I remember seeing BIG's "Food of the Gods" at a drive-in right after we moved here to Olympia from Colorado in 1976.  We also saw "Empire of the Ants" at that same drive-in...which was torn down a few years later.

Hoping you find this linked YouTube video entertaining. Please pass the link on to any Food Network fans if you do.

It's to the tune of "So Much Better" from Legally Blonde, and it's called "So Much Butter" -

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fZnWq9Vi1ww

The "butter" aspect is about the "friction" between Paula Deen and Barbara Walters, when Paula Deen was on THE VIEW several weeks back, and Barbara Walters made some surprising comments about Paula Deen contributing to childhood obesity.

Jose, I know we were saying the other night over dessert that the event itself on THE VIEW really wasn't much of anything - but searching on google seems to show that it really did get blown up in the innernet press, so it seems very ripe for making fun of it WITHOUT (I hope) anyone really taking offense.

Hope my take on it  makes you laugh if you have time to watch.

BK,

Your mention of VILLAGE OF THE GIANTS brought back some memories.

I don't think I ever saw the picture.  At least, not all of it.

But, one of the stars [Charla Doherty] was my lady friend for a couple of years.

She died too young.

The term "Dopp kit" derives from early 20th century leather craftsman Charles Doppelt, a German immigrant to the United States, who invented his toiletry case in 1919.

I just had to share.      :)

Good morning, all! I am getting very jittery about the Big Opening Night tonight and the Partay afterward. Thank you all for the good wishes and thoughts. This morning I have to wrap several opening night gifts and buy several cards. I just moved my physical therapy from this afternoon to tomorrow: after the last session my shoulder ached the rest of the day and I do not want to be uncomfortable tonight.

BK, I loved the tale of dinner with Mr BIG. I don't remember seeing that many of his films as a kid. I saw EARTH VS THE SPIDER several times at the drive in, as well as several I didn't much care for - THE AMAZING COLOSSAL MAN, WAR OF THE COLOSSAL BEAST, and THE CYCLOPS. The one I wanted to see but didn't for 40 years was THE MAGIC SWORD. I don't think I've seen any other films of his.

Well, I guess my favorite producer/director of B movies would be Roy William Neill who helmed most of the Universal/Sherlock Holmes pictures. They're BY FAR my favorite B-movies of all-time.

I wouldn't be surprised if those Disney/Pixar Blu-rays arrived today, but I'll be finishing the Hitchcock box I'm working on today, so I won't be able to get to UP! until tomorrow unless I can breeze my way through the two remaining Hitchcock pictures in record time. Then I'd at least watch the movie portion of the UP! set tonight. The bonuses will likely take hours to get through like with most Pixar releases.

TOD:

Bert I Gordon is at the very top of my list, of courrse. I have loved his movies since I was a little kid. EARTH VS. THE SPIDER, WAR OF THE COLOSSAL BEAST and ATTACK OF THE PUPPET PEOPLE being my top 3 favorites of his films.

Roger Corman: His films from the 1950s are among my all time favorites. THE UNDEAD, MONSTER FROM THE OCEAN FLOOR, VIKING WOMEN AND THE SEA SERPENT, TEENAGE DOLL...

Homi Wadia: From the 1930s through the 1970s this guy made some of the most wonderful Bollywood films ever...all of the Fearless Nadia pictues, dozens of colorful mythologicals and Arabian Nights films, all of the Zimbo films, and many Indian sword and sandal pictures. His films are gaining quite a fan base in the US and UK as they are slowly being released onto DVD and VCD.

Here is a cool sample of a Homi Wadia fantasy adventure which I think BK would truly enjoy:

Not really an Ask BK, more of a suggestion to BK:  I think I mentioned this a few days when I was in the midst of reviewing THE PRISONER, but pull out that 5th bonus disc, the SD-DVD, and listen to the completely different themes written by the different composers (one of them Robert Farnon, which I still find rather unbelievable).  Farnon's theme is quasi-Elmer Bernstein in Magnificent Seven mode (Ionian, LOL).

I have a new(ish) computer at work and it seems to be working much better than the old one except for a quirk with the time. On Sunday it followed the rest of the world (not the U.S.) and reverted to Standard Time. Nothing I do will keep it at the correct time so I went into Time Zones and changed from Eastern to Atlantic. That seemed to work but again today the time changed on its own. Well I glanced down at the task bar and saw that it was 11:30 and I thought "hmm, I'll go to lunch early" instead of glancing at my watch to see the correct time. I came into the apartment and Anthony said "you're home early. Lunch isn't ready" Well, I was there an hour early. I have to talk to tech people. I know I have Service Pack 3 for Windows XP and no one else's computer here at the office has changed over. I don't know what's going on unless someone is trying to gaslight me!

