Well, you've read the notes, the notes were in a daze, and now it is time for you to post until the dazed cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: EDUCE!
-
Morning all.
That is all.
-
Oatmeal with a banana and dried cherries and walnuts and a cup of coffee.
-
The snow is gone in Manhattan. It rained yesterday and melted the little that was left.
-
It's now 46 degrees and it's supposed to reach 51 at some point today.
-
good morning to all

Good morning, all.

TOD: I would like to learn how to tap dance.

Elmore, love the notes over the last few days on Merrily. I remember the excitement of hearing that album for the first time and wondering how that show could have failed.
Then, when I was living in Sarasota, Ann Morrison staged a production featuring the original script. Apparently it took some wrangling for her to get the rights to do that. What I saw was a horror almost every time the music stopped. And the audience actively hated it, no matter how good the music sounded and how great the singers were. One woman sitting a few rows in front of me was loud about how much she couldn't stand "Old Friends."
When you're introduced to what a loser Franklin has become, before you have any reason to feel compassion for him, you never feel any differently about him the entire evening, no matter how gorgeous "Our Time" is. Even in the original, when they give the forced moment of reconciliation with Charley as the story returns to the opening scene.
-
Saw Marc Kudisch at the Crest Theater in Delray Beach, FL last night. It is part of their cabaret series. These are two act version. It was an interesting collection of Broadway, Folk, Rockabilly and other styles. The show was called What Makes Me Tick.
There is no doubt thay Mr. Kudisch has a great singing voice with a wide range, he has a great stage presence, but the show is a little disjointed, the patter doesn't seem to be scripted and he used the word "shit" s couple of times. (A little shocking since most of the audience seems to be in the 60 year and older age range.) I guess I am not used to hearing performers usung curse words in their act.
His patter had a lot of misinformation in it. For example he said that Kander/Ebb's first show before "Cabaret" was Zorba. It was actually the second show after Cabaret and that Zorba influenced Stephen Sondheim. He also attributed Comden and Green as writers of Oklahoma! which we all know isn't correct. Also the time frame seemed to be off. He was born in 1966 (I looked it up) and yet talks about listening to 45's and 78's (Unlikely as there were LPs and tapes) around the age of 8 which brings it into the early 70's. It also seemed as if he was alive in the 50's. He needed to hava more linear approach to his show. He seemed to be all over the place. These mistakes and other is the reason why I don't believe it was scripted and was more off the cuff otherwise these mistakes would have been caught.
Despite being a veteran on the stage in scripted roles he seemed to be uncomfortable in this format. He stood center stage and played to the audience there. He ignored the people in the audience to the left and the right. As oustanding a singer he is the show itself did not click.
Marc Kudisch worked with Bruce on the cast recording of Bells Are Ringing. I kept thinking what would Bruce Kimmel have done with the show to make bring out the best it has to offer.
PS Does everyone get standing ovations these days?
-
Yes.
-
We had 14 new people in Zumba last night! That was very nice.
-
This is another TOD that I shall have to ponder. I never did have an answer to yesterday's.
-
Oh....I guess today's TOD would be:
Write a play that was produced outside my local area.....and to go along with that....finish the play I am currently working on.
-
Misurable weather today. Very cold and extremely wet. And I have to go out in it.
-
My ISP has finally despatched the new broadband wireless router which I ordered. It's only taken them 2 weeks to mail it. Fortunately my old router has been working OK for the past week.
-
The sun is just starting to come up, so I should take Sugar for her walk. Or she should take me.
-
Good morning, all! I finally passed out around 2:00am, and I have no idea why I was having trouble sleeping last night. I hate losing an hour and a half of my morning.
Today I will work on the Herbert songs release as well as a bit on DEAREST ENEMY. Now that Ron Raines is free from FOLLIES, I may visit with him today.
DR JohnG, I still think too much of the MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG score is hostile dissonance, but the original production was dreadful. There was a lot of work to polish it by the closing performance, but you were still stuck with paying full price to see what was essentially a college production. Those twenty year-old performers had no comprehension of being a 40+ alcoholic, creep, letch, whatever, and only Lonny Price, who's a much better actor than director, and Jason Alexander came off well. I would swear in both performances there was no "reconciliation" between Charlei and Frank.

Oscar Nominations:

I was going to link the Academy Award official site - but there are too many commercials and some terrible MUSIC that plays all the time you are on the page.

We were hoping for that yesterday.

Well, Accuweather shows that we had a trace of rain. I'm surprised it was that much.

