Title: STARTING HERE, STARTING NOW

Well, you've read the notes, the notes started here, then started now, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - starting here, starting now they're supposedly on their way.

TOD: Mom used to make doughnuts and, for me, there will never be any better. They were practically perfect when just removed from the fryer and coated hot with chocolate or white glaze. I once had her make a batch for me to take to class on my birthday, back in the days when kids did that.

Matthew S: Regarding your message from last night:
"Even though I haven't gotten around to watching Mad Men, I see that Robert Morse is on the series. I thought it would have been really cool if they called him J. Pierpont Finch and his wife's name would be Rosemary."

There are several parallels between Morse's character and J. Pierpont Finch. I think the New York Times did an article about that shortly after the show premiered.

TOD:

I don't really eat donuts any more, but when I did, I liked chocolate ones with sprinkles.

Before than, when I was a kid, I liked the glazed ones.

These days, I much prefer a cheese Danish, but I avoid those, too...unless they're put right in front of me.

Good morning, all! I woke at around 6:45, turned off the alarm and slept till 8am. I am feeling quite decent this morning.

Yesterday I went to a fabulous housewarming party for my friend, show collector extraordinaire Richard Norton, one of the producers of the musical EATING RAUL and Brad Fraser's UNIDENTIFIED HUMAN REMAINS AND THE TRUE NATURE OF LOVE, and his partner Gary on West 137th St. The townhouse they purchased is absolutely glorious: basement, rentable apartment a floor above that, first floor with a beautiful terrace in the back, and two more floors above. My studio suddenly seemed enormously tiny and I coveted all the space. There were many friends and wonderful folk I'd never met before, and I got to gossip a bit with Peter Filichia about numerous topics.

After that, I returned here, finished pricing the full scores in the McGlinnventory and today I will begin pricing the miniature scores. This afternoon at 3 pm I have an audition with Mr Anthony Morelli, and then I'm back to pricing scores.

My mother, when she was saner, made great donuts, which she fried in a huge cast iron skillet and then tossed with confectioner's sugar in a huge paper bag. She didn't make them often but they were mighty tasty. My memory is that while I was in the grades of 1-5 she made a lot of wonderful treats - cookies, pies, cakes, donuts and popcorn balls every Halloween - but after her final prgnancy and Randy's birth, she went slowly and steadily off the deep end.

My cousin Sue thinks she suffered from postnatal depression for the last sixty years of her life, but I think she was crazy with several lucid moments often too far apart from whatever was going on inside her mind. The two characters in fiction that most remind me of her are the title character of Shel Silverstein's "The Ballad of Lucy Jordan" and Sally Durant Plummer in FOLLIES; perhaps that's why it's my favorite Sondheim show.

And on that depressing note, a more cheerful thought:

!!!!!!!!!!!! A Very Happy Birthday Today To Our E&T DR Hisaka !!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had a little cell phone adventure during the past few days.  I ordered on-line and quickly received the Droid X, which is supposed to out-iPhone the iPhone.  But after using it for a few days, I found that it didn't even live up to my iTouch.  First, I discovered that a lot of my favorite apps were not available in the Android Store.  Then I could not get my bluetooth headset to pair up with the phone.  The camera was quirky to use and took just so-so pictures.  The e-mail alerts lagged up to fifteen minutes (if they sounded at all.)  But the worst thing was that the battery would quickly drain even when the phone was not in use.  "Feh!", said I, and I returned the contraption to a Verizon store yesterday.

TOD:  When I was in college at the University of Kentucky, there was an all-night doughnut shop less than a mile from campus called Tastee-O's.  We'd walk there late at night to get fresh doughnuts.  There was also a great doughnut shop, alas no more, in a mini-mall on Franklin right before the Hollywood freeway entrance at Argyle that served best apple fritters.

TOD: The best donut I ever had was one freshly made at a donut cart at the London Zoo. The only thing close to it I've had since is a hot Krispy Kreme. Those are my favorites, but only if they're hot. And I haven't had one in many months.

When DR Jose is here, he has requested a trip to Sublime Donuts, so I imagine I'll have one while I'm there:

Those who've read the Kritzer books know what my first donuts were and know that the taste and smell of them are etched in my memory forever - Helm's from the Helms truck, delivered fresh every day to one's neighborhood.  You'd hear the whistle, run outside, and there they would be in drawers, waiting for you to purchase.  The best chocolate and glazed donuts ever.

As for the Topic of the Day...

My first doughnut was most likely a Dunkin' Donut or a Krispy Kreme that was served in the parish hall after Sunday Mass; either a glazed or a powdered sugar one.

