And the word of the day is: ABROGATE!
During the days of segregation, it was common to find houses with a white gate and A BRO GATE (located towards the back of the house, of course). These days, thankfully, segregation isn't legal.

There's a bartender at a restaurant here in Rehoboth whose hair matches those shoes.
Well, not the heels, but the rest of the shoes.
Honest!

That meeting that I was supposed to attend yesterday didn't get attended to.
Apparently, I'm not the only one who missed the meeting. Serves 'em right, given the short notice that we were given, and that most of us billing clerks have Monday and Tuesday off and wouldn't have read the email (which was sent on Monday) until yesterday.
Sometimes, I have to wonder about the people who set up these things.
Le sigh.

I've never been to New Orleans.
It would be a nice place to visit, to see the sights and overeat.
But I don't want to go there during Mardi Gras - I really really really (that's a trio) don't like crowds.

Good morning, all! This is a day with nothing new to report. I did finish the adjustments to Brent Barrett's orchestration and I'll take a break today to look it over and be sure I've crossed every T and dotted every i. Today's mostly a Frank Loesser day but i have to finish the edits on the funny "Song of the Poet" before I can begin. I've also got to call Time Warner Cable to make sense of their latest communication concerning several URL addresses.
I worked on Brent's chart until 9:15 last night, got some dinner and watched TOP CHEF, which got me thinking: does the show deliberately sabotage their contestants by sendng them to a kitchen space with non-working equipment? I was wondering this when I was thinking about all the money put out for supplies, food, etc., and a space they publicly call atttention to that turns out to have an unreliable kitchen!
TOD: Europe; I've got as far as London, and I'd love to see more of the UK - particularly Jane Austen territory and Aldeburgh, Edinburgh, and Dublin - but i never crossed the channel and I would like to see several European cities before my limnited time becoems terminal.

And as for some of the "surprises" among this morning's Oscar Nominations, well... The L.A. Times sums it up best:
The Envelope (http://theenvelope.latimes.com/env-et-oscar-noms2009jan22,0,4716117.story)
There were several snubs:
Bruce Springsteen, who won the Golden Globe for best song for his title tune from "The Wrestler," was overlooked. The "Dark Knight" failed to receive nominations for best picture, director or screenplay -- a surprise for those who had predicted it would do well in those categories. Also noticeably missing from the list was Sally Hawkins for best actress for "Happy-Go Lucky" and Dev Patel for best supporting actor for "Slumdog Millionaire."
Clint Eastwood fans who had been hoping the veteran would get an Oscar nomination for lead actor for "Gran Torino," which is shaping up to be the 78-year-old icon's biggest box office hit, were undoubtedly disappointed.
Veteran director and screenwriter Woody Allen also was passed up for his "Vicky Cristina Barcelona."
Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio failed to earn nominations for "Revolutionary Road."
-

*A few surprises, but at least one of them - for me - was a very pleasant one: Richard Jenkins for Leading Actor in "The Visitor". Oh, and Michael Shannon for Supporting Actor in "Revolutionary Road".
Jenkins was nominated for the SAG so it wasn't a total surprise for me. I was surprised that Dev Patel wasn't nominated for SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE.
Also, only three best song nominations (two of which went to songs in SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE). Bruce Springsteen's "The Wrestler" (which won the Golden Globe) didn't get nominated.

Yes, the studio for THE READER had been pushing Kate Winslet as Best Supporting Actress for the film so she could qualitfy as Best Actress for REVOLUTIONARY ROAD. The actors branch obviously saw things differently.

I'll be working on the second season of THE INVADERS today (and likely the next two days as well). It's a full season of episodes (unlike season one), so there's something like 1300+ minutes to watch.

