Well, you've read the notes, the notes were short because there is a time for short notes and this was the time, and now it is time for you to post until the short cows come home.

4:46PST, I'm awake, pondering life and it's little annoyances that are keeping me awake, and I don't see going back to bed as an option because I'll just have to be awake in an hour anyway.

I saw Nine last night and liked it. It never reaches the beauty and magic of the original stage production and I don't like the Kate Hudson number (or her particularly) at all but I thought Marion Cotillard was WONDERFUL!!! OMG is that woman beautiful. I have to see La Vie en Rose now. I'm surprised and pleased that I enjoyed it (Nine, that is).

Marion is the one with the BIG bump in the middle of her forehead.

Snow is starting early today.....but we expect 3-6 inches of the stuff by Thursday evening.  It may be here NOW!

I am off to WalMart to buy bird feed for outdoors and some squirrel corn as well.  Can't have the livestock suffer.

I will watch for that distinction, DR JRand.  Though with today's CGI, they could just as well put a bump into the middle of Audrey Tautou forehead.

Good morning, all! I'm back to my Herbert-Kern life today and around 11 am I will head to the NYPL for another round of biographcal sleuthing. I just got an email that tomorow's McGlinnventory is off, so I will have a morning at Toyland to return some books and papers and dig up a few more.

Yesterday, I picked up quite a nice little bundle of things for myself, including the full orchestra score to Leroy Anderson's "Sleigh Ride." All of the printed matter cannot be sent to the Library of Congress since they already have it in their collection through copyright placement, so all printed scores, books, magazines, etc. will be sold or, in some cases, taken by the heirs. I have to be selective because there's much of the printed composer editions I would like to lay claim to, but I have no room for something like the complete New Mozart Edition! I am thinking that I will take the complete Walton Edition and the never-completed Doblinger Edition of Johann Strauss, Jr. I 'm also eyeing the Russian editions of the full scores for the three Tchaikovsky ballets, but this is a mere drop in the bucket to the enormity of this inventory.

I've been reading every night a new tome, ROBERT ALTMAN, THE ORAL BIOGRAPHY, which i'm enjoying very much. Now I want to see the films I missed in their first release.

Two people who I would never confuse with each other are Valerie Harper and Tallulah Bankhead, which is why I was so taken aback when I first heard about LOOPED, which is about to open on B'way.  DR Jose says he saw it in a workshop and that Harper does nicely in the role (of which I'm glad since I've always liked her.)  But I have to wonder what led to this casting...

DR Elmore, how is the horse whip notated in "Sleigh Ride"?

DR Dan(theMan), the whip is notated as a regular percussion instrument. It's also used in the percussion variation of Benjamin Britten's wonderful "Young Person's Guide To The Orchestra" aka "Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Henry Purcell," which is a wonderful piece of light music I recommend to everyone. My first recording of the piece was Bernstein's recording and the narration was by one of the brothers of my friend Ted Chapin.

I forgot: the whip is also heard in the very first bar of Ravel's great piano concerto in G-major.

Greetings from Atlanta! Thank you for all the travel vibes...it was a great flight, not even half full do I had a whole row to myself. The only bad thing was that when I decided to take advantage of this and slid over to the window, I grabbed the armrest and sliced open my finger. There was a sharp pointed piece of metal poking out. I reported it to the flight attendant so it could be fixed before the next passenger sat there, and she realized that someone had broken off one of those dual prong adaptors for the headphones and the pointy prongs were left in the armrest. Fortunately she had bandaids.

Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, I'm glad to be home with Greg and the kitties, even if it is colder than NY!

Good morning!

I woke up with a congested head, so no walk for me in 17 degree weather. I'm taking to the treadmill today in short bursts: 4 or 5 of them throughout the day. Not ideal, but I don't want to chance anything with this cold getting any worse.

I'd LOVE to finish CHE today and get that review posted, but if CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN 2 arrives, I feel obligated to get it done since it's already in stores for sale.

TV Notes:

UGLY BETTY moves to its new Wednesday at 10 p.m. timeslot tonight! Unless ratings drastically improve, we'll be seeing its last spate of episodes this winter and spring. MODERN FAMILY, THE MIDDLE (two episodes starting at 8 ), and COUGAR TOWN are all new tonight.

Fox and the CW are taking the night off with rerun programming, but the other networks are all featuring new episodes or specials (including the PEOPLE'S CHOICE AWARDS on CBS).

