Work contiunes apace until November 25th.
I have a presentation tomorrow morning for the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and next week I have two presentations, one for Elma Philanthropies and one for the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.
I have finished my annual big project. It now rests in the hands of my supervisor. I can only hope that for the first time in approximately 10 years the project will be completely and totally finished before I leave for vacation. For any number of reasons that has never happened but this year the odds look good. One can only hope.
I have my annual performance evaluation coming up. No date has been set but it will happen before I go on vacation. As far as I'm concerned it is a massive waste of time and energy for everyone involved, but then that's only my opinion.
The annual
Stephen J. Falat Holiday Basket Project (http://www.actorsequity.org/NewsMedia/news2009/oct22.falatbasketproject.asp)
doesn't begin this year until December 4th (a bit later than usual due to the late date of Thanksgiving) so I actually have a few real days of vacation until the volunteer work begins. We set up on December 4th and then begin filling the bags on December 7th. That takes approximately 2 weeks, depending on how many bags need to be filled. After that I have a whole two weeks for us (Anthony and me).
That's the news from lower Fifth Avenue.

Whew - now I know why Billy Fury recorded mostly covers of American Hits. Of all the 26 songs on this Adam Faith cd, there are only 2 that I like. The rest are like B sides.
They must have sent the good stuff to Cliffie Richards first, and Adam got what Cliffie didn't like.

Good m orning!
Heavy rains here this morning, so the walk is having to be done in stages on the treadmill throughout the day. At least it's not super cold. That helps considerably.
-
I must confess I will be glad to be finished with SCRUBS. The show's mix of silly and serious just doesn't sit well with me any more (it used to be one of my favorite shows, but two or three people overact so shamefully that the mixture of acting styles and storylines just grates on me.)
-
I only have NCIS: LA on the DVR which I'll watch as I eat lunch today, so I have no idea what I'll watch tonight for leisure viewing before GLEE comes on. I don't even know if it'll be something unopened on the stack or a revisit to a favorite film. I'll just have to see what I'm in the mood for.
-
Good morning, all! Yes, indeedy, today is a Federal Holiday: no mail. While it irks me, I don't know how our DR MattH will survive. I think he and I are the most manic DRs about postal delivery.
The cold continues its move through my system, and I do have the majority of my voice back. The gunk in my head which felt like concrete is now breaking up and, in general, I feel pretty good.
Today, I am stuck here awaiting an Office Depot delivery of paper, ink and bindng clips. I need to run down to Staples to pick up some things I left yesterday to be spiral-bound. Between Messrs Moross and Kern, I have plenty of work on my desk today.

I must be off.

My DH Richard, a proud veteran, usually participates as an Honor Guard member in Veteran's Day ceremonies. However, today he's going to the funeral of a veteran. John (http://www.legacy.com/middletown/Obituaries.asp?Page=LifeStory&PersonID=135695091) was the husband of a former teaching colleague of Richard's and he masterfully installed the carpeting in our family room about 15 years ago.
Our son is spending Veteran's Day in 8 hours of clinical EMT practice - 4 in the ER at Kettering Medical Center and 4 at Middletown Fire Department's Station 81.

I guess I'm more "Occasional Reader" than "Dear Reader" (though I do read Bruce's notes daily, I don't get into the forums to post)...
Hi everyone!
-
For anyone interested, here is a link to my father's rather detailed account of one of the more important 60th Infantry campaigns in WWII, the battle to take Port Lyautey:
http://www.60thinfantry.com/History%20from%20Port%20Lyautey%20to%20July%203,%201943.pdf (http://www.60thinfantry.com/History%20from%20Port%20Lyautey%20to%20July%203,%201943.pdf)
-
My father somehow forgot to mention in these memoirs that one of his first official acts was "liberating" the Lyautey house of ill repute, which was then evidently visited with great regularity by his soldiers. :)
-
This is, perhaps, the genesis of my first grade article which I've mentioned here where, having learned to spell phonetically, I talked about my Dad being in the whore.
-
This is the beautiful historic Fort Douglas in Salt Lake City which my father prevented from being raized in the 1970s. He was Senior Officer there for more than 40 years:
http://www.fortdouglas.org/
That is the General M.B. Kauffman building which houses the Military Museum which he founded and in front of which I and my family are standing in our avatar pic.
-
And finally here is the Wikipedia article on Fort Douglas, with a gorgeous picture of the Museum snowclad. The article mentions my father in the 1945-1991 section:

Off to spend time with my mother, who was a "Rosie the Riveter" during World War II...bye for now.