TOD: I would like to play the bagpipes.

Whoops, came directly to the posts without reading the notes first. Back soon.

This is another TOD that I shall have to ponder. I never did have an answer to yesterday's.
Agree. Must ponder this one as well.
Fascinating TOD.

No Oscar nomination for Albert Brooks.
That's a bit of a surprise.

Looks like Best Supporting Actor is going to be the biggest contest (IMHO, anyway). I know current sentiment is probably for Christopher Plummer, but I have a hunch Nick Nolte is going to win.

It is.

TOD: I've always thought I like to take one of those riverboat cruises up or down the Mississippi in autumn. Lazing on a boat and watching the world go by as the leaves turn, preferably with good friends, a few good books, quality food, and libations, sounds ideal.

Looks like Best Supporting Actor is going to be the biggest contest (IMHO, anyway). I know current sentiment is probably for Christopher Plummer, but I have a hunch Nick Nolte is going to win.
And my sentimental choice would be Max von Sydow for giving a silent performance (in a year of praising silents) and for career achievement. True, he didn't sing over the Alps with small children ... But maybe that's in his favor.

TOD:

He also didn't marry Holly, Hannah's sister, when she wanted him to, and lost her to some professor. Thank goodness Elliott stayed with Hannah!

DR Pogue, I am assuming your lack of response to my PM means "No". :)

Tuesday morning greetings! Richard and I went out last night and bought anniversary presents for each other - he bought me a washer and I bought him a dryer ;) Isn't that romantic?
-
But of course we all know what assuming does. :)
-
Today is the second of my 3 beginner knitting classes.
-
Michael S, thanks for the notes on Mark Kudish. I've always liked his voice, but stories on him seem to leave a few too many questions. Too much ego? Too little him outside his roles? I guess I'd rather see him in a role like "The Glorious Ones" instead of an evening of him performing.
-

Clean clothes can certainly assist romance.

It's really interesting to see those left off the Oscar noms after having waded through the slew of "For Your Consideration" ads littering Variety for the past few months (yes, months).
-
I just yesterday posted a review for one of the Best Doc noms, HELL AND BACK AGAIN. Interesting companion piece to RESTREPO.
-
In other news, I have become quite fond of the little trance tune "To Ulrike M" by the wonderfully named Swedish band The Doris Days.
-
I just yesterday posted a review for one of the Best Doc noms, HELL AND BACK AGAIN. Interesting companion piece to RESTREPO.
I find the best doc category ridiculous. Again, Werner Herzog made two of the best documentaries of the year and both were left off the list of those considered.

LOL!
Richard has been going to the laundromat about once a week since our washer conked out on Dec. 12. We decided to wait until the January sales to deal with it. And, to be honest, we've often made a household purchase for our anniversary since it comes on the heels of both birthdays and Christmas.
-
I wonder if we'll get the little homages delivered to each of the Best Actor and Actress nominees this year. I can hear it now:
"Jean Dujardin, just who the f*** are you, anyway?" ;)
-
DR Ginny, we once bought a block fence along the alley for our Christmas present. It's still there, too.
-
DR Laura - sounds good!
-
Good Morning!
I'm up, I'm up.... And... I guess I needed a bit more sleep last night.
-
DR Michael S - Thanks for the Marc Kudisch report. I was born in 1968, and had a lot of 45s, so... However, I'm guessing he was listening to his parents' 78s.
On a related note, I just read the review for Michael Cerveris' "American Songbook" evening at Lincoln Center. He apparently sang Barber's "Knoxville: Summer of 1915". Hmmm...

DR Michael S - Thanks for the Marc Kudisch report. I was born in 1968, and had a lot of 45s, so... However, I'm guessing he was listening to his parents 78s.
78s were quite possible/probable in the late 60s-early 70s. "Hi-Fi" units, both mono and stereo, were routinely outfitted with three speeds...45, 33 1/3 and 78 rpm. The trouble with playing 78s is that the grooves were generally larger than diamond-tipped styli could handle (and with the end of monaural recordings in the late 60s, most LPs being manufactured required the diamond-tipped stylus). Fortunately, hi-fis were also fitted with switchable stylus levers and you could buy a stylus with diamond tip on one side and "whatever" (steel, nickel?) on the other for 78s. I also had 78s in my collection of music...stuff I couldnt' find on 33 1/3, for instance. I was a teenager when Kudisch and Simbulan were born, so I know it was "likely". You could get some great deals on 78s (which were no longer being manufactured) in drug stores, five-and-ten stores, book shops, etc.