I had to buy a new desk chair today.  My old chair which I purchased at the Goodwill store about 3 years ago, wanted to decide on its own when it would go up and down.  But since I only paid $9.99 for it, I decided to get a new one.

Wal Mart had some nice ones....I spent $69 + tax!  Whew.  I hadn't seen one at Goodwill for the last month or so.

I put it together in 35 minutes......and put my old one out at the street.  It only took 10 minutes for someone to decide they wanted it.....it was gone.

I forgot to post to yesterday's TOD, but my first "home away from home" was my starter house that I bought 30 years ago in Marietta. It was in such a bad neighborhood (mostly WWII era duplexes built for Bell Bomber workers) that my mom cried when she saw it. The neighborhood ultimately deteriorated so much due to slumlords (some of Marietta's most respected citizens!) that the city bought most of the properties from the slumlords at outrageous prices (700k an acre)  gave a huge TAD incentive to a great developer who started building really nice and expensive houses and some town homes. My street was the only one that wasn't bought up, because it wasn't "that bad". (Dang!) So I lived there until we moved in to Atlanta a few years ago. This nice development didn't get finished and the acres of woods torn down behind my house are a "PVC farm". I am now an "absentee landlord" but have responsible tenants, and am very happy in Atlanta. (Just wish this house was bigger!)

Hmmmm...well, I do happen to know that there will be a new Johnny Mercer song released next month. It was a lyric he wrote that was never set to music until recently by a composer whose songs we all know and love!

There were many rare TV appearances floating around (most of the great stuff didn't get used because it was more important to pay homage to any great writer except Johnny...grrr...) so it there's anything in particular you're looking for I could try and snag it before we donate everything to the Mercer archives.

Whatever it is has settled into my throat, and when I tried to speak earlier, I was quite literally caught off guard by the two-octave drop in my voice. I know I have Service Pack 3 for Windows XP and no one else's computer here at the office has changed over. I don't know what's going on unless someone is trying to gaslight me!

DR Ben - It sounds like your computer is checking in with the time server in Greenwich (UK), and not the one based out of the U.S. Naval Observatory in DC.

When in doubt, you could always check in at time.gov (http://time.gov/).

Pride Festival this weekend in Atlanta. Along with Halloween, it should be a very festive weekend!

Is there a convenient way to discern who belongs to which festivity?

Since the latter is the OFFICIAL holiday of the former, I'd say "No".

Thank You, DR Julie.

Although, at this point, I have a feeling that if I tried to talk for more than a minute or two, I'd probably have no voice left.  Thankfully(?), I'm feeling fine otherwise. No fever. No aches. Just a little bit of fatigue.

*And, thankfully, due to a scheduling change and/or mix-up, the voice lessons I was supposed to play for today were either cancelled and/or re-scheduled.  And/or something like that. ::)

Yesterday, I was able to spend a few hours really going through the complete exhibit of Celebrating 50 Years of Lincoln Center, over at the Library for the Performing Arts.  I highly recommend it if you haven't seen it yet.  It's there until mid-January.

There are many interesting film clips to watch.  Some of performance highlights over the years, from all of the different arts that have found a home at Lincoln Center.  Interviews with famous artists, such as Luciano Pavaroti, Beverly Sills, George Balanchine, Leonard Bernstein, etc., clips from groundbreaking ceremonies back in 1959 when construction was just getting underway, and many other interesting things to see.  Also, some costume exhibits, set models, and programs in display cases.  A very worthy way to spend a couple of hours on a rainy day.

DR Julie - we enjoyed the Lincoln Center exhibit, too.  The listening areas were all occupied, so I just stood back and watched a bit.  I spent more time looking at the print materials than Richard did (he went elsewhere in the library to read).  The costumes were something to see, especially the little (really, REALLY little) yellow dress from Contact.

That NYPL location will always be special to me, because it's where I had the epiphany right before my senior year in high school that led me to my career as a librarian.

Once again, I've been unable to get out of the house to jog because of the endless telephonic calls and e-mails.  Interestingly, last February when I was sent the script for the long musical I wrote a big note in pen on its final page about the ending image for the show, which I thought would be a coup de theater.  Back then I got the usual "It will never happen!"  This morning it happened.  :)  I brought it up again because of an added line I asked for, and this time, once the author understood exactly what I was talking about, he got "chills" and "thrills" and it went into the script immediately - and, of course, it's HIS idea - I think he really thinks that.

