounds like the gas company is assuming that the premises will be vacated and that no gas service will be needed until further notice. -Then they would need someone there to let them into the house to insure that any gas connections inside the house are turned off. You may end up saving the gas company a service call - as well as the new owners a few days without gas service - if you "suggest" to the new owners that they get their utilities set up before the move in (that is, of course, if they haven't done so already).

No, Jose, not tomorrow. I've got a couple weeks left. I rearrranged my plans so the move wouldn't fall on Inauguration Day. Given the bridge and road closings, I think it might be quite impossible to get anywhere then.

Yes, the new owners will be using the same gas company. They asked me for the phone numbers of various utility companies so they can make the arrangements, so they are on top of things that way. We also agreed to not turn the uts off--just change the name. I suspect, like you said, the rep was assuming that the place would be vacant or something. I'll call tomorrow; it may be a simple matter to clear up--but with another rep. I could get nowhere with the one I spoke to.

Yes, FJL, I did.  Thank you.  I had a friend who stayed at the Imperial Palace, and he said the only thing older than the hotel were the bedbugs, the cockroaches, and the staff.  LOL.

Actually, I don't want to be on the Strip, which is why I thought it would be cheaper.  My friends live in Henderson.  The Sunset Station, is near their house and is a very nice resort.  In November they had some $28.00 rooms, so I was hoping for the same.  Apparently, once you get past the 15th of March, you get into Spring Break time.

I guess that reputation explains the low prices at the Imperial palace.

But after staying at Bally's, I can't figure out the low low prices available at times there, unless it's just that Bally's is a very nice well-run hotel without an exotic theme.

Back from the long jog.  A stunning day out.  I ran more briskly than usual because I found yet another old pair of jean cutoffs - the ones I was wearing (the third pair during this diet) were making it very difficult to jog properly since they were literally falling off and I'd have to hike them up ever other minute.  I haven't had on these jean shorts I found today since around 1994.  I was actually shocked I got into them and they're not even that tight.

It sounds like fun.  Will you also get to see the show?  I loved it.

Rarely, when I work a show, do I actually get to watch it.  During the show, we're usually downstairs in the dressing room or backstage helping with costume changes or just picking up costumes.  We can usually hear most of it, but not much seeing.  Oh, well.  It's fun and I get paid. :)

It was almost exactly 24 hours. I have to wonder if AT&T was doing some kind of maintenance or upgrades or something because I have never had trouble with the DSL unless the entire phone line was out of service. My phone line was perfectly fine. It was just the DSL which would drop on and off line.

I watched the next episode of THE STARTER WIFE while I cooked and ate lunch. Mildly pleasant episode. Judy Davis really does walk away with the acting honors.

I then had time to watch six more episodes of WALKER, TEXAS RANGER. Interesting guest stars: Lee Majors, Gary Busey, Michael Parks in various episodes. I'll say this, if one was a fan of the show, you got the same thing week after week: bullets and brawls. At least one fight scene in every show, a shoot-out in most of them, and high speed chases in about every four episodes. Lots of tender stories about kids at risk (about 1/3 of the shows involve children in perilous conditions).

Thanks. Yeah, I mentioned it in passing on Friday - a dead battery. Ordinarily, I wouldn't have cared, but I wanted to get finished with the TV box set I was reviewing (MATLOCK), and every lost hour cut my chances of finishing it that night. Luckily, things got fixed very fast, and I was able to finish MATLOCK with time to spare.

I'll likely NOT watch the Golden Globes tonight. I'll record them; read who won on the net later tonight, and then decide if I want to hear any of the speeches of the winners (depending who they are). Then, if there are, I'll speed through the show to watch those speeches.

I do plan to watch '24' "live," and then at 10, watch tonight's DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES and as much of BROTHERS & SISTERS as I can squeeze in before 11 p.m.

BK - If you're having such issues posting with photobucket, you might try tinypic.com.  I use it more often than photobucket, these days.  You can upload, just like you would in photobucket, then use the "IMG code for message boards and forums" link, which I've highlighted here in blue

click on it and copy-paste in whatever manner you choose, and post it directly into a message.

I'm just sayin...

Sunday morning greetings!  We're off to Cincinnati for Richard to officiate at morning prayer.  It's entirely possible that I will be the only one in the congregation, as Rob and Mary Linda are at a retreat in Indiana with another church group.

Health vibes to all DRs in need and to the MiL of DR Edi!

DR Ginny, if you are the only one in the congregation, couldn't you just have the service at home? ;)

Sorry to hear about DR MATTH's computer woes.  However after last night's beautiful full moon - today is the first day of our lovely Mercury retrograde which always brings with it computer and other electronic bolts and bumps, computer and travel delays - watch out DR DRUXY and  DR JOSE - and the suggestion NOT to buy major appliances, cars, or other electronic devices.....

Said retrograde will end on February 1st!