The animated feature category is WALL-E, BOLT, and KUNG FU PANDA. That should be an easy one to predict, even though KUNG FU PANDA was also very popular this year.
-

* Michael Shannon in “Revolutionary Road” (DreamWorks, Distributed by Paramount Vantage)
-
I also noticed that the hilarious short animated film "Presto" which accompanied WALL-E in theaters is nominated in the animated short category. It was SO fresh and funny, very similar to the lunacy of the old Warner Bros. cartoons.
-
BEST PICTURE
* “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” (Paramount and Warner Bros.)
* “Frost/Nixon” (Universal)
* “Milk” (Focus Features)
* “The Reader” (The Weinstein Company)

And thus completes my copying and pasting. For now. ;)

I was disappointed that Eastwood didn't get a nod, but there were really no major surprises for me.

Taraji has certainly come a long way from her awful role in BOSTON LEGAL. I couldn't stand her character on that show.

Oh, yes, they didn't want to risk her splitting her votes between the two films and not getting nominated at all which has happened sometimes in the past. It's against Academy rules for an actor to be nominated twice in the same category. Luckily for Kate, the Best Actress category has fewer numbers of potential nominees.
-
And it will certainly be interesting if Viola Davis walks away with the Oscar for her role in Doubt. That role seems to be an "awards-worthy" one for the actresses who have played it on stage on Broadway and regionally.
At this point, I think it's between her and Penelope Cruz for the award.

Happy Birthday Elan.
Vibes for CL's brother. I must say I have been experiencing something a little similar, which I am chalking up to BK's favorite bugaboo, food poisoning. I ate a gourmet brownie from our local natural foods store on Monday night and almost immediately began feeling weird, with horrible intestinal cramps. They've continued for two days now--if they're not gone by tomorrow, I'll see the doctor, who of course will lecture me about my various health failings.

Adams has always been an arrogant little f*** (IMHO, of course), so this is karma reaching out and bitchslapping him but good. Three papers (including PDX's "alternative" paper, Just Out), have called for him to resign.
I guess you got me started on that one. :)

HEALTH VIBES FOR DR SAMANTHA’S FATHER, BROTHER OF DR CILLA!!!

If ever there was an Oscar-bait picture it's Benjamin Button, so it leading the field in nominations doesn't surprise me - whether it pulls a Forrest Gump (same writer, same feel, same a lot of stuff) remains to be seen, because Slumdog Millionaire, which, for me, is a much better film in terms of delivering what it sets out to deliver, is the Academy's favorite sort of underdog.

I have friends who think Button will absolutely win best score - and I wouldn't be unhappy if it did, as I like its composer very much. However, given the history of the way the Academy votes for music awards, I'll predict that the winner will be A.R. Rahman.

"Button" was also one of the few films to qualify for and be worthy in so many of the Technical Categories.

And if the Administration in Washington has its way, things could get better:
Whitehouse Agenda (http://www.whitehouse.gov/agenda/civil_rights/)
Support Full Civil Unions and Federal Rights for LGBT Couples: President Obama supports full civil unions that give same-sex couples legal rights and privileges equal to those of married couples. Obama also believes we need to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act and enact legislation that would ensure that the 1,100+ federal legal rights and benefits currently provided on the basis of marital status are extended to same-sex couples in civil unions and other legally-recognized unions. These rights and benefits include the right to assist a loved one in times of emergency, the right to equal health insurance and other employment benefits, and property rights.

Yeah - and hard work for me!
My CA friend who was President of Log Cabin-LA, and then Chairman of Log Cabin-Ca has just been elected Chairman of Log Cabin-National. (I have been a ghost writer and strategist of his for years.) I have proposed the Log Cabin focus all its National efforts on helping Obama get his agenda passed.
Summary of the President's Gay Rights Agenda:
Hate-Crimes (TG inclusive or not)
ENDA (TG inclusive or not)
Defense of Marriage Act - repeal
Civil Unions - extension of Federal recognition and same rights extended to married couples
DADT - repeal (no mention of repeal of UCMJ article criminalizing sodomy)
Adoption rights - expand for gay individuals and couples (Arguably should be left to the states)
AIDS prevention
Age appropriate education, including contraception
Condom distribution in prisons
Condom distribution by Public Health Services
Lift ban on needle-exchange programs
I am proposing a questionnaire for all Republican Senators to get a sounding on where they might stand on these issues. Obama can probably push bills through the House without Republican help, but he will likely need a few Republican votes in the Senate.
Instead of fighting the Administration on collateral issues (like Gay Marriage) I believe we should focus on joining the Administration in moving their announced agenda forward. I do have some opposition from those who rather sit on the back-bench and fault the administration for not moving fast enough or far enough.