I will say, not really vis a vis DAW but just generally, everyone really needs to think about what they post--would you say what you post to someone out loud if you were sitting next to them at a partay?  The internet, much like driving a car, gives a false sense of "protection" and a certain "anonymity," and I think it leads to a lot of misunderstandings (as well as dead pedestrians).

I am really confused. Did somebody post something that offended DAW?

And I agree with DR Jrand, most of us are using our real names. So we're not anonymous. And I wouldn't type anything here that i wouldn't say to a person's face.

Is Ms. Harper producing/co-producing the production?

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

It's absolutely beautiful outside - blue sky and cloudless as far as the eye can see.

Also hideously cold and uncomfortable. Taking a garbage bag out of the house and into the garage (meaning I had to be out in the cold; I have to cross my outside side porch) to get into the garage) was a very unhappy experience.

The first episode of THE MENTALIST I watched was the hypnotist episode. Three hypnotists (not counting Patrick who's an expert at it) have a great workout with folks and even one member of the team. The climax on a roof is pretty ridiculous and unsatisfying. This episode, along with the one with the psychic who rattles Patrick's cage and never has to anwer to her part in a murder, were my two least favorite episodes of the first season.

I watched it anyway.

Then I watched all of the bonus features on the CHE third disc. There were about two hours' worth of documentaries. The making of the movie and a nice documentary on the RED digital camera which was used in filming were my favorite featurettes on the disc.

Cilla, 7 million dollars raised in in 6 weeks, WOW & CONGRATULATIONS!

Thanks Jane, it was quite an experience and quite a coming together of the community.  The day we saved the park is the last time I saw my Uncle.  He had money but was known for being pretty frugal with it.  Anyway, he came down to the park office, found me, gave me a hug and made a donation. We shared a nutty bar together and spent a little time just enjoying the positive wonderful vibe of the whole event.  It was one of the happiest days I can ever remember.  He died about 2 weeks later.

They had bricks you could have names engraved on for a certain donation. So I gave enough to have one for him and one for me. They are within a few feet of the last place I ever saw him.

Funny you should ask that.  It was the topic of great discussion betwixt and between Betsy and myself today.  For as huge as the house is (I think it's over 5000 sf), the living room is surprisingly small, and I just feel weird about putting it out in the family room next to the kitchen for some reason.  I'm thinking it would probably have to go in one of the many basement rooms.

Finished about seven pages so far - that's probably enough, but if I stick to the pattern I've been following, I may do another couple later this evening.  Again, not sure just how much detail to go into - I don't want it to seem boring, but I'm writing about my first job and I think it's pretty interesting, so I don't want to skimp either - other jobs I won't go nearly into this kind of detail, but so many things were a learning experience on this first show that I feel I need to spend time on it.

We don't have a spare the air day, but I have a friend who fills her fireplace with candles, it's quite lovely.  I really should do that, I never use my fireplace.

DR Edi, maybe you should make a slight stink about this to the airline management.  I think some kind of compensation might be in order...

They asked if I wanted to report it but I felt that it would be fine.

Today I wrestled a cat into a carrier with much more bloodshed...he left a big gash in my cheek and I led all over the carrier, my clothes, the cat. (He's very strong even when he's sick!) I'm thinking about suing him. I'm sure I'll have a scar...it was still bleeding when I got home.

i've seen that, more often when the fireplace no longer works,  this house doesn't look old enough to have a problem with the fireplace, which means it should be nice & clean if they didn't use it ;)

DR edisaurus - Glad to hear that you had a relatively uneventful flight back home.  I know you're going to be very busy over the next couple of days, but be sure to stop every now and then for a break.  -Maybe have a macaron, or a sip of hot chocolate.

I have had a macaron, or two. Seems that my DH doesn't like the ones with gold dust. And of course, we wouldn't want them to get stale....

That's pretty common here, since it's usually not cold enough for fires. However, this week I wish our fireplace was working. It's unusually cold in Atlanta!

I'm taking a break from band parts for a bit of dinner. I must say that though I make tuna salad regularly, this week's batch is particularly delicious. Ouch!

Well, facial cuts always tend to bleed more than other cuts due to all the capillaries in your face.  -Something I learned in high school.  -Which is why even small cuts to the face can look like big ones.  In any case...