I've had a lovely phone conversation with Mr Ron Raines who's rehearsing A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC with Leslie Uggams in Detroit for Michigan Opera Theatre and I just spoke to my surrogate son Joshie, who's playing in the orchestra of his first Broadway show. I had to warn him about opening his opening night gift in public because it's a bit risque. The MD and director are getting tasteful gifts but Josh's is a consolation gift for the production's turning down his request to have his synth, which won't fit in the orchestra pit, placed in the chorus boys' dressing room.

The latter came out on October 6th, but tonight I'm going to start on UP. Yep, it doesn't come out until November 10th, but I think there would be more interest in it than in a disc set that's almost a month late.

When I got back in, I watched THE WRONG MAN. This movie has always depressed me, and it's scary that a completely innocent man could be railroaded into jail and almost a conviction due to a couple of coincidental pieces of flimsy evidence and some misidentification by frightened clerks and secretaries.

This is certainly the most inconsistent of all the video transfers. Goes from beautiful to awful almost from shot to shot.

Just didn't have quite the sharpness real HD usually has. Still, nice to have, but I can't keep it on there for very long. Lots of stuff to record tonight, and I'll have to watch GREY'S ANATOMY live due to the glut of new programming tonight.

Very funny!

I am having computer issues.  My computer was slow and when i rebooted, well now it will not start (load Windows).  I tried everything in my extremely limited know-how.

Maybe I will see if my brother-in-law can look at it this weekend. it's probably something very simple. And not knowing what to do is making me feel very inept!

Ooooh, Mr Farnon's one of my favourite music composers who deserves better recognition, I think.

He did conduct for a certain number of famous pipers, one being the one and only Eileen Farrell, to whom he even dedicated a melody.
AND Angela Morley, another pet of mine, was one of his "pupils".

The term "Dopp kit" derives from early 20th century leather craftsman Charles Doppelt, a German immigrant to the United States, who invented his toiletry case in 1919.

I just had to share.      :)

My dad always calls his "toiletry case" a Dopp Kit. I always wondered why, now I know....

XM is getting to be a bit of an expensive luxury--on Chill the other day I heard a really cool remix of a tune and ended up springing for the complete Hotel de Costes collection.  Then yesterday on Spa I heard a cool group called Mediaeval Baebes, and I just ordered all of their CDs.

I agree. Just listening to The Jonathan Schwartz program on XM Radio has cost me a small fortune

I recieved my cruise documents this week.  This is my first cruise in seven years, so it was kind of a shock to have all the documents delivered by e-mail.  I used to love to get the whole packet of plane tickets and ship tickets and shore excursions; and go through them one by one.  The e-mail version is not nearly as exciting, but I guess it saved the life of a tree.

Since I booked my own hotel reservation in Rome, at one third the price the cruise line would have charged me for the same hotel; the cruise line will not allow me to buy a space on their transfer bus from the hotel to the ship.  So, today my travel agent booked me a separate transfer, at a cost of $175.00 U.S.!!!

Then why not take a cab?  The taxi driver can unload your luggage & there should be someone from the cruise to tag it and take it from you.

I know what you mean about the email documents.  This was our first time with them and it was strange.  I find it easier to check out the excursions on line than in the cruise book, which we still received along with our luggage tags and a few other items.

From everything I read online last night, a taxi would not be any cheaper than the shuttle bus that I have booked.  It is based on the distance the port is from the center of Rome.   It is lucky I didn't decide on a limo, that would have cost me 500, and that is in Euros.

Did you put holds on any of the excursions?

Yes, for three of them

A half day Pompeii tour
An all-day tour of Florence
A full day in Pisa

I still may book the Monte Carlo tour.

In Florence we had the best Ribollita (tuscan bean) soup.  If you can be sure to try this.  It takes several days to make.

In Pisa we had the best 4 pizza ever, a 4 cheese pizza.  I also had an incredible caramel, or caramel swirl, gelato.  It was exceptional gelato even by Italian standards.   Overall my favorite flavor was stracciatella.  Except for the 2 days I was sick I had at least one cone a day.    Near the end of the trip when I knew I might never have anything as good again, and I haven't, I had 2 cones a day.

Today is would have been a very dreary day had the hiking trails not been aglow with yellow maple leaves and autumn colors.  Had I known the path would look like the yellow brick road I would have taken my camera with me.  On second thought, maybe it is best I didn't as I'm about to inundate you with photos from Sherlock & my almost daily walk.  I will attempt to spread the photos out over a number of days.

A Pot of Sunny Gold in Those Green Hills (http://theater2.nytimes.com/2009/10/30/theater/reviews/30finian.html)

".... All the comforting pleasures of the genre — infectious song, exuberant dancing, jokes both lovably corny and unexpectedly fresh, and of course the satisfying pairing of a him and a her — are on abundant display in this thoroughly winning production, a welcome picker-upper in an uneven Broadway season...."