The Prop 8 folks are not seeking to invalidate your CA marriage in NY, only in CA:
MERCURY NEWS (http://www.mercurynews.com/ci_11273340?nclick_check=1)
...
An estimated 18,000 same-sex couples married in California after the Supreme Court's ruling in May that struck down existing legal bans. Brown has said that Proposition 8 is not retroactive to
those couples, and he reiterated that statement Friday, saying the marriages of same-sex couples who wed between June 16 and Election Day should remain valid in California, regardless of whether Proposition 8 is upheld.
Proposition 8 supporters acknowledge those marriages were legal before Election Day, and say they are not trying to "nullify" them now. They argue that the plain language of Proposition 8 — "Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California." — means those marriages can no longer be recognized in California, although they would still be valid in other states where same-sex marriage is legal or recognized.
So, since there is no issue of revoking your marriage, I suspect you'll see no court order on the subject.

WASHINGTON POST (http://voices.washingtonpost.com/inauguration-watch/2009/01/hbo_to_air_update_version_of_s.html)
HBO to Air 'Updated Version' of Sunday's Concert Tomorrow
HBO says it will telecast “an updated version” of Sunday’s inaugural-related concert tomorrow (Wednesday) at 11:30 p.m. Eastern and Pacific time,
By “updated,” the premium cable network means it will include the invocation that had been delivered by the Rev. V. Gene Robinson, the openly gay New Hampshire Episcopal bishop, at the ceremony’s start.
HBO’s Sunday telecast had not included the invocation and the premium telecast had exclusive TV rights to the event, which meant no one watching the concert on TV saw the invocation. They did catch celebrities like Denzel Washington, Tom Hanks, Mary J. Blige, Beyonce, and Garth Brooks. Obama addressed the crowd near the end of the bash.
HBO had opened up its Sunday concert telecast to non-paying members; tomorrow’s re-telecast is available to subscribers only.

One thing I have noticed with the Blu-Ray - when I move closer to the screen the image gets sharper, unlike the regular TV that would get blurry. (And I'm only 720 - but I suspect 720 on a 26" is sharpere than 1080 on a 52").

I honestly understand the hesitancy to inoculate. If you read the rising numbers of autistic children & the articles connecting them to vaccinations (not saying there really is a connection) the parents are understandably scared. What the parents don't have is an honest fear of some of the diseases vaccinations prevent.

DR Laura mentioned a new tumbleweed sculpture. In Chandler (a suburb of Phoenix) for the last 50 years they would have a big tumbleweed Christmas tree and a Tumbleweed Festival, but I noticed it didn't happen this year. I suppose there isn't enough vacant land left around there to get many tumbleweeds anymore.

Thanks all for the vibes for my brother. First thing this morning he was life flighted to Sioux Falls where he underwent an angioplasty and had a stent put in. I don't know too many details except that he is very sedated and that they are hoping he can get out of the hospital in the next couple days. He had a 100% blocked artery when he was 35 or 36 years old, so it wasn't a surprise that it was another heart issue.

BEST ACTRESS
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
* Amy Adams in “Doubt” (Miramax)
* Penélope Cruz in “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” (The Weinstein Company)
* Viola Davis in “Doubt” (Miramax)
* Taraji P. Henson in “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” (Paramount and Warner Bros.)
* Marisa Tomei in “The Wrestler” (Fox Searchlight)
Taraji has certainly come a long way from her awful role in BOSTON LEGAL. I couldn't stand her character on that show.
That's who she is! She looked so familiar but I couldn't remember where I'd seen her before. I thought that she was very good in "Benjamin Button." I didn't mind her character in "Boston Legal," but she wasn't one of my favorites.

On a lighter note, I've officially lost 31.2 pounds.

