The first really controversial (non-rated, Catholic Church condemned) movie I saw was the Banned-in-Boston: "The Moon Is Blue".
Since I had already seen the play, courtesy of my local priest taking me with him on date with his fiance, I already knew that the fuss was much ado about nothing.
In my youth, the Adult Entertainment we teens attempted to crash was live Burlesque (at the seedy Troc in the tenderloin by Chinatown). Philadelphia even attempted to generate a classy renaissance of the Burlie Q by staging classy acts like Sally Rand and Lily St Cyr at an uptown movie palace (The Carmen). Unfortunately, the "upgrade" had some class but lost all the humor of the comic acts and the "atmosphere" of the theatre vendors hawking their wares during the show. Alas, the Carmen venue never fully captured the unique aroma of the Troc.
The best recreation of those waning days of Burlesque was "Sugar Babies".

Greetings all and sundry (or is that sundried).
I have my presentation at 10:00am so I'm sitting here in a shirt and tie with my 1958 Mickey Mouse Tie Clip (in excellent shape for a 51 year old piece of jewelry).
I will be reviewing the contents of the presentation as the early morning moves along.
I don't know if he'll log in before he leaves for Rome but best wishes for a grand vacation to our own Eye Tal ian, Mr. TCB, which is almost The Country's Best Yogurt, but not quite.

Another Jukebox musical. I really hate this trend no matter how good a show it may be. If I want to hear actors playing other singers I think I'd listen to the original recordings.
It also seems that this show was put together in responds to the success of the Jersey Boys.
I hope I am wrong and this show is just as good or better than Jersey Boys

I had nothing else to watch last night so I also watched GLEE for the first time in weeks. I still don't care for it. The problem with Sue's revelation is that they have no where to go now with her character. She had been a juggernaut of an adversary for the Matthew Morrison character but she will never be as effective now. If this was a movie or play, I could understand such a character development. But to do a reveal like this so soon in an ongoing TV series undermines her wickedness.
I did find it interesting that they had some focus on the wheelchair-bound kid and the Asian girl, since I don't think I've ever heard them utter a single line before (again, I've not watched since the fourth episode, so I don't know what's been happening.)

I don't think the revelation about Sue ruins her character at all. I think it shows despite her ornery disposition, despotism, and extreme conservatism, she has a heart. It may be reserved for a very, very few in her life (she did get involved in dating the male anchor at her station for a while, but that stopped when Sue caught him with other women), but it's there, and it helps to make her one step removed from the stereotypical female Simon Legree she's been pretty much since the series started. Doing shows like last night's begins to add some shadings to the colors of many of the characters (Puck became more appealing, Artie finally had a moment, Kurt sacrificed his diva moment for his dad's sake) that *I* found very appealing.
But the show isn't for everyone and never will be.

Travel and fun vibes for DR TCB as he starts his journey!

I am still unsure of today's work project which, as always, depends on what the mail brings. At the present moment, I plan to work today on Criterion's DVD release of GOMORRAH (I have the Blu-ray, too, but won't get to it until late next week), but if any of Fox's late discs arrive, it'll be pushed back to a later date (doesn't come out until November 24th).

TOD:
I think the first adult movie I ever saw was BLOW-UP. I had never seen naked female breasts before, so that was a wake-up call!
BTW, the night I went to see BLOW-UP (alone, no friends wanted to go), my parents had the neighbors over to play bridge. My going to BLOW-UP came up during the game, and they were SHOCKED my parents would allow me to see it. These same neighbors had the same reaction when my parents allowed me to go to WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF? alone. I was never quite sure what these neighbors were trying to protect me from.
I eagerly told my parents about both movies when I got back home. Looking back, I realize how fortunate I was to have their complete trust in such matters. They knew I loved movies, and I was already writing about them for my high school newspaper, so it was a no brainer for them. Imagine if I had been banned from seeing those films!