Have you started coming up with a better story for when you're asked "How did you get that scar?" yet?

once i was able to use the computer after my return home from the hospital i put a hold on a request for a book at the library.  i figured it worked since i went from number 5 to number 6 in the hold line.  apparently i hadn't suspended my hold as the book came in today.  they had changed the way it is done & i now need to fill in a reactivation date.  maybe by the time the 16 people now in front of me have read the book i shall be able to hold it easily.

If a book won't be out until May, when do you think it will show up in the system so i can go on the waiting list?

You should ask them. At my library you are allowed to put your name for a book as soon as you want to. But we can't do that from home.

At my sister's library she can do it from home. She "suggests" a book online from her account, and then somehow the system keeps track of who asked for it first.

I'll bet you can reserve the May book now. And if you're allowed, i'll bet others have already done it.

DR Ginny, did you watch the Orange Bowl?

DR Cillaliz - I did watch part of it, until halftime.  I was for Iowa, of course, and was glad to see this morning that they maintained their lead and won the game.  The two meetings I attended yesterday were exhausting and I went to bed early last night and slept late this morning.

I knew you would be...Big 10 and all.   it was a really good game

I just played games with my niece.

Dora ice hockey. Princess Yahtzee.  And a game that is sort of like "where is waldo" where you have to find all kinds of items on a huge picture.

I found the last game very interesting. My niece turned 4 in september. She could find the items (cherries, eggs, birds...) on the picture.  But i would be able to find it faster. But where she would beat me is that she would memorize the big pictures (there are hundreds and hundreds of items on the picture).

She knows the 50 little pictures she is supposed to find (cherries, eggs, birds, radish, plates...) and she would look at the big picture and memorize them as soon as we started playing.

It was quite interesting to see her do this.

But in addition, there are like 20 big pictures, and she had played one of them 1-2 weeks ago. and she was remembering where the things were from last time. I figured this out when she would show things to me and add, "oh  mommy and i couldn't find this one last week" and then she would point to it.

Jane, I watched BALLET SHOES (1975) last night. Still a good film, but quite a different screenplay. The girls are a bit younger, Guardy is rather scatter-brained, and a LOT more ballet. I like the 2005 version better, but both are worth seeing, IMO.

Yes, it is a large piece. There's another large one that he likes, but it's in the living room, which DD is not allowed into. This one is in the hall. I'm not sure I'd be quite as blase as DD's owner.

Then I wrote another couple of pages, finishing the section I was in.  So, a little over ten pages today, and have already done seventy pages, which just boggles my mind.  I may end up cutting about a page - it has to do with my parents and I had the timeline of it wrong, but if I move it where it belongs it sort of gets in the way - I'll talk to muse Margaret about it and see what she thinks.  It's sort of extraneous, but it is interesting.  But it doesn't forward the story, in fact it's a detour.  It's very brief, though, and so if Margaret thinks it should stay I'll figure out a way to put it where it belongs.

I just tried the American-Pepperidge Farm version of Tim-Tams... They're pretty good.  However, they've most definitely been "Americanized".  They're a bit sweeter - even the "Dark Chocolate" variety seems a bit sweet to me.  And the cookies - "biscuits" - are crunchier, which is not such a bad thing, but that cake-ier, softer texture is part of makes the original, Australian Tim-Tams so irresistible.

They're also a little smaller - at least in width - which makes the Tim-Tam Slam (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim_tam_slam) a little harder to accomplish.  ::)

On the plus side of a down situation;  We now know of a 24-hour really good (though likely not nearly covered by pet insurance) emergency vet only 13 street blocks away.  I'd always thought that if we had an off-hours emergency, we'd have to get over to the East Side somehow.  But Skip's now seen this place in action in a non-life-or-death situation and was relieved to know this was so close to us.

Time Life was tentatively contracted to the new recording. The money was there from Time Life and outside investors to produce the new recording. The show producers who had produced the Patti LuPone revival of "GYPSY" had asked Time Life to do if,,,,if they had the financing....which they did. All of this had been agreed to on several phone calls. Nonesuch had passed several times due to the lack of financing on their end. The weekend before the show opened the money for Nonesuch to do the recording had been finally raised. Sondheim had always wanted Nonesuch to do the recording since most of his  recordings have been on that label....Good ,bad or indifferent....the producers backed out of the Time Life deal...which was a BETTER deal in the long run....and I think would have fared better for the production as well as for the recording's production values. Time Life did a great job on the Patti LuPone , "GYPSY:" with a GRAMMY nomination to boot.....Politics....in a word....Time LIfe really wanted this recording. They were there at the beginning and was there throughout....

That's very good news!
