Well, you've read the notes, the notes had only a small amount of pith, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently having the pith kicked out of them.

Good morning. Got an early morning meeting on the magazine, and who knows what the rest of the day will bring. I'm hoping to get to Pilates, but I can't tell at this point. Then it's time to start cleaning house  before Easter and maybe get some more work done on taxes. (I'm missing one or two documents and it's going to drive me crazy.)

Good morning, all! I had strange dreams about the Al Carmines show PROMENADE, which is being given in concert in April and I'm thinking about attending, all depending on whether the concert will be with piano or the wonderful Eddie Sauter orchestrations. The dream was mostly about my debating on whether or not to go, weird happenings in the dress rehearsal and then I was working on a production of THE BEGGAR'S OPERA; it was weird.

Today, I have a meeting with my friend, record producer Judy Sherman, about some recording for the McGlinn executor, john Vogel. The three of us are meeting at 10:30 to discuss all the preliminaries: AGVA fees, calendar, schedule, studios, budget, etc. Mr Vogel has never met Judy, whom I've known since 1985 when she produced the McGlinn "Songs of New York" recording for the Book-of-the-Month Club and the NYC Gay Men's Chorus albums between 1985 and 1992.

After that, I have work here on the never-ending Montgomery & Stone Medley and THE WIZARD OF OZ before I pack for my trek tomorrow to the wilds of DC and the Library of Congress. I am going with a bit of trepidation since I have no idea if the people I wish to avoid will be there or not and I'm still feeling bruised over the hostility of LIFE BEGINS AT 8:40. I have things to research and photocopy, so I'm taking the train to DC, come hell or high water.

The Dream-0-Matic 6000 says that DR ELMORE is more interested in working on songs and musicals already established rather than brand new untried material - but that there must be a new approach and lots of discussion before he is interested in beginning his work.

DR JRand59, you are amazing! I would amend that analysis by saying that it all depends on the new material; for instance, I would rather have my ears drilled than work on a show by a couple of writers I won't mention, but there are shows by other writers whose work I would be happy to orchestrate. I would love to do YANK!, for example. I love big band 40's music.

The Bravo Channel is showing the weirdest PROMISES PROMISES ads: we get it once with the band (sounds like a synth on a brass patch) playing the title song. Then after another commercial, we get the same PROMISES PROMISES ad, with the very same copy, and an underscore of "Say A Little Prayer." Very tiresome.

One of my favorite shows is starting again tonight, IN PLAIN SIGHT.  Unfortunately it is on the USA network which is not available in Canada.  So i just have to wait (hopefully soon) for Global tv to post their schedule.

Hopefully i won't have to wait as long as i've had to wait for THE CLOSER.  The station W that shows it still has not shown season 4. Although when i emailed them they said they would be showing it this year.

I was a little bit bummed about the bottom 2. Although these two teams were not the best, they were not the worst.
They had announced pamela anderson right at the beginning of the show as being in the B2. I thought her name would have made her more popular. Then they had shannen dougherty and kate gosselin (one would make it and the other would be in the bottom). They announed it was mark and shannen in the bottom. I really like mark ballas a lot. And thought that this week he was great (the routine was great). And shannen was really so much improved. So i was upset when they were voted out.  However after the vote was revealed, it was revealed that mark had injured himself (his knee) in rehearsals that day and would be out for 6 weeks. So shannen actually sort of seemed happy because she said she didn't want to dance with anyone but him. And she would have had to switch partners. So i was then sort of happy. Because i also would not have wanted to see her with another partner.

BK,

The other day you mentioned that Louis Lepke was a major character in the long musical.  So, is this a musical about Murder, Inc. or is that just a subplot?

On a similar subject:

Several years ago, I had the idea of turning my original script of DILLINGER AND CAPONE into a musical.  I had sold it to Roger Corman, who produced the film.  Unfortunately (after his experience with THE LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS),  were unable to negotiate a realistic deal for me to regain the rights, so I dropped the project.

But, one of the numbers I was planning for the show was "The St. Valentine's Day Massacre Polka".

After I ate a light breakfast, I went out and mowed the front yard this morning, the first time in 2010 (first of many, I'm UNHAPPY to say). Can't stand doing it, but it was over in 15-20 minutes.

However, from now on, I'll either walk in the morning or mow the grass, but I WON'T do both!

Also have new episodes of HUMAN TARGET and MODERN FAMILY to record and watch tonight. CBS is doing reruns again, and NBC does have a new SVU at 10 but everything else appears to be reruns.

The Lepke gangster stuff is not the main plot of the show - the show is about a young fellow whose dream it is to work as an usher at the Roxy movie palace in NY.  He inadvertently saves Lepke's life and the two begin an unlikely friendship.

I am adding Ann's b-day to the notes, not that she comes around here much these here days.  I probably would have seen it was her b-day last night, but, you know, the phone rang at midnight just as I was writing the second section of the notes and the co-author or the long musical kept me on the phone for twenty minutes - after that I wasn't thinking about anything but bed.