Why didn't you tell me this sooner, lol.  I spent a good part of the early afternoon at the office fighting with my computer and a new program I'm not particularly fond of

Well, Jose, I've checked for updates (none), I've shut down, and I just tried copying the image code and it's not taking, so something is amiss and it ain't with ME.

BK, when you copy the image code from Photobucket, are you relying on the website's automatic copy or do you do an actual copy (Cntrl + "C" on a PC, I donno what on a MAC.)  I've often found that Photobucket's autocopy doesn't always work so I do a manual copy and paste of the code.

Also, are you copying the code from the fourth box of code labled "IMG Code"?  THat's the one that includes the (http://tags.[IMG]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v130/WandaDuck/Sudden_Fear345.jpg)

There's not a lot more to do in Austin this trip.

We've got an appointment at Direct Buy today in the early afternoon to see what they have to offer, then unless wife Sandy wants to set up a couple more appointments with vendors on Monday, we're pretty much finished.

Sorry, I read that as useless wife Sandy.  LOL!

Has anybody here had experience with Direct Buy?

We had an appointment there today.  They would not tell us how much it would be for a membership until we took a 2 hour tour, and then if we didn't join today, we could never join.

Since we are not prepared to buy any furniture/appliances until after we move to Austin, we said we'd come back in March.

Just wondering if the membership is worth it.

It sure does.  I bet the person giving you the tour is on commission & doesn't want to waste their time unless you might purchase the, extremely expensive, membership.

I am not familiar with Direct Buy, I read about it online just now.  Before taking the tour I would want to have lists & lists of items I had previously priced.

So, no workarounds for this revolting Photobucket problem?

BK, I don't know if it works the same way on a MAC as it does a PC, but what I have always done is:

1. Right mouse click on the photo that is in Photobucket (or any photo on the internet, for that matter)

2.  When the window pops up, choose properties

3. In the next window that pops up look for Address/URL.

4. Highlight the URL. Righ click on the highlighted URL and choose "copy"

5. Go to HHW, to the post you are writing (using reply, not quick reply)  and paste in the URL.

6. Highlight the URL that you just pasted into you posting.

7. Then choose from the above listed "BBC Tags" the one that looks like tiny framed picture. This is called "insert picture," Click on it. It will automatically put and [img] tag at the beginning and end of the URL that you had pasted in.

8. Then continue with you post as normal and enjoy. You will have a lovely photo in your post.

I gaked this from another source, I'd love to know if this actually happened.  Supposedly at the final (or last night) production of Gypsy

Quote
In the middle of Rose's Turn, Patti Lupone stopped singing. She screamed, "Who do you think you are?" At someone in the rear orchestra section. "You just took 3 pictures. After all the announcements and signs you still took pictures. Who do you think you are?" She was so angry. My friend started clapping and then the entire audience chimed in and supported her with raucous applause and cheering. "I'm not going to continue while he's there. Get out!" She walks off the stage, stage left. She comes back on and sees the guy still sitting there. The stage manager audibly (to me) says, "We gotta keep moving." She looks at the guy in the audience, "Get him out of here. Get out! Who do you think you are?" The guy actually had the nerve to say, "It's just a couple of photos, you're an asshole." And leaves. The audience stands up and screams support. "All the people here EXCEPT THAT GUY respect what we're doing here on this stage." Raucous applause. She starts the number again. The audence cheers through the song which she sang with blazing hot intensity because of the altercation.

DR MBarnum - The copying/pasting/linking problem that bk is encountering is a Photobucket-only problem (so far).  Once you upload a photo to Photobucket, it automatically comes up with the "tags" for embedding, linking, or "blogging" the photo.  It used to be an automatic Copy and Paste operation: you just clicked on the IMG link, and it copied the link with the BBC tags to your clipboard, then all you had to do was to Paste it (into your post).  Something changed a couple of weeks ago, and that auto-copy feature no longer seems to work on Macs.  -However, I'm still able to manually Copy and Paste the links on my computer.

??? ???  ???

Now if bk or any other DR would like to hyperlink to a picture on another website (Amazon, IMDB, NYTimes, etc.) then the instructions that you posted above will come in handy.

*For a Mac:
-Control-Click on the picture
-Select "Copy Image Address".
-In your post, select or manually type the IMG tags.
-Position cursor between tags
-Apple+V (to Paste the link)

I just read one comment about her elsewhere online: "She looks a little like Amy Winehouse but healthy."  ;)

I don't think she links anorexic, she just looks thin and English and pale.  ;)

So, DR JoseSPiano...were your parents truly surprised?   They didn't try to run out the door or anything?    ;)

Well... The ringing of the doorbell sort of spoiled the whole surprise element of the proceedings.

:D

And I imagine "SURPRISE" isn't something his mom needs to hear these days!

Prolly not, especially since she has her "cardiac physical therapy" in the morning.

