BK, according to CastAlbumDB.com, Con O'Neill was on the 1988 cast recording of Blood Brothers (http://www.castalbumdb.com/rec.cfm?RNumber=98), with Kiki Dee as the mother.  That was the first recording of the show that I'd gotten.  I've since purchased other recordings of this show.

Good morning, all! I am off to another day of the McGlinnventory. Yesterday I discovered in one of the boxes a vocal score for Bizet's opera La jolie fille de Perth that I had loaned John around 1990. It's nice to have it back.  After that, I am having lunch with several coleagues from the PHI project. At 4:30, if my discomfort level from the shoulder pains is good, I am seeing the NYMF production of THE LAST SMOKER IN AMERICA because I like the title song, which Emily Skinner, I believe, recorded. I'd like to see FINIAN'S RAINBOW tonight to see if the original finale is back.

Last night was a creepy nightmare night, a series of dreams about staying in an apartment with a hostile ghost who wanted me out. Perhaps this is prompted by the thought that my friend Matthew and I may see PARANORMAL ACTIVITY tomorrow afternoon, or perhaps it's the approaching Halloween season.

DR vixmom, I don't know yet if I will catch the show at next Saturday's matinee or just meet you afterwards. I can't plan that far in advance at the moment.

TOD:
DVD: Lord lord lord! Those three Netflix items still sit here unwatched and other things are piling up.

'The most hilarious Julie Andrews story was recounted by both Chris [Durang] and Michael [Rupert]. She has a house in Switzerland and that's where the creative team of Putting It Together went to talk to her about being a part of the show. She agreed to do it and the next morning took one of her exercise walks around the mountains that bordered her house. Julie hadn't been on a New York stage in 35 years and she thought that she'd better start getting her voice in shape. She was vocalizing and singing different songs from her past and decided to test her soprano by singing something from The Sound of Music. She began the song while nearing the peak of a mountain and right when she got to "The Hills are alive…with the sound of music" she was coming down the other side of the mountain. Well, that moment coincided with an entirely filled tour bus coming down the road! Julie was horrified that a bunch of tourists saw her literally coming over the Swiss Alps while singing, "The hills are alive with the sound of music." Julie said their faces had the subtext of "How sad. She still thinks she's still in The Sound of Music. Poor Julie Andrews."'

My work project for today will be twofold. The primary focus will be on this year's flop Nia Vardos comedy MY LIFE IN RUINS, one of the Fox Blu-rays that came in yesterday. I use the term "flop" merely to explain its box-office take which was very weak. That doesn't mean the movie is not good; I'll see for myself later today since I obviously never saw the movie at the theater.

I have Season Four of BONES on Blu-ray, so instead of watching PERRY MASON episodes for fun over the next few days, I'll be going back through Season 4 of BONES during times when I'm not watching my primary work project disc or eating lunch and watching something from the DVR. When I finally finish the other Fox Blu-ray films, I can then concentrate on finishing the BONES set. There are 24 episodes in the set, so hopefully doing this might allow me to watch the rest in the set and save a day of viewing so I can get the review up as quickly as possible (since it's already well over a week past street date).

Project Runway -- No Spoilers

First off, I was very pleased with/for the winner of last night's challenge.
Second, I think the wrong person went home.  As much as I liked the person who stayed, enough is enough.  That's three strikes...three stinky outfits...the person who went home has done nothing but superb work up until last night.

There may be one female designer who is very, very good...but as Nicholas observed loudly, she's a real bitch.  I hate her.

DVD-Rs of FLASH FORWARD and EASTWICK.

CD:
MAME - OBC

Reading Material:
SHUTTER ISLAND - Dennis Lehane - I'm almost through this in one sitting.  Creepy and fascinating.
A LION AMONG MEN - Gregory Maguire - the third in the WICKED years.  I liked this more than the readers on Shelfari or GoodReads.
THE BIG BURN - awesome telling of a forest fire in the Pacific Northwest in the early 1900s.  (perhaps DR TCB could joh HIS memory and tell us more about it).  ;)

The Paris Blu-Ray has slightly better color than its DVD counterpart, mainly due to the Blu-Ray format itself.  The transfer is still way too brown, as is Gigi.  But yes, they do look better.