TOD: Reading some of the other film titles DRs have offered, it makes me wonder just how jaded I was before I was out of high school!!!
I wasn't allowed to see "Tom Jones"! How do you like THEM apples. Only film I was ever "banned" from seeing, though.
I guess the film that rather shocked me the first time I saw it (being a bit out of the Hollywood mainstream, not to mention anything "I" knew) was "Midnight Cowboy". It wasn't a long-lasting or profound shock.
Outside of the language, "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf" wasn't as shocking as some folks made it out to be. Martha was a total pill, but that's part of her charm I guess.
-
Last night's "Glee" -- feh. I was rather looking forward to the battling divas doing "Defying Gravity". Who knew they could beat it to death being so reptitious with a couple of verses? Ugh.
I like the actors. The wheelchair number, though, was so-so. And there was certainly nothing I could see that any organization should get so het-up about over its depiction of wheelchair-bound people. It seemed rather sensitive, open and honest.
They cannot, of course, touch base on everything. But honestly, how many shows have EVER tried to raise that kind of awareness? And they got a few face-slaps for that?
This country is way over the top in PC consciousness. Bitchslaps all around to the protesters.

I liked parts a lot and disliked other parts. I loved how they showed rachel and kurt singing (i love when they go back and forth from one person to the other). I loved watching kurt and his dad, the whole gay story, and what kurt did. I liked sue. I liked wheelchair boy and asian girl. And even some of the wheelchair stuff.
but it seemed very weird to me not to show jayma mays at all. And i'm not digging much to do with the pregnancy story. Although why does quinn need to pay the bills? Isn't she giving the baby up to looney woman?
-
Not the movie versions, but two books that later became films raised my mother's ire: PORTNOY'S COMPLAINT which I got from Doubleday Book Club when I was probably 12. For some reason she was even more exercised (exorcised?) about ROSEMARY'S BABY, which she finally allowed me to read with the understanding that if I had any questions, I had to ask my father, LOL. The only question I had was the word "buttocks"--having learned to spell phonetically and all, I had thought that word was spelled "butex" due to the Utahn pronunciation I had grown up with. :)

The plea bargain in the balloon case is a joke, if true. Not that I wish anyone jail time, because I don't, but they just serve probation - it's the reason: to keep the loving family together. As for the Topic of the Day...
Hmmm...
My parents were somewhat protective of me and my brothers when we were growing up, however, they did like to go to the movies - and take us along when possible. They also really liked going to drive-ins. Sometimes the double-features were family-friendly, and sometimes they were not. For example, I seem to remember a double-feature of "Jaws" and "Orca". And I guess even seeing "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" was kind of shocking to me at age nine.
-
As for last night's "Glee"....
-I certainly hope that none of those students have to go for a drug test anytime soon. ;)
-I liked that version of "Defying Gravity", and, yes, it may have seemed a bit repetitious, but since they cut the little interludes, well... -I think there are full versions available on iTunes sung by each actor/actress, as well as a full duet version with harmony. Again, I think.
-It was also very nice to hear that the "auto-tune" was turned down a bit for last night's vocals. There was still some "processing", but it didn't annoy me last night as much as it has in past episodes.

A. The judge does not need to accept the plea bargain - there is still some discussion of adding 30-90 days jail time.
B. The agreement reportedly bars the Heene's from doing any TV shows.

A tale to toast Kimmel's Kockles:
Pumped-up prices: $4 per gallon gasoline may be coming in 2010 (http://www.dailyfinance.com/2009/11/12/pumped-up-prices-4-per-gallon-gasoline-may-be-coming-in-2010/?icid=main|htmlws-main-n|dl4|link6|http%3A%2F%2Fwww.dailyfinance.com%2F2009%2F11%2F12%2Fpumped-up-prices-4-per-gallon-gasoline-may-be-coming-in-2010%2F)
...
Gasoline demand down, but the price is up. What's going on here? Well, part of the reason is the price of oil, currently around $80 per barrel. Oil -- boosted by the weak dollar and by likely increasing global oil demand during the economic recovery -- has essentially doubled since hitting a post-leverage boom low of about $35 per barrel a year ago.
The other part concerns the business of refining and the nation's refinery system. With oil prices high and gasoline demand low, the "crack spread" -- basically the difference between what refiners pay for oil and the total revenue received for products created from a barrel of crude -- has been low. That's prompted many refineries to reduce capacity: if a refiner can't earn a decent profit refining crude into gasoline (and other products), the company stops refining it.
Note: the less efficient refiners are the first to cut production; to meet rising gas demands the price must rise enough to make the less efficient producers profitable – which will in turn make the more efficient producers VERY profitable.
...