I think my father was most famaous for the battle to take back the Sitka, Alaska Liquor Store in 1944.

I have two priority mail packages to send. I was just halfway out the door when I remembered there is no postal service today. Oy.
-
Hi everyone!
Hello!!! :)
-
Picked up the package and am awaiting arrival of person to hook it up - it's an all-region Blu-Ray player so I can finally play my all-region Blu-Ray discs. Pretty inexpensive, but unlike my all-region DVD player, this you have to enter a code every time you want to play an all-region Blu or DVD - it's one code and I'm hoping it works simply. I actually had to Google to find the code - they didn't include it with the player, which is a little odd to me - is one just supposed to DIVINE it? Mr. Set Up Man will be here at twelve-thirty and we'll see how it all works then.
-
Heard back re region codes - they forgot to put them in the box! Brilliant. They're coming via USPS and they say I'll have them tomorrow or Friday. Very annoying. However, I found them online and will probably give that a whirl to see if it works.

We're back from a drive by of an amazing property sort of semi-out in the country. It's on 14 acres and the house has (no I'm not kidding) over 8000 sf. (A lot of that is an amazing Olympic sized indoor swimming pool). The owners lost the property, it's been foreclosed and the bank owns it now and they're asking less than half of what it was listed for originally. It definitely needs some spit and polish, but it's interesting enough I've asked my realtor to schedule a walkthrough for Friday. The views were spectacular.

I've been having an online - and offline - feud with a woman who thinks she is the Victor Herbert Foundation. Beware!
For reasons I cannot divulge since it would reveal her name, I call her the Apple Heiress.
In college we had a rather nymphomaniacal student who worked summers at a dairy. We called her the Derrierress. Actually she would have been a nymphomaniac if we could have slowed her down. There were two in the theatre dept as I recall, and one of them now lives four blocks from me. I think she was the first open bisexual I ever knew.

Before I started cooking lunch, I did indeed have time to get the remaining SCRUBS episodes watched. I got a little sentimental over the last episode. I did watche the show for at least five seasons, and it was somewhat sad to say goodbye to it. When it comes back at midseason, I don't believe it will be at the hospital at all.

Glad to be inside today.

I watched last night's NCIS: LA while I ate lunch. One of the better episodes thus far. Still not much mystery to the show which makes it less likely to stay on my to-watch list if other shows begin to turn up on Tuesday night. Right now, there isn't much of a choice for me.

I then watched all of the bonus features on disc two. They included a 20-minute behind-the-scenes look at the making of the two episodes in the Bahamas (where the janitor got married).
I also had to go back and copy dow all of the audio commentary personnel from the commentaries. 16 of the 19 episodes had commentaries.
-
Then I put in AN AMERICAN IN PARIS on Blu-ray. I hadn't seen it in a while and enjoyed the color, singing, and dancing very much. Very good movie to just weg out watching.
-
I ended my afternoon watching the 42-minute making of documentary for the film. I know I watched this when I reviewed the disc, but I honestly had only vague memories of it.

The important question: Is there a pond?

No, that's the best part--just a goodly lawn area that we can easily fence for a dog run. The rest is farmland or just native grasses/bushes. This all may be premature as I haven't actually been inside yet and the place may be a wreck. Plus it's not very close to any bus stops for Betsy's work commute which may necessitate some marital negotiating. :)
-
Some TV news that will disappoint some DRs:
Fox has canceled DOLLHOUSE. Plans are still to finish production on the 13 ordered episodes, but no more will be done. Fox said they planned to show all 13 episodes at some point during the season.
Kelsey Grammer's HANK has been taken off the air by ABC. The 8 p.m. half hour will be filled by reruns and animated specials until UGLY BETTY moves into the spot later in the season.
Of course, ABC's entire comedy block is preempted tonight for the CMA Awards.

I am back from taking my mother to the eye doctor, who told her that there's not much to be done for macular degeneration (not what she wanted to hear). We also went to the local garden center, where she bought an amaryllis bulb, and to a local restaurant, where she bought lunch. After I took her home, I went to visit my aunt, who's 10 years younger than Mom, but acts about 10 years older.