And...
Good Afternoon!

DR Ron Pulliam - If you were to obtain a passport, which of your former duty stations would you like to re-visit?

And...
I really should get a (late) jump-start on my day.
Laters...
-
DR Ron Pulliam - If you were to obtain a passport, which of your former duty stations would you like to re-visit?
Naples, first and foremost. But also on the agenda would be many points in Italy...Rome, Rimini, Florence, Vicenza, Venice...and then on to Istanbul...and Athens. A flight from Athens to Heathrow would probably be the end of my first leg with a three- or four-day stopover in London.

Hmmm..., indeed.
I was born in 1962 and remember buying 45s into the early 1980s. I never bought many tapes, either cassettes or 8-tracks.
As for the 78s, I seem to recall a lot of those from Walt Disney or from other children's music producers.

When Jose was born, 45s were THE top-selling records. Teens bought hit songs by the millions on 45. 45s, in the 1960s, were the iTunes downloads of today.

Day 1 in Tahiti before boarding the ship.
-
The flight arrived early in the morning. The cruise line met us at the airport and took us to the hotel & gave us a room for a few hours. We showered & had the buffet breakfast which was included.
I loved this tree.
-
On our last night after the cruise we stayed in one of these back bungalows. With views of beautiful Moorea Keith sat on the deck off our room smoking a cigar and watched me swim. Truly an experience to cherish.,
-
The last photo we took before it began to rain. We also had to check out of our room & wait until we could be transported to the ship. We did a lot of waiting at the hotel.
-
It is too late to go to the gym now as Keith as an eye doctor appointment this afternoon. He has gone back down the road to do some shoveling.

He sounds like an idiot, frankly. Everyone needs a director - EVERYONE. And they need a director who understands patter, pacing, and staging. Comden and Green's Oklahoma! To the tune of Just in Time:
Corn so high

Interesting about Dragon Tattoo not up for film and director.

I'm up and have had one singer come over already. I don't think the next one's coming until one so I may sneak out for some eggs or something.

More beautiful photos DR JANE!! Thanks for sharing!

Some lucky people - especially in the north - may be able to see some beautiful Northern Lights again this evening.....if you want to stay up that late.....and you have clear skies.

Grabbed some eggs and a bagel, picked up two packages and I'm home. Just two more singers have to pick up their packages.

Jane, it's drizzly and foggy here, which is actually pretty if you're looking at it through the windows. And on our campus there are plenty of deer out there munching away.
But I must say your photos make me want to be under a palm tree with an icy drink and a good book.

I've had a delightful afternoon at my second knitting class followed by some shopping. The scarf I started last week is almost finished and Cathy (one of the teachers) and I decided how that will proceed and she set me up for my next project. It's another scarf that's a sampler of different fancy stitches.

It is rather good for a book trailer. Usually they are so fast & wordy I miss most of it.

That's great. Congrats!
Yes it is!!!!

The last photo we took before it began to rain. We also had to check out of our room & wait until we could be transported to the ship. We did a lot of waiting at the hotel.
Thanks for the photos, Jane.
My pleasure.

Thanks DR KevinH.

I may have already posted this web link, but I am on drugs, so I am not responsible for my actions.
This friend of mine sent me this link about how to know which foods are still safe to eat and which others should be tossed. It is very interesting.

If you did I either missed it or don't remember it.

Very interesting blog, elmore. I doubt I will remember one tenth of what I read.
I heard you were a stage door regular at the original production, waiting for William Norris!
Didn't I see you wear that same hat to the Fringe Festival?

I have saved it as a favorite.

Oh, and thanks for the link DR TCB.

Well, a black cloud that has been hanging over my head for the past week has now been lifted. Last week I received a letter from the financial institution that handles my retirement funds. They just wanted to let me know that they had received the request and they would issue the payment on.................... March 2, 2012.
I literally had a meltdown over this letter. I had been led to believe that I would have my money no later than the end of January. This date was over a month later. So after a week of phone calls, faxes, and near hysteria I have now been approved for my hardship request, and I should have the first portion of my money by the middle of next week.
Could anything else go wrong?
-
Vibes for TCB!
But great that all worked out.
-
Thank goodness DR TCB!!!! I'm sorry you had to go through so much to get approved for this.
-
Glad to hear you've been approved for an earlier payment, TCB.

We've now beat yesterday's total number of posts!