I have tried explaining how very sick my sister was. They don't believe it. If my father had not been a doctor & my mother not been so adept at caring for her, she would have been hospitalized. Home was safer. The only long term effect I was familiar with was blindness. My parents were very scared about that & kept the room very dark.
My brother & I followed her severe case with very, very mild ones.

Wow, the weight loss really shows Cil. You look great!
No, there is no way to make the profile picture bigger. It's due to the software apparently. Old pictures that were already in the system show up at a viewable size but anything added since the switch to the new software is thumbnail size.
Posting your picture within the post does allow the picture to enlarge so you can really see yourself.

We have a new scanner. Well, not really. The scanner here in the city suddenly stopped working. I don't know why. The software would try to load but nothing happened with the machine. I removed the software and re-installed it but, again, nothing. We tried using it through the Windows Wizard but it just sat there like so much fish. Anthony has (had) a scanner on Long Island. We were out there for the long weekend and he was going to scan things he needed. Strangely enough the software on the Long Island scanner stopped working. The scanner itself worked (something the city scanner did not do) but the software was wonky. Again, I took off that software and reloaded it to no avail. Luckily, we could get the scanner to work through the Windows Wizard. It works fine and it's easier to use through the Wizard than with the old software. We can't use it as a copy machine or to send e-mail but we never used it to send e-mail and we rarely used it as a copy machine so no loss. When we returned to the city on Monday we brought the scanner with us and it works perfectly! We saved $100 since we were looking to replace the old scanner. Ah, technology!

Back from the long work session and have had some foodstuffs from Gelson's.
-
Not only that - page twelve.

The first two hours were spent on music and lyrics. We actually spent an hour on the opening number - we cut a verse out and rearranged some of the song, then worked on the vamps and a dance break and it's much more focused and fun now - I don't think Adryan has seen me at work before in this regard and I think she found it fascinating. I have worked with Shelly so he's used to my methods and he's very quick. We worked on the second song and did the same sort of things, doing a major revision of the end of it. We started on a third song but the author arrived. He and his writing partner did a whole new outline of the show based on my notes. I wish they hadn't, as they made some decisions that should have been chatted about first, but we addressed each of them and came up with some good solutions. There are going to be a bunch of new numbers written from scratch and we'll do what we did today to the handful of other numbers that will stay. I do love the process of fixing songs that aren't quite landing, and also focusing book problems.
As to well-compensated, I'm afraid not. I made a promise to Adryan over a year ago that if she wanted me to direct a staged reading for her that I'd do it for free. And that, of course, is how this started out. But I have a deal that I will receive money when and if the show is financed. They know my time will be what I need it to be and other than the work sessions with the songwriters, the rest can be done via e-mail.

Well, I guess this answers the question I had...
The Famous Fingers Were Live, But Their Sound Was Recorded (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/23/arts/music/23band.html)
It was not precisely lip-synching, but pretty close.
The somber, elegiac tones before President Obama’s oath of office at the inauguration on Tuesday came from the instruments of Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman and two colleagues. But what the millions on the Mall and watching on television heard was in fact a recording, made two days earlier by the quartet and matched tone for tone by the musicians playing along.

Worm Infects Millions of Computers Worldwide (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/23/technology/internet/23worm.html)
A new digital plague has hit the Internet, infecting millions of personal and business computers in what seems to be the first step of a multistage attack. The world’s leading computer security experts do not yet know who programmed the infection, or what the next stage will be.
In recent weeks a worm, a malicious software program, has swept through corporate, educational and public computer networks around the world. Known as Conficker or Downadup, it is spread by a recently discovered Microsoft Windows vulnerability, by guessing network passwords and by hand-carried consumer gadgets like USB keys.

The above pic was taken while I was walking around the campus of VCU. The Cathedral of the Sacred Heart is basically a part of the campus, and as I was walking by it, "those" caught my eye(!). I took a series of photos when I first saw "them", and another series a couple of minutes later. I'm still not really sure what exactly caused such "figures", but I was very "relieved" when I went to show Steve my pictures and the "figures" were still there. ;)