In other news...
I finally met up with my cousin, Christina, earlier today. She's back in town for a week or so visiting from Seattle - some work, some play, lots of boyfriend. -Or something like that. We ended up spending a good chunk of time walking around the Upper West Side - a part of town she hadn't explored yet. So, while she shopped, I waited and/or approved/disapproved her clothing choices. ;)
*There were some crazy sales at Urban Outfitters, and she managed to walk out of there with a couple of nice items, all for under $30. If they were not on sale, they would have cost here about $250.

I think DR GINNY has the answer to what ails us.

And, yes, today was a "Federal Holiday". No mail, no banks - although, some banks were open today, but "11/11/09" was not an "official banking day". But, as others have already discovered, UPS, FedEx, etc., were open today.
-
As for egg salad: It's all about the proper ratio of chopped, boiled eggs to mayo. The mayo should really just bind all the ingredients together, not drown them. -Although, some people do prefer a "wetter" egg salad.
*And it's always puzzled me whenever I order an egg salad sandwich - or tuna or chicken salad sandwich for that matter - and it's prepared with additional mayo on the bread.

I think it was during a master class with pianist/accompanist/vocal coach, Warren Jones, where he stressed that singers should always do a word-for-word translation of the texts they are singing. The classic example he noted was from Puccini's Madama Butterfly. There is a moment went Cio-Cio San sings - at least in the literal, word-for-word translation - "What shall I do with a man like this?" -Of course, when most sopranos sing that line, they usually make the typical geisha hand-gesture - which looks very much like the one Dr. Ruth is making in that pic.
:)

Everyone in my family wore them in the 1950s. I haven't even seen one in years.
the vets still sell them here. I didn't go anywhere that they are usually sold (grocery stores, walmart etc) so I don't know if they were out there today, but I got on on Memorial Day

I prefer it with extra mayo on the bread!
Ditto!
-
On my way home this afternoon, I had to wait in traffic for an ambulance to pass on its way to the hospital. Wonder if my son was in it - not as the patient, but as an EMT-in-training. It was about half an hour after his shift started with our local fire department.
-
*And it's always puzzled me whenever I order an egg salad sandwich - or tuna or chicken salad sandwich for that matter - and it's prepared with additional mayo on the bread.

To each his/her own. :)
At Panera, they put mustard on the bread when they make a chicken or tuna salad sandwich :P
And butter on ANY sandwich :P :P :P
Is Panera a British owned compant-referring to the butter on a sandwich. I don;t get the extra mustard at all.

I am very, very sleepy this afternoon.

Sorry, DR Jane - my reference to butter on sandwiches was unrelated to Panera. I'm not thinking too clearly tonight.

My question for Ask BK Day is actually for DR Elmore.
Dear DR Elmore,
When you arrange a song, do you hear all the parts in your head at once? Or do you have to try them all out one at a time?
-
An HHW Pool Party! YES!

I'm glad David is feeling some relief. Vibes to him that the test results all come back good!

This morning was quite fun. I got to go through the new office space with the painter again. We made a few changes to our previous plan and I really can't wait to see it when it's done. The carpenter has recovered from his flu and was there haning drywall in the waiting room area.

Exactly! And if the bread is fresh and not dried out, then it would not need any extra mayo! -And mayo on dried out bread is still "mayo on dried out bread".

My question for Ask BK Day is actually for DR Elmore.
Dear DR Elmore,
When you arrange a song, do you hear all the parts in your head at once? Or do you have to try them all out one at a time?
It's even more complicated than you could imagine, DR Laura; I sort of hear them as I see them written on the score paper. It's a very abstract way of working. At times I feel like a spiritualist doing "automatic writing," as though something takes over and say "this is what you hear," and at other times I wait for something to come along and say "you have to put down something." So you do, and hope it can be fixed in rehearsal.

Ask BK:
What was it like working with Lauren Bacall on her duet with Brent?
Kevin
While I've heard horror stories about Miss Bacall, my experience with her was fantastic. A real pro, easy to work with, she even took direction perfectly. I also had a fantastic dinner with her and Brent and it was a pretty great and fun session.

Larry, is it a given that there will be an arranger in the loop between the composer and yourself? Is there much overlap between the arranging and the orchestrating? Or does it just all depend?
-
How Firm a Foundation... :D
-
Busy but fun day. All-region Blu is hooked up and working fine. As long as I only run region B Blu-Rays, I don't have to enter or reset any codes, so that's easy. Tape transfers went great - as it turns out the composer had done an album mock-up and we're using that, so that whole thing suddenly became very easy indeed. Then I had a sandwich and now I'm home and ready to finish Logan's Run.