After I finished writing up the Hitchcock set, I headed back down and watched UP on Blu-ray.

Movie is marvelous, a genius combination of humor and heart.

The Blu-ray is another spectacular HD disc from Pixar. I'll swear, there is so much detail in the images that you really forget you're watching an animated film. And the sound is terrific, too. Never too much, and the sound complements the timing of the jokes to perfection.

I think it's the most recent updates. They caused me some problems too, but my computer seems to be working fine now

Miss Dixie Bell celebrated her 5th birthday with family, friends, cake and ice cream and two new toys. . .a squeaky beer bottle and a squawking mallard. She is now fast asleep next to the computer. . .She thanks everyone, in her own way, for the brilliant birthday wishes shared here with her online family.

I am really impressed with an effort a group of high schoolers started several years ago and now two of them are in college and they are continuing the project.

The kids in this area have really taken to the project and it is called "Fill the Dome". They raise monies and collect food for the local food pantries. It is truly remarkable to see the floor of the Fargodome full from their efforts.

Folk Singer Taylor Mitchell Killed by Coyotes

A teenage folk singer was attacked and killed by two coyotes in a national park in eastern Canada.

Taylor Mitchell, 19, was attacked while she was hiking alone in Cape Breton Highlands Park, Nova Scotia, when she was attacked by two of the animals on Tuesday. She died of her wounds on Wednesday.

Nearby walkers heard her screams and alerted park rangers, who arrived on the scene and shot one of the animals. The other has yet to be found.

A police spokesperson said the two coyotes were "extremely aggressive" when rangers arrived on the scene.

"Coyotes are normally afraid of humans. This is a very irregular occurrence," Bridgit Leger, a spokeswoman for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, told Reuters news agency.

Mitchell was airlifted to hospital in Halifax but died there. Paul Maynard of Emergency Health Services said she had been admitted with multiple bite wounds on her body.

"Words can't begin to express the sadness and tragedy of losing such a sweet, compassionate, vibrant, and phenomenally talented young woman," Lisa Weitz, Mitchell's manager, said. "She just turned 19 two months ago, and was so excited about the future."

Mitchell's debut album 'For Your Consideration' had been recorded earlier this year and the artist had been on a tour of eastern Canada when the attack occurred.

"She was so young and talented -- her big dreams were a perfect match with her big, kind heart," said Michael Johnston, the album's producer.

Biologists said attacks by coyotes -- also known as prairie wolves -- were extremely rare because the animals were usually very wary of humans. The area of the park where the attack happened has now been blocked off as officials try to find out what caused the attack.

Since NBC has elected to drop TRAUMA after its original 13-episode order and bring CHUCK back earlier than planned and adding 5 more episodes to its order, looks like there will be something to watch on NBC on Mondays after all.

Nice!  I never watched "Trauma," so I'm not heartbroken about that, but I love "Chuck."

Grey's Anatomy was very different tonight.  I think things are going to calm down from the mania of the merger. I'm curious to see how it will all shake out

We're a hit! I have so much to tell, from the gypsy robe ceremony to the party that I will do it all tomorrow. The show was to begin at 6:45 but we began a little after 7 pm. Among the audience: Arlene Dahl, Trevor Nunn, Bran Dennehy, Judy Blazer, Rob Fisher and a lot of family and friends. Seeing the show was a lot like seeing the final performance of Lansbiry and Cariou in SWEENEY TODD: every moment, every entrance got applause; Terri White's "Necessity" and the gospel quartet on "The Begat" stopped the show dead. The 15-20 minute intermission must has lasted 30 minutes; the ailes were packed with folk tryng to hit the bar or the johns and being stck in enormous traffic jams. After the show I ran backstage to join everyone in a champagne toast, and then it was off to the party. The word late in the evening was that we're getting pretty solid raves and I am ecstatic over it. I picked up opening night Playbills for DRs George, TCB, and JRand59. I think a loy of the reviews we deserved and some of them are HHW vibes doing their best.

I'm tipsy and very tired so I'll continue the story tomorrow. Thanks for posting the reviews online, DR JRand59! I can't wait to read them all.

Had a great evening at Royce Hall with R. Crumb.

I did buy "The Book of Genesis".  It took 4 years to draw.   The original pages are on display at the Hammer Museum right now.  After the book was published he found one mistake on one page, had the museum take it off the wall so he could fix it.   Also bought "Heros of Blues, Jazz and Country, which includes a cd from his collection of 78RPM records from 1927-1931.