*And it appears my timing was spot on since it looks like I'll be spending tomorrow taking down the Christmas tree and decorations.  Although, it was very nice to see the tree.  :)

DR Druxy - As for "Direct Buy" - I know some friends who have tried it, and some friends who did some pretty good investigating before taking the plunge - or not taking the plunge.  The general consensus seems to be that if there is a lot of new building and/or remodeling going on in the area, then Direct Buy can be a good experience, investment.  However, if you are in a "low traffic" area, then the company seems to have a slower "in stock" time - which totally makes sense from the basic "supply and demand" model.

Were there other people looking around the Direct Buy warehouse?  If you seemed to be the only one there, well...

Back from a very long meeting about the very long script.  Now I know why the script is so long - its author talks a LOT.  Very nice chap.  I didn't really want to get into specifics, but I did make one suggestion about moving a number to the opening of act two, and he LOVED that.  In fact, right after that, he asked if I'd join the team and direct the staged reading - I hope it's not a decision I come to regret, but I said yes, mostly as a favor to the composer and lyricist, who are friends of mine.

Best phone call o' the day - Muse Margaret calling to tell me she loved every one of the fifty-eight pages - she had one tiny little note, which she was totally right about (I gave away a joke too early - an easy fix which required me to remove six words from a sentence), but she just had nothing but detailed and wonderful things to say, which, needless to say, made me feel GREAT.

Ah, Netflix must still be using the "old" release date.  Before the movie started gaining "buzz" in Hollywood, there was a chance that the movie was going to straight to DVD here in the States.  Needless to say, with the film's current popularity and award-worthiness, I'm betting that the DVD release will be pushed back by a couple of weeks.  *And Amazon has no projected release date listed.

What an amazing piece of film-making. It manages to be a cartoon/animated feature, a memory piece, a documentary and analysis of the troubles in Palestine in the early 1980's, particularly the massacre of a whole town/camp of Palestinians by Christian Phalangists.

The use of animation is used expertly to "portray" the recent past both realistically (as in news accounts) and in very personal, post-trauma-tinged memories and dreams. It managed to be Academic and entertaining at the same time.

Think I'll recommend The Reader as my book group's book/movie selection for our traditional August anniversary celebration.

It's a good book. It was one of Oprah's Book Club books years ago...at least I think it was

DR DRUXY - I know two friends who joined DIRECT BUY.

Both made some major purchases.  One friend bought an entire EXPENSIVE dining room set, table and eight chairs, buffet and china cabinet, and a side board.

Three of the chairs were back ordered and arrived six months later, one of the glass windows in the china cabinet was broken, and the WHOLE thing had to be returned to be repaired....

The other person bought a bedroom set with several pieces.....which arrived piece meal over a period of about three months.

Neither was happy and would not recommend DIRECT BUY.....but I only have this SECOND HAND experience.

I am not watching the Golden Globe Awards either....

Thanks for the information.

We have decided to pass.

Did you see the link I posted for you?

We are currently reading MR PIP.  I believe it will be a hit.  I'll let you know after our discussion on Tuesday.

I'm having fun watching the Golden Globes and making a list of things to add to our Netflix list:

Recount
Burn After Reading
Bernard & Doris

Exactly what I'm doing

All 3 of these?

I liked it, thought the performances by Mickey Rourke and Marisa Tomei were real and raw... But it will be a while before I watch it again.  It's a very rough movie to watch on a couple of levels.  As I mentioned before, I winced a lot during some of the wrestling scenes - and the post-wrestling scenes. Not necessarily violent, but very graphic.

And I even got all choked up again when they showed that clip from "Slumdog Millionaire".  That's definitely a movie I want to see again before it leaves the theatres.  I just want to experience that amazing rush again collectively.

And it won too! :)

Well, I finished WALKER TEXAS RANGER with about 14 minutes to spare before '24' started. (I needed to watch it "live" due to other things the DVR was recording.)

Glad I have another season of THAT one behind me.

'24' was a very fun two hours of chases and thrills. I don't think it quite matched the season premieres of several other previous seasons, but there were a lot of plots set into motion tonight, more than in other seasons, I think.

I did watch the first 15 minutes of BROTHERS & SISTERS. Sally's reaction to the design was a little extreme, I thought. The other plots are barely getting started.

Tomorrow I'll be working on the next Criterion disc, Douglas Sirk's MAGNIFICENT OBSESSION. Not only does the disc contain the Wyman-Hudson version, it also has the Dunne-Taylor version which I've never seen (and which was my father's favorite movie along with NAUGHTY MARIETTA.)

Back from the long jog.  A stunning day out.  I ran more briskly than usual because I found yet another old pair of jean cutoffs - the ones I was wearing (the third pair during this diet) were making it very difficult to jog properly since they were literally falling off and I'd have to hike them up ever other minute.

You would be right in style with the youth of today.