My current favorite doughnuts come from Doughnut Plant (http://doughnutplant.com/) - which some DRs may remember from the HHW Eating and Walking and Eating and Walking Tour.  One of their current selections is a Blueberry Cake Doughnut with a Blueberry Glaze.  YUM!!!

As a former B&N employee I can testify that the morons who own the company are out to lunch: for several years they've had posters hangign in their stores saying "order online for same day delivery" and they wonder why business inside the stores is falling off because they're pushing customers to order from home. That store's closing will leave a huge hole at Lincoln Center and it was the perfect location for a store pushing CDs, DVDs, and a large performance section. Very sad.

Well, if the Virgin Megastore had to close due to an increase in rent - and they were apparently the highest-grossing retail store in Times Square - I guess anything is possible.  I just hope that the Lincoln Triangle B&N doesn't become another Forever 21.

I don't know that it's inherently moronic to offer customers the opportunity to order online (making it easier for people to give you money is rarely a bad idea), but I'll be very sad to see this one go. It was a fun place to browse.

I agree. What's moronic is their finding problems with their store's management for the in-store sales falling off. I wonder if they're closing the Lincoln Center store for falling sales.

I always interpreted those "Order Online for Same Day Delivery" as a way for customers to get a book that day that may not be on the shelf that day in-store.  In essence, it allows the store to "carry" more inventory - to have "everything" - without eating up valuable shelf-space.

It's interesting, too, that they're blaming increase in rent. Usually the rent in an area goes up after a Barnes & Noble store opens.  When the one at 82 and Broadway opened, a lot of small stores between 86th and 79th closed because of increased rents. What can be causing a big increase at Lincoln Center?

From what I understand - since I know one of the managers of another store in that "Triangle" - the rent on that space is almost doubling.  Further south and east, the Disney Store decided to shut down their Fifth Avenue location more than a year before their new Times Square "Interactive" location opens.  They were driven out by an astronomical rent increase too.

Disney can't afford the rents there?! Who on earth is going to go into that location?

Top Chef DC starts here today on the food network (i think it is almost done in the US). I love this show. I hate that we are so far behind. But hopefully I can remain spoiler free. I managed to remain spoiler free for both The Next Food Network Star and The Next Great Artist (which both ended here last week).

I was happy that Top Chef won the emmy. I also like The Amazing Race. But Top Chef is definitely one of my favorites.

I believe the recent improvements to Lincoln Center's campus may be contributing to the recent rent increases around the Lincoln Center area. However, I believe all the new buildings and renovations around 72nd Street are also driving up the rents - including the one with the new Bank of America branch and the UWS Trader Joe's.  And don't forget the new-ish Apple Store at 67th.

And, of course, apparently, no one has expressed an interest in taking over that space since the Disney Store shuttered at the end of last year.

Alas, another one will be biting the dust next January...

Barnes & Noble Near Lincoln Center Will Close in January 2011 (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/142474-Barnes-Noble-Near-Lincoln-Center-Will-Close-in-January-2011)

Very sad.

I think that the reality is that, with the possible exception of used bookstores, your standard brick & mortar bookstore is going to totally disappear in the next few years.

If you're like me, you go into a Borders or B&N, check out a book that interests you, then you go home and order from Amazon or somepalce else for a fraction of the cost.

It's a sad situation, but it is what it is.

Since I'm not a NYC resident and I have only been to Lincoln Center once, isn't that the location of Jullliard?  Seems to me that something like Barnes and Nobel would be essential for purchasing of DVD's and CD's in that area ever since they closed all the Tower Records.  It's really sad that something like that has to go away because of rent.

With the recent relocation and renovation of the Juilliard Bookstore - not to mention the overhaul of the Metropolitan Opera Gift Shop and CD/DVD store, well...

I'm just wondering if downsizing that 4-story B&N location is an option.

I don't understand how the landlords of the property in today's economic climate are making the rent so high that a store like Barnes and Noble has to close instead renewing their lease. I have been to that Banes and Noble and my question is: "Do the landlords really think that they can find new tenants willing to pay the rent that B & N find it difficult to pay?"

Do NYC landlords think they are immune from the downturn in the economy?

I have it and I like it...not as much as the original, though.  But I like that there are some song differences.  The weirdest thing, however, is their American accents, especially on the word "Nirvana."  It's supposed to be "nirr-vah-nuh" but for some reason they all sing "nuh-VAR-nuh."