I do not like egg salad. Period.

Larry, is it a given that there will be an arranger in the loop between the composer and yourself? Is there much overlap between the arranging and the orchestrating? Or does it just all depend?
It all depends on the project, DR Jeanne. Sometimes the composer gives you a full piano copy to use and sometimes the composer gives you a rough sketch and his ideas for you to expand. On a lot of BK's albums, he and the musical director worked out the arrangements for me to work from. When I worked for the Men's Chorus, I did a choral arrangement and the accompaniment for rehearsal and two months later did an orchestration. On FINIAN'S RAINBOW, except for the last cue that I wrote with Joshie, everything was written by Rob Berman abd all I had to do was score it to sound as though Don Walker or Russell Bennett wrote it in 1947. Josh and I took Rob's original idea for the final cue, which sounded too unlike the rest of the score and improved it for him.
I did a theatre job over ten years years ago where I was given nothing but lead sheets, and I had no idea what the score should sound like because the writers were nice people but no help at all. I was out of town at the theatre for six weeks working on the production. I spent two days walking around rehearsals terrified to begin anything because I DID NOT KNOW WHAT THE SHOW SHOULD SOUND LIKE and no one was any help. I'd go to one rehearsal where they were coaching singers and the pianist played it like a rock song, and then I'd go to a dance rehearsal where the same lead sheet sounded like dum-de-dum-de-dum. After two days of hearing from the writers "we can't wait to hear what you do" I thought, okay, I have freeze this show and they're going to fire me after the first band rehearsal. I sat down and wrote all the arrangements as I orchestrated thinking, day after Thanksgiving they're gonna sack my ass. Well, at the sitzprobe, the day after Thanksgiving, the band read dwn the opening number, the ensemble sang it and the director burst into tears and said, "It's wonderful!" They owe me big.

Two flights. Seattle to London; then London to Rome. We sail from just outside of Rome.

I make egg salad with a little onion and sliced or chopped olives and take to work to snack on with crackers.

When I went back down, I picked TWISTER on Blu-ray off the to-watch shelf. Oh, my, the Dolby TrueHD sound just about lifted the roof off my house. Incredible, powerful sound and VERY spacious. Reference quality for sure.
The improved clarity of the visuals makes some of the tornados look very fake. (Some of the effects are still very impressive.)
It's a fun popcorn movie with some wonderful folks in small roles like Jeremy Davies and Philip Seymour Hoffman and Lois Smith and Cary Elwes. Nice to see it again.

Tomorrow I think I'm going to do another Criterion disc, a violent gangster saga I've never seen before GOMORRAH. I have it on both DVD and Blu-ray, so I'll do the DVD first.
This weekend, I've got to work on a Blu-ray box set of three Kevin Smith films: CLERKS, CHASING AMY, and JAY AND SILENT BOB STRIKE BACK. I have not seen the latter two.

Thanks for all the HHW vibes!! Just got news that David also spoke to a urologist today who said his problem is some sort of genetic skin flap or something like that. It was a spur of the moment trip - my mum's reunion committee is meeting tomorrow and one of her classmates and her husband came down to help get some things together. The husband, Leo, suddenly said, "Let's go to the casino." I said, "I'm putting on my shoes." He said, "You're driving," and we were out the door. When we got there, I said, "I forget to grab my camera."
-
Finished with Logan's Run and am now watching the film with the score that I transfered this afternoon. I think there will be several cues that went unused, although the entire score seems to be pretty short - around thirty minutes. However we had some bonus material - the composer tapes has what the composer originally wrote for the main title, which differs from the film - what's in the film isn't on the tapes, but I can grab it from the DVD - it's totally clean.

When I went to Vegas with my mom, she loved the dollar table Black Jack and the penny slot machines. That was six years ago. I looked last time I was in Vegas (summer 2008) and those bargain opportunities to lose your money seemed scarce.

Tonight's "Glee" was a very good episode. I loved the opening number, "Dancing With Myself (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2TdWfhG_GlY)," a solo by Artie.

Now, I'm watching last night's "V."

Which was also featured on last Friday's Ugly Betty.

I make my egg salad "robust" (not juicy). This is fine when using a fine grained moist bread like whole wheat - (or God Forbid Wonder Bread) - but when building on coarser grained breads like sour dough a schmear of Mayo on the bread helps hold the sandwich together.

Of course I also mix mustard with my mayo for egg, tuna, ham or chicken salads.