It is a cold, raw, rainy day outside. Having to go from house to car to restaurant to car to home (just that little bit out in the elements) was torture. I hate days like this, but I guess they have to be endured to have the gorgeous ones that I appreciate now all the more.

When I looked out the window this morning there was snow on the mountains. I can no longer see the top of the mountains to tell you if the snow is still there. It has been raining on and off all morning, not enough to ruin our hike.
-
Beofre I left for lunch I finished DIAL 'M' FOR MURDER and also watched the making of documentary (with Peter Bogdanovich doing his lame Hitchcock impression).
-
When I got in from lunch, I immediately started on GOMORRAH since it's 137 minutes long. I was able to get it watched.
Very violent but riveting from beginning to end. The violence is cleverly manipulated. We get some very soon after the movie begins. Then, it's almost an hour before something really awful happens, and one gets lulled into relaxation and then it begins again.
There are five stories being told in splintered plotting, so the jumps between stories keeps the viewer on his toes completely. Took me a while to keep a couple of stories separated because the main characters looked so much alike.
-
More photos of our daily hike.

Don't walk around in tight shorts begging for pinches and don't cruise the taxi drivers, like some DRs whose initials are MBarnum, are prone to do. You are not Mrs Stone.
All of my shorts are tight. They didn't start out that way, but I guess they shrunk.
-
Like MattH, I am awash in review screeners. Three large boxes have arrived in the past two days. MBarnum, I got three Bollywood titles. Do you know anything about:
PARTNER
MUNNA BHAI
BHOOL BHULAIYAA
-
DR Matt H I'm not sure if we will be watching BONES much longer. We should have liked the episode with the chicken farm & instead found it so poorly written it was annoying.
-
DR TCB shouldn't you have left already?
-
Sherlock under a canopy.
-
As for the Topic of the Day...
NINE!
-
...And Cheyenne Jackson and Michael Feinstein also performed during the fourth hour of "The Today Show" with Kathie Lee and Hoda.
-
Cheyenne Jackson in the L.A. Times (http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/news/la-et-cheyenne-jackson12-2009nov12,0,6899870.story?page=1)
(http://www.latimes.com/media/photo/2009-11/50439557.jpg)
I watched Cheyenne and Kate Baldwin yesterday on The View in HD. I thought it very funny how his mic was placed.
Where?
-
DR TCB shouldn't you have left already?
Nope, Jane. I wa going to leave for the airport at 2:30, but have moved that to 3:00.
-
Sherlock under a canopy.
He got married?
-
The boys came home with some antibiotics, so they'll be with us another week.

Sherlock under a canopy.
He got married?
;D
-
The boys came home with some antibiotics, so they'll be with us another week.
What is it this time?
-
DR TCB I had thought 2:20 was the time of departure. I hope you can get some sleep tonight.
-
Since they were sick as babies and surgery lowers their resistance to things, they want to be careful. The other two weren't nearly as sick.
-
DR TCB I had thought 2:20 was the time of departure. I hope you can get some sleep tonight.
Nope. The plane leaves at 6:30 p.m. and arrives in London at noon. There is an eight hour time difference.
-

I'm relieved it isn't something new.
-
I must hop off-line now and get some writing done. Then, I'll head back down to watch disc two in the GOMORROAH set.
WBBL.
-
DR TCB I hope you are wrong and do get some sleep on the plane. Just don't forget to do stretches occasionally & walk around some.
-
Sherlock pictures always make my day!
-
Continued travel vibes to Signor TCB.
-
Something I didn't know......Jared Harris who plays Brit Lane Pryce on MAD MEN is the son of Richard (King Arthur) Harris.
-

That should have said, "Nope the filight leaves at 6:30." As for sleeping on the plane, that is a YES.
-
Thanks for the Sherlock photos, Jane.
-
My wishes for a truly WONDERFUL vacation, TCB!
-

Good to hear :D Have good flights and sleep well!