Interestingly enough, there have been some "complaints" on various food blogs that the Beard Papa locations in California seem to "taste different" from the ones elsewhere. -Including the one remaining store here in NYC which is a "company store" as opposed to a licensed franchise. -Which could have something to do with it.  However, I do have to say my favorite Beard Papa treat is their "Mango Ice Shower", shaved ice topped with chunks of mango. Man is that tasty and refreshing.

Also, in there defense(?), even though they make "To Go" packs, they really are best enjoyed right after they've been filled to order in the store.

I think the only thing interesting about Barnes and Noble are there discount remaindered books.  Other than that it is another undisintinguished chain that carries only the best sellers and most popular and has limited variety.  No different than a Borders or anywhere else.  I've peculiar taste and the books I want to buy (those that aren't used), I can get through Amazon cheaper and easier.   I miss the excitement of the hunt and browsing a bookstore, but the truth is, except for a few independents, they all carry the same stuff and it's all fairly mainstream.

The truly sad thing is the loss of the used bookstore, but I'm sure for most of those dealers, it's easier to go online without the overhead of maintaining a shop.  With the demise of interesting book and record stores, shopping has sure gotten boring.

Rehearsal is done.  Very rough in spots, but everyone is getting comfortable with their stuff now.  Great to hear the wonderful Pam Myers belting out her songs.  Damon is terrific, as is Jason, and Lesli and Alet are fantastic.  They're all rough on lyrics, but for those who need it we will have a music stand on which they can put their lyrics.  Reservations are very healthy with thirty-two dinners, which the club owner is thrilled about - and I have the feeling that a lot of people will just be showing up for the show itself - the hope is to have at least fifty, and we're almost at forty now.  The good news is that forty in that room looks great.

Speaking of books, and in relation to a TOD from the other week, I have  become hooked on a new (to me) series of mystery books about a little old spinster lady in Los Angeles who get's herself involved in solving murders.

The series is the Rachel Murdock mysteries by D. B. Olsen (aka Delores Hitchens) and each book has the word "Cat" in the title.

Right now I am reading DEATH WALKS ON CAT FEET.

I had read a previous mystery by this author and decided to try some of her other books (she wrote mainly during the 40s and 50s), and I am very glad that I did.

From MBarnum:
Quote
My only gripe with tonights Emmys was that the IN MEMORIAM did not show Connie Hines, star of MISTER ED.

I mean, that is an iconic show! And Connie Hines did more television then Patricia Neal did.

Without having watched the Emmy's I can still agree she should have been included.

And a very happy haineshisway.com birthday to former dear reader Hisaka, who, I believe, is back in Japan for the time being.

I was thinking about her the other day & meant to ask if she was still here.

For Hisaka,

She was at the door waiting for me to come home.

Yup!

DR Jane did you ever watch any episodes of the GLADES? I am still watching it and still really like it a lot.

I never started because we missed the first few and then I forgot to watch for reruns.  If you see the series is beginning again please let me know.  Otherwise I'll have to try & remember to watch for the DVD.

Btw, i've read the first 3 books (of 6) of the LISA GARDNER FBI PROFILER series. And so far i really like this series too. Although the 2nd and 3rd books were much better than the 1st (the first was still pretty good - you get to know the FBI Profiler).

I think it will be the next book I read.

According to the DP, the apple fritter is made from scraps of old donuts and mixed together with an apple filling thing and then deep fried.  Can't think of anything better.

Or worse for you ;)  It is good we don't make it to Stan's very often.

Did you ever go to the original Borders in Ann Arbor?

Matthew S: Regarding your message from last night:
"Even though I haven't gotten around to watching Mad Men, I see that Robert Morse is on the series. I thought it would have been really cool if they called him J. Pierpont Finch and his wife's name would be Rosemary."

There are several parallels between Morse's character and J. Pierpont Finch. I think the New York Times did an article about that shortly after the show premiered.

Actually it was Michael S who posted that last night :-)

I think we've had this TOD before, because I remember talking about the incredible Dunford Donuts which used to be a feature at all the Dan's Grocery Stores in SLC growing up.  Simply the most incredible, delectable chocolate donuts you've ever tasted.  When Dan's was sold to Smith's, they kept the bakery, though it lost the Dunford name.  In fact, Betsy had tried what we still referred to as a "Dunford" chocolate donut when we were in SLC shortly after our marriage, and it became her major craving when she was pregnant the first time.  My mother used to freeze 2 dozen of them and FedEx them overnight to us!  :)

I went to Jerry's Deli and had what I believe to be the smallest sandwich ever - I had an egg salad sandwich (with bacon) on egg bread.  Barely two bites per half.  So, I decided to do the donut thing and got an apple fritter and a cinnamon roll - both were very good and hit the spot and now I am bouncing off the walls and will go for another jog.