I used to consider myself a movie fan, but realized I haven't seen any of the nominated Best Picture nominees.
-
Does anyone watch MIKE & MOLLY? After watching a couple of episodes this season we ordered Season 1 from NetFlix. We are enjoying the show very much. At first we didn't even realize Molly was the same actress from Bridesmaid, and I'm glad we didn't realize it. Molly is such a likable person.

I know the feeling. We saw HUGO while we were in Palm Springs. I wanted to see THE ARTIST when we returned home but it was gone from the theaters.

William Norris left it to me in his will.

The only nominated actor I've seen is Melissa McCarthy.

However, I would be willing to wager that DR George has a Swedish Cast Recording of THE SOUND OF MUSIC, with or with out Mr. von Sydow.
Because Max von Sydow IS Maria von Trapp.

TOD:
(Doable things):
I've never been across the Golden Gate Bridge.
Seriously?
I haven't either. In fact, I've never been to San Francisco.

Congrats Elmore!!!

Good news TCB!!!

TOD - This past October I achieved one of my biggies when we traveled to Europe, especially Paris. I've been thinking all day about BK's question and have come up with - living in a big city again.
-
Freezing rain tonight...oh joy. Luckily I don't have to travel to Omaha until noon. The roads should be clear by then
-
Buying the alto flute was something I'd always wanted to do. I can't think of anything else right now. I'm pretty content these days
-
DR TCB - 3 years ago when I retired it took longer for my first payment than I'd have liked. I'm glad your situation has been resolved.
-
I'd go with dinner, Jose.
Well...
I ended up watching the #POTUS deliver the #SOTU - as it was hashtagged on the Twitter - and then I headed out for a late dinner of some Japanese fried chicken with curry. It was #NOM.
::)
-
And now I'm finishing up a slice of "Boston Cream Pie" from a Chinese bakery... Which, as it turns, out is more of just a Whipped Cream Pie. However, the cake part of it is really good, and the whipped cream is fresh too. So, no real complaints. ;)

Umm... Well... It was the last slice. So...
Sorry. ::)

Well, I have to go for a blood test tomorrow and then spend some time with my Mother. I'm looking forward to the latter, but not to the former.
'night!

As for the Topic of the Day...
Well...
It looks like I will finally, for realz be making my conducting debut in DC during the run of The Music Man. So...
Like DR Ginny, I would like to go to Paris. And since I have two and a half weeks totally free before I start the main part of the rehearsals for The Music Man, well... I've been doin' some investigatin'.
-
Well I've managed to churn out two reviews, a hideous torture porn piece and the new 25th Anniversary POTO (yes, those are two different titles ;)), as well as a rather nice (if I do say so myself) arrangement of What Wondrous Love is This for choir and cello.
-
And since I actually have to be out of bed before 11:00am tomorrow... ::)
Goodnight.
-
I'm glad you are enjoying your flutes, Cillaliz.
-
Thanks Laura.

Cool. I like that hymn. Cello would give it a haunted feel.

Night, all.
-
What a long and fun and also fun and long day.
-
The rehearsal today was one of those parts of the process of creating an act where things finally clicked into place and I saw what the show is and what it's about.
-
Muse Margaret called in the evening - she finished the book and really liked it, but had some real problems with the fifty or sixty pages that have to do with the label. I'd already tried to remove as much of what I thought she wouldn't like, but there were still sections that really bothered her. I was afraid it was going to be a huge amount of fixing, but when we finally talked through everything, and I'm here to tell you we went page by page through that section, it really turned out to be doing major adjustments to four pages in a row, and the rest was really minor stuff - removing a line here, rephrasing something there - on about six other pages. And it's so much better now. I just couldn't see it, but she's just a reader, but a reader who knows me and knows the story that I'm trying to tell. Those changes are all for the better and make things cleaner and clearer and also don't get me into that place of editorializing rather than just stating. That's a lot of what wasn't working for her and it was not hard to adjust it.
Other than that, it was two minor little things on earlier stuff, and, interestingly, the final line of the final chapter before the Outroduction begins. I wasn't sold on the line, although I thought it was fun. But she was adamant that it didn't sound like me. So, in the end I just removed the line and the chapter now ends with the final line of the previous paragraph, which, when I saw it that way, made much more sense to me. And she loved the outroduction and its last line. So, her part of this is now done.

When I was a kid and we lived in Germany when my dad was in the army, my parents had a record player with four speeds...78, 45, 33 1/3 and 16 rpm. I vaguely remember my dad having some records that actually used the 16 speed, but I don't remember what they were.