Thank you DR JRand and my pleasure DR Laura.
-
Beautiful photos, DR Jane - Sherlock looks BIG!
-
Watching a NGEO special on Royal Caribbean's Freedom of the Seas cruise ship. Amazing organization....beautiful design.
-
Back from a splendidly splendid lunch with the MGM lady - more good news came out it - a release I thought wasn't possible is now possible.
-
At long last page six.
-
Goodbye, one and all. I am off (way off)!
-
Oh, Lord, TCB's up and gone to Rome and left his computer on. :)
-
Goodbye, one and all. I am off (way off)!
Have a wonderful trip and take lots of pictures!!
-
I believe Mr Jackson's story starts on 30 ROCK tonight.
Where WAS his microphone, DR DtM?
-
Sherlock looks BIG!
.
Not compared to the Great Dane he played with today :)
Thanks for the compliment.
-
Thanks to BK for answering my Lauren Bacall question.
I think Brent's CD is fantastic--I've listened to it over and over!
DR Elmore--I'm going to see Finian's Rainbow Saturday--I'm really looking forward to it!

Kevin
Lucky you! :)

Good Evening!
It really is sort of amazing just how much work one can get done when one turns off the computer and the iPhone.
::)
-
Although, "work" in this case means: grocery shopping, cooking dinner, washing dishes and performing some long overdue "routine" computer maintenance.
-
Thankfully - and luckily - I noticed the "Milk Sale" sign in the window of the bodega next door to the grocery store. They were selling 1/2 gallons for $1.49, and gallons for $1.99! -I think they may be in a "milk price war" with the new bodega that just opened across the street.
-
As for controversial films, I was allowed to see WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOLF? on its initial release. I had already seen DOCTOR ZHIVAGO.
BUT, I was forbidden to see neither PLANET OF THE APES (!) nor ROSEMARY'S BABY.
I did sneak out with neighbors to see the former. I caught up with the latter not long after its first run.
At the height of 70s 'porno chic" an older cousin, by ten years, and her husband and I went to a double feature of DEEP THROAT and THE DEVIL IN MISS JONES.
-
The graphics on Keith’s new computer game, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, are awesome!! When I can hear it over the fighting, I’m enjoying the music composed by Hans Zimmer.
-
I was not aware DOCTOR ZHIVAGO was considered a controversial film.

Did he get the night vision goggles version, as Gabe did? :)

The plea bargain in the balloon case is a joke, if true. Not that I wish anyone jail time, because I don't, but they just serve probation - it's the reason: to keep the loving family together. Sorry, these people have instilled in their children the most warped sense of what family is and if that's loving and/or healthy then I don't know anything about family. So, let's see - they'll get probation. Fine. How long until they sell the story to some idiot, disgusting TV producer? And make a ton of money. Which is why they did it. Which is why the plea bargain should include the inability to exploit this crap in ANY manner at ANY time. That would be a proper sentence.
I haven't heard of they have to pay restitution. They could easily be ordered to reimburse law enforcement for the cost of searching etc
-
I was not aware DOCTOR ZHIVAGO was considered a controversial film.
I was ten years old when I saw it.

...And the closing of the airport too!

Keith is playing the PC version which has night vision as part of the software.
-

Still don't get it-lol
-
Keith thinks it might have been a boring film for a ten year old, I disagree. I suppose the affair could have been a problem back then ;) If would not have wanted my 10 year old to read the book.
-
I'm off now to work concessions for Warren Miller's Dynasty (http://www.washingtoncenter.org/season/season_detail.asp?event_id=1131), in its first of three showings at the Washington Center for the Performing Arts. It's going to be a madhouse...in a good way! I set my DVR to record "Fringe" and the ABC line-up, so hopefully there won't be any problem like last Thursday when NOTHING recorded. But, at least I can watch these shows on-line if something does go wrong.
Until later!