And Robert Morse did The Beauty That Drives Men Mad on the Tony show that spotlighted Broadway women....and he was hilarious!

My guess as to it's non-success, that movie is a hard act to follow....and when it hit Broadway in 1972, the movie was only 13 years old....and it had a respectable if not spectacular 505 performance run.
Title: Re: OUT OF PITH

I think SUGAR also marked the beginning of David Merrick's long, slow decline as a producing powerhouse.  There was some major article in some magazine back then about SUGAR, talking about how divided the out-of-towners were on it.  And I think, rightly or wrongly, a lot of people (including Merrill, IIRC) decried Styne's music, though I think a lot of it is quite winning.
Title: Re: OUT OF PITH
Post by: John G. on March 31, 2010, 10:35:54 AM
Despite the run count, the production lost money. But the cast album has some treasures, including the songs already mentioned, "When You Meet a Man in Chicago," "Sun on My Face" (OK, lame lyric, great melody) and the title song. There were other shows from the era that had no stand-alone hits but somehow managed to be remembered and revived. Granted, the show was revived with Tony Curtis and under the name "Some Like It Hot," but I hear that was hardly an artistic or financial successs.

Yep, I've done it and had to do what you did - smooth it over.  I've also been sent e-mails that I wasn't supposed to see - the funniest of those was from the record label that shall not be named, in the midst of our lawsuit they accidentally sent me an e-mail meant for the two-faced back-stabbing prick who was at least partly responsible for that whole debacle - I was able to use that in my deposition in a very funny way.

DR ELMORE of course the interpretations of the Dream-0-Matic 6000 are open for discussion.

Why aren't you in DC working for the government?

I'm all set for my trip tomorrow to DC; all I have to do tonight is pack and make sure the alarm goes off at 5 am.

After today's meeting, I guess I can officially announce that in September I will begin a recording project of all the extant cello & piano music, piano solo music, and songs written for other venues than a show by Victor Herbert; this will include German lieder, Irish patriotic songs, Irish folksong arrangements, songs for plays, vaudeville acts and revues, and special occasion pieces like the Catholic University Alma Mater. Soloists will include Rebecca Luker, George Dvorsky, Ron Raines, Jeanne Lehman, Zachary Stains (DR JRand's fave Hercules), Steven LaBrie, Korliss Uecker, Rosalie Sullivan, Margaret Jane Wray, Dillon McCartney, Marnie Breckinridge, Valerian Ruminski, Jonathan Michie, and Christopher Fitzgerald, accompanied by William Hicks, who will be piano soloist. The cellist will be Jerry Grossman, principal cellist of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, a post once held by Victor Herbert.

Just back from Pilates for the first time in two weeks -- and I can feel it in every muscle. Stopped off at Big Lots and there was a new shipment of DVDs for $2.50 apiece. Got "Clueless" and "Chinatown" plus "Funny Face" and "Too Many Girls," which I don't think I've ever seen.

Good Afternoon!

Since my friends are staying down by Columbia University, I directed us to Community Food & Juice (http://www.communityrestaurant.com/) for lunch. Well, brunch.  I had their amazing(!!!!!!!) Blueberry Pancakes with Maple Butter.  Soooo good, and perfect for this drier but still cool early Spring day here in NYC.

It was a wonderful show - especially Gower Champion's terrific staging.

I have never seen SUGAR on stage. It never seems to have caught on for community theaters and local theaters to do. Of course, a lot of Broadway shows at around that same time - OVER HERE! and SEESAW are two others that spring quickly to mind - don't get done much locally either.

We watched CASTLE last night & agree with Matt H, excellent episode.  Matt, I'm baffled why you thought Martha had anything to do with the killer? ;D

I couldn't remember the name of the younger man she was dividing her time with, and I thought maybe a surprise would spring out that he had been dating her to get close to Castle so he could somehow get to Beckett through him.

And Robert Morse did The Beauty That Drives Men Mad on the Tony show that spotlighted Broadway women....and he was hilarious!

I prefer the version of this song from the London cast recording.  It has a couple of different verses, but more importantly, a longer (and better) ending.  I performed in an AIDS benefit series here in Olympia from 1993-2001 or 2002 and we had that song transcribed.  I sang "Josie's" part.  We brought down the house! :D

Before I started cooking lunch, I watched last night's AMERICAN IDOL performances/judges remarks (I skip everything else). The best performances: Michael (by far), Lee (next by far), Casey, and Crystal. The rest ranged from bland (Aaron, Katie) to inept (Tim, Didi). And the judges gushing over Andrew? What was THAT all about? Yep, it was somewhat better than the prior weeks, but it was hardly a major rebound. Slightly better, more in control, but that's ALL it was.

when I used to review community theater, I must have seen four or five productions of "Over Here!" No "Sugar." No "Seesaw." No "Applause." But I saw "Sound of Music" at least two dozen times. The one true novelty was finding a high school in Camden, Ohio, there near Middletown that staged "All-American."