Now, if they'd release THE PIRATE on Blu-Ray. . .or any other Gene Kelly films. . .seeing what they did with WIZARD OF OZ, albeit they knew that the dollars spent would pay off in the long run, the films that Minnelli did for MGM would make stunning blu-rays.

I didn't get those remastered GIGI and AMERICAN IN PARIS discs on DVD; I only had the original DVD releases for both of them, but to me the Blu-rays were MAJOR upgrades to what I had. I think PARIS is the better of the two in terms of video quality. I understand GIGI's original elements were in very bad shape.

At any rate, the only thing I hated about PARIS was the weak audio track (not a lossless encode but a low bitrate Dolby Digital track that sounded like it was the same as the orignal DVD track. Unworthy of an HD upgrade. Sounds is JUST as important as picture.)

While I ate lunch, I watched last night's THE MENTALIST. What a surprise to find Mark Pellagrino (who's playing the Devil on SUPERNATURAL this season) as the head of the biker gang (excuse me, motorcycle club) in the episode. Really enjoyed the back and forth with Patrick and the club members. The mystery was pretty good, but the game was given away during the driving sequence.

Then I watched today's work project A: MY LIFE IN RUINS. It's a very mediocre romantic comedy. Very predictable scenario, and Nia Vardalos just doesn't have the screen charm and charisma to work as a romantic leading lady. (She goes through the first half of the film with her mouth open; very unattractive, and she's stiff compared to the better actors around her). Sure, a few of the jokes land and there's some decent sentiment, but even at 95 minutes, it seemed long.

There were THREE commentaries! I don't know why they'd do that instead of editing the three into one decent track. The star, the director, and the writer each get his own, but actually the writer is the chattiest of the three. The director had some decent comments to make. I found Nia's track the least interesting by far.
Title: Re: OBER
Post by: Matt H. on October 16, 2009, 01:20:26 PM
There were really only two other bonus features: seven deleted scenes and an alternate ending and a little featurette where the director has edited together the entire cast making eyes at the (very handsome) leading man throughout the picture.

So, a very disappointing work project this afternoon.

With the return of UGLY BETTY tonight, I'll have to watch something "live" at 8 p.m. since I have THREE shows tonight in that opening hour: LAW & ORDER, GHOST WHISPERER, and BETTY. BETTY's second hour also conflicts with MEDIUM and MONK (though MONK repeats tonight's episode at an early morning time).

I'll likely watch the two CBS shows "live" and let everything else record.

While they would like you to think the Gigi elements are in bad shape it is clear that the only thing that was in bad shape was someone's knowledge of color.  The elements for Gigi are fine - I saw a newly-struck print about ten years ago and it looked swell.  They simply made it too brown.  But I think all my bitching about this may have finally begun paying off - because either someone got sacked or they've gotten someone in there who knows what color should look like (not brown) - the Wizard Of Oz disc has terrific color as does The Grinch and several other Warners transfers of very recent releases.

We got to Grant's at eleven.  Grant couldn't get the files to open.  He's completely renovated his studio and things got plugged in and put together differently.  When something isn't working the way it's supposed to Grant always goes to the "I can't figure it out" place - he called his guy who did the wiring and couldn't get him on the phone.  Meanwhile, Niki and I went and got a sandwich.  When we came back an hour later everything was working.  Grant finally just turned all the equipment on and off a few times and that fixed things - go know.  The actual recording went really fast - Niki, of course, knew the songs perfectly and she did most of them in one beautiful take.  I'm so glad we've got these now.  I'll be going back, hopefully on Sunday, to mix the new tracks and to record the new Eunice song and to re-record Doing Porn with its new tune.

Truthfully - usually not. He has the kitchen TV to keep him occupied and he is usually a fan of some of what I record in the Livng Room - to night, Ugly Betty and Stargate-Universe). I'm never recording anything that competes with something he wants to watch. When he is disatisfied with my choices (which is usual) he retreats to the Bedroom and watches DVDs - the BR rig has the Blu-Player attached, and can display the DVDs while still recording two shows.

Oh, crap.

A judge of the Superior Court (one block away from my building) has ruled that Johannes Mehserle, the BART police officer who shot and killed Oscar Grant on New Year's Day during an incident on BART, may have a change-of-venue for his trial.