Like MattH, I am awash in review screeners. Three large boxes have arrived in the past two days. MBarnum, I got three Bollywood titles. Do you know anything about:
PARTNER
MUNNA BHAI
BHOOL BHULAIYAA
Why yes I do!
Bhool Bhulaiyaa is a haunted house film that I absolutely loved!
if MUNNA BHAI is actually Lage Raho Munna Bhai, then it is a comedy that everyone seems to love, except me. I didn't much care for it. Howver, your mileage may vary.
PARTNER is another comedy, which I saw at the theater. It was Ok, but nothing special, as far as I was concerned. But it was a hit.
-
I got my UNIVERSAL CULT HORROR COLLECTION in the mail today. Am I the only HHWer who bought it? The movies include:
HOUSE OF HORRORS (1946)
MURDERS IN THE ZOO (1933)
THE MAD DOCTOR OF MARKET STREET (1942)
THE MAD GHOUL (19430
THE STRANGE CASE OF DR RX (1942)
I look forward to this being my Friday movie viewing!
-
We just had us a real LA rainfall - it lasted approximately seventeen seconds.
-
Bruce I remember playing in the rain, lots of rain with puddles that went up to my knees. Granted I was pretty young when the puddles reached my knees.
-
I just got off the phone & have made plans to meet a new friend tomorrow for lunch at the Indian restaurant. I'm excited she suggested it. I haven't eaten there as I can never get anyone to go with me.In the small world category, this new friend moved here from down the road where we lived in Michigan. She also went to our Temple, only switching there after we had left.
-
Lovely hike/Sherlock photos, DR Jane!!!!
-
Dang, I would have loved to see that special on the new [largest ever] cruise ship. I wonder if they'll repeat it?
-
I got all of those bonus features for GOMORRAH watched, but there were easily two hours' worth of them (actually a little more than two hours). Very interesting, and the 62 documentary on the making of the movie might help people who have a hard time differentiating the storylines from one another since it talks about the five separate stories separately.
-
I had time to zip through today's soaps. Nothing on OLTL and I've been told there will be nothing on Friday either.
ATWT did finally bring Luke, Mason, and Noah back to continue the BIG triangle that goes nowhere story. And the Damien-Lily-Meg story couldn't be any stupider.
-
One question before I go:
Have there been any reviews posted anywhere for the upcoming Blu Ray release of Gone With the Wind and will Target (or someone) be selling a non premium set like Target did with the Wizard of Oz?
-
I enjoyed BONES tonight. Loved that the "L" word is finally out on the table and that Booth at least acknowledges it.
Stephen Fry has lost a TON of weight! He was back as a guest star playing psychiatrist turned chef Gordon Gordon.
The murder mystery was pretty easy to solve, but I still enjoyed the interaction with the principals.
-
Tomorrow I am going in for my leg operation. I could use as many quick healing vibes as possible.
Thanks to all

I have had my eyes out for the same information, DR Michael, and so far, there has been no information to that effect. I'll post here if I find out something. I hope you will do the same if you learn anything.
-

All the best wishes go with you during and after your operation!!

QUICK HEALING VIBES TO MICHAEL S ~~~~~~~~~~
-
GREY'S ANATOMY annoyed me more than a little bit tonight.
Not enough about patients and too much about personal angst. I wanted to throw a lamp at Izzie and was SO disappointed at the cliched writing for the new doctor/Christina dynamic. I just knew the new doc would be able to put Christina in her place after initially earning her disrespect. Shoddy, unimaginative writing.
-
Weatherman tonight "Today there was no sun until after sunset"
-
MattH I agree with you about Grey's Anatomy.
-
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Health Vibes to DR Michael S! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
-
Tiiiiiiired.
-
I have finally got review posted and am now ready for bed. I certainly hope tomorrow is drier and sunnier.
Good night!
Vibes to Michael S! ~~~~~~~~~
Page seven? This will NOT do, oh, no, this will not do.
Somewhere in my apartment is a half eaten apple and now I can't find it.
Maybe it's in the trash mass twice the size of Texas floating in the ocean.
-
VIBES FOR EVERYONE WHO NEEDS THEM. ;)
-
We had rain in LA, how did I miss that.
-
Hi George.
-
Goodnight everyone.
I'm switching computers Friday night. Hope my downsizing works. I'm giving the Dell to my kid living at Grandma's and plugging in my dad's old laptop. If I don't check in, it didn't work.
Then I'll be forced to connect the IMac to the internet, which I do not want to do. The screen is too large.
-
Well that was too much information from me. Time to sleep.
HAPPY WEEKEND. :) ;) ;D 8)
-
I was not aware DOCTOR ZHIVAGO was considered a controversial film.
I was ten years old when I saw it.
Still don't get it-lol
It was rated PG-13 because of mature themes...but, I, too, don't get what might have been shocking about it.
-
We had rain in LA, how did I miss that.
Maybe you were in the ladies room?