While I ate lunch, I watched last night's SOUTHLAND. I absolutely cannot stand Tami, and everytime she's there whining and moaning about her boring life, I want to put my foot through the TV screen. The cases were all interesting, but Tami sucks the life out of every scene with her ego, her self-obsession, and her stupidity. She DESERVED what happened to her. I'm just sorry her poor husband Sammy must also bear the brunt of her idiotic decisions.

The only two regularly scheduled network series that won:

GLEE and MODERN FAMILY.

Among other series winners were IN TREATMENT and THE LADIES NO. 1 DETECTIVE AGENCY on HBO.

The Jerome Robbins "American Masters" special won (deservedly so).

My question for bk: have you ever mistakenly sent an email to someone and inadvertently copied someone on it that you hadn't meant to? Someone who was referenced in said email with a somewhat negative tone?

I did that yesterday regarding our film. I didn't say anything horrible and was able to smooth things over quickly, but I still had a panic attack. Greg said he'd never done this, so I wondered how common this was, and if there are any good stories involving said scenario?

I have - many times.

The 5-10 mile speeding buffer may be a thing of the past:
http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2010-03-30-speeding-cushion_N.htm?se=yahoorefer

Quoted from the article:
Quote
Tim Davenport, 42, of Kansas City, Mo., was recently stopped on 15th Street in Blue Springs, Mo., and ticketed for going 40 mph in a 35-mph zone — although the police officer initially ticketed him for 40 in a 25, he says. "I drove down that road again, and the posted limit was 35," he says. "I figured the judge wouldn't accept that, since I was over the speed limit, and would still charge me with it. So I went ahead and paid" the $60 ticket.

Too bad this guy didn't fight the ticket.  Since the officer wrote the wrong posted speed down, the ticket is null and void.

And that's what I watched when I went back downstairs. Hadn't watched it in several months (maybe a year), so I quite enjoyed watching it.

I wonder what the justification for casting Ralph Richardson as the father was. Since Basil Rathbone had won a Tony Award for it on stage, and he was certainly a known presence on screen, why wouldn't they use him. Was this some of the remnants of Holmes type casting hurting him in this instance? Did William Wyler not want him? Olivia? Was he busy doing something else?

When THE HEIRESS was over, I put in an NCIS second season episode. This afternoon, I happened to channel surf by some HD channel that was showing this episode, but it was 3/4 of the way finished, so I found the episode in the second season box set and watched it next. Very enjoyable one, about a marine who fell from a cliff in a park while shooting video, the camera capturing some of the "accident" which turned out to be murder.

Next came tonight's HUMAN TARGET. Another bold rescue attempt for Chance saving a lady doctor. Hard to believe anyone could survive so many close calls in one episode, but it IS escapist entertainment.

And then another very funny MODERN FAMILY episode with hilarious episodes involving Phil, Mitchell, and Cameron.Gloria got out some good one liners tonight, too.

And now, it's time for me to leave work and put up a poster for my niece.  I bought one of those laser-light levels to put up shelves in my TV room, so now it'll get used again. :)

Until later!

Oh it stopped.....it was on television.

We had a fun time entertaining my cousin from Japan and his family.  He has an 18-year-old son from his first marriage and a 6-year-old son and 4-year-old daughter with his lovely current wife.  The little ones were quite comfortable with all of these American relatives and a joy to have around.  Their mom brought a several dishes to add to the feast.  Richard and Rob were great co-hosts and I'm about to crash.

I am packed, I've made my snack and lunch for the 3 and a half hour train ride, and I remembered to take along huge manila envelopes this time to hold the photocopies. I'm will have dinner tomorrow night with my friend Loras Schissel and I am really looking forward to that. I am hoping they're still recording LIFE BEGINS AT 8:40 tomorrow and that my former friend from the LoC who made the whole experience so dreadful is here in Manhattan at the sessions and not at the Library.

DR elmore - Just remember that when you get off the train at Union Station that you'll probably be surrounded by a gaggle of Spring Breakers and Cherry Blossom Viewers and Easter Weekenders.  Don't hit them.  Too hard. ;)

*And plan your return time accordingly.

I wonder why SONDHEIM: THE STORY SO FAR only contains one cut from SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE?

They did that so that the "collectors" would not end up with a lot of duplicate tracks from the OCRs.  Additionally, the OCRs for Sunday in the Park with George, Into the Woods, Merrily We Roll Along, and Sweeney Todd had just been reissued.

Re:  flooding basement.  About the only real worry with this new house is there's a persistent leak into the mudroom.  All of the tech people we've had in (and that's quite a few) agree there isn't anything structural to worry about, but they all have different theories as to what's causing it and how to remedy it.  None of them cheap.  :)

Back from another hugely busy rehearsal - so many scenes, so many actors - but these first two are nothing compared to tomorrow - you'll read about it in the notes.