I don't know if anyone here recalls that earlier this year I wrote about rioting in the streets of Oakland (mostly along 14th street where my building is located...and the route to my car park and to my gym) when they were holding hearings to determine how to handle the case.

The press has been full of dire warnings that a change-of-venue may spark more riots.

The announcement was made earlier in the afternoon.  And folks here in my building are keeping a close watch on the group of protestors that have been nearly glued to "TV corner" -- the part of the Superior Courthouse where TV news crews set up to film the protests.

Ron should be happy with the last paragraph:

NBC (http://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/local-beat/Mehserle-Trial-Moved-64616742.html)

Quote
In his 28-page decision, Jacobson cited extensive media coverage and noisy protests of previous court hearings as factors in granting the change of venue.

Had he not granted the motion, Jacobson would have been criticized by advocates for Mehserle, who say that the former police officer couldn't get a fair hearing. And having granted the motion, he'll now face invective for not making Mehserle stand trial in the same county where Grant died.

It's just one more step in a messy case -- and now the mess is moving somewhere else.

- Seth Rudetsky, recalling his recent interview with Michael Rupert & Christopher Durang in this week's "Onstage & Backstage" column

Yes, Dame Andrews has a chalet in Gstaad, just like Liz Taylor and Polanski!
oops; have I said Polanski?

Well, that moment coincided with an entirely filled tour bus coming down the road! Julie was horrified that a bunch of tourists saw her literally coming over the Swiss Alps while singing, "The hills are alive with the sound of music." Julie said their faces had the subtext of "How sad. She still thinks she's still in The Sound of Music. Poor Julie Andrews."'

- Seth Rudetsky, recalling his recent interview with Michael Rupert & Christopher Durang in this week's "Onstage & Backstage" column

Personally, I would have been transfixed by such a sight...and thrilled beyond measure.

Gosh! I'dlike to see what you look like when transfixed! ;)

Back from the long jog, which was very difficult and very pathetic save for one lovely thing that happened.  Just before I hit the two mile mark I passed a man sitting on his apartment's front steps talking on his cell.  I turned around and began the two-mile jog back from whence I'd come and as I passed him he smiled and waved and said, "Nice to see you, Mr. Kimmel."  I turned back to say thanks, and he said, "I've enjoyed your work."  I'm always taken aback by that sort of thing, and I really thought it was nice of him to call out.  I said thanks and continued my pathetic jog home.

That's really nice. :)

Due to the overabundance of shows, I had to watch both of my prime time shows "live" tonight. I chose the two CBS dramas to watch.

GHOST WHISPERER was a good one, and what a surprise for Bryan Batt to be playing a guest star role. It appears it might even be a recurring character, a romantic interest for Delia.

After arising at 3 a.m., we had a flight to Denver, followed by a flight to Milwaukee.  We are in the Radisson, which I am currently irate with (what else is new?).  This is a large hotel with an interior courtyard with a pool.  For over SIX HOURS today, from the time we checked in until a few minutes ago when I threatened the front desk that I was about to call the police, the pool has been full (as in 30 or more kids) of raucous teens, making so much noise that we literally could not hear each other speak in conversational tones in our room, and we're on the second floor!  We called several times down to the front desk, with no quieting.  I finally went down to the front desk and in front of a bunch of people checking in informed the staff in loud tones that I was about to phone the police if this problem was not solved.  Everyone in line was very sympathetic, especially after they heard I had kids trying to get to sleep.  The coup de grace was the security guy coming up to my room, saying they were closing the pool early (5 minutes), and that I SHOULDN'T HAVE BOOKED MY ROOM IN THIS PART OF THE HOTEL!!!  Like I knew--they frigging assigned me this room.  I couldn't believe it.

These stupid frigging kids could use an exorcist.  They're the spawn of the devil.  So incredibly rude, and how stupid of the hotel to let them go on for hours.  There are 25 rooms booked with friends and family for this Bar Mitzvah and I would think they would want to keep us happy, rather than a bunch of hoodlum teens.

Back from the Gardenia and an evening of songs by the composer and lyricist of the long musical - songs they've written together for our show (they did five), and songs they've written with others or by themselves.  It was a nice evening - Jason Graae did two songs, and Andrea Marcovicci one - I must say I find the latter fascinating for any number of reasons.  Lots of friends in the audience and I met some nice folks.  I'll go write the notes but they'll probably be up a little late.
